Rick I do have to ask, was the socket faulty?
They make flush fit sockets now. The flaps on that socket have shut with one in, Would have saved you a lot of work.

The socket was good. I have used those. They tend to work well but can sometimes pop out when you unplug the cable. I just did that as a more permanent solution. Since it has two 12v sockets the second one is still there for any future accessories that might need to be plugged in.
