considering that a turbo depends on exhaust gas speed and pressure to spool up your entire point of "NA cars need high revs" is other bs. Shifting to early is an issue for any car's power but to be precise, high rev numbers are worse for NA systems and you need to hit the right rev parameter at around typically 3000-4000 rpm to have full power. At higher revs near 7000 rpm an NA engine will have issues filling the piston cylinders with fresh air and exhausting the exhaust air effectively
@@dergunter1237 What you say about 3000-4000 rpm to have full power is true for my 1.6 (non turbo) Škoda. Car owner said that car is dead up to 6000rpm. It is a sports car, should be shifting near or in red to get performance. On car spec page is written "Rev. at Max Power 7,000 rpm " and in video that is just entry point of red zone. Losing power happens later. Like I said, I agree with you about turbo or non turbo engine, works that way. But this is a sports car, and if you do not rev it near red, you are in ECO mod.
I’ve been seriously considering going from an Audi TT to this. However, a common theme in owner review videos is the engine, and being underwhelmed by it. You nailed it for me in your review, I will reluctantly pass on this. I despise modifications and would never modify an engine, so it has to be good out of the box, I really wanted it to be, but this obviously isn’t.
The engine power is fine, and the gear ratios are short. It's always a great time to drive and bang through gears. No reason for any more power in a light rear wheel drive car
Turn signal is good in my opinion. RTV issue is real, but it dont blow up engine and it dont cause low oil pressure. Oil starvation is problem if you are using wider grippier tires and driving car on track, its a normal car, so it should be driven on normal roads. And you can fix the problem with pressure by adding 0,5 quart overfill of oil. So i dont think it is a big problem
I wanted this car so bad, but after driving a new BRZ and a new MX5 back to back, the Miata was a whole nother level above this. The engine sound and feel, the shifter, the clutch, the throttle mapping, no rev hang. The mazda just feels special. Also fuck that turn signal stock. The engine reliability also worries me. The hair on my head touches the roof in the miata but I don't care. It's a better car hands down.
only thing that sucks about MX-5 is that it has no non retractable roof option which sucks for people in shit climate areas. That said the ND is superior in any way besides this one point to the Br86
Cold air is denser, which allows a NA engine to produce more power. So it's expected that the car will be slower in hot weather and faster in cold weather (e.g., probably at night). Did you account for that?
Here's my two cents. The clutch and throttle feels vauge. When it was finally my turn to buy the car after being on the waitlist for months. I test drove this thing and I stalled it more than I would like and accidentally ride the clutch too. The throttle response combine with it's weird engagment point just left a bad taste. I left the dealership feeling conflicted, but now I'm glad that I didn't buy it after hearing all the other issues.

I like the seats. I have a brz limited (higher tier) and it feels like I'm held in snuggly to keep my back somewhat straight (better than a lot of other cars I've driven. criticism is always the best way to improvement. but I find it crazy the amount of people that hate the turn signal I think its good and just a skill issue
Sorry you're not enjoying the car so much, Austin. I liked it when I drove it, but that was at high speeds/RPMs for only about 15 minutes, so I wasn't living with it on a day-to-day basis, and didn't get to see any of the negatives you're experiencing. That being said, I had the chance to get a Premium model and passed on it, partly because of the issues they've been having with the engine. While 99% of the cars may be fine, I don't want to take a chance on a car that seems to have a design flaw right out of the box. Are you still planning on keeping the car? You've gotten rid of cars you seem to have liked more, so I don't see a reason to keep this if you've got more things you dislike about it than like. Plus, with them still being pretty limited in availability, now might be the best time to sell in order to get the most money for it.
considering the redesign on the oil pickup tube it implies that subaru was aware of the RTV issue but instead of fixing it they opted to use a different pickup tube to minimize (but not fix) the issue probably due to cost cutting
Everyone's gonna have pros n cons but at the end of the day it's either this or Miata for new RWD NA around 30k, and for many of us who only have 1 car a Miata isn't practical enough. All small cars lose power quickly from using AC/high ambient temps/high alititude, I don't believe thats a tuning issue. What octane gas are you using? That could factor in as well to the power lose?
Totally agree with you on the turn signals. Rented a new BRZ for a weekend and that drove me insane. Tesla Model 3 and older BMWs have the same problem.
I got floor mats, however cost alot and was listed as an option. Wth, the mats were marked up to $475. I agree, the hp needs to be at least 290. I don't like the cheap plastic. It scratches so easy. Also the dome lights are not LED, AND i have had a probkem with the passenger side going out. Still waiting on part at dealership so it can be fixed. The cloth seats look cheap too. I disconnected the active noise. It was too much. Great looking car, exceot for the shark fin. At times the vehicle feels quick. Moves flawless, and at times, quirky, so inconsistent in performance. AC draws to much power, as well as Florida heat. If you put a passenger in the car that ways over 259lbs forget about it. You will realize that the car lacks power.
Man, I’m sorry to hear about your gauge cluster lag. That’s gotta be annoying. I have a 2023 gr86 premium AT and I can’t say I’ve experienced that so it may be a thing with manual but it shouldn’t be a thing at all 👌
Hi man, just found your channel and subscribed. thanks for the great content. I'm looking forward to get a brz / gr86 next year... however I am worried with the RTV Issue (I heard it is fixed on the newer model), and also the oil pressure drop when turning right...do you have experiences regarding these issues? does it bother you? thankss!
Thank you! I appreciate that! If you’re going to track the car extensively, I would worry about it. If you aren’t going to track it then I wouldn’t worry.
the RTV issues doesnt seem to be resolved. Was interested in this care therefor I paid attention since it came out and as far as I can see toyota simply refuses to acknowledge the issue at all. The oil pressure drop during cornering issue is independent of the RTV issue tho. Its due to a standard design of the oil pickup system. Either you need a baffled oil pan or even better a dry sump system. It just sucks how promising the car was and now it turns out to have tons of issues due to massive cost cutting. Seems like toyota is suffering from the VW syndrome, i.e. get big due to good quality cars for a fair price and than cut corners where ever you can to increase quarterly profit margins
The turn signal issue to me is not an issue. The inside noise, all you have to do is disconnect the connector, it’s not that hard to do. It’s a $30,000 car, it’s not a $50,000 car. Also the consule is a consule, how fancy does it need to be. There are some things that I don’t like about it,but it is what it is. No vehicle is perfect in my mind.
I disconnected the sound and discussed that. I also talk about this is what you get for 30k. Like you mentioned there are some things you don’t like about it. These are things I don’t like. Just shared the things I love about it.
I dont like the sound system, and my dirvers side door likes to close on me after i open it as if my struts are worn out or something. Its fantastic otherwise to me. Your own points are valid for sure.
Oil issue? I've owned a gt86 for 5 years bought it with 35k miles now over 110000k miles, never had the slightest issue with anything let alone burning oil lol, why would this new model have this issue???
vortexes from truck, crosswinds...car is so light....but i love it, 33k on my 22 auto trans. highway miles.....oh the radio sucks ....needs some alpine speakers like on my 79 triumph spitfire....im old.....love it....
Man,the console screen is like Spongebob stands in group of avengers. It feels so isolated and left out. The turn signal is the most stupid design I ever met in any car I had driven. It is so annoying! Also, How do you feel about the throttle mapping? people say Brz is more linear compare to gr86?
For most people the pros of this car greatly outweigh the cons. I am still waiting for mine to role off the factory line but I am aware of the fact I am sort off buying a 90's car in 2023. No tech, lot of noises, just light weight, balanced RWD manual car...and with a 10 year warranty.
I think you’re being way too critical. Even with my air-conditioning on full, I never seem to lose power. The turn signals are stupid. I agree with that. I think maybe you’re asking too much for a car at this price point
I hate that every time I open the door, the window slides down. I get it, it’s to allow the window sit flush against the rubber seal. However, it gets dusty in my area where small dirt and debris sit on window. When I open and close my door I always hear a slight grind with that dirt against the window. I almost have to clean my window every time before opening it but that’s not practical.
As someone who has a 2023 BRZ and a first manual, yeah there are annoyances. Biggest gripe is no wireless android auto/apple carplay when designing a car with no space to put anything. My kia soul has a way better sound system with a big ass 12" subwoofer box taking up the trunk, and those stock speakers are not great but way better than the brz's. It holds many people and is great for traveling. My brz sucks in those regards. It's been in the shop for 4 days now (ppf and ceramic coating), and all I can say is I miss it like crazy. The kia is better for music, and "better" in traffic, but the brz is just way more fun and way more engaging in manual. It makes up for it's shortcomings. All I would say is make sure you have a more livable car to daily, or at the very least live with someone willing to let you use their car sometimes (either to take a break or to buy/move lots of stuff). That and a more reliable car is a good idea
That turn signal thing is seriously annoying. Is there a known way to make it function normally or a mod to make it do so? Why did they change an already perfectly functioning design? The fake engine sound stuff is so cringey too, but at least you can disable it.
I mostly agree with your thought, some are less annoying for me like LCD screen quality I can live with etc... BUT I'm really pissed of by the lack of position memory in the seats, witch also come back from folding position with a weird over bent back killer position..... in a 23' coupé in witch the point is to fold seats to access the rear? Seriously? Oh and I've appreciated a 1/3 2/3 backseats folder.
Honest fair and thorough review! Thank you! I've been on the fence on this 86 platform since it's inception! Just when I think I'm ready to take the shot, Embiid's big ass hand pops up and blocks it!😅 I'd still like a better more modern factory head unit! And yes, still more hp! I'm some what an older guy but still prefer sportier cars to daily. With said, I still like my tech and tunes, and don't wanna buy a new car and have to gut and replace. And i prefer JDM! So I'm still waiting,,,,,, lol, thanks!

I think this car isn’t worth $40k, but I got mine at $29k and think it’s the bargain of the century. At $40k there are better options. My base model did not come with floor mats, but the salesmen tossed the fabric ones in for free (pretty sure a premium buyer got rubber ones and the fabric ones were his lol). For me, I want to use this car to get HPDE 3, then I’ll move up to something else fast. Probably a Cayman.

All your comments complaints were reasonable excepting guage cluster. if you need a guage cluster 1: to tell u what gear you’re in or 2: to tell you the car is at a standstill then don’t drive a manual
I paid $29k for my GR86, a club Miata is around $40k. Bought the car for the track. At $40k, I could buy a 2019ish Camaro SS 1LE, so the Miata was never a reasonable option.
I think it’s bullshit that we are settling for less why paying more money for things. The technology in cars isn’t new anymore the engines are getting smaller. When you look into these cars what is really different from cars in the 80s that were coming with turbocharged 4 cylinder engines like the Shelby charger ,Shelby GLHS , Mazda 323 GTX which is all wheel drive and Volkswagen GTI etc… just to name few. For 30.000 dollars I want a better freaking radio and the best floor mats should come with that price and better seats. It really doesn’t cost much for them to add these things. If that radio was an after market one it would probably cost $60 and the seats maybe $100 each and the floor mats maybe $70. So demand more for your money and people should stop saying that for 30 or 40 thousand dollars it is a good deal ….no it’s not it’s bullshit 😊

I took mine back to the dealership and demanded floor mats and got em
Good for you!!
Go drive one if you can and see for yourself what it’s like
How is TT for you?
The engine power is fine, and the gear ratios are short. It's always a great time to drive and bang through gears. No reason for any more power in a light rear wheel drive car
I would recommend you drive one
TT is superior even in reliability
i bought the base model and mine ONLY came with the all-weather floor mats
You probably paid for them via the price of the car as an ordered option.
Check out my video on the Tuxmats for the GR86, they are really nice and wrap around the entire cars interior. Protects it from literally everything.
Thanks!
All good reasons for sure!
only thing that sucks about MX-5 is that it has no non retractable roof option which sucks for people in shit climate areas. That said the ND is superior in any way besides this one point to the Br86
RF no good?@@dergunter1237
Cold air is denser, which allows a NA engine to produce more power. So it's expected that the car will be slower in hot weather and faster in cold weather (e.g., probably at night). Did you account for that?
I did and I have owned a lot of different types of cars. This just seem to be affected more by it
This man speaks the truth
Thanks!
Sorry it didn’t work out!
I'm new to this channel. Where do you live? The area you live in is absolutely beautiful.
Welcome! Utah
@@Gonin60 what city? I've seen areas of SLC that definitely look nice as far as the hills in the background, but I mean the neighborhood. The entire area is clean and the structures look either new or very well maintained. I've also never seen what appears to be a church in a neighborhood.

All true. I had a 2023 premium MT. After owning it half years, I decide to let it go. The interior really really disappoints me. Turn signal, fake engine sound, bad music speakers.. all terrible. Its true that GR86 is a fun car but that is all.
You summed it up perfectly!
Best to go for Corolla GR before this car's engine blows up on the track-- out of warranty. There are mods to "fix" the oil starvation a high lateral Gs but sad you have to do this on a new car.
There hasn’t been that many that have had engine issues. Will be interesting to see how the higher milage ones do.
there havent been that many Gr86 sold either, plus the engine issues we know of, we only know of because it happend to someone with a lot of public reach @@Gonin60
The car only has 228 horsepower and 184 lbs of torque with a weight of 2838 pounds. What do you expect. My 2023 Camaro ZL1 didn't come with back seat floor mats. Although that back seat is useless. I can't wait to see what car you are getting next. Thank you for the video sir.
Not the power it’s the tune and how it comes on
My base model came with rubber GR86 stamped floor mats.
Must have been ordered with some
i was deciding between this and an fk8, i ultimately went with the fk8.
Good choice
How does it drive in SLC winter?
Haven’t driven it in snow so can’t say
Well find out together lol
I like my first gen brz so much that I bought a second one. Exhaust, tune, 93 octane or e85 and they become the platform they should be.
Congrats
I own a 2022 GR86 and find the road noise level inside the vehicle to be annoying.
Part of that is tires. The PS4s on the premium (if you have them) are stupidly loud..can always add some sound deadening material if needed. Or get a Supra 😂
I agree
@@ghrtt7tires are part of it. Many owners mentioned switching to a different brand of tires definitely helped. I also mentioned adding sound deadening as a last resort. Can do the rear wheel wells, doors, even headliner area etc. and it helps.
@@ghrtt7 fair enough. They are noisy no matter what above 40mph imo, unless you do at least a partial teardown of the interior and add sound deadening. Tires vary no matter what.
how do you like the seats ? how is the low back support?
I don’t mind the seats. Not super comfortable but livable. As for lower back support hard to say. They do hold you in nicely
I like the seats. I have a brz limited (higher tier) and it feels like I'm held in snuggly to keep my back somewhat straight (better than a lot of other cars I've driven. Though this is my first sports car). Takes a while for me to feel uncomfortable, and I'm almost always uncomfortable in a car after 15 mins. This is probably an hour or 2 for me. So a lot more comfortable than I thought it would be
At first I thought oh no this is going to ruin it for me since I have a 2023 GR86 premium MT. I am not experiencing any of those annoyances with mine.
Great! Everyone will have different issues or gripes. It’s a great car!
Thanks for this video. Put a deposit down on one and am in the waiting phase. Currently have a new gen Si and have way more dislikes than likes. Hoping the GR is something I like long term, but the RTV/oil pressure situation is very concerning (long-term). Also thinking about a new gen GTI, but that has it's own quirks too.
What haven’t you liked on the Si?
@@Gonin60 bigger than i need most of the time, feels very tame despite making more power than my 8th gen Si, and it shifts like crap when is cold out.
Might look at a Mk 7.5 or 8 GTI. Off to your golf R video!
The subaru seat belt chimes the best, plug in it goes off, don't plug in, after a while it just turns off and stops annoying you. Some cars just keep beeping forever thats the worst.
I don’t think it works that way unless I’m missing something. These annoy you for forever and get louder
criticism is always the best way to improvement. but I find it crazy the amount of people that hate the turn signal I think its good and just a skill issue
Ok
Hey man! You know me well! If you want to email me I’ll give you the latest. Hope all is well!
considering the redesign on the oil pickup tube it implies that subaru was aware of the RTV issue but instead of fixing it they opted to use a different pickup tube to minimize (but not fix) the issue probably due to cost cutting
I used to own a ae86 and I know the 4age well. You have to understand the design intent. This typical 4 banger performance.
I understand the design intent
You would think you didn’t do research on what to expect as far as the interior. Good review for sure
Okay
Everyone's gonna have pros n cons but at the end of the day it's either this or Miata for new RWD NA around 30k, and for many of us who only have 1 car a Miata isn't practical enough. All small cars lose power quickly from using AC/high ambient temps/high alititude, I don't believe thats a tuning issue. What octane gas are you using? That could factor in as well to the power lose?
The car from 4-6k feels dead and there is a still a dip in torque on the graph. Challenge is still the tune for me. Ac and temps add to it
@@Gonin60 ah well, the Miata also isn’t great in the midrange. It could probably be tuned out but you’d sacrifice low or high end.
Totally agree with you on the turn signals. Rented a new BRZ for a weekend and that drove me insane. Tesla Model 3 and older BMWs have the same problem.
I can’t stand them lol
You hit on a lot of things that I noticed too. Thanks for sharing!
Man, I’m sorry to hear about your gauge cluster lag. That’s gotta be annoying. I have a 2023 gr86 premium AT and I can’t say I’ve experienced that so it may be a thing with manual but it shouldn’t be a thing at all 👌
I think it’s a manual thing
Yeah sound system is not good but for the price it’s hard to expect different
Good overview as always

the oil issues would keep me far away.
Mainly people tracking their car on long right hand turns are having issues. It’s a small case though
Oil issue? I've owned a gt86 for 5 years bought it with 35k miles now over 110000k miles, never had the slightest issue with anything let alone burning oil lol, why would this new model have this issue???

Man,the console screen is like Spongebob stands in group of avengers. It feels so isolated and left out.
The turn signal is the most stupid design I ever met in any car I had driven. It is so annoying!
Also, How do you feel about the throttle mapping? people say Brz is more linear compare to gr86?
It is more linear and the GR86 has a harder acceleration off the start
For most people the pros of this car greatly outweigh the cons. I am still waiting for mine to role off the factory line but I am aware of the fact I am sort off buying a 90's car in 2023. No tech, lot of noises, just light weight, balanced RWD manual car...and with a 10 year warranty.
Congrats!
I think you’re being way too critical. Even with my air-conditioning on full, I never seem to lose power. The turn signals are stupid. I agree with that.

Yeah most all sports cars do this now but that would bug me to hear that grind for sure.
Shouldn’t have bought the car then if you knew about the dirt
I always thought they drop to release air pressure so the door will close.

Thanks for sharing!
That turn signal thing is seriously annoying. Is there a known way to make it function normally or a mod to make it do so? Why did they change an already perfectly functioning design? The fake engine sound stuff is so cringey too, but at least you can disable it.
Sounds can be turned off really easy. As for the turn signals I don’t think so. Some angry Karen’s have told me it’s user error lol
