Chem Ph.D. here, nice testing, as usual! We use a lot of EPDM in my job and I must say I'm surprised with the weathering seen on several of the EPDM labeled straps. I suspect the heavily cracked and weathered straps were either another elastomer or a blended one (SBR is half the price). The Amazing straps are the only one that behaved like true EPDM: this material is a common roofing cover, good for decades! In the US we often get "mislabled" products , PYREX of old (now Pyrex) is NOT actually borosilicate glass, and US Synthetic oil isnt :( caveat emptor.

    • @Reziac

As I observe above.... the difference seems to be in how well the rubber is cured/vulcanized, and in my experience only Made In USA rubber is done right. I have made-in-USA rubber bungees that were at full stretch in CA desert sun for 10 years and have neither stretched out nor cracked (I still use them, they are now over 20 years old and still like brand new). Yet none of the made-in-China lasted more than 6 months. I've also seen made-in-USA tires last over 50 years with no cracking (also in the desert, trailer so low miles but all sun exposure all the time) yet Chinese tires are on their way out at 5 years old. Guess which goes on my truck.

VERY IMPRESSIVE, Commander! All the tests were spot on and the U.V. ones and stretch as far as strength and time went are crucial to someone that uses those things. We have a bag full of all matters of them that we got when the wife's step-dad passed but I rely more on rope and chains for my tying and trying to stabilize stuff. TRYING is the main term here for me. Glad all is well and hope the rain is coming and doing what it needs to. HAPPY PAPPY DAY and God Bless ALL Yall!

I live in the PNW and 7 years ago I used a handful of HDX bungee cords to string up a tarp from the tree in my yard. Long story short, I accidentally left one of the HDX bungee cords 20 feet up in the tree and 7 rainy winters later it's still taut and bright red! Surprising results since I've found most of Home Depot's HDX brand products to be terrible quality. Again, thank you for the wonderful videos! Please keep 'em coming!

I've been using the Husky EPDM straps for at least a decade now. I primarily use them to strap down lumber being hauled on my short bed truck with the tail gate down. They stretch out perfectly to hold 2x4's, plywood, and more down securely without any sliding around. I do not leave them exposed to UV for more than a day or so at most. I also replace all my bungie cords every 2-3 years as I'm fearful of one rotting just enough to snap while pulling them tight and catching one in the head or worse. Awesome video!

The UV test was invaluable for me, and this was very timely! I keep losing bungee cords that are outside doing simple things like keeping a PTO shaft in place or keeping the backhoe stabilizers from dropping while it is in storage. They often disintegrate after just a couple of months, and was thinking last week that I need to experiment with different brands. Looks like you've already done it for me, and I just put some Nite Ize on order for those jobs.

I am glad you did this test for 2 reasons:
    1. I never planned on the straps lasting more than one trip, know I know that I was right for the most part.
    2. I do not have a chain hoist however I do have a lot of chain come a longs. Mostly Beebe, but some others as well with chain lengths from 3' to 25'. On occasion I tarp loads and use a lot rope and bungee straps. Generally bungee straps are ether too long to work well or too short to reach a tie point. I never thought of hooking up a chain come a long to a bungee to stretch it into place. Thanks for the tip.

I've tried a bunch of epdm style straps over the years for securing loads inside my truck and tying ladders to the rack on top. The best strap I've found so far is from a company called "The Better Bungee." It's a polyurethane compound rather than an EPDM rubber and keeps its suppleness a lot longer in my experience (Even not in tension, EPDM straps start to harden after a year or two). They make both bungee style round ties and flat straps (I use the flat ones). They're much lighter and more flexible than EPDM. I haven't tested them like you did, though...

We keep straps in the bed of our work trucks year round. 14 years ago I noticed that some straps lasted longer than others. It took a while to narrow down the ones that held up well. I decided that HDX was the best of the ones we tried. I have used the same set for close to 10 years. They spend a lot of time not in use under or beside stuff in the shade, and sometimes the truck spends the day parked in the shade. I don't play around with bad cords after we had a friend losing his vision in one eye after a bungee failed. The older HDX bungees hold up longer than the current ones do and they caused me no end of trouble trying to figure out what brand we had that was holding up so well when they changed the design of the hook and I kept looking for the hook style that matches what I had. After looking for a year I found the original container and was able to get things narrowed down. So much marketing hype on all those straps it caused so many arguments with my coworkers watching them buy crap and I would say get back to me in 6 months and let's see how they are holding up. Thanks for the testing and showing the other brands that are better than most.

That takes me back. About 20 years ago, I was helping my grandfather cover his boat for the winter, and we were going to attach the cover using bungee cords. He bought 2 boxes of the Harbor Freight plain black bungee cords for the job. We winterized the boat and pulled the cover over. After about 10 minutes of pulling the cover over and positioning it just right we opened the boxes of bungee cords. We untangle them and start putting them on. The first one gets hooked on and I start pulling...POP! The bungee cord breaks at about 1 inch of stretch. "What the hell", I mutter to myself so grandpa can't hear me and toss it aside. I grab another and start stretching and POP! it breaks too. We start pulling on all the cords and they all break around 1 inch of stretch. We laughed for a few minutes and then went in to town to buy more from a different brand. Someone must've forgotten one of the 12 herbs and spices in the factory in china where they were made.
    Good times.
