I watch this video so many times I now find that I order the panel and material and sew it ready for Christmas. I find Tammy is brilliant at teaching, and demonstrate how to do it every step of the way.
I enjoy making these window quilts, deer, gators, fish, floral gatdens, etc. Love the ombre lights idea, so pretty. You are my favorire tutor on Shabby Fabrics, so down to earth and easy to follow. Keep up the good work, I so enjoy watching you create. I just purchased several of the Santa's List panels.
Such a cute idea to use this method on animals and landscape scenes, we love that! Tammy is such a great teacher, we're glad you enjoy her videos as much as we do! :) Let us know how your Santa's List panels turn out! - Morgan
I just found this video. Thank you for this tutorial. I have panels I want to do this technique with. I would stitch the brown squares "snowballing" the corner before cutting.
I printed the download and plan to start this as soon as possible. But with the triangles, I sew them on first, then trim. I'm pattern dyslexic and it's very easy to make mistakes. Sewing it first makes it easier for me to be sure I have it right. Great video/great teacher.
I remember when this video first came out. I loved watching her calming demonstration so much that I started searching for other videos she was doing. I looked for the pattern again because it was “free” 3 years ago. Although, it says it’s a free download now, it’s not. They want you to give them your email address first. Lovely video though.
I love those window quilts, I am new at this and so scared to cut a panel and ruin it but you are giving me hope that I could do this….if I take my time…..
My gosh that panel is gorgeous! Just a nostalgic piece that will never go out of fashion. I am not a quilter but I watched the entire vid. The window pane technique was beautiful! Thanks for keeping my attention. Your a great instructor also!
I absolutely love your videos. I am relatively new to quilting and I appreciate that you explain why you do what you are doing. Like when you pinned so far from the sewing side. Not all of us are seasoned, but with your expertise and guidance we will get there. If I could change one thing about the Shabby Fabrics videos it would be more close up shots. When you showed the mitered corner I feel it needed a close up. Again, thank you for an easy project to help ease us newbies into your world of quilts and fun projects! Merry Christmas and Happy Hoildays!!
Just WOW. How well done is this lesson. I will be watching this more than once or twice. Thank you for a great lesson. I wish all of you Merry Christmas and a very good 2020.
It’s beautiful. What about taking a half inch off each side of the panel pieces so there is a smooth transition? So, you don’t have a very long leg behind the window frame on teddy, for instance. Not sure if I’m saying this clearly....
The tip about a starter strip will improve my sewing. The clever technique for the window is so great! You have motivated me to look at my panels with a new eye: I have a landscape one that will look really nice. I’m off to order the ombre fabric! Thank you!
So glad to hear that you found this helpful! It's so fun to think up new things to do with panels! Let us know how yours turns out, we'd love to hear about it! - Morgan
What a remarkable teacher you are, Tammy! (I was an elementary teacher and principal for 43 years so I know great teaching when I see it!) It’s a mitzvah to demonstrate precision in cutting in such an accessible way: you made it seem easy, which makes your viewers increasingly confident. The lamplight emphasis is new to me; I’ve just relied on the traditional contrast. The method for mitering is good for many and it’s an excellent strategy to teach. Personally, I prefer the traditional way because it’s easy for me and I find the diagonal seam distracting, but that’s just me. The panel is a delight. Is it just me, or is it harder and harder to find high quality panels in stores anymore? Maybe that’s just nostalgia for The Before Times…. This was such a lovely video and I enjoyed it no end. Thank you.
Thank you for the great tutorial, your style is very informative and not rushed. it is good to see pins being used to keep the seems nestled too. That technique does appear to be more accurate and less problematic than using the "Y" seam.
Thank you! We're so glad you like the video! It's definitely more accurate and so much easier to do! Let us know if you give this a try, we'd love to hear about it. - Morgan

Love this video. I have never purchased a panel that was printed on the straight of grain. I always struggled w/ trying to figure out how to cut & straighten the edges. I like how you approach this. I especially love your technique to avoid y seams. I will try to do this w/ any y seams in the future. I always wanted to make an attic windows quilt but avoided it because of the dreaded y seams. Thanks for sharing so I can make one.
Sunflower Baby Donna Jordan has some videos where she shows how to straighten crooked panels, too. I always struggled with this as well. You might find she has some additional tips to help. I haven’t tried it yet, though, but did find it helpful.
Thank you for this great video. Your quilt is beautiful! I plan to make a Christmas Quilt similar to this and will quilt it on my domestic machine. Do you have any suggestions on how to quilt it. I usually simply do a serpentine stitch. Thank you.
Hi Glenna - We like to start by stitching around the window panels like a stitch-in-the-ditch, then we accent some of the main print by quilting around the edges. A lattice design would also be nice. The end result doesn't matter - as long as you enjoy it! -Michelle

Great job Tammy! Helpful cutting & construction tips. Love no Y seams lol , and the use of gradient color to help accentuate the lighting was a wonderful aha moment. Your systematic delivery is very much appreciated❣️. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas 🎄.
Hi Thomasean Britten - We no longer have this specific panel in stock, but we would recommend finding one that suits the style you prefer, if you're able to. Some creators have experimented with using water color paints or even colored pencils on their fabrics to add shadows or create a different look (however, those things would probably wash out of the fabrics if you wash the project). Hope this helps! -Michelle
I just love this quilt. I started to learn how to quilt a couple of months ago. I am really enjoying it. I think I will attempt this project for next Christmas. Thank you for this tutorial. 🇨🇦 Friends from Alberta
I have a panel of bird squares I wanted to do in a window frame style, but they are squares, not rectangles. I will just adjust length of the window sill border blocks I can finally do this with the excellent trick for mitered corner! Thank you!
So glad you're going to be able to do that! That sounds like it'll be a gorgeous quilt. Let us know how it turns out! We'd love to hear about it. - Morgan
Funny, but I was just wondering about doing an attic window layout for something else, yesterday. Trying to recall how to do it. I like the no miter method. Thanks. Also, just a side observation: i think both of you girls would look so much prettier in pastel colors like pink or light blue because of your skin tone. Black looks harsh on most people, especially next to the face. I can’t wear it there. Maybe print some tee shirts in those colors for your show, how about? 🌷
Oh Tammy, I have SO many panels and have wanted to do this technique for years. And you have even done the math for us!! But, I have lupus and with it, I’ve got lupiebrain big time. You know, forgetting things, things don’t make sense, you can’t figure it out, etc. (I know most of us in our “beyond the hump” phase are this way, I just get to blame mine on lupus rather than aging!!!🤣😂). Perhaps you could come to Atlanta and help me in person. That way, I MIGHT be able to figure it out. 🙄😉😉
Carol Johnson I do try to do this, often. Fortunately, my new best friend is someone who was in a quilting class with me. We hang out all the time now. She understands what’s happening, and is very patient with me in trying to explain things, etc.....
We so wish we could come help you! Hopefully the video will be a good stand-in! :) Please feel free to ask questions any time, we'll answer them as quickly as possible! - Morgan
Hi Angeline, Thanks for watching. I've included a link to the free pattern below. Hope that helps! -Bethany! Get the free download: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/69/how-to-make-an-easy-attic-window-quilt-using-a-panel?
Hi! You will want to adjust your measurements for your cuts depending on the size of your panel. I suggest dividing the size of your panel by 4 to get the measurements you need to cut the panel up into the 16 pieces needed. So if it is 40" wide by 36" long, then you'll need to cut your pieces 10" wide by 9" long. Hope that helps! - Beth
We're glad you enjoy this fun technique. Unfortunately, we are sold out of this panel, but you can use this same technique on any panel you choose. 💖 -Michelle
We're glad you enjoy this project. One way to get each window to feature what you'd like is to adjust your measurements. Hope that makes sense! 💖 -Michelle
Where were you last year 😂...I had a Santa panel as well and I didn’t know about having to squaring up panel’s until I had finished quilting it ...what major headache 😂🤣 I got it done but had to cut of a bit of the boarder which was a shame . It’s hanging up again this year. I know how to square one up now thanks to you and you made it look easy. Merry Xmas from NZ 😘💐🎄
Hiya many thanks for a BEAUTIFUL video - very clear and easy to follow instructions. I have made an attic window quilt with deer in the background but have a questions. When you purchase a panel, is their a set measurement for cutting up the panel? I wondered if you could explain how you work out what the cutting measurements will be? Many thanks, Linda from England
Glad it was helpful! Your cutting measurements will vary depending on the size of the quilt. You just want to make sure that your window panes are spaced the way you prefer. Our free download is a good starting point: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Assets/Downloads/SantasList_forDownload.pdf - Morgan
I think an easy solution would be to have a scenery photo, and perhaps use tonal browns/greys instead of the yellows. Hope this makes sense! 💖 -Michelle
Hi June! Unfortunately we are sold out of these kits. It was very popular! We do have the pattern available as a free download if you have a panel you'd like to use. I've included the link below! Let us know if you have any questions! Stay safe! ~Leah www.shabbyfabrics.com/Assets/Downloads/SantasList_forDownload.pdf
The pattern provides all of the measurements needed for the cuts of each fabric. That math might vary depending on the selection of fabrics if you are doing this without the kit. - Beth
Tammy what a beautiful window panel. Enjoy this tutorial very much. Also learned that I was using my Creative Grid 2 1/2"x 24 1/2" ruler wrong. Did you make a tutorial on this ruler. I'm a beginner using these rulers they are new too me and I've a brain that isn't great getting things correct. I'm a visual person any help is greatly appreciate. PS Love using the folded ruler cutting the triangles. Please make a tutorial on the what all you can do with these rulers.
We haven't done one on the 2.5" x 24.5" but I'll let our team know you'd like to see that! We have a few that we've done here: ruclips.net/user/ShabbyFabricssearch?query=creative+grids - Morgan
Great question! We did use a snowflake fabric that is no longer available. But we also recommend using any of our wide selection of Christmas fabrics to make it your own! ;) - Beth
We have a link to our website with a free download with more information on this project! www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/69/how-to-make-the-attic-window-quilt-free-pattern Hope this helps and thanks for your comment! - Abby
Hi Janet! You could try that, but since we haven't, we're unable to give you successful advice on it. We look forward to hearing how it goes for you! -Michelle
It's a great idea, but, and please don't be offended by this cause I couldn't do what you did, but the mullions on window aren't a realistic scale therefore making the scene panel parts too far apart. Like the beard, the fingers, etc. The brown and yellow parts of the window panes should only be about the size of the black grid (or smaller for more proper perspective). So basically had you just sewn the mullions together and sewn it on as an overlay, that would have looked more realistic. Look at the window in the panel behind the tree to see what I mean. My background is more construction than sewing. So as much as I love what you've done here and REALLY appreciate the skill and talent this art requires, that's how much the mullions jumped out at me. I usually hear complaints rather than constructive criticism, this isn't a complaint. Thanks for all the great lessons and ideas and a very Merry Christmas!
I have a problem with the transition. There would be parts you couldn't see so I think you would need to cut off what would be behind the window frame. I saw a deer panel and the antlers were wonky and didn't line up because they didn't cut that part off.
I understand what you’re saying as well. It was the first thing I noticed. Oddly enough, I have an architectural and building background as well. Isn’t the use of the light vs. darker fabric clever though?
@@marziahkiehn7004 I think the use of the graduated colored fabric and contrast as well as just the concept was brilliant! I've seen these kinds of big panels before and thought " big deal! Put some batting and a backing on it for what? It's not like you really made a quilt!" But in this case the panel is just one more piece of fabric being cut and sewn in! Not even like my example of a "mullion overlay" but actually built right in. I give a big 👍 on this project! I certainly haven't got the chops to pull this off quilting wise. I'm very impressed with the level of talent and ability.
The brown and gold parts struck me as a bit too thick as well, but i planned to make them thinner on my panel. I do, however, think that for a beginner, the larger pieces might be easier to deal witb for theur first try. They could make adjustments on later projects to their own taste.

I just love this quilt. I started to learn how to quilt a couple of months ago. I am really enjoying it. I think I will attempt this project for next Christmas. Thank you for this tutorial. 🇨🇦 Friends from Alberta
So glad to hear you're enjoying quilting! You're going to love this project. Let us know how it turns out! - Morgan
I have a panel of bird squares I wanted to do in a window frame style, but they are squares, not rectangles. I will just adjust length of the window sill border blocks
I can finally do this with the excellent trick for mitered corner!
The no miter method is so much easier! You're going to love this! We do love to wear other colors sometimes when they match the project! :) - Morgan
Sounds like you have a positive attitude about your condition. Maybe a friend can watch the video with you and help you figure out the steps.
I have chemo brain, although its improved a lot since my chemo in 2017. But, some things are lost forever. So, I blame everything on my chemo brain!
Carol Johnson I do try to do this, often. Fortunately, my new best friend is someone who was in a quilting class with me. We hang out all the time now. She understands what’s happening, and is very patient with me in trying to explain things, etc.....
@@Zippitybippity great idea! Thank you!
We so wish we could come help you! Hopefully the video will be a good stand-in! :) Please feel free to ask questions any time, we'll answer them as quickly as possible! - Morgan
I really liked the way you made that panel quilt; is there instructions someplace that I can get?
Hi Angeline, Thanks for watching. I've included a link to the free pattern below. Hope that helps! -Bethany!

Love this does it make a difference if panel is wider than length? I have a 40” wide by 36 long
- Beth
Tammy, I love your videos! You a.ways offer the best tips and tricks. Thank you.
Thank you so much for watching! We're so glad you enjoy the videos! - Morgan
Thanks. Is possible purchase only panel ?
We don't currently have the panel available on our website. - Morgan
Would love to purchase one the panels....are they still available ? Beautiful job
We're glad you enjoy this fun technique. Unfortunately, we are sold out of this panel, but you can use this same technique on any panel you choose. 💖 -Michelle
I love your tutorials. Keep up the great work
Thank you so much! You're so kind! - Morgan
I really like this panel however I can’t seem to get to where to buy it is it still available
when you cut you should account for the design that would normally not be seen because of the window trim.
Great tip! Thank you for sharing with us! - Yajaira
Love that panel. I have been looking for it on the Web . Who makes that pattern??
this video was done in 19
We do! You can ind it on our Free Downloads Page: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Free-Downloads-W4C258.aspx "Santa's List Quilt" -Michelle
Muchas graciass!!!
¡Gracias por ver! - Morgan
Great video but I noticed that the Teddy Bears right hand paw is too far over in the third block. Is there a way around this?
We're glad you enjoy this project. One way to get each window to feature what you'd like is to adjust your measurements. Hope that makes sense! 💖 -Michelle
Where were you last year 😂...I had a Santa panel as well and I didn’t know about having to squaring up panel’s until I had finished quilting it ...what major headache 😂🤣 I got it done but had to cut of a bit of the boarder which was a shame . It’s hanging up again this year. I know how to square one up now thanks to you and you made it look easy. Merry Xmas from NZ 😘💐🎄
I'm sure your quilt looks great! It's notoriously difficult to square up panels, so we're glad you found this helpful! - Morgan
Do you cut into rows by the width measurement first? Then lay open into rows then cut the length measurement?
If you are following along with the Free Download instructions, then you will cut all of your fabrics first. Hope that helps!
- Beth
Hiya many thanks for a BEAUTIFUL video - very clear and easy to follow instructions. I have made an attic window quilt with deer in the background but have a questions. When you purchase a panel, is their a set measurement for cutting up the panel? I wondered if you could explain how you work out what the cutting measurements will be? Many thanks, Linda from England
Glad it was helpful! Your cutting measurements will vary depending on the size of the quilt. You just want to make sure that your window panes are spaced the way you prefer.
Our free download is a good starting point: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Assets/Downloads/SantasList_forDownload.pdf
- Morgan
Could this be done to make it look like you’re looking out the window not in?
I think an easy solution would be to have a scenery photo, and perhaps use tonal browns/greys instead of the yellows. Hope this makes sense! 💖 -Michelle
Looking forward to making this. Just wondering f you have all measurements for 3 panes vs. 4 window panes? Thank you very much.
Hello Judith! We do not recommend changing how many panes because the picture won't sit right. - Yajaira
Wow! LOVE this.Is the kit still available? I don't see it on your web site.
Hi June! Unfortunately we are sold out of these kits. It was very popular! We do have the pattern available as a free download if you have a panel you'd like to use. I've included the link below! Let us know if you have any questions! Stay safe! ~Leah

I enjoyed your tutorial. Thank you. But I am wondering if I missed something? The pattern didn't tell how much yardage to buy for each fabric?
The pattern provides all of the measurements needed for the cuts of each fabric. That math might vary depending on the selection of fabrics if you are doing this without the kit.
- Beth
Can I still get the Read More for pattern sizing when cutting?
Hi Kim - You can find the Free Download that accompanies this tutorial here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/69 -Michelle
How much fabric will I need of the dark brown for the sashing?

We have a few that we've done here: ruclips.net/user/ShabbyFabricssearch?query=creative+grids

I love the way this turned out. I will be making one when I can get to it. Thank you for the tutorial. :)
Thank you for watching! We're so glad you like it! Let us know how yours turns out when you make it! - Morgan
That iron is nice. What’s the brand?

Beautiful. How did you finish the back of this quilt?
Great question! We did use a snowflake fabric that is no longer available. But we also recommend using any of our wide selection of Christmas fabrics to make it your own! ;)
- Beth
Besides the panel, how much fabric I required?

I wanted to try QAYG with my panel is it possible?
Still a beautiful piece
Is the free download no longer available? I went to the link and did not see it on the website
