Regarding the knife test. I would be interested in seeing how the break strength changes after a single knife pass. I think a single sharp edge scuff is a real world possibility that can weaken a strap.

I have tried many ways and this is what actually works for slob like me. My method: 1. straps separate from ratchets. 2. Take strap and fold once in the middle. 3. Lay the ends of the strap where you can get your hand on the hook end easily (it will pull out without issues when needed from just the hook, which I can find without looking). 5. ratchets all hung from an eye -bolt. Both the ratchets and strap hook ends within reach of the back window of my rig. When needed I reach in and grab one ratchet and one hook and what I need is instantly out of the rig and untangled, (I carry 4-6 usually). This works even if everything elseback there has become chaos. I've had the auto ratchet straps for about 5 years now and they are amazing. With that said, don't leave them outdoors for extended periods of time. I left mine outside for about 2 years and one of the auto retract stopped working completely so I have to re-roll them by hand each time I use it. The other one works fine. :)
I think most companies are turning to “computer tested” where they run their tests and come up with the working load and breaking limits, etc on computer programs where it’s all still theoretical/ based on calculations from SOME actual data of what the product is supposed to be, and don’t physically test. Saves a lot of R&D money up front...
@@chevyon37s the testing section is very expensive and most companies prefer not to have any, we let customer feedback to give any direction, and I have reliable sources of this, bye.
You’re a wizard once again. Would love to see larger sizes I.e. 2” or 3”. Or tow straps “to failure” with your precise measurements would be super informative.
It's gotten to the point that if im going to the hardware store to buy something, I take 5 minutes to check if Project Farm has a video on it. That goes for the wife too. Thanks for everything you do Project Farm.
I was in the Navy for 9 years and I was a deck ape for 3. We generally use nylon double braid for our mooring lines because its very strong and also has some stretch. If you are doing something like mooring a ship and you know theres gonna be pushing and pulling (water current) you want a little bit of stretch so the lines dont part right away. HOWEVER, the danger of stretchy lines is when they do break they snap back quite fast and can cut a grown man in half. We also tried using polypropylene lines but they didnt work out so well. They part quickly when you try to stretch them which means no snap back and no one gets hurt. But you do need to allow a bit of stretch or else they will be breaking all the time. Rubber bands versus chains would be the extreme ends of the spectrum in this comparison. Either absolutely no give and they snap instantly, or ridiculous give and they cant really hold anything together. With regards to ratchet straps you'll have to make a choice. How much give do you want to allow before breaking? and will it be a safety issue. Thats why when you are trying to pull a car out of a swamp or pit you need to keep everyone the hell away. Most of those towing lines are nylon. They can hurt bystanders if they break, and the average person doesn't know about this principle.
As a young Australian, I will probably never use most of these products you test, but these videos are very entertaining and insightful 💯 It's 3am, never been this early 😅 I would also love to see the Best Spray Adhesive.
Since almost all are made in China, you probably will use these, a LOT of Chinese products are just rebrands all over the world, they usually only change things like color and labels. You could probably look up what Aussie brands are the same as the US brands.
Honestly the tests you manage to run are just spectacular. I wonder if any companies have contacted you inquiring about the tests and results and stuff. Destructive testing is just the best.
I am very happy with my Haul Masters. They held about 700kg / 1550 lbs of cargo for my move from Orlando, FL to Edmonton, AB - Canada. It was a 8 day long trip, 4700 km / 2900 mi, some bumpy roads, we went through rain, snow, blizzard, ice and it held everything inside in place in my trucks bed and kept the tarp secured. No signs of rusty, tear, hook bends or whatever. Very recommended!
This is the only RUclips channel I am addicted & return repeatedly. Have changed numerous purchasing habits due to watching particular video's. My biggest complaint concerning rachet straps is my son & friends "forgetting" from where they borrowed them. Will be buying Rocket exclusively in the future.
I have several of these brands, and the takeaway I had was the shock I felt seeing how much tension was lost over time! I trailer a bunch of things - you can bet that I'll be securing, having a coffee, tensioning a 2nd time, and re-tensioning about 1-2 hours into my haul!
5:02 "Medium-duty ratchet tie-down set. However, it comes with a heavy-duty drawstring bag!" lol I love these matter-of-fact reads of their product descriptions.
I recently saw Jason from fireball tools testing the effects and strength of straps with various numbers of twists. Thought of you when I saw it Still waiting on that tap and die video ;)
I bought a pack of 4 Tekton 1”wracheting straps for around $15 about 10 years ago. I use them frequently and keep them in my truck. When I got them I thought they were basically disposable, but the price was alright. Kinda surprising how long they have lasted and they are still in great shape. Had a orange harbor freight set before that lasted a few uses before I chucked em.
I'm not sure what I like most about your channel, the product test results to get the most bang for my buck or the ingenious ideas and gadgets you come up with to test everything. Thanks again!

Issue is that there is a scientific testing and standards (ANSI S3.19-1974, ANSI S12.6-2016, ANSI S12.42-2010) for ear plugs, so many differences would essentially be very subjective, because the standard tests are going to prove the manufacturers claims as true. A lot of what he is testing is manufacturer claims where there is no a standards, or minimum requirements.

As an avid DIY guy, I really appreciate the fair testing you do for each product comparison you exhibit. I use the information to make purchase decisions often. Thank you!!!
Props to the storage method! I've got a number of different brands in my possession due to my purchases being made out of necessity vs "oh let me go buy some nice straps for next time." I've mainly got a mix of haul master and husky, however I'm slowly but surely getting rid of the haul master due to how easily the ratchets themselves get damaged, have you accidentally stepped on one? And unlike Consumer Reports, Todd isn't fabricating results to get the answers he thinks we want.
OH! No! Cousin eddie! Taking up those dangerous tasks! Such a hero!
lol. Yes, he's always up to the challenge!
@@ProjectFarm Have NEVER heard him complain -- not even once! 👍🏼😉
I'd be surprised if Cousin Eddie gave his slap of approval on a few tests, he's such a trooper!
I've had the auto ratchet straps for about 5 years now and they are amazing. With that said, don't leave them outdoors for extended periods of time. I left mine outside for about 2 years and one of the auto retract stopped working completely so I have to re-roll them by hand each time I use it. The other one works fine. :)
in the modern age, where manufacturers have no interest in testing their shit before selling it, we have to test it privately! thank you Project Farm!
Thank you very much!
@@AsitShouldBe yup, often they’ll roll with it if they can get away with it being untested and getting minimal customer feedback!
Yes! I was one of the people that requested this one. Glad to see you’re able to do a video on this!
Thank you for requesting this one!!
@@ProjectFarm test Paracord next! Makes sense to test it after ratchet straps :)
Your voice is like the perfect voice to listen to product specs, I could just listen to you list off product details all day
Thanks!
You’re a wizard once again. Would love to see larger sizes I.e. 2” or 3”. Or tow straps “to failure” with your precise measurements would be super informative.
4" would definitely interest me. Both hook ends as well as chain ends.
Wow, 2 strap videos in one week!! You and fireball tools must have known what needed to be tested
It's gotten to the point that if im going to the hardware store to buy something, I take 5 minutes to check if Project Farm has a video on it.
That goes for the wife too.
Thanks for everything you do Project Farm.
Does Project Farm have a video on your wife? How'd she fare?
@@myquealer She seemed like the best value for money option.

Just like Duct tape, No longer as strong as it was.

I giggled for a good 7 seconds from that comment.
You should test some taps and dies. I would like to specifically see Gearwrench and Irwin Hansen.
I agree with testing taps. would be a good one!
I second this, I'd love to see a video comparing tap and die sets!
I 3rd this lol
I am always amazed at how he thinks of all the many ways to tests products. I also like the tip that was thrown in at the end.
Thank you very much!
Thanks for sharing.
You can also lay some sort of blanket over each line as well to help absorb/deflect the energy if the line ever snaps.
Pound for pound this is the best RUclips channel ever ! Really appreciate your tests & your delivery 👍👍
Going to adopt your “storage technique”. Sure beats my “toss it in a ziplock and untangle the knots later” technique.

Coming right on the heels of the Fireball Tools video, this is just perfect timing!!
Was thinking same thing after their video about the twist test
God, this channel and man is deserving of a blank check to fund certification of products.
You're awesome, man.
For next winter, ice melt tests would be awesome!
Yes definitely need a icemelt test.
How about plastic water bottles and which is best 🤣🤣🤣

Since almost all are made in China, you probably will use these, a LOT of Chinese products are just rebrands all over the world, they usually only change things like color and labels. You could probably look up what Aussie brands are the same as the US brands.
As a middle aged Australian, heaps of this stuff is available here or via eBay/amazon.
I'd love it if you did a comparison test on workplace quality walkie-talkies.
That would be great. I bought some Midland walkies that claim 20 miles but they are really like 1/4 mile.
Same! My property uses cheap ones all the time.

Oh the irony of the 'easy fill'
Thanks for the feedback.
Todd’s candid moments are rare, but when he has them, he knocks it out of the park. Viva la cousin eddy!

Is there a spreadsheet with PF recommend products? Would make an awesome reference guide when at the Home Despot.
Not recommendations, really, but a catalog of the videos.

Awesome! Thank you!
"We're going to test that" puts me in the mindset of "Lets get ready to Rumble".
lol. Nice!!
my heart rate excelerates lol
And manufacturers start to sweat.
I have several of these brands, and the takeaway I had was the shock I felt seeing how much tension was lost over time! I trailer a bunch of things - you can bet that I'll be securing, having a coffee, tensioning a 2nd time, and re-tensioning about 1-2 hours into my haul!

Todd, I admire how much thought you put into the preparation of the tests on products and getting them as "fair" as possible.
Thanks!
I recently saw Jason from fireball tools testing the effects and strength of straps with various numbers of twists. Thought of you when I saw it
Still waiting on that tap and die video ;)
Any time a product claims to be "indestructible", I am immediately suspicious. Nothing is ever indestructible.
Great point! I immediately want to test their claim. lol
Gotta read the fine print. It usually has a disclaimer next to claims like that that says under specific conditions.
Exactly. Just like when a product claims to be "fool proof". Those engineers greatly underestimate the ingenuity of the fools.
"Marginally less destructible according to our internal testing in lab conditions with a big ol' thumb on the scale" = truth in advertising?
Well . . . *Nothing* is indestructable, Can't destroy something that don't exist. lol.

Do ear plugs! There are so many styles/brands to test!
I'd love to see what kind of testing methodology you come up with!
You never fail to impress.
Nice simple testing that most of us could repeat in our own garages. I know it take a lot of set up time and thought to come up with these setups.

That time-lapse stretching video shows how unintuitively stretchy these things are. Really interesting!

You should do best levels, like 2ft 4ft, see how accurate they ate for level and drop and temperature checks

If you're worried about accuracy then buy a decent level and just don't drop it. Stabila seems to be the industry standard.
