  • Lisa Gade reviews the Dell Latitude 5400 14” mid-tier business Ultrabook. The laptop has a matte display (touch is optional), plenty of ports including Thunderbolt 3 and Ethernet, 2 RAM slots, optional 4G LTE and a pleasing keyboard. It runs Windows 10 on Intel 8th gen 15 watt CPUs with vPro available (Core i3 and quad core i5 and i7 options). It has a fingerprint scanner, optional Windows Hello IR camera, webcam privacy switch and an MS Precision trackpad.

    Well, after we used them for a few months at our office, I can safely say that the previous gen (5490) was better build and designed. Every single user complained about noise and heat. They sound like vacuum cleaners and regularly go over 90 degrees. Build quality is sub standard, some are coming brand new in the box and have bend chassis, factory damaged screens and on some cases batteries are not detected by the motherboard. And as you mentioned, screen is not really bright and some people struggle with it. I hope Dell fixes the issues in the new model this year.

    • @jesusb9562
      @jesusb9562 3 года назад +5

      I've had mine for a couple of months now. The heat and noise is the first thing I noticed. The fan sometimes turns on for no apparent reason (when I am simply web browsing). The computer gets way too hot. I currently have the asus g14 and it is much better.

    I do love these series of laptops. I have both an XPS 15, and a Latitude 5491 (the 4 core 45 watt, Nvidia MX130 version) the huge problem and probably my only true problem with these are the thin coolers. I've had to modify mine just to keep them cool enough without throttling. I don't understand this trend with paper thin coolers. What good is it to spend an extra $250 bucks to basically get the same performance because of throttling. It's highly disappointing. I might expect a thin and light to throttle a little, god knows Apples does. But after modifying the heatsinks thermals are much better. Dell isn't the only one doing this. Lenovo is far worse with this problem. But I was able to refectify much of this by using conductive pads and quality thermal paste. XPS is a much easier fix because of the aluminum bottom plate. But for a sub $2400 laptop, it's very upsetting. For the price you might as well just stick to the lower end of the CPU spectrum or get one with with a U series. Unless of course you love paying good money for very little gains. Other then that, these are awesome notebooks. Built like tanks. I love it.

    • @PsychoStreak
      @PsychoStreak 4 года назад

      The improvements in CPU performance and power consumption, plus faster USB, higher RAM capacity and NVMe are something you should seriously look at. The E series is utterly outclassed at this point by just about any current spec Latitude.
      The one and ONLY thing I miss about the older models is the docks. the Dell USB C & Thunderbolt docks are at best inconsistent.
      That said, Startech's docks play nicely and have better multi-monitor support.

    I buy older dell laptops (5490) because they are repairable, and use them until forced replacement by OS obsolescence.
    The bottom access cover is difficult to remove, and breaks very easily.
    Also, the Realtek audio hardware/driver performance is poor, and no updates have been done to mitigate it. Although my needs do not require much in a laptop, I will be more careful in the future.

      This because the 7490 has heating and fan noise issue....this is even better thermally than 7400...only thing less is screen has less srgb but very correct one..you gottta make a choice and this is more durable long time...also this is less thin but its few mm not a problem

    Overall of the laptop it look good.
    The only stupid design are keyboard. The new design of the F1 to F11 button really non-sense, you need to press fn + F1 ... F11. Besides that, the Home & End button was place in top right, the best fit location of the design should be close left & right key button.
    Meanwhile, the F1 & F11 key are important to programmer, those are the main keyboard use in daily work. Imagine, now they need to press Fn + F5 for thousand of line item debugging, this might cause the an inconvenient to them and slow down the debugging speed.
