  • How to Catch crabs in Galveston Texas. In the gulf of Mexico there are tons of crabs and in this video I will show you how to catch crabs using a hand line. It is really simple, cheap, and great family fun! The typical crab I catch on the Texas Coast is Blue crab, which are great eating. I will also take time at the end to show you how to clean blue crab. I love fishing in Galveston, and you can use these blue crabs as bait for black drum "Big Ugly" and other types of fish. I always bring the family along with me crabbing. Crabbing as a family is always more fun than crabbing alone:). We use chicken as our crab bait. I hope you enjoy the video, and if you have questions please comment bellow. Video Shot on a Canon 80D, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens. Editing done on adobe premiere pro.

    A lot of good basic information. I had a grandmother growing up that lived on Deal Island, Maryland. Right on the Chesapeake Bay and I would spend every summer up there working on a commercial crab boat. I would recommend try steaming them in a pot with a raised rack. Under the rack mix 2/3 water and 1/3 vinegar. Put the crabs in whole and cover with old bay seasoning. After it starts steaming turn the fire to medium and let steam for 30 mins. Then serve. They clean very easy when cooked and the taste is a life changing experience. Also when holding a live crab its a lot easier to grab their swimmer fin (very back leg on the right and left side). Grab it right where it meets the body. The claws can not bend back and reach that point.

      Substitute Beer for water.
      Still use the 1/3 vinegar, and don't forget the Old Bay seasoning.
      Used to crab the South River tributary of the Bay.

    Always crab around a full moon. They feed better then and have more meat in them around that time. I was always taught to boil them whole, clean them after cooking. Good vid, learned as a kid by using string, now I use nothing but nets. Good vid.

    On a crab, there are four legs on each side. Grab the two back legs on either side, and you can safely hold them that way (one handed), without getting nipped. Quicker, and easier than trying to get both claws at the same time.

      @SharingTheOutdoors 5 лет назад +1

      @@HatchingaFamily Never actually done a steam recipe, we did a mixed fish and steamed crab , but I think I just said steam them. Pretty easy though, you just get a steam pot, heat it up real good so it's steaming really well, toss the crabs in a layer on the inner part of the pot. We cover them with Old Bay seasoning for best results, but any salty powdered seafood seasoning will work, just lay it on thick. Then another layer, but we always use corn in the husk between layers of crabs. Cooks right along with them. Simply cook them until they are bright red, they're done! Thanks for giving me an idea for a video, catch, steam, cook, or something like that. LOL.

      The crabs are everywhere on the Texas coast including JFK causeway. I have had better luck catching them in darker water areas. So many Drum and Redfish in the area that eat them makes them harder to come by. Areas near marsh or grass gives them a better chance of survival, and improves your chances.

    So exactly were you crabbing being able to walk in the water to catch these crabs. I assume you can get close to this location by car and how do you get to this location after you stop with your car. Can you walk to the location after getting out of your car? If I can see the location on a map, that would be awesome. Thanks again for the video.

    Learned how to crab up north from my grandparents. Never seen that method though. In Dallas and coming down to Galveston in Oct for the bull red run. I'll give that a shot. We clean and cook them diff as well. More of the old school way. Do you by any chance know if the crabbing is good in Oct?

    Does the ice flash freeze them? Or do they die without water? The nearest ocean is 1500 miles away so I’m pretty ignorant on ocean life.

    • @HatchingaFamily
      @HatchingaFamily  4 года назад +1

      Good question! From what I understand Its important to not clean/cook crab that has been dead for a while, because it spoils the meat. So what I do is put them on ice to slow their metabolism down, and allow them to stay alive while I drive home. Then I clean them in that state of lethargy. I'm still learning, but its a fun hobby. They will die without water but that take awhile for blue crabs.
