A few bits about various ports:
Saturn: Apparently this version had slightly higher quality audio than the PlayStation one, tho I've played both and can't really notice it.
MS DOS: Bought this when it came out in 1996 and it ran VERY smoothly, I remember Rayman and Jazz Jackrabbit being among the first PC games I played with smooth scrolling. Not sure why it wasn't smooth for you - maybe backward compatibility / emulation settings?
GBC: This did some impressive scanline interrupt tricks with palette swapping, to put more colors on the screen than the GBC allowed by default. That bgm, although high pitched and terrible, is actually an early version of the music from Rayman 2.

It wouldn't surprise me with the Saturn having hight sound quality. Many ports on the Saturn do due to more memory being allocated to it.

I'd add that the Jaguar port is unfinished in comparison to any other version, this is probably due to the 16-bit with its addons and the transition to the 32-bit era, for instance, the 32X version of Rayman was dropped and the Jaguar port only materialized because it was not too late, but it feels unfinished, the Bandland stages which require sliding on the smooth platforms doesn't work, I didn't go further but I wouldn't be surprised if later stages suffered even more, adding to that, the sound design feels very shallow, even being a cartridge, proper sound effects and good music could be rendered there.
It's true the Saturn has clearer, higher quality audio and some stages are different, backgrounds make more sense in some areas on the Saturn, while the PS adds some neat effects no other version has.
Mega Man X4 is yet another example the Saturn has better audio, and surely many arcade ports cut down PS ports even further to free that little extra bandwidth to be used elsewhere in the games. How I wish 32-bit consoles didn't suffer from RAM like they do, they all had decent CPU and GPUs for 1994-esque hardware, but RAM being expensive really held many of their potential back.

WOLFENSTEIN 3D was essentially a direct port and id said they were surprised how good it was and didn't need much tweaking other than sound. DOOM on Jaguar is considered quite a good version except for lacking in-game music. id said a month or so after its release that they could have increased the texture resolution w/ no performance hit, but it was too late and Atari didn't want to delay the release. I think there's a 'homebrew' version of it that did that and other improvements. Jaguar is one of those systems where it took a while for devs to really learn what could be done...which is why most games are pretty much Atari ST/Amiga ports mostly running on the 68000 w/ graphics enhancements and MOD soundtracks. I think RAYMAN used the Jerry FM synth emulator, though.

160×180, we get 20 all around. As far as the cache architecture goes, I don’t think the res lowering is directly related.
(Regarding why no resolution toggle as in the PC version)
The reason the PC has it is because the hardware it can be played on varies is speed/processing power. All of the Jaguar boxes are the same. (Isn’t developing for consoles great? :-)
      -Shawn Green
      id Software
The little risc engined were decent processors. I was surprised that they didn't use off the shelf designs, but they basically worked ok. They had some design hazards (write after write) that didn't get fixed, but the only thing truly wrong with them was that they had scratchpad memory instead of caches, and couldn't execute code from main memory. I had to chunk the DOOM renderer into nine sequentially loaded overlays to get it working (with hindsight, I would have done it differently in about three...).
      John Carmack
Jaguar version also runs in more colours than the PC Version, using the CRY 16 bit mode.
Carmack did go onto say if he wrote Doom from scratch for the Jaguar, he'd TARGET using a higher resolution mode (it runs in the lowest mode on the machine, with better lighting and frame rate).

The mobile and DSi ports are based on the PC version (as are all ports done this millenium, even though the Playstation and Saturn versions are superior.) Both ports have an "easy mode" that gives more lives. The DSi version is the PC version with an even more cut down soundtrack, a feature where the photographer takes a picture of your face when you hit a checkpoint, and odd changes to the graphics like darker backgrounds. The Android version has the full soundtrack of the PSX/Saturn game, but is let down by terrible touch controls.

Project Manager of Rayman on GBA:
"Originally, all sprites were going to pull their colors from a shared palette of 256 colors. That is how the PC version of Rayman was built. Similarly, the PlayStation version used a large number of colors. This was fine, but the ROM footprint for sprites using that many colors is much larger and requires more time to transfer, especially on the Game Boy Advance. It dropped the frame rate to about 15-30 frames per second. The solution was to bring the sprites down to 16 palettes of 16 colors. This was difficult, because before that, the sprites shared a large common palette. Again, the artists had to redraw all the sprites and wisely select color palettes. The amount of work paid off, as the result looked nearly identical to the revision before it, and we accelerated the game to acceptable speeds."

I'm not sure if the MS-DOS version runs at 30 or 60fps. It wasn't uncommon for DOS era 2D games to run at 30fps. UBI Soft is quite good with multi-platform releases. Even the GBC game looks fun.

The folks at Ubisoft had an online conference this week and put to
rest the debate about which version of Rayman was considered best.
When questioned about it, Ubisoft stated that their playtesters
favored the version for the Jaguar over those for the PSX and Saturn.
Ubisoft also mentioned that one of the main reasons for favoring
Jag Rayman was "controlability" which was supposed to have been one
factor that some certain (ahem!) people/magazines took issue with.
Some other things learned about Rayman was that Ubisoft has been
developing the game for the 32/64-bit systems simultaneously for
    more than a year.
The programmer for Jag Rayman also attended the conference and made
a surprising revelation. The 68000 CPU was utilized for 70% of the
code of Jag Rayman! So it shows as programmers migrate to using
more and more of the RISC CPUs and less of the 68000, the Jag can
match or overpower the PSX and Saturn at various tasks.

    Wooow Rayman !
I remember reading about the plans to port it into 32x. It would probably be the same case as with Pitfall, the only game I saw in action on a Jaguar. I guess the Jag discussion is on thanks to this episode. I think its safe to say, that this is right now truly a classic 2D platformer from the 90s. Altough my favourite 90s 2D platformer would be definetly Claw. Sadly it wont be never ever discussed here, as it was a PC exclusive :P Which is a real shame, I can imagine the port of this game on Sega Saturn with even better music than the original midi soundtrack becoming one of the cult titles for the system. Unfortunately Monolith productions until the console releases of F.E.A.R. were tied with MS.
I also remember reading somewhere about the plans to develop Tomb Raider for the Jaguar. Seeing as Ngage could handle it (but it was more of a tech demo for the system) Im sure the real Jag could do it as well. Some of the homebrews for the system look quite impressive. Maybe if the games and the unit were cheaper than the competition (Sony and Sega), the console would be at least somewhat a success.
Plus I realised recently, that after Atari stopped making Jag, and until Xbox came around the console market was dominated by Japanese manufacturers.

The GBA version is the version that I played as a child. Made me feel in live with the series. It made me buy and play Rayman 2 on PC, which was even better. One of my favorite games from my childhood. I never got to finish the game, so currently I'm doing just that with the Dreamcast version of Rayman 2 in an emulator. I'm ready passed the point that I got to as a child, which was a bit before the half of the game hahaha.
I was even worse at Rayman 3. I bought the game with the little money I had around the released, but I never finished the tutorial! At one point you need to punch around a wall to make a platform go up, but I never understood that completely and tried to fly around the wall to punch the target haha. Now I know better, so when I finnaly finish Rayman 2, I'll do the same with Rayman 3.
Now that I think of it, I've never actually finished a Rayman game.
Have you ever played Rayman Redemption? It's a fan-made remake of Rayman 1 and it adds a lot of content, tweaks the levels a bit and makes the game more sane. Ater Rayman 3 I'm planning on finishing that game as wel. I've played it for a bit and it's really good so far!

I've also always preferred the higher pitched SFX/Voices of the Saturn as well, they made an already very cartoonish game feel even more cartoonish.
Although there's one thing I'm curious about with your Saturn footage, is it actually that bright on hardware or does your capture setup do something to the footage?

Not surprised the Saturn version did well and won again, but the more I think about it, the more I feel bad for Atari Jaguar owners having (one of) their only redeeming games be outclassed by the 32-bit machines that came after. The console pretty much got straight up murdered by them.
Now on to the other ports.
I'd say while the MS-DOS port is disappointing, it's still a pretty good version worth trying for PC owners (with MS-DOS).
I'm absolutely amazed at the GBC FMV. It reminds me of that Toy Story Racer game on GBC, which was actually made by Tiertex! (Which by the way, I still can't believe it was made by them) Otherwise, pretty nice port that kept the GBC limitations in mind. (Except the music)
While the GBA port looks as nice as the 32-bit console versions, which is pretty cool actually, it's easily the worst port yet again.... (WHEN WILL IT END??????) As you said, I would've preferred re-drawn sprites to fit in the GBA's tiny screen. However, it still has that garbled and awful sound like most GBA games have, which I would agree on you about.

There's also Rayman Forever for PC. Apparently it lacks a lot of the ost though, maybe the dos version did as well.

The GBA version is impressive, taking in mind the device was like a more powerful SNES. I wonder of this game would had been possible with the SFX2 chip.

Well, duh. The GBA it's not just a more powerful SNES, it's actually a 32-bit console.

Such a beautiful game! I'll try to get the Saturn port in the future if I ever see it for a good price. Rayman 2 is definitely my favorite though and it would be great to see a future episode on it!
