I think the developers put the sprite of Luigi flipping the player off in the game's files as a gag. Something that they knew was there and could laugh about but the public wouldn't see (or so they thought).
Love seeing cut and unused content like this from my favorite games. A little suggestion for if and when you do more of these for other games, maybe next time when digging at the start you could accidentally hit a waterline.
I changed my reply because I found out that Mario actually is punching Yoshi on the back of the head. Developers just changed the artwork and what they said was happening because they realized that it would make Mario look too mean.
7:31 This early version of Yoshi is sooo confusing each and every time I see it. Why? Look at its arms. It's _green_ arms. Now look at Yoshi in the final game. His arms are _orange_ for some ungodly reason.
Yeah about that... The Japanese version of Super Mario RPG has Bowser giving a similar pose (more like the up yours sign) when the battle is won And I thought Splatoon has a similar pose as well
I don't know what's the big deal about Yoshi, in the original NES system there was a game called "Adventure Island" where the main character rides different dinosaurs, so the NES had enough power for that
Here's a fun fact that everyone gets wrong. The fish that eats you in Mario 3 is actually called Boss Bass. Big Bertha is the one who spits out her babies at you in underwater stages. And yes boss Bass is a male while big Bertha is female. Also the fire spitting piranha plants were originally called Venus firetraps in the manual. Nintendo used to give Variants on enemies their own names back then, instead of slapping big, super, or mega on their names.
Apparently Mario was supposed to have wings at one point. I never thought he would look good with wings on his back but he looks way better with that tanooki tail
I'm very late to this party (just stumbled across the video), but in regards to the Luigi middle finger: It's likely that it was a gag, but its also very possible that the developers didn't know what the middle finger meant, because for a long time (especially in 1989), people in Japan saw middle fingers depicted from western media (like movies) but didn't know what it actually meant, so it was very common for people to just randomly flip the bird to mimic westerners, having no idea what they were doing. Including children. People would do it when taking pictures too.
@@drwily no like you didn't fully explain it. it's total to be exact that with the game Tennis, and a very complicated set up, then in SMB you hold start and a, you can go to a glitch world.

I think that the black and white sprite sheet is for a very early version of Super Mario Land 2
Awesome video

ahhahah yeah could be
they could have been trying to give him a thumbs up but failed (which could be why he doesnt do any hand gesture)

I remembered playing Super Mario World on the Game Boy when I was younger and I was obsessed with this game alongside Mario + Luigi Superstar Saga

Hahahaha that would be funny for a gag as well
Funfact: Mario does not hit yoshi, instead he points at the thing ahead of him and it basically triggers Yoshi's eating
I knew this all along.
But he uses his fist...

his beta sprites give us a better showing of proof that mario does whack yoshi
@Jeffrey Dotson Mean? More like a freaking slave driver.

I think the one in the final game is supposed to be gloves
I like the details in the video. He explained a lot of detail wich makes the video way more interesting

I always loved the BIlls with the Shark mouth as I'm a fan of military nose art and the shark mouth is one of the classics.

Adventure island came our way after SMB. There was far more time for optimization
@@wolfetteplays8894 yeah, but it was done on the NES, therefore in any SMB sequel they could've had Yoshi
The original 1989 Start Screen looked more like a Game Boy screen.

Someone please give this guy 1 million subscribers he deserves it
yesssssss
Thanks for this! There was a lot you said today that I didn't know before.
8:30 Maybe just me, but Middle Finger Luigi looks more like Luigi riding on Yoshi's back giving a Victory sign.
hmmmm would be an interesting way of expressing him self than hahahah
6:56 They don’t like releasing unfinished builds, does scarlet and violet count
ahhahahaha i approve this roast
11:02 that looks like the offspring of Alphys and Cookie Monster 😂😂
