I've watched all your clips lately and I have to say I think you're one of the most considerate and thoughtful translators. From the notes to subtitles themselves. It really feels like you spend time thinking about how to convey what they're saying across to people who might have zero knowledge or understanding of the language. It's something I've come to appreciate and respect a lot. It's more than just translating or directly interpreting but conveyance of an emotion or some intangible context that matches the situation.
This must be what it's like when people say they feel seen lol. I really appreciate this comment and it made me a bit emotional. I really respect all of the vtubers I translate and watch, so I do my best to convey the intent of what they say accurately. I feel like translation is conveying another culture in a way that's recognizable to the target audience's culture instead of just matching up words. That's still something I'm trying to figure out for myself and my style because I know that VTuber fans are fairly knowledgeable about Japanese culture. My baseline is always to consider an audience that has zero knowledge though, like you said. Thanks again, you've made my day!
There was supposed to be a RoberuNightMea collab at the end of March, as well as one with Tamaki, but Roberu got sick (I think he said it was tonsillitis and had a fever of like 40C/104F) and had to cancel on both. I've got one or two more clips planned, so hopefully that can tide us over until the next collab! ~TL Notes~ Roberu goes "hai hai hai" a lot in this clip to show he's listening and for the sake of avoiding clutter and ease of reading, I didn't sub it. 0:00/1:28 - 便り(tayori)/ハガキ職人(hagaki shokunin) - "hagaki shokunin" is radio show lingo where a regular fan often submits letters or questions so entertaining that both the hosts and the listeners recognize them instantly. "hagaki" for postcard "shokunin" for craftsman/artisan. I added the word "popular" to give it that nuance. 0:00 - EDIT: I've since learned that this is also a Japanese idiom that basically means that one is having a bad day or is having a streak of bad luck. Similar idioms include "when it rains, it pours." And when it's used in casual conversation, it's akin to when someone tells you they forgot their lunch, dropped 500 on gacha and got nothing, or got ganked in top lane without an mia call and you respond "unlucky"/EDIT It's a nonsensical name which led to their confusion. 0:29 - He writes this entire thing in a sort of "storytelling past/present" tense kinda thing, which we also do in English. I feel like I learned what it was called back when I studied Linguistics... but I don't remember. 1:44 - She misspoke here and clarified what she meant when Roberu asked. 4:46 - Japanese doesn't have a plural form so it's unclear if she means she stuck in one foot or both, but based on my experience (I've also done it and seen a bunch of places that do it in Japan) she probably stuck in both. This is also because they wash, inspect and disinfect your feet before letting you put them in, so you might as well go ahead and put both in at that point.
