    Awesome addition to the big brother! I'll keep an eye out for another one with a complete jaw. I really like the idea of putting the nut on an Allen wrench and the use of a Dremel for the threads! Brilliant. I need to shine up Dad's old pipe wrenches now. I cleaned them once but they could use a good restoration. When I dig up my plumbers lead furnace I'll let you know. I'm kind of afraid to try to light it.....

    The adjustable pipe wrench turned out beautifully. It is presentation quality now and shows that a 100 year old design is just as valid today. Have a great weekend!.

    Thanks again ! I am always looking forward to the next one !! An easy - and possibly superior way - to do the lettering ( instead of Sharpie ) may be to use a cosmetic foam sponge dipped in paint and carefully stippled on any raised portion of the casting - lettering in this case.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад

      Hello Frank! I tried stippling a few times unsuccessfully, it seems to bleed over on the sides of some poorly casted letters... Also I have recently developed some shakiness that comes and goes but that coupled with my failing eyesight makes these letters a real challenge!!! Lol. Thanks!!!!! 😃👍

      Sure does! BTW, I got my new Drixet buffing wheels today. Very firm like you suggested and from a NY company. Also missed a very nice Parker vise with the wrench today by minutes and a good price. I'm bummed but they'll be more and my old Craftsman vise got its first coat of red paint yesterday. I'm super psyched!

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +1

      Steve! Are you going to do the lettering in White? Silver? It really makes the vise look amazing! Don't worry about the parker, they are all over they outlive all their owners!!!!! LOL Thanks

    • @stevef8993
      @stevef8993 6 лет назад

      Hey ScoutCrafter. This model doesn't have raised lettering but rather a nameplate. I've never taken one of these off before and was worried I'd ruin it. One pressed rivet did have a through hole but not the other so I left it alone. I used your great method with the soda can cut out protecting it during the wire wheel and did my best to tape it up while spraying. Only time will tell when the tape comes off. Lol! I think I went overboard with the shellac, I even coated the inside cavity of the body, just not the contact areas. Lol. Thanks to you, I'm learning a lot, loving tools again and having fun!!!👍 Keep it up!

    You are the tool whisperer. I think you could make a tool from the caveman era look new again. This week at work there was some down time at my job so I found myself grabbing every rusty tool in the shop so I could wire wheel them and shellac them. Now I know why you like doing what you do. Its a great feeling to breath some life into something that hasn't worked right in a long time.

    That's an interesting wrench especially the 14" Little Giant. Clearly you get multiple positions with those teeth down the top and bottom front and rear ramps. That little giant name gets used a lot - the multi purpose ladder and I have a set of Little Giant sheet metal tools, an 18" brake and a knotting and punching tool.

    Another great restoration! FYI, I learned on another forum that a user was using an Acrylic paint marker to highlight the lettering on his tool restorations with spectacular results! Do a search on Amazon for "MOLOTOW One4All Acrylic Paint Markers 2mm", and you can get all different colors as well. Kinda like a sharpie, but with Acrylic Paint - and the lettering really POPS!

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +1

      Hello NN- I used paint markers on some other projects but these letters were really small and needed the most gentle of touches! =) The Sharpie Chisel point was just the ticket! Thanks!!!!!!

    I have an eye out for one of these. Came out nice! I appreciate the tips for the sander.
    Picked up a 36" Armstrong last night, made by Ridgid. Got it from a homeowner; very little use. I have a few 24"s. No comparison. Seriously. Just the spring jaw from the 36" dwarfs a 8" Ridgid. Next to my 58" Mayhew prybar, this is the single biggest hand tool I've held. It's an imposing presence. Still looking for a 48".

    Sanding question...I’m doing the same restoration on my little giant wrench. I see you using sanding belt on the wrench handle. But did you also sand the jaws on the belt ? Or did you do some by hand or with a dremel tool? Luv ur vids. Wife tends to hog the TV but I’m not complaining because I’m watching tool videos on my phone for hours. Great job S.C. Big fan here.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад

      Hello Matthew! Lots of older tools came with a polished finish from the factory, they wouldn't have painted the movable jaw OT the letters, but the handle would have been orange... Sometimes they would just dip the handle into an orange paint tank and let it dry... They were racing against time because the quicker they could pump out a tool the more profit they made... They could have made every tool look awesome but the price would have been double! Thanks!!!

    Another great restoration Scoutmaster, just wondering if you could do a complete restoration using only the Dremel. Not all of us have access to a bench grinder or sander etc. A Dremel would be a cheap entry point for many of us. Maybe it's just not possible to get the shellac mirror finish but it would be a great challenge. Keep it lit as we say here in Ireland.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад

      Hello Nick! Absolutely!!! In fact you can do an entire restoration with no power tools what so ever! It's exactly like woodworking, you can build a nice table with all power tools or no power tools! I subscribe to a channel called 357MagDad and he did a few awesome restorations with very little tooling other then sandpaper, steel wool and elbow grease! Lol. The Dremel is an awesome tool that you should definitely pick up, they are so useful that once you own one you will wonder why it took so long to buy it! Thanks so much!

    I love the restoration. I remember when you did the big brother! I have a question though. I have a Billings 1879 bicycle wrench and I didn’t notice that when I bought it that someone replaced the nut that goes inside. I saw that “Hand Tool Rescue” is remaking these himself and is putting a nut in them but he hasn’t responded to my inquiries about where he sources his nuts (even though I said I’d grab one of his too!) if you know how I could source that but either original or replacement, I would be so happy. Otherwise the restoration is coming along nicely. You’ve inspired me. I’ve got another large Billings and a Plierench to do now.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +2

      Hello Ziya! I just spent 40 minutes looking for that damn nut from the billing restoration I did not long ago! I can't for the life of me find it! I'm really sorry- I will keep looking! I am trying to move, organize and clean up and I suck at all three!!! Lol. I know I didn't throw it out because I don't throw anything out!!! That's my problem!!! I can't even make you a new one because it is a acme thread and beyond my abilities... Hang in there, if I find a beater I will pick it up just for the nut! 😃👍. Plus I'll keep looking! Thanks!!!

    Hello Scout, I found your channel last week and I've been hooked on it ever since. I recently acquired a Little Giant 14" like the one you restored. The adjustable jaw has a pretty good chunk out of it on the front on one side. Would you grind that and shape the other side to match or would you simply clean up the gouge left minimally? Thanks for all the videos.

      Hello KRM- I know that feeling so well... It happens... Sometimes you have to just chalk it up to fate but it's worse when you get a damaged tool from eBay! I bought a few pliers from a seller and they were all very loose.... You can't see that in the pic! Thanks very much!!!!!

    Hi there Scoutcrafter? I recently restored an 8” and a 10” Little Giant, but was unhappy with my lettering done with a sharpie. How do you recommend removing the sharpie without removing the orange enamel paint? Or do I need to just remove all the enamel and start over?
    Lastly, when you use sharpie for lettering do you finish with a clear enamel or spray shellac to protect the lettering?
    Thanks!

    I think they cut it off to get in a tight spot. Adds to the character. It does bother my OCD that you did not paint that top indention in the jaw orange to match the other one. Still a nice job. Did you ever try hitting those deep indentions with a propane torch? I wonder if a little heat might pop them out some or at least mitigate them?

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад

      Hello David! I wanted to but the impression wasn't very deep, and I didn't want the paint chipping in the future... Plus the opposite impression wasn't perfectly straight and I thought it would accent the imperfection! If the steel wasn't polished I might have tried but the paint has a difficult time sticking to smooth surfaces so I try to keep it into recesses and pockets for protection and longevity! =) Thanks!!!!!

    I live near the beach and my outside furniture rusts and needs regular polishing and clear coating. A Dremel is a great tool, but if you ever try to save some dollars and buy the el-cheapo wire brushes remember the eye protection and keep a set of tweezers and a mirror next to you as you work. You will be kept busy pulling out the wire bristles out of your face, they fly like darts. Next time I do it, I will use the full face shield and use up the last of the Chinese wire brushes.

    No doubt the tail end of the movable jaw was ground off. That style wrench requires a lot of room for swing when the jaws are set for a small diameter whatever. The owner must have needed to get into a tight space.

    Very nice restoration but you missed a bit of paint off on top of the removable jaw where the flattened pyramid indentation is, you painted it on the 14inch but not the 10 inch. Quality control slipping. But still look better than new.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +1

      Hello Tony! I didn't miss it, the impression wasn't deep enough to paint without it chipping off in the future, on smooth surfaces the paint has a really hard time adhering so you want to keep it in channels, recesses and pockets, otherwise the lightest handling will remove the paint... That impression was on a bad spot and not deep so I couldn't paint it for that reason!! Thanks!!!!!!

    • @felixf5211
      @felixf5211 6 лет назад +1

      I have a similar lathe. All of the mini-lathes are made by Sieg in China. As you mentioned, the accessories differ as does the length of the bed. The HF lathe has one big drawback; it's a 7x10. Mine started out as the 7x10 and had six inches added to its bed, turning it into a 7x16. Sieg also offers a 7x14. If you're considering a mini-lathe, you may want to opt for one with a longer bed. Makes a significant difference. The HF's tool post is kinda poor, as well, and you'd want to upgrade that as one of the first steps. Take a look at banggood.com for inexpensive lathe accessories. IIRC, their tool post with 4 holders is under $50. Would make your life a lot easier. There's a community of lathe owners with a FB group. A lot of support is available. Good luck.

    Hey ScoutCrafter, on topic of pipewrenches, should the top and bottom jaws always meet perfectly flush or are some models meant to be off ?Been looking at some old wrenches locally but the jaws are off a bit.
    Tks, John in Shreveport....

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад

      Hello John! Great observation! I noticed too that many pipe wrenches don't meet up exactly at the jaw line however still work fine! I have found that if the tool was designed that way it's because some other design reason like swivel head or something. Unless it's bent! Then you can see an obvious bend that don't belong there... Pipe wrenches are so primitive looking but they really are designed with years of trial and error! Thanks so much!!! 😃👍

    Hi there - how do you choose when you use Shellac vs. Mothers or some sort of paste wax? Or use both? I’m new at restoring hand tools and am wondering how you decide when to use which product.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад

      Hello Sean! The first consideration is the environment the tool will be in, if it is outside in a garage you have to really protect the steel, if it's indoors like mine are you have more options! The other thing to consider is if you want a polished surface... Coatings have a hard time sticking to a polished surface so wax is the preferred method. If you need to clear coat the tool you want to make sure there is a little texture to the surface so it can stick... Outside tools need to be coated in some way, usually a clear coat of lacquer or shellac, if you polish the tool make sure it isn't subjected to big temperature swings or excessive humidity... 😃👍

    • @GearedTowardGear1
      @GearedTowardGear1 6 лет назад

      ScoutCrafter Thanks for the reply!! So would it be fair to say that Shellac is used as a surface FINISH where something like paste wax is used as a surface PROTECTANT? Being that all my tools will be in my garage (humid) would it be appropriate to put paste wax on top of a coat of Shellac? I loved your video on Shellac but I think a comprehensive review of finishes and Protestants would make some awesome educational content! Keep up the great work!

    • @GearedTowardGear1
      @GearedTowardGear1 6 лет назад

      *i meant protectants there at the end not Protestants.

      Sean, Some tools will rust just because of the high iron content and others are more resilient, I have a cabin upstate that is unheated and I have a toolbox up there for five years now with no rust. I coated the tools I was worried about with a 50/50 mix of Vaseline and Mineral oil... I have a video titled "All purpose home-brew lubricant" that tells how to make it! 😃👍
