I played it on SEGA Channel, my cousin had it at the time. It was AMAZING stuff. What blew my mind at the time were the very clear audio clips that would play at specific times. One that sticks out in my memory is traveling through a mountain stage, you travel under a waterfall and it disables your electrical powers. And then the main baddie shows up in the foreground and proclaims "WATER IS PULSMAN'S WEAKNESS!" then sunk back under the screen line laughing evilly.

I definitely remember loving Pulseman's design when I was younger. I'd actually heard of him long before I was able to play his game 'cause I grew up in Hawaii and a bunch of my friends had Japanese gaming mags that I believe had articles like "The folks who made Pokemon also made THIS!" but...y'know, we couldn't read it, so we just liked the pretty pictures XD I think I even remember one of my friends being "That kid" who tried to convince people that Pulseman WAS a Pokemon and you had to do a bunch of crazy stuff to unlock him in Red and Blue.

YES! I had Sega Channel for about 6 months before they discontinued it. I can't remember if I played this game, though it does look familiar. I always looked forward to the 1st of the month to see what new games would be available to play.
Sega Channel required cable TV, and it would take anywhere from 2-5 minutes to download a game to play it, even on cable. It was great to play demos and games that I didn't own.

Oh god, i remember that waiting as a kid. Back when i was full of ADHD and Dial-up was the most widely used way to connect to the net.
I specifically remember only being able to play Sega Channel after dinner because my Grandfather Ran a business and he need his Fax-Machine online and active but that required its own dedicated phone dial-up.....
Some things i dont miss about the 1990’s..... 🤔

I remember the Sega Channel. I had it for a few months as a kid. Grama ordered it for me n my siblings. It Was pretty cool in back in the sorta pre-internet era where the www.(World Wide Web) was still pretty niche and kids weren’t encouraged to spend all day indoors.
    i miss the 1990’s....... well mostly 🤔

Yeah, it's pretty safe to say I'm *HEAVILY* invested in Pulseman. And my love for him is why I made him the Project2612 mascot.
Thanks for shedding a little more light on him for the world. :)

Grew up in a small town in Kentucky, had Sega Channel because it was more convenient than repeated weekend runs across town to the video rental place. I tried Pulseman because I was looking for something to follow the excellence of Mega Man X and Sonic 3. I was rewarded with a darn fine game, which I have since purchased as a physical copy and on the Wii Virtual Console.

4:12 Oh, feathers are ruffled, all right! I think the Genesis had a higher music ceiling than the SNES, but the skill needed to hit that ceiling meant that the SNES had more games overall that sounded good.

This is absolutely the correct take, Mike. Runner AD2025 from Alien Soldier is the goods. If they tried, they could make the Genesis do something really special.

I think 16 bit game music sounds very Keyboard/Synthesizer esque.. Thus the greater the variety of key signatures, chords, and sounds in a game’s soundtrack, the better it sounds.

Always wanted the Sega Channel but parents could never afford it. Sad really, I would have loved to have it. Also, Sega does get flack for their music but honestly look at Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Sonic, Castlevania Bloodlines, Phantasy Star....Sega's music was extremely under-appreciated. Thanks so much Aaron!

    • @retroprojections

Absolutely, we wanted to have the Sega channel, but the cost was prohibitive. After all, we would have needed a dedicated phone line, an internet connection, and subscription to the service, plus those connection boxes had to be purchased from Sega. I think it was something like $90 monthly back in the day, whew.

2:17 Sweet jeebus, that is WAY too many colors. I never thought I'd see a Genesis/MD game I genuinely thought was TOO colorful, but there you go. Even with a limited palette, it's still possible to go overboard.

3:11. I think the same thing when it comes to Sonic Rush, the DS port of Sonic Colors: Which is essentially a beautifully reskinned rush with more zones and the wisps added to the power up and move sets. Sonic 1 & 2 give me headaches if I sloppily rush Green Hill Zone in 1, or Chemical Plant Zone in 2.

My younger cousin had Sega Channel and I'd offer to babysit just for the chance to try it out.
It was definitely ahead of it's time, but the internet connection was slow back then, it took what seemed like forever just to download a rom.
However, my first time with Pulseman was years later on Wii VC.
It's definitely one of the best games on the Mega Drive/Genesis that we never had officially released here.

Always been interested in this game, yet to try it though, however I did have sega channel back in the day and it was really amazing...when it worked. I had sega channel as a kid. It was the best. Way ahead of it's time. Apparently, the disney channel was a pay channel at the time, and my mom asked me if I wanted sega channel or disney channel. Obviously I was a wise kid and chose the sega channel.
This game seems familiar to me, so I must have played it. Don't remember anything beyond "seems familiar' though lol.

  • @MotherKojiro

I've played this, but it's clear that I haven't given it enough of a chance; I've got to pick this up again! As for Genesis music, I think it's an acquired taste, and I say that as a fan. You have your Sonic - everyone likes Sonic - but a lot of it, you just need to find your gateway drug to make it click. For me, that was Time Trax by the legendary Follin Brothers. The 50hz version, that is; the 60hz version sounds like bad dance aerobics music from the early '90s, because it wasn't made for that playback speed.

Sega Channel was rad. We had it as kids. It was always fun and interesting to see what new games were on it each month. So many gems, and a few exclusives too as mentioned.
The only downside was waiting. It took a few minutes for each game to load, which was like an eternity as a kid, though there was a text window dropping news and game hints while you waited. Didn't matter much to me back then, but it was a nice touch in hindsight.
On the subject of exclusives, though, there was a game I remember hearing was made specifically for the Sega Channel called "Dinosaurs for Hire." It may not have actually been, but even so it's odd and obscure enough I would recommend checking it out. Could make for an interesting video, despite its mediocre gameplay.

That darn GEMS Driver really hurt the image of Mega Drive/Genesis music. Handled correctly the sound chip could sound mind blowing. Instead of putting in effort, western developers used that crappy tool. Sometimes to OK results but mostly to ear bleeding screeching and scratching which will drive you insane!

I have an original Japanese copy of Pulseman, but I've only ever played it on my Japanese Mega Drive. I've never put it in any of my US consoles. I got it absurdly cheap in a massive Mega Drive lot that was worth a ton more than I paid even 15 years ago, and now could probably pay for a car. Good luck comes now and then!
Honestly? Don't care for Pulseman much, though. I would never try to dissuade someone else from trying it, and was excited to do so myself, but it feels a little stiff for my liking, like somewhere in between Sonic and Mega Man, which just isn't for me. I think my favorite Game Freak game is still Drill Dozer.
Fun stuff to cover, and nice video!

I love me some Pulseman though I never knew about that _insane_ story though, lol. Any game that has a zippy, "45° bounce" traversal move a la Rocket Knight or Freedom Planet is almost always going to be fun to mess with. Glad to see this one ported to later platforms over the years - if it wasn't for the release on the ol' Wii Virtual Console, I never would've gotten to play this. Game Freak should put out some kind of physical collection with their non-Pokemon games; get this, Smart Ball, Bushi Seiryūden, Drill Dozer, HarmoKnight, Tembo, and Giga Wrecker all on one disc. Their sidescrollers are all pretty creative, well made and quite enjoyable.
Awesome time to look at something like this with its connection to the Sega Channel and status as a download-only game (outside of Japan). With Sony shutting down the PS3/PSP/PS Vita/PS1 Classics/PS2 Classics/PC Engine & TurboGrafx Classics part of the PSN soon, I sure do wish _way more_ digital-only games managed to get some physical releases or ROM Dumps or whatever before just a whole swath of 'em disappear for good...

Played it? Yeah, I got a physical copy. One that's in English that I've played on my Genesis before. I was starting to think that it must be a fan-made cartridge and box (it's got the clamshell case, instruction manual, and everything all in English) and I guess this pretty much confirms it.
As for the game it's visually fun and all, but I didn't get too far into the game. I like it, but never find myself having the time to play it much. Also the animation on his run-cycle could use a few more frames.
