wow- what a perfect specimen- the only thing i can think wouldn't agree with me is the neck. Never liked the 60s thin.... sad to think there are zero red 335s with a good neck (good into)

To me gibson never nail the cherry any more. Something about the old cherry ones. Could be the yellowing of the nitro but yet to see a modern one have that colour

Please define the word checking and what year was Clapton's guitar. ?
Checking means the Varnish on the Guitar has cracks in it, because wood expands and contracts with the weather. Clapton's was a '64
Since you asked so nicely, "checking" refers to the pattern of small cracks, usually comprising a series of parallel lines, but sometimes loosely checkered, that can appear on certain guitars with nitrocellulose finishes. Clapton's 335 was a '64.
I think Clapton played a 64 I call it lacquer chip because as the guitars lacquer finish ages it cracks
