Just saw The Zombies a few days ago, here in Cleveland, OH (actually Northfield, OH) and show blistered. Awesome show! Colin B's voice was great and Rod Argent's keyboard playing stole the show. I cannot RECOMMEND ENOUGH to go see this band IF they appear in your area.

For me the signature on an item doesn't matter as much as knowing the artist actually handled the item I have. I got an autograph from Natalie Merchant and you would never know who signed it by looking at it, but she also made a little drawing by it the looked pretty cool. What really drives me crazy is when they come out with these super editions that are $70 and up and then never come out with a more affordable stand alone edition. Craft has done it with Sonny Rollins - Way Out West and I believe Seal did it with one of his albums.

I love signed albums but I'm not going to pay double the price just because it is signed. I don't want a signed album unless the jacket is signed as I don't care for signed inserts as what am I going to do with them as they are nothing special.

I bought the deluxe package of Iggy Pop's album "Every Loser", which included a signed poster. It took forever to get, and Iggy's signature looked like it was signed by a 76 year old man who was tasked with signing a thousand autographs. While waiting for it, I received a video of Iggy apologizing for taking so long, and explaining that it was a daunting task but he was going to get through all the autographs. (A very classy move.) In the end, I couldn't be happier...it's as authentic as it can get, and I own a piece of history.

Yes, the Garth Brooks thing really bothers me. I believe they also implied the box sets were the ONLY way these albums were being released on vinyl. At some point later I saw individual albums from the box sets pop up at retail. Now there are a TON of the boxed sets AND individual albums on clearance for super cheap at a local closeout store. And the frustration doesn't stop, because I'm reminded every time I see this stuff on clearance.

Always a treat to watch your videos, Melinda! I have certainly fallen into the 'repress' chasm - I paid a small fortune for Natalie Merchant's 'Tiger Lily' on MoFi vinyl, only for them to repress it a few months later at a much more reasonable price. On the other side of the scales, I have Dylan's 'No Direction Home' vinyl box set which is now offered on Discogs for hundreds more than I paid for mine. The only autographed album I have is from the Australian blues guitarist, Fiona Boyes, who wrote me a lovely personalised message on a post card as well as signing and numbering the album cover - this was for a mail order purchase. A very charming and talented lady - have a listen to 'Voodoo in the Shadows'. Take care, Melinda and keep up the good work - you are always so interesting!

Good morning! You're correct about represses--often an additional pressing run requires a renegotiation with the label or artist, depending on who owns the masters.
I had an annoying CD purchase conundrum many years ago, when Brian Setzer's first Xmas CD was released. A year later, bonus tracks became available. Buuuuut...each major retailer had a different bonus track! Luckily I found a solution--a Japanese EP for "Luck Be a Lady," which also contained the bonus tracks. It was readily available and I ordered it.
For the first two Steely Dan UHQRs, I can't help but feel, as you say, ripped off. I still don't see $150 in value for what I still feel are two mediocre sounding albums. I have the SACDs for both and they sound identical, for less than 1/4 the cost. I still have Aja on preorder but am considering cancelling. I would have bought these as $60 2-LP 45 RPM sets but there will soon be a couple of UHQRs for sale...somewhere...

In my opinion, it would depend on the reissue. In most of the times I find the original better than a run of the mill reissue. I choose reissues when they have something special to offer (all analogue, 45rpm, bonus tracks, bonus disc(s), half-speed master, or such). Not to mention that new vinyl tend to warp easily and some have loud surface noise. But it's just my opinion. Of course, I also made some mistakes in these 10 years of vinyl collecting, but who hasn't?

I sadly feel this quite often lately. I’ve stopped ordering from artists that use certain merchandise companies, because the records always come with some degree of warping, they’re so poorly packed they come in bent and split, and one can go through all the trouble to replace it to end up with the same issue, or the item gets delayed, delayed again, delayed again. I’m currently waiting for the Third Man Syd Barrett box set, and was notified today when I reached out to see what the delay was, you guessed it: there’s a delay. I don’t know if/when I’m ever going to see it.

I own a handful of autographed CDs by artists/bands. Some are really good and were well worth it, while others were not. My best one, I got in person at a meet and greet after a concert. It was in 2010 on Overkill's Ironbound tour. The Meet and Greet after the show didn't cost anything, but if you wanted to meet them and get their autographs you had to have an Overkill item with you to get signed, whether you bought it at the merch stand or if you brought in something by Overkill yourself. All 5 members were at the table and you could say a few words to each of them and they all had a sharpie to sign things. I chose to have my copy of the Ironbound CD signed by them all. Instead of having all 5 sign the cover, I had each one of them sign their individual photo inside the booklet (I can't remember if there was a band photo too, but I didn't want all 5 signatures crammed on one page covering up any band photo.) 4 of the 5 signatures were very good signatures and only 1 of them was sloppy with poor penmanship. My brother was with me and chose to have the white sleeves of the 3/4 length band shirt he bought at the merch stand.
There are some nice ones I bought over the internet, whether through the artist's website or through another store or radio/podcast show that had a promotion going on with the artist, such as Amazon or a music/bookstore such as Barnes & Noble or Borders. Styx's latest album Crash of The Crown from 2021, I got a CD through a radio/podcast promotion which was signed by all the members. They all signed the front cover and most of the signatures were good signatures. I can come up with more good examples I got not in person, but I won't waste any more time on that since they are all similar stories.
A couple bad ones I felt ripped off though, similar to your Killers CD, in which the signature looked like chicken scratch, wiggly lines, or just sloppy initials. I understand at some of these signings (not in person,) they have to do hundreds of them, if not thousands, depending on the contract they have with the promotion. So, these artists just rush through them as quickly as possible instead of taking the time to neatly sign each and every one one of them.
By the way, I bought the SDE CD/Blu-ray box set of Who's Next | Life House. Personally, I felt it was worth every penny despite the sound/mix of the San Fran discs. The San Fran Discs didn't bother me and, besides, it was the first time that show was released officially (I refuse to pay for bootlegs, so I never had listened/own that concert.) For me, the prize from that box set were Pete's demos, the sessions discs (moreso the Olympic London sessions and Singles Sessions over the Record Plant sessions in New York, but those were a treat too,) and of course Steven Wilson's remixes on the Blu-ray. And if you are into books and memorabilia, there are 2 hardbound books and a few posters, program booklets, and button pins included. One book is the detailed book containing essays, photos, credits, and track-by-track write-ups of each song on each disc. The other book is the graphic novel about the story of Life House. If you are into comics or graphic novels, there is some worth in that book too. I can't comment on the vinyl versions of the original album or San Fran show since I didn't buy those variants; just the CD/Blu-ray Box Set.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  Год назад +1

I believe the box set you bought was the best of the bunch. Definitely the one to get. 😀 Overkill sounds like a cool band. I was able to buy a signed drum head after a Styx concert for a very reasonable price. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️

Hi Melinda, I enjoyed the video as always and I agree with you. That is malarkey. A somewhat similar thing happened to me although I am not sure if the item was a limited edition but maybe it was. About 6 years ago a four Record Set came out on the music of the classic TV Series Lost In Space. I really wanted it but it was around $200 when it came out and way too expensive for me. So I figured I would wait until the price dropped, at the same time I was concerned that I may not be able to buy it in a few months and they would all be gone and I would be out of luck. I looked on Ebay about a year later and I was looking for this 4 record set, and there were some. One seller had it for $99 which I thought was a good price and I was getting ready to buy it, but then I thought let me just scroll the whole page for a minute, and I found one for $60 Brand New and I grabbed it. Take care,

Good points all, Melinda. You don't have to worry about Mofi stuff - they love you! LOL! You ask, they'll tell you the skinny I'm sure! 🙂As for Garth....he's a great artist...but he's not a friend of anyone except himself when it comes to sales. He was one of the originators of the (thankfully) unsuccessful campaign in the 1990s to prevent used sales of CDs because he wasn't getting a cut of it (which he ALREADY got when it sold the first time - he and Metallica are terrible when it comes to this stuff), and he's always been more about the money when ti comes to sales. It wouldn't surprise me to know he knew full well the Legacy sets would be released shortly after the "exclusive" versions...and I don't blame you a bit for feeling totally ripped off. Artists often do that, because...well...they CAN. And it stinks. Here's hoping you have a good week and forget all the nasty stuff you had to talk about today, LOL! Take care!

Through trial and error I discovered many reissues of classic albums on vinyl have been disappointments in terms of sound quality. The best Pink Floyd reissue of Dark Side of the Moon is the 2009 (also Wish You Were Here). The 50th anniversary release collection sounded nice, but the live show is available as a standalone CD and album purchase. The gold standard for reissues is the Jimmy Page curated Led Zeppelin box sets of their discography. As for autograph copies, I have many in my collection, but I secured the autograph myself at a time when I had access to the artist. Those mean more to me than autograph copies sold on secondary market places and artist websites. Just my option. Enjoyed this video segment a lot.

I think signed items mean more when you get it from meeting the person/people. I have a signed Sleaford Mods record and they did a signing at one of my local record stores and one of the conditions of entry was a donation for the local food bank. I asked them to write something humorous in relation to that and they obliged and found it funny themselves. Sadly, the store in question closed down 4 years ago and I got the young couple who ran the store to sign the last record I bought from them. These things mean more to me than a signed record from someone's website or a pre-signed one from a concert merchandise stall (although I do have a few of those - Christopher Cross, Kim Wilde and Sophie Ellis-Bextor).
My copy of Master of Puppets is an original pressing that I freely bought for £80 when there was a perfectly good reissue available in the same store for £30. The opportunity was there and I took it. I have no regrets because it sounds great and IMO it's the best Metallica album.
I waited a long time for George Michael, Older to get a re-issue. When the album was originally released in 1996, vinyl was a very slender market and the LP release came and went very quickly and was price-gouged ever since. I had no intention of paying the £900 people were asking for it; especially since it was only done on 1 LP for a 60 minute album. It finally got a 2 LP release towards the end of last year which I got for £30.
I suppose there will always be an element of risk and reward in relation to collecting. If you don't take the chance, you run the risk of missing out on something rare. If you take the chance, you risk paying over the odds for something less eager people are able to get for a lot cheaper further down the line.

Melinda, great video. Couple of things, I have several signed albums that I got, in most cases, from the artists web site. I have a couple signed Dolly Parton CDs that I have since learned were not hand signed, but rather done with an auto pen. That was quite a disappointment. Regarding those Garth Brooks sets. I got those, jumped in on the first day they were announced, asked for lowest number, got something like #000087, but was confused as to WHY I needed three versions of the same albums? I couldn’t really hear any difference in them. But more importantly, in my opinion, they are missing two key albums, his self titled debut and “Ropin’ The Wind”. I expect these will eventually get a vinyl release and probably with some money grabbing catch. 🤨

I think that for those audiophiles among us who paid for the recent Pretzel Logic UHQR, that release greatly qualifies as perhaps the most 'epic' reissue disappointment in recent memory, given its very high cost and AP's stellar track record overall up 'til then. Re. 'limited edition' records we pay dearly for that are later reissued, I think that in today's vinyl market, that possibility should be assumed for any lp title, unless the master tapes and all master tape copies are publicly given a fiery 'Viking funeral.'

    Another great video, Melinda!
Garth Brooks has purposely put out releases to stir up the FOMO crowd. My mother got caught up in that and bought me a CD copy for Christmas or my birthday. I never really listened to Garth Brooks much at that time. Then, I saw Brooks and other artists doing this over and over. I realized that many "limited" releases were FOMO releases, so I only bought them if I found a discounted price and especially if I actually planned to play them. One of the few FOMO releases which actually panned out was the Beatles' Mono LP box. Multi-record boxed sets are hard to deal with from the manufacturing end all the way to the end consumer. The "Mono Box" seemed like it would be a good investment so I bought 2 and one is still sealed, and it became an actual good investment. I was worried at first because there was a backlog of sets gathering dust on warehouse shelves for years. Then the FOMO crowd woke up and emptied the shelves. There wasn't enough sets left, so prices have gone through the roof. UMe is not interested in re-releasing them, so values still are high for existing sets.
With the Who album "Who's Next" continually, it seems, getting re-released, it's hard to keep up. Myself, I like the original U.S. release on the Decca label the best. But I have the subsequent releases too. When Classic Records decided to release audiophile versions of Who LP's, it took them several times to come up with a version which they were comfortable with releasing. To me, it seems like that album was the pinnacle release before the company began it's downhill slide. From what Dave Bianco said, the Music On Vinyl version was the best, so I bought a copy. It does sound very good, but I don't know if it is really the best.

100 agree with you on the Who's Next release. I had high hopes for this 50th or technically 52nd anniversary release. I loved The Who my entire life and was expecting a premium product for this anniversary. I pre-ordered the half-speed master and was so disappointed. I compared it to my crappy old MCA copy that is notorious for having mediocre sound and it literally sounded exactly the same. The sound staging and levels were so similar that it actually upset me. I returned the half-speed master for a refund and just kept my MCA copy. That is a shame. Why couldn't they have done a 45 RPM double disc release of it?

14:27 I agree Melinda about Who's Next. I have an OG Decca US pressing that sounds really good. This is well engineered album by Glynn Johns; one of the best in history. I think the issue is the label just wants to get the product out there and they likely don't even source the master tapes which Pete Townshend personally owns. Those tapes in his vault. Unless he fully participated and was at least getting paid for the effort, the label probably used tape copies or produced and sent a DSD or better yet, PCM digital file to be cut. So if I saw "moderated by Pete Townshend" on a hype sticker I would have thought, this could be the new reference version- not the case.

It was quite difficult to get one only to see it reissued a couple of months after at a laughable price all over the world. I often feel i get "ripped off" more because of the sound qualities than for the price specially when you're really waiting for that reissue only to find out it sounds dull compared to other versions. By the way, if you're looking for an amazing sounding pressing of Dark Side of The Moon, try the 1988 US capitol pressing with purple center label (Specialty pressing SMAS 11163). To be fair, life can be short, and even titles that are expected to be reissued can take two, three, five or more years before they're reissued; and some get cancelled along the way and are left in limbo, so for example, recently I paid dearly for a mint (Classic) copy of Led Zeppelin III, and then with the Atlantic 75 announcement, I understood that Zeppelin might end up being reissued under it at some point- but people have been talking about Chad Kassem getting a Zeppelin deal for a no. of years now, and even an eventual reissue is not guaranteed not to disappoint.
So I'll enjoy my copy of the album now, and just live with it and not fret if a cheaper copy comes along.

50th anniversary of Dark Side of the Moon. One of my favorite all time albums. I have to admit the concept of that box set is cool. There are boxes inside of boxes inside that massive box set which by the way doesn’t even fit in my shelf.

Your point about re-re-pressing (lol) and not knowing whether a manufacturer will release another wave of product, is one of the most annoying aspects of vinyl record collecting for me. Personally, I'm not concerned with original pressings or obscure bootlegs - for viny records, I'm in it for the amazing sound quality and the aesthetics of the packaging. Because of that, I just want a high quality release of an album - I don't care which pressing it is. So, when I want an album and if there's stock remaining from the last pressing, I will happily pay the $20-50 (sometimes more obviously, depending on the release) - but if the last pressing is sold out, the cost can quickly sky rocket to $100-$300+ in the after market. Not knowing when or if a label will be repressing an album at some point in the future is definitely the most obnoxious part of the hobby - because it's as you said, we don't know, so rather than wait for the price to continue to rise, we'll end up paying $100-200 for a record, just to see it re-released a couple years later and sold for $40.

    • @MelindaMurphy

As I've written in your channel more than once, I would never dream to spend silly amount of money for 1 record with maybe 40-45 minutes of music and coming in a fancy package, booklets and photos and exclusivity, limited copies and the usual marketing nonsense only to find it later on at the big box store at a fraction of the price. MoFi records are typically never truly permanently discontinued; they’re simply between pressing batches. If their licensing deal ends for a particular title and it is actually OOP forever, then the status will say “discontinued” and not “out of stock” or “backordered” on Music Direct’s website.
Also, practically all of my signed LPs and CDs are just a squiggle of the artist@/ initials or first name only, rather than their full name completely written out. I have a signed Kesha album that’s basically just an oval and a line. It’s completely impossible to distinguish any letters in it. But my thing is, just knowing that the artist themselves held and marked the album is enough for me. I don’t really care what the signature looks like per se.

Oh Melinda you are not alone! Happens in the UK it's a sales ploy! Hey this sold out quickly let's repress it! But buying second hand vinyls is a minefield! I buy some vinyls direct from the artist here! As they wait months for pressings to be manufactured in the Czech Republic I know repressings are very unlikely! Great video! You just have to be careful! If an item is limited my idea of limited is different from a pressing plant's idea of limited! I buy Stranglers and Ian Mcnabb Ltd vinyl from both! Ian always autographs his albums! Maybe the way to go!!

I too am still mad about the Garth Brooks box set. I currently have 1 left in my collection. I did a giveaway for one box on my old channel, and the other I gifted as VCLT. After this fiasco it really did leave a bad taste in my mouth especially around FOMO. I know alot of times, I don't necessarily have to get in on the first wave as there will inevitably be a 2nd, 3rd...and so on down the line.
I wanted to let you know that Wynonna has finally reissued her first 2 solo albums. I'm glad I held out, I know my pocketbook thanks me!

    • @MelindaMurphy

The Garth set is beyond ridiculous. I'm surprised he hasn't released the rest of his catalog. 🤔 I would definitely not jump in line to overpay for those. Smh
The Winona releases are great news. I found a copy of her debut album a few years back for a very cheap price. When I brought it up to the counter, the store owner told me I benefited from the record sitting in the bin for a long time. If he knew it was there, he would have raised the price. It's such a great record and I played my old CD to death back in the day. Thank you and Happy Halloween. 🎃

Hello Melinda! I’m a big fan and believer of the waiting game. Several albums I want have a price tag way over my ability , for a used copy. With a little patience , so far I’ve got hold of remastered reissues of :
    Pink Floyd-Pulse
    Montrose-S/T
    The Sonics-Here are The Sonics
    Alice in chains-Facelift & Dirt
    Audioslave-S/T
    Serge Gainsbourg-Histoire de Melody Nelson
I have 15+ more I’m currently waiting for to get a vinyl reissue. Some will be first-time-on-vinyl , from the Cd-only era , mid 90’s to early 00’s. I can wait.
Take care. /R (A at work).

Great video! I have some heartburn over those Garth boxes because I preordered a very limited Reissue of The Beautiful Letdown by Swirchfoot that never ended up happening because other things got priority pressed.
The Adele record I am pretty sure played a part in a year long debacle for a reissue of one of my grails that I don’t even listen to that much now because it’s soured me on it. I still got the record and heck even the original which was a record store day only record for a reissue so now I have two copies 😂.
As for the autographs. I got over the pandemic a copy of William DuVall’s first solo record and he offered a signed copy via his webstore. It’s wonderful to pull that out and listen to it because he took care to sign it. I was able to snag one of the folklore signed CDs Taylor Swift signed and it’s nice too.
I have two signed insert releases that I got and I think one of them is potentially just printed instead of actually signed, but it could be the nice paper they used for the insert.

Great video Melinda. As for the latest Who’s Next pressing. What really bothered me was that they put out a Half Speed master and a standard speed master simultaneously. The pressing I got was the Limited Edition record store exclusive coke bottle green press. I was So disappointed in the sound quality. It’s Okay but definitely Should sound a hell of a lot better. It doesn’t sound any better than my old crappy MCA pressing. And I heard the Half Speed Master (which is digital) doesn’t sound any better either. This was a Very strange issue of an Iconic Rock album! Anyway that’s my beef, lol. Have a great day
    Tom

I agree! The 50th anniversary edition should be the best version we have ever heard. Why make a mediocre version of such a great album. I ended up passing on everything. So frustrating . 😒 Thank you and take care.

Hello my friend! I DO hear you re: McCartney III, but for a die hard Paul fan, it was one of the highlights during the pandemic. Collecting every colour copy (which I did save for the TMR version made from recycled McCartney I and II records - which I am still looking for) was one of the joys during a very frustrating time. Agreed re: Adele...we did NOT need that many copies. :) I have yet to open my big Who's Next box and the live set and if it is better than the stuff I have heard online I will let you know. The Classic Records pressing of WN is one of my faves, as well as my early Track Records UK pressing. Best ones out there.

What annoys me is that the 50th anniversary version of Who's Next should be the definitive copy. Why put a mediocre version out there at such an amazing milestone? We deserve better in my opinion. Thank you and take care. 😃

I was just at a record store today and picked up the Beatles "red " compilation. Its the 2014 EU version that's suppose to sound really good. Anyway speaking of big dollar items that could get a reissue, 2 things I saw today I wanted but not at the prices for originals....and the originals are not really that old, but they are limited...KISS Symphony, they wanted $300 and Beatles Let It Be...Naked, they wanted $225. I would like to see these reissued but I'm sure the folks who have them don't want them to be reissued. Great video and take care!

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  Год назад +1

I have both of those records but I do think they should get a reissue. I thought for sure that Let It Be Naked would be included in the Let It Be box set. I think at some point, Kiss will reissue Symphony. It's not like them to leave any money on the table and the fans definitely want it. 😀
That version of The Beatles compilation does sound great. ♥️ I hope you're enjoying it. Thank you and take care.
