    **For Melinda Murphy, Bon Voyage**
In the bluegrass heart of Kentucky’s land,
Where vinyl’s warmth met Melinda’s hand,
She shared with the world each pressing, each groove,
Where music’s essence began to move.
Her voice, a guide through the analog sea,
Unveiling the magic for you and me,
From the crackle of vintage to the clarity new,
Her passion and wisdom always rang true.
    With each review, emotions unfurled,
    Songs became stories, deeply twirled,
    In Melinda’s realm, music’s breath,
Touched the soul, beyond life’s breadth.
Now she embarks on a sunlit quest,
To Florida’s shores, where waves caress,
With her husband by her side, hand in hand,
In a new chapter, a fresh, bright land.
May the records spin with joyanew,
In the balmy air and skies of blue,
And every melody they play and hear,
Bring happiness, peace, and endless cheer.
For Melinda, the muse of vinyl’s song,
May Florida’s warmth carry you along,
In your journey of sound, both old and new,
We wish you joy in all you pursue.
    Chuck Ferguson
    Vancouver, Canada

You are so welcome! You and your channel have touched many people. I was originally going to say that these were the last words of Eddy van Halen, dedicated to you, but you know how it is, there’s a time and a place for everything. I also thought maybe to add some humour (Melinda buys so many records! What’s her favourite song? “Broke on the Water”)
There are so many more amazing things about you that I could have written, such as your great memory about your purchases, and the great work ethic you have when looking through used record shops. Anyway I’m glad you like it, I was really hoping you would.

i have more than 15.000 LP records and the early albums i have are from late 60´s , most of the remasterized versions in vinyl today sound a lot worst than the original ones , i don´t know if it were first editions has i used to travel to london where my sister still lives and my younger brother but he changed to scotland main city not the capital but the other most known ,and being there 4 to 5 times a year also in germany and netherlands where i had family, i used to go first to muisc stores ,in my country portugal there was a dictatorship that didn´t allowed subversive bands like the beatles after 66 , this story of remasterizing isn´t a faithfull copy of the original production but a perverted form of the original music and records at the time had great sound and better than the ones sold today, the Beatles as an example had all their records in mono and they sound better than the converted to stereo ,except Abbey Road that was released in Stereo , i bought both red and blue doble Lp´s for having in stereo some beatles songs and i can add that when released for the first time in CD there are more songs than the ones in the record ,that i remenber having to buy the let it be single that had 4 songs and the ballad of john and yoko also don´t let me down wasn´t in the doble Lp´s, but added in the cds that i remenber them saying that they would want the cd version top be released as a doble cd to match the original doble Lp´s . I bought them in december of 75 because they weren´t yet released in portugal and i went to sevilla in Spain to buy them ,allthough there was a revolution that made my country become a democracy ,real one many hundreds of records weren´t available yet in Portugal, i remenber a guy that works in a radio station saying he was a kid when back in black from AC/DC came out but at the EMI store, he saw several Lp´s from AC/DC in the window to the street and thinking they had been released all in that year but no ,just the first time AC/DC LP´s were sold in Portugal and i remenber that happening a lot with most of the bands in the EMI store in Lisbon, you would have three floors with all Lp´s in music being separated by the name of the band and you could buy whatever Lp you wanted from your favorite band, sorry for having drifted from the main matter but with age that as happened a lot of times. I want only to refer one LP that the lead singer said that the new rematerized version of their first Lp was how he wanted to be not the one released first but he might be with the brain destroyd because of the excess of drugs consumed that i did too but acid only two times a year not every weelend or week days, i´m refering to Aqualung from jethro Tull that if it as been released like the modern version they would be a forgoten band as the first release was well produced and had a caractheristic that made me even more interested in the band that when he sings with a guitar the sound is low and when all the band joins the sound become louder this to make people listen to it at a high volume ,i bought some Lp´s from them after and none had the quality of the first, if it was a error people would not have bought the record that sounds amazing and he wouldn´t lived his life as a rock star ,so new editions are far from original quality and people say they liked it because they never listened to the original edition with a good system ,most of them were yet to be born, but you´re true we all seek for a better sounding version i never thought of the editions, my older records are still like new only some that i used to hear more often have the covers cutted on the sides but the record sound is perfect ,i never let a record of mine leave home after having two doble Lp´s and a singular one destroyd because a friend of mine asked for them, and i only did it because he had just bought a new system from pioneer this in 1971 than in decembery of 72 i travel with my family to Africa where i lived and worked only till August of 75 because the country started a civil war,i´m refering to Luanda, Angola, sorry for the extra content

One of the things that make your videos so great to watch is how honest and real you are and your passion for music is plain to see. I never got rid of my vinyl when CD came along as I didn't like how it sounded and as a result I have records that I bought as a teenager back in the 70s. They are far too precious to me to ever consider letting them go even if I own better sounding copies. Some of my records are literally the sound track to those years. I must confess though that unless a record is damaged in some way I rarely buy another copy, due to financial constraints mainly and lack of storage space too. All the very best with your house move.

I was born in the 90s, grew up in the 2000s. I have a similar background, we couldn’t afford for me to have vinyl and CDs. As an adult I like to collect a lot and get things from my childhood, I think it’s me subconsciously collecting my upbringing through music. I also collect the music I would listen to in secret because as a child I thought it was ‘weird’… it’s amazing what memories and feelings a record from the past can bring back! Never feel guilty for buying things that bring you joy :)

Growing up in the 80s with Walkmans it was initially all cassettes for me. The first CD I ever heard was INXS The Swing. A friend of my Dad had bought a very expensive stereo, and invited us around to show it off. How clear the start of Burn For You sounded just blew my mind. It took me until 1989 to get a CD player myself, and my first CD was Brothers in Arms to replace a well worn cassette. After that, everything new was CDs. When I started working full time in the mid 90s I went back in time and purchased CD versions of all my old favourite cassettes like Pyromania, Hysteria, Kick, 5150, Momentary Lapse, Slippery when wet etc.
Nowdays (well, for about the last 20 years now) I can’t resist stopping at a garage sale and discovering an obscure CD album of something I remember from the 80s, but never bought back then. There’s lots of unique Aussie artists who never made it big, but were popular enough locally, and finding their old CDs transports you back in time - bringing up long forgotten feelings and memories, and I love it.
I don’t collect vinyl, and I buy CDs to listen to (and rip to mp3 and iTunes for the car) but I completely understand collecting, along with duplicates and triplicates. I’m guilty of the same thing with other hobbies, and to a small extent, with music. With CDs though, my duplicates are usually a different market CD with a few unique tracks, or an anniversary edition with a bonus of some sort. Pink Floyd, Def Leppard and even Bon Jovi have done some anniversary or remix editions that I really like, but every now and then I like to listen to the original mix. Reading these comments shows how much joy music brings to everyone.

I loved this video for many reasons. The first, OMG, I was laughing my fool head off at the story of your friends making out when they heard your voice on the radio - hilarious!!!!!
My story is, I had a modest collection of vinyl which I started collecting in the late 60’s. Then CD’s came out and I lost my mind - no more snap, crackle, pop’s!!!! I got on a mission to replace every album I owned with the CD version. Then I started going to record shows and sharing a table with a friend and was selling the vinyl I had replaced. Sold half of my collection until, one day I did an A/B comparison - vinyl versus CD. WOW - what a revelation!!!!! It wasn’t just a subtle difference that you could kinda hear, it was a mind blowing difference. No contest what so ever, the vinyl won hands down. Then I was furious with myself for selling all my Yardbirds, Kinks, etc. records.
While buying CDs, there were titles that I have bought 3, 4, even 5 versions of, always hoping for one that sounded better than the vinyl. Still has not happened yet. So, I’m buying vinyl again. Some of them from your influence. 😁. So, you are not the only one buying multiple copies of the same record!
    Love your videos!

Hey Melinda, vinyl collections to me are similar to stock/investment portfolios. The extra higher quality copies you purchase will hold their value or increase in their value imho. I feel safer sometimes investing in vinyl because even if vinyl sales decline, the value will be there for the most part. And the most important to me is that you have something that you can have fun with and enjoy! Its harder when you have investment portfolios at times due to the fact you always are checking on them and you stress out when you see them lose their value. Explain to Philip that these are your new investment portfolios, once he thinks about it, he'll realize that this will succeed for the future. So in essence, get originals and get a top quality copy or two for investment purposes also!Love your videos and good luck on your upcoming move!❤❤

Hi Melinda, very interesting video, really enjoyed it. A few points come to mind. First, I totally get where you are coming from with the whole original versus superior reissue thing. There are some records I want an original of, others I am happy with a reissue, and there’s no rhyme or reason to it half the time, it’s just a gut feeling. Second, record collecting is supposed to be fun, and to my mind having strict rules such as only allowing yourself one copy of an album kind of kills the fun. If two copies of the same record make you happy for different reasons, and it makes you sad to let one go, keep both! Third, I think the important thing is that we each collect mindfully and critically, so that our collecting does not become hoarding. We must be able to explain to ourselves why a particular record is in our collection and, if we cannot, be prepared to let it go. There, that’s my two pennies’ worth! Good luck with the move, greetings from London

Hi Melinda, you really are not alone in this. I have quite a few albums in my collection that I have 2 or more versions of. I have all the Beatles UK albums on vinyl and CD and a couple of them I even own on picture discs. Another favourite album I own 2 pressings of is Fleetwood Mac's Tango In The Night. I have an original 1987 pressing on black vinyl and a really cool reissue version on a bottle green coloured vinyl. I saw it in my local hmv store and I knew I already have the original pressing of it in my collection but after finding this really cool green pressing of the album I just couldn't pass it up. I enjoyed hearing the piece about your fond memories of the Kick album btw. INXS is one of my favourite bands too and I love that album. I have all their albums on CD right from the first one they released in 1980. IMO the early albums are quite good but it wasn't until about 1985 that they became big here in the UK. Listen Like Thieves was their first big hit album here which I think was the 5th album release by the band if I remember correctly. Take care Melinda.

I started my record collection back in the 60’s. Fortunately, they were always taken care, and never stored where they might be damaged. I hold the exact same feelings as yourself when it comes to purchasing new issues, and yet holding onto the original release albums due to sentimental value. I completely understand what you have stated here in this video. Yes, I too have multiple copies of albums from specific artists, and should streamline them out of my collection. But it is very, very hard to do. I’m with you 100% on all you stated in this video! Thank you so much for sharing! 👏😁💯

Because of space restrictions I only allow one copy since my Want List is huge and I'd rather get something from the list than something I already have but these new reissues exceed in sound quality over the OG - new technology better quality vinyl - I noticed that Van Halen's reissues are slightly remixed to sound wider, fuller, deeper and brighter than the OG's so in that case I do sell the OG 'cause I won't listen to it anymore - Melinda you're facing the same issues but you don't have space restrictions so enjoy the memories and the improved sonic fidelity of the new reissues - Great video Melinda❤Have a safe move!

You have described me to a T, so you're not alone in your "madness". I had to laugh at your story of receiving records in the mail. It's the exact same scenario with my wife and I. She likes to see me squirm as I answer the questions that she already knows. I've discovered that women are really good at this. I also keep multiple copies of records that I like. Much of my collection was from the 80s, so I have a lot of OG pressings. But it seems like I'm always looking for a better sounding copy of the records that I love. Nothing wrong with that. Don't ever give the other copies up. You'll only regret it. Only true collectors can understand the madness. Toto IV is also one of my favorites and I have several copies. I have the OG pressing but the Speakers Corner pressing is my favorite so far. I also have multiples of the Alan Parson's Project. Great album! BTW the Men at Work - Business as Usual is another of my favorites and the MFSL pressing sounds amazing. The track "Down by the Sea" always blows me away. Yikes! Keep on collecting and telling your stories. I enjoy your channel.

I love spending part of my afternoon watching a new Melinda video... and then some Mazzy as a chaser! I have no problem picking a favorite disc (LP or CD) & saying farewell to the others, although I'll always keep some (not all) records from high school days. OK, I did replace a US copy of Focus' *Hamburger Concerto* ( a crazy, fun album!) with a quieter Dutch pressing 25 years ago. Later I regretted it because the Atco LP had a different guitar solo on one song. I finally bought a used Atco copy 2 years ago... I still haven't played it!

Hey Melinda. Great video. I can totally relate to you. I love my originals but still buy copies that might sound better. Look at AP's Atlantic 75 series or Mobile Fidelity and so many more. I think most people out there that are buying these already have a copy of the record they are purchasing. I even had the crazy idea of buying Donald Fagen's Nightfly from every country in the world. But after the tenth copy, I came to my senses and put the brakes on that. So don't feel bad. I think a lot of us vinyl junkies are going through the same thing. It's all part of the audiophile vinyl experience

Ah Melinda, this video is a great example of why you were such an early inspiration to me starting a channel and why you will always be the Queen of the VC. You totally get why people collect records. Sound and a lot of sentimental reasons. I bought the 45 rpm of Whitesnake Slide It In because it sounds awesome. But I also have three separate copies of Olivia Newton John’s “Physical “. One old, one still sealed, and one picture disc. Does any man in his late 50’s really need that? Probably not, but I do. Just sentimental value is all. Hope you don’t have problems moving the stereo equipment or record collection. You’re a joy to watch. Have a great week! Cheers!

OMG. I’m everything you said. I am sitting here waiting for the Mailman to bring a Beatles 2012 vinyl stereo box that I really don’t need. Have so many OG Beatles, Mono Box, BC 13 and so on. I could not resist because the Black Box is going to look awesome beside the Mono Box. Really don’t like digital but these are the good pressings from Germany. Will probably never play them. Wanted the book really bad because it is killer.
Anyway, keep your OG’s no matter what. You are so right they will never be made again. I know you may never play them but there is a great feeling just to know they are in your collection and you can look anytime and remember. Thanks for the great video. See you in your new place, Melinda.

Really good talk today. You bring up topics that most collectors struggle with at times. I like having originals and I do buy multiple copies of certain records if there is maybe a different cover, tracks added...or just reissues. I have decent equipment but I don't have a ton of Audiophile pressings so they may not give their full potential on my system. That said I do enjoy great sound quality but that is not really my main motivation as a collector. I have had many occasions upgrading copies of records and then I end up keeping the other copy anyway. I'm a sucker for nostalgia too! Great video and take care!

Hi Melinda. To be totally honest as I always am, I am like you. Sound Quality means the most to me about a record, but yes Sentimental value also. There are a few artists that I do have double copies of the same album, One is a original I bought when I was a teenager and the other one is a Mint Copy that was probably sealed that I bought on Ebay or Discogs. So, I understand totally what your saying and I totally agree with purging your vinyl collection, (or try to) every year or so. I do have about 90% of the records I owned since I was a small boy in the late 60's, and will never get rid of them. And I still have almost all of my Mom and Dad's record collection as well which was from the 50's and 60's Take care

About 3 years ago I sold my whole collection except 3 albums it was about 650 records and I got a really good price for them but the 3 albums I kept one is worth pretty decent amount of money and one is very sentimental to me and the other one is very sentimental to me and my husband and I’m good with that. I get this. I recently bought a great-sounding remaster of The Dreaming by Kate Bush, which is probably my favorite record of all time. But the original I bought (used) back in the 90s was such a huge deal for me and it's been with me through so much. I love having both. But sentimentality aside, there might be other reasons to have two. For instance, I think about the Breeders Last Splash 33 rpm vs the 45 rpm remaster. Sometimes, I want a more dedicated listening experience so I'll put on the 45 rpm. Other times, I am listening while cooking or cleaning and the 33rpm is the better choice because it's more for background ambiance and I don't need to flip as often. Sorry if this post is an enabling one! Haha! Thanks for your content. Good luck with the big move.

Another great video, Melinda, it really hits home!
Spouses can be a roadblock when they don't share our same passions. With 1,ooo's of records and CD's already in my collection, when a new package arrives, my wife asks, 'another record'? 'Why don't you sell some of your records'? 'You have too many already'. My answer, "If I didn't want these records, I wouldn't have bought them in the first place. If I sell a record, then I am going to have to buy it back". I have been going through my records and sorting out the duplicates to maybe sell, keeping the best copies. lol
When I buy records now, they are 99.9% vinyl. In the past, I might buy records made out of styrene or shellac. Neither type ship very well. I remember getting styrene 45's at the radio station and they would often be cracked. Then there were the eBay sellers I would buy shellac 78's from. Most eBay sellers are "flippers" and most have no Idea how to properly package old 78's for shipping. One seller sent me an Elvis 78 in a Fedex envelope made for sending letters. Well, ofcourse, it arrived in a million pieces. For my own metal health, I stopped buying 78's by mail.
I tend to buy the re-issues if there is something special about them, like being audiophile and/or 45rpm. It's mostly out of curiosity. Many times, it's hard to beat the OG. Then there are the re-issues of the re-issues. When Analogue Productions re-presses an audiophile from Classic Records, using the Classic Record's original stampers, the new re-presses won't be better. But, I am curious to compare my Classic Records 45rpm "OG" versions to the re-presses by Analogue Productions. They are close, and I prefer the new 180g versions of the former CR 200g one-sided versions. QC was much easier when they only had to deal with one-sided records. Sometimes the re-presses are done at RTI because RTI retained the stampers. This is a good thing.

    Aloha Melinda
    Another great topic.
Everyone collects for a different reason.
Some collect OG's, others collect for sound quality . & like yourself, you collect both .
When I was in high school, I bought myself a Technics turntable and Amplifier, & purchased a Shure V-15 Type lll cartridge, which in 1974 cost me $125.00 for the Cartridge and stylus. The sad part about it was my speakers were cheap, Sony bookshelf speakers which might have come from someone's stereo system. So the sound wasn't great. Prior to this , I had a cheap Panasonic stereo with round speakers. I started buying & collecting. Mostly used records, which was cheaper to buy , very fortunate I was able to buy white label promos that never been played. From a store that sold records on consignment.
So yes, I myself enjoy collecting Older versions, but I have purchased a few Reissues, .
My stereo equipment isn't high quality like yours, where at this time I can't enjoy the sound & ambiance. (Also no space). But if I had the extra money & space I Definitely would collect both to the fullest.
    Thanks again Melinda.
Looking forward to watching your next videos.

I really appreciate this topic and would like to hear more in the future-maybe reading out what some of your viewers and how (and why) they collect. I recently came across a news article talking about “Swedish Death Cleaning.” Basically, the Swedish do a deep clean in the spring and they try to get rid of all the things that they know that their family won’t want after they pass on. It sounds morbid, but I tried it and realized how emotionally attached I am to some of the items I own. There is a lot of sentimentality and nostalgia wrapped into why I collect things. Sometimes I just buy something to “hear” the difference (all the newer Beatles CDs for example-even though I have the original CDs). Or how I owned Star Wars on VCR, DVD, Blu-ray, and now 4K. For those items that I collect, I look to find a better quality. But there are other things that I collect because of more sentimental reasons. Great topic (again, I’d love to hear more about this in the future as there’s the reality of only having so much space to keep items in our collections!). BTW: I love INXS’ Kick. I have such great memories of my teenage years and on hearing those songs!

Hi Melinda. I am a tech guy so I tend to buy the best sound quality that I can find on vinyl, without going overboard. I have several One-Steps and UHQRs and when one of those arrives, I place the OG down in the basement in storage knowing that I will stick with the newer version. I have quite a few duplicates, not as many as you, but I do have some. Heck I just bought INXS Kick when it was reissued about 6 months ago on 33rpm and just bought the 45rpm, despite saying to myself that the 33rpm will suffice. A good portion of my collection is about the collecting of it, and not necessarily listening to my recent purchases other than 2 or 3 times! I tell myself I have it on hand when I have a hankering to listen to it 😀

I’m definitely a vinyl hoarder and have multiple copies of several albums. The fact that I received the majority of my vinyl from my mom a few years ago and got me back into vinyl, I can’t get rid of them. The vinyl from the 70’s and earlier is some that I remember from my childhood. My vinyl collecting is mostly collectors edition of vinyl like colored vinyl. KISS is my favorite and have multiple copies of the same album, just special editions releases. I had told you about wanting the alternate cover edition of Creatures of the Night and just got it a couple of weeks ago and also found a version with the S’s that are used for German releases. VH is also one of my other favorites and I have got the Dave album vinyl and Sammy vinyl box sets along with the Right here right now and For Unlawfull Carnial Knowledge that was released last week. I love both vintage and new releases also and have been reluctant on replacing my older stereo equipment, but finally broke down and decided to get a new receiver and speakers but still keeping my old turntable. For me the most extreme case of vinyl collecting that I have heard of is on the KISS US vinyl release RUclips channel that I recently started watching. WOW, I didn’t know that there’s so many variations of labels and album covers. Don’t think I will try to get all of those, but fun to see all of them. No matter how or what we collect, the main thing is if it brings us joy, then it is good and worth sharing in the community of vinyl collectors.

Love this video! I take a much different approach, but I really enjoy hearing other folks' takes on this hobby and how they build their own collection/library/whatever you want to call it. 😁
Personally I refuse to own duplicates of anything as a general rule. My records aren't a "collection," so much as they're a listening library. For any title I have, I just want an original pressing to play. I want a copy that's as close as possible to what the average US consumer could have bought in a record store on release day. That's not to say I don't have reissues, certainly I do...I have many...but that's my preference. For myself, I don't care if an original doesn't sound as good as some later reissue. I'll take the original just because it's the historically accurate version of the recording. It's the one the artist heard, the one people got excited about, the one critics judged...you get the point.
I have allowed myself exactly 5 exceptions to the no duplicates rule in 33 years of buying records:
    1. The Police - Reggatta de Blanc: I have my dad's original 12" version but I also purchased the double 10" version that was complete with the poster. Once I got that double 10", I decided I was going to keep the 12" since it was my dad's and it's the copy I've literally been listening to my whole life.
    2. Blind Faith - S/T: I have originals of both covers (the topless girl and the band photo) because the girl cover is one of the more controversial covers ever in rock so I felt like having both is important historically.
    3. Thomas Dolby - The Golden Age of Wireless: Two versions of the albums were released a year apart. The first version had a different cover and didn't have She Blinded Me With Science. A year later, they changed the cover, added She Blinded Me With Science, took some other tracks away, shuffled the running order, etc. The two versions play like two different albums.
    4. R.E.M. - Radio Free Europe 7" Single: I have the original Hib-Tone Records single and the version released by IRS Records a year later once they signed the band. The singles are two completely different recordings and for an R.E.M. nut like myself, both are essential.
    5. Black Sabbath's Tony Martin Albums: I have originals all five albums he was on but I bought the recent Anno Domini box set that has those albums in it. I bought the box because I wanted the book and I also wanted the remix of the Forbidden album which sounds completely different than the original mix from 1995.

I have duplications of some albums but only because I feel that I have purchased a better sounding copy of an album ie Blue Note over a lesser known label. Also I have a fairly large collection of CD’s (70+ of Miles Davis) and I’m trying to purchase Vinyl replacements . So I guess I do accept duplications. Good luck with the move. I am old enough to have a good number of OG vinyl albums (1968 onwards) which hold significant sentimental value for a number of reasons. I wouldn’t consider getting rid of any of these. However, I would not buy an OG replacement for most of these as the sentimental value lies in the copy I have. I have recently started buying selected new versions of some of these as a treat to myself - I have a list of 8 Atlantic 75 45 rpm series and some Rhinos for example. I don’t have racks of albums- my listening room is my living room and after over 40 years I still like to avoid upsetting my wife. I also don’t have lots of fans sending me copies of vinyl. I would therefore say keep your real sentimental OG stuff, your audiophile versions and fan presents - they may look similar but they each have a different purpose.

Melinda, thanks again for another fine video. You’re a collector, and that defines your willingness to own multiple copies. I think many of us envy how fully you’ve embraced your relationship to the music that you love.
I have a specific question, and I want also to tell you how much it means that you are available as a resource. You are the go-to gal for us vinyl lovers. Specifically, I enjoy the MoFi version of the Cars debut album, and I wonder if you can compare it to the slightly more recent Rhino edition? If the Rhino pressing sounds better I would really like to know.

Great video as always Ms. Murphy! 'Kick' is amazing!
But do you know Lissie, the American singer/songwriter. Love her to death.... but just got her 'When I'm Alone' stripped-back piano version. Awesome!!!!! You MUST listen to it.
It has a cover of FM's 'Dreams'. My favourite song. To try and better Stevie Nicks' version seemed like sacrilege. But to be fair, it is equal to the original.
(I read a comment about Alison Krauss's singing. "if the angels in heaven don't sound like her then I don't want to go!")

      @@MelindaMurphy Hi Melinda.
I really, really want to know your opinion of ‘Lissie’. I realise that this isn’t strictly what you do, but for me she is getting awfully close to Alison Krauss.
As I said she covered ‘DREAMS’. You mentioned about sentimental attachment can sometimes over-ride quality issues. Well ‘DREAMS’ is a great example of that. The song makes me recall a very emotional, and painful, time of my life. However, I love it, but enjoying it freely is tough.
However, Lissie’s cover is awesome and allows me to enjoy the song freely, and unhindered by emotional pain.
To be honest, ALL her songs on ‘When I’m Alone’ album are spine tingling.

I did the audiophile thing but it stopped being fun. I realized we all hear differently, great sound is good enough, and fun is more important. Now I built a simple vintage setup that I love and it sounds amazing. A majority of my collection is orig pressings. It’s the nostalgia for me and usually they sound good. I do own newer presses and mofi’s too. I grew up in the 90’s cd era but started collecting vinyl in my teens. Probably due to my music loving family making record store trips routine growing up. I’ve been a fan of INXS since 1988 when I discovered Kick and would listen to the cassette on my sony walkman walking to school. I saw them 3 times in concert. I have all of their studio albums on vinyl. I have multiple versions of many of the albums. When this version of KICK was released, I hesitated specifically because it was 45RPM. My TT has a periphery ring which makes it more laborious to play 45RPM versions of albums. I finally pulled the trigger last night on this album because I saw a review on RUclips from someone who’s opinion I respect that said that this version reduces the sibilance and has a much better balance with the bass and low end. This is a seminal and amazing album and I’m willing to try a new version if it can truly bring out the best qualities of the music. There is definitely something to be said for being cautious of re-releases. We can all admit that sometimes it’s just a money grab. As far as keeping your OG version: I would say that more often than not, older vinyl certainly has an advantage because it was pressed at a time when vinyl was the standard and there was more knowledge of the art of pressing vinyl albums. It is also more likely with these early releases that they are pressed from the original master, or closer to it. In addition, there is something special as a fan about having an original release. Anyway, your video spoke to me as someone who is a huge fan of INXS and someone who hesitated to purchase this album, but ultimately decided to get it and also keep my previous versions. I could not be more in agreement.

I'm mainly a "I like this music" collector. For most records I have, there is one vinyl version. If there are multiple versions, it is usually for different art work. Say, The Mob "Let the tribe increase" OG album, then gatefold, plus re-issue with bonus tracks and booklet. Or Sally Dige "Holding On" first the standard printed cover, then the silkscreen handprinted version. Or Sonic Youth "Daydream Nation" the OG double LP, and then the 4x box set with booklet and additional live tracks. I recently found X-mal Deutschland "Devils" on vinyl, but am keeping the CD as both are pretty rare. I also have two copies of Virgin Prunes "If I die I die". Although the copy I bought in the 80s has a bit of a rough cover, I cannot let go of it. Too many good memories. -- I guess having some guidelines or "rules" is good in general, breaking them occasionally is perfectly fine. After all, it is a hobby. Enjoy!

I feel ya 😂. I got the Rocktober edition of Bad Company’s debut album just a couple months ago. I Almost bought the Analogue Productions 45 rpm but decided against it because the Rocktober sounds great and is only 1 lp. Now Rhino High Fidelity just did the album and I Had to buy it. Lol. I have the OG INXS. Good enough for me, for that album. Once I get my “grail” copy of an album, I get rid of whatever other copies I have. I don’t need multiple copies of the same album. I go for a “quality over quantity” type collection. Mostly for space reasons. Except in the case where there is a Mono and a Stereo version, such as the Beatles. That AP Yes 90125 is Astounding! Same with The Yes Album. I just got that as well and it totally Blew my mind! That Wish You Were Here Half Speed is my holy grail record right now. Thanks for sharing

Melinda, there are some records I have 2 copies of, but the reasons may differ from yours. I have 2 copies of Santana's "Abraxas," for example; the second copy is because my original had what I thought was too much surface noise. I have 2 copies of "Inner Secrets" also. My original was lost in a fire, and a few years later I found another copy, but it was a reissue with the disco-fied remix of "One Chain (Don't Make No Prison)," which I didn't care for. Then a few years ago I came across a sealed original pressing and bought it; I was quite pleased.
Speaking of Yes, I have 2 copies of "Fragile" also; the second is an Analogue Productions pressing, bought on a whim because I wondered if it would sound better (I can't tell you because it's been too long since I played either), and if you count the version in Steven Wilson's Yes remix box set, then I have 3 copies of "Fragile" and 2 of everything else, from "The Yes Album" to "Relayer."
All that to say I'm like you somewhat, but my motivations are different. Maybe I'm more practical than you, with sentiment having little to do with it. There are classic LPs I've bought because of curiosity or decided one day that I liked a song on them. I have the Alan Parsons LP you showed, but my copy is from Speakers Corner and my first purchase of the LP; I decided one day I liked "Eye in the Sky" enough to buy the LP.
My main problem continues to be not playing what I buy. There are at least 35 LPs that have yet to visit my turntable. Unfortunate.

Being an audiophile/audiofool, is a passion and it is what it is. I have made the same choice numerous times. However, I usually don't sell the excess, mostly, and consider it much like money in the bank. Albums are easy to ship and can be sold at any time no matter how many thousands we collect. ;)
BTW, I have been an audio NUT since my teens in the 70's and have thousands of LP's. When the CD revolution started, I listened and liked CD's but always preferred the warmth and depth of vinyl. In my opinion analog should remain analog from recording to playback. Yes, and I know most all recordings now are digital even with vinyl.
Now days one can spend 10's of thousands of dollars on a CD transport and DAC and they do sound very good. And for those who have very deep pockets, good for them. For me, I'm spinning vinyl until checkout time !!!

Disco music is the hardest genre of music to find reissues. Now I’m not talking about Saturday Night Fever or the mainstream Disco music. There was so many great Disco/Dance songs and albums that I call underground Disco/Dance that will never be rereleased. So I’m lucky I have my originals. Great example is Cerrone 3 that has Supernature on it. Which was played at the opening ceremony of the Paris2024. If you get a chance listen to it on whatever streaming service you have. I've owned pretty much all the albums you showed except for Toto IV (I owned their debut). I've heard a lot of Alan Parsons, but never owned an album. My favorite track from INXS "Kick" is New Sensation. Talk about a jolt of lightning to the spine when that track comes on! Some dumb production choices on that song though, like the brittle, snappy snare, the lifeless response-vocal ("...a new sensation") and the extensive use of gating to eliminate pretty much all instrument decay (producers loved that effect in the 80s). The bass sounds pretty great. Hutchence was one hell of a singer and his parts sound really good. Take care Melinda.

I remember watching a RUclips video about a person who constructed a million dollar sound system. It was incredible and impressive to say the least. But we get SO caught up in variations of sound and how one lp or even one system sounds in comparison to another; His quest for the perfect sound was never fulfilled, harmonics, distortion levels, vibrations, room ambiance, everything was endless tweaking to this day. Just fire up your Crosly, drop the $1.98 cartridge on a scratchy lp and enjoy the pleasure of where the music takes you!

I can't imagine dropping that much money and still not being satisfied. That just proves that expensive doesn't mean better. Somewhere in between expensive and a Crosley is the lane I want to be in. Lol. Thank you and enjoy your weekend.

I'm in the same boat. I own a Rocktober pressing of Kick on green vinyl from a few years ago. I bought the QRP release to sample the Atlantic 75 campaign but haven't had a chance to play it yet. I've also been eyeing the QRP of STP's Core even though I own 2 older pressings already. I'm about 50/50 on keeping versus selling the older copies. Space does become a consideration as much as sentimentality.

I've thought about buying that DTP record as well. The sentimental side of me overrides my practical side. Lol. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️

I rarely buy the same LP again. But I did buy Ace Frehley - 10,000 Volts twice. Because I got so caught up in the many variants he put out. I "needed" two. As of now, I am still glad I did it. I have bought other vinyls twice because of different color vinyls it came on like "Starz - Violation" (former "Looking Glass - Brandy" members. I never regret it! :)

The color variants are a lot of fun and I love supporting Ace. ♥️ It's good to have no regrets. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

Ah, you just have to have multiple copies sometimes. I have a lot of my Dad's vinyl collection from when he passed away. But I've started to retire some of his copies to preserve them. Hot August Night was one of them. His pressing still sounded good but the gatefold and sleeve were falling apart. I found another version of the same pressing in much better shape and it's now my go-to. I feel you on the Van Halen thing, too. I have a mixture of the first six albums - II and Diver Down are Bellman remasters but the rest are originals. And I gotta tell you, those Bellman remasters sound amazing. I had an original Diver Down a long time ago and the remaster blows it out of the water. I may eventually upgrade all of them to the Bellmans at some point.

I might come to a point where I only own the Bellman cuts and the MoFi's. As important as Van Halen is to me, I just don't need all of those extra copies that I will never listen to. I'm sorry for the loss of your dad. It's so great that you are taking care of his record collection. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️

Hi Melinda, off subject here but have you ever considered doing some reaction videos to bands old and new?

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  2 месяца назад +1

I have seen those videos but I have never really felt the need to do one. I don't watch them but I'm sure some of them are quite interesting. I do love that younger people are into the music of the 60's and 70's. Those types of videos are very popular. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
