HELL YEAH. Hands down, my favorite Judas Priest song. Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing KILL it on guitar, and Rob Halford's voice hits like a sledgehammer. This came out when I was 13 and yes I cranked it to 11 every time it came on (but had to turn it down seconds later because, you know, parents). For your next one, I recommend "Turbo Lover" or "Breakin' the Law". To answer your question JP formed in 1969, releasing their first major album, Rocka Rolla, in 1974. This song was released in 1982, the song that made them HUGE in the United States. This song was literally everywhere in 1982.

Painkiller was 1990, they worked hard to rid themselves of the hairmetal image they had gotten from the Turbo album in 86. Plus, the era called for heavier stuff. Painkiller was the heaviest thing they EVER did, and they totally redeemed themselves. This song is from 1982 and one of their better albums. They've been doing albums 1974 to present. My personal fave is either Sad Wings of Destiny from 76 or Stained Class from 78 with Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith as contenders. When Rob Halford came out it made a lot of super-masculine metalheads rethink what masculinity is and helped take everyone one more step toward excepting others different from themselves. His autobiography "Confess" is amazing.

That's the funny thing about it all now looking back , A lot of us knew he was Gay back then and he had us all wearing leather S&M gear lol , And it was perceived as so macho and tough then and even
      now :) .

He’s wearing leather and studs and driving around the stage on a Harley, not exactly effeminate (though totally S&M). Two was where he really laid on the mascara and makeup.

It was so funny like, three or so years ago when the woketards found out 'big bad metalhead' rob halyard was hard leather gay. Then they went all "SEE SEE SEE haa haa haa!" As if they were 'owning' clueless metalheads who were OBVIOUSLY homophobic, of course because DUH. Only for us metalheads to go. "Uh... yea we always KNEW he was gay. Where the fuck you been for goddam 40 years?who cares? He created heavy metal."

He didn't 'come out'. Retarded leftoids finally noticed what we 'super masculine' metalheads knew all along. And the proceeded to crow about it and brag as if they were somehow 'owning' us filthy toxicly male evil metalheads. No metalhead gives a flying fuck he's the hard gay. Be more of a fucking poser.

There was no "kerfuffle" when Rob came out. Some mild shock or surprise maybe then after thinking about it for just a few minutes most fans just thought, "yeah that actually explains a lot" lol, the leather the studs the whips an chains etc. Really was a non event of an announcement.

Painkiller was not your best choice. I'd recommend Electric Eye, Living After Midnight, or Hell Bent for Leather before digging into some lesser known gems. Their covers of Joan Baez's Diamonds and Rust or Fleetwood Mac's Green Manalishi with the Two Pronged Crown are both excellent as well.

I saw these guys in Atlanta back in the 80’s. I had backstage passes and was back stage talking with members of Dokken. Next thing I know, EVERYONE goes silent. I couldn’t figure out why. Then I see all 5 guys from Judas Priest walking toward the stage. It was honestly like being in the presence of royalty. I’ll never forget how incredible it was.

But now I am older, wiser and have experienced so much life and I can really appreciate this awesome band! I guess I had "another thing coming!"

Another uk band that is really good is Saxon, they are somewhat similar to Judas Priest and I would recommend for you guys to listen to "Wheels of Steel" or you could even to one of their newer hits called "Carpe Diem (Seize the Day)". The singer of the band is Biff Byford and he is an amazing singer, even in their newer hit that was released this year he can still hit high vocals.

You asked about what time frame Priest was around. They started in the 1970's and are still around today. One of the guitarists left, then the second got Parkinsons, so he is semi-retired. He contributed to the last album that they released in 2018, but didn't tour with the band that year. I saw them on that tour, and Rob Halford is still amazing. He's one of my top two metal voices of all time, and unlike the other, Sebastian Bach, Rob's still got his voice. You should check out "No Surrender" or "Lightning Strikes" off of their last album to see just how much the guys still bring to the table.
