- How to Catch crabs in Galveston Texas. In the gulf of Mexico there are tons of crabs and in this video I will show you how to catch crabs using a hand line. It is really simple, cheap, and great family fun! The typical crab I catch on the Texas Coast is Blue crab, which are great eating. I will also take time at the end to show you how to clean blue crab. I love fishing in Galveston, and you can use these blue crabs as bait for black drum "Big Ugly" and other types of fish. I always bring the family along with me crabbing. Crabbing as a family is always more fun than crabbing alone:). We use chicken as our crab bait. I hope you enjoy the video, and if you have questions please comment bellow. Video Shot on a Canon 80D, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens. Editing done on adobe premiere pro.

A lot of good basic information. I had a grandmother growing up that lived on Deal Island, Maryland. Right on the Chesapeake Bay and I would spend every summer up there working on a commercial crab boat. I would recommend try steaming them in a pot with a raised rack. Under the rack mix 2/3 water and 1/3 vinegar. Put the crabs in whole and cover with old bay seasoning. After it starts steaming turn the fire to medium and let steam for 30 mins. Then serve. They clean very easy when cooked and the taste is a life changing experience. Also when holding a live crab its a lot easier to grab their swimmer fin (very back leg on the right and left side). Grab it right where it meets the body. The claws can not bend back and reach that point.
Substitute Beer for water.
Still use the 1/3 vinegar, and don't forget the Old Bay seasoning.
Used to crab the South River tributary of the Bay.
Cute little one. It's all about making memories for the kids. Love this.
Thank you! I agree, get the kids outside and away from the TV. (Also get me away from the TV lets be honest).

Always crab around a full moon. They feed better then and have more meat in them around that time. I was always taught to boil them whole, clean them after cooking. Good vid, learned as a kid by using string, now I use nothing but nets. Good vid.
Thank you! I will have to try the boiling them whole idea, Hadn't heard that but It honestly is probably better. I'm no pro at cooking them.
Love this Dad action! Ty so much going 2 Galveston for vacation 💓 can't wait to try this!!!!
So cool of you involving the kids with this!!!
Thank you! Love seeing them enjoying the outdoors:)
Wow, that was awesome, going to try this with my kids. I live in Corpus Christi area. Thanks man 🤙🏼
I love corpus Christi! Been a long time since I've been out there, you'll have to let me know how it goes! Good luck

Very informative. Thanks for the great info, I'm gonna attempt to take my granddaughter out to the panhandle in a couple weeks.
Even with a baby on your hip- you did a really awesome job on this! Be proud or what you are doing! “Teach a man to fish”!
Thank you for making this video I live close to Galveston and always wanted to do this
😂😂 Sarah: ”swaddle the crab, Jared!”
Sarah:). Love her commentary
Thank you SO MUCH for this video Jared. We are going to Galveston soon and you showed me everything I needed to know. How to catch, I'm bringing my net now. How to clean, thanks for the tip about the lungs. Just had a fresh lakeside crawfish boil and the lungs are delicious. You video just saved me from getting sick. I totally would have eaten them.
I'll try to remember to share with you if I catch anything.
Btw we live in Kansas and I fish every Friday night with my Son, so I am SUPER excited.
Yes please let me know how it goes!! I hope you catch a lot. Glad your fishing up in Kansas with your son! He will remember that forever
Just got back to Kansas and I have to tell you Jared, WE HAD A BLAST!!! I caught 15ish crabs but only one better than 5". I had so much fun. Thanks for the tips.
I sauteed him in garlic butter and he was delicious.
@@alansmith323 that's awesome man thanks for keeping me updated! Glad you were able to catch a lot! That's the best part, even if they aren't huge
Simple and rewarding. On the cleaning, I use a soft bristle toothbrush. Works amazingly!
GReat idea thank you. I'll try it next time. CHeers.
Thanks for making this video! I’ve been wanting to start fishing and crabbing with my daughter but I have no idea what I’m doing. This helps a lot.
THank you! Good luck out there. Let me know how it goes.
Great video! My wife and I usually crab out in Freeport/Surfside. But either way, string and chicken is so fun to catch em. Stay humble!
Awesome. I like surfside beach a lot. In recent trips I almost always go to surfside. Great beaches.
i lived in houston but in the summers we spent our summers in a bayhouse from 75 to 86 redfishing, crabbing etc...best times OF MY LIFE.....I DREAM OF THOSE DAYS......AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME MY MOUTH IS DROULING FOR BOILED CRAB
Super cool that you’re my neighbor!! I live 59N towards Kingwood!!
Nice! I love the kingwood area, beautiful place
So do I!
Nice love that you are doing it with your kids!!! I am trying to do it too.
Thank you James. Ya It is really fun to try as a family. Even if its a bad day for catching crabs your kids will still love playing in the water. I always try to go somewhere that the kids will like. That way if no crabs, no worries.
Great edits and filming! I’m very impressed. I hope you keep this up! This is amazing!
Thanks Amber and thanks for the advice! Adobe is a beast but like ya said, I'll get used to it the more I practice.

Iove that you have your children there learning valuable skills, love the video you earned a sub.
Thanks Timmothy! Love hanging out with those kiddos! Have a great day
Nice job Jared! I’m surprised you stayed out there until noon. It’s HOT!
Hahaha it was hot!! We had big plans to get there at 8 AM to beat the heat, didn't happen:)
I’m from Maryland. We steam them up here with seasoning. The middle you clean out is the fat of the crab, probably the best part. I know you boil them down there, and they are probably tasty. But your not living until you taste a steamed Maryland crab!
Great tip! I didn't know the middle part was fat. I thought it was guts. Maybe I'll try using it next time.
Maryland crab taste like shit, but you're right the fat is good. They taste better just marinated in a soy sauce beoth and eaten raw.
@@HatchingaFamily they are some guts in the middle but when we steam them up here the fat which we call the mustard turns a yellowish n sometimes brownish color and it is amazing. and believe it or not the lungs which we call the devil actually won't make u sick if u eat but it tastes like poo anyways so i won't eat it either way
Very cool video! Nice demonstrations!
Thanks momma:) love u
nicely done love Galveston Island
The best! Such a great place to spend a day.
Thank you for taking the RUclips family Crabbing.
Please start a "Man vs Wild" segment, I only subbed for that.

Great video guys
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you!
Thank you for this video!!!!
Wow 😳 so many crabs 🦀
Haha yep! This was August. I tried recently and got nothing so I guess it's gotta be the right time of year. Thanks for visiting the channel! Hope to see ya again.
Great video ! Lookin forward to giving this catch method a good try here in Rockport 🦀
Thanks Jason. Let me know how it goes:). Never been to Rockport but looks super nice!
@@HatchingaFamily they have amazing fishing
On a crab, there are four legs on each side. Grab the two back legs on either side, and you can safely hold them that way (one handed), without getting nipped. Quicker, and easier than trying to get both claws at the same time.
Thanks! I'll try that next time. As you can see in the video haha they almost got me
He's. Great catcher tho
Haha that's dope out there with your kid.
ha ha thanks man. Always gotta bring the kids.
Hello 🍺Very good video and vlog 👍Good job my friend👏
Thanks I apricate that. Have a good weekend.
Thank you! Awesome job!
3:30 GREAT TIP!!!
Thank you:)!
Thanks. I’m gonna give it a go.
You should! Let me know how it is this time of year! I've never been in November.
Take it from a fan of Chesapeake Bat Blue Crabs, they're better eating steamed! Great video!
Thank you! That means a lot, I really like your channel. I haven't tried them steamed before. Got any videos on how to steam them I could watch?
@@HatchingaFamily Never actually done a steam recipe, we did a mixed fish and steamed crab , but I think I just said steam them. Pretty easy though, you just get a steam pot, heat it up real good so it's steaming really well, toss the crabs in a layer on the inner part of the pot. We cover them with Old Bay seasoning for best results, but any salty powdered seafood seasoning will work, just lay it on thick. Then another layer, but we always use corn in the husk between layers of crabs. Cooks right along with them. Simply cook them until they are bright red, they're done! Thanks for giving me an idea for a video, catch, steam, cook, or something like that. LOL.
@@SharingTheOutdoorsThat is good advice. We will have to try and steam them next time. Gotta love Old Bay:). You should for sure make a video about it. I think I understand but It would be fun to see how you set up this steam pot.
Great information
I am very new to your channel but I absolutely love it. Can you please share any areas where we can go crabbing. All I know is at the beach, I can never find any spots
Let's be honest.
The baby did all the work. 😂
Great video, learned a lot! 🙂👌🏼
Awesome! Thank you! HOpe you give it a try
Great video. I take my wife and 2 boys crabbing in Galveston and Texas City a lot. In fact, we are headed there this weekend. You should try pork neck bones for bait I seem to run out of bait and usually have a cooler full of crabs by the end of the day. But I also switch out between chicken legs and pork neck-bones. I have better luck with neck-bones but that is just my opinion. Try it you might be surprised by the results. Good Luck with crabbing in the future maybe see you down there.
Thanks MrBeal:). I will try that next time. I think we are going to go out this weekend as well to the coast! Nice 3 day weekend and all. Where can you buy pork neck bones? Regular grocery store or more like a bait shop! Good luck hope you catch some:).
@@HatchingaFamily You can get them at any Walmart in about a 2 to 4 lbs package round about $6 - 8 depending on where you go. They might be large pieces so you can cut them up into small bait for more lines.
@@mrbeal2 I tried pork necks this weekend. I didn't catch anything unfortunately but im sure it wasn't because of the bait:)! It was so fished and crabbed out, tons of people. How did you do?
@@HatchingaFamily I ended up leaving with half a cooler and used one 2.5lbs package of neck-bones about 28 crabs total between 5.5 inches and 6.25 inches. If you search hard enough on youtube and you know Galveston the other videos will let you know where to go for the biggest crabs. Behind Home Depot right off the 45 freeway as you enter into Galveston is a good location. I catch mine at the number 8 exit right on 45 anywhere along the feeder I call it the Spot because that is what is advertised on the billboard right before the exit. Also right at the first boat launch on the dyke with crab ring nets either bait will work good at any of the locations I just mentioned. Good luck
Also across the ferry on Old French Town rd go to the Broken Bridge and crab to the right side of the road, but it has to be at high tide if not there will be very low water and few crabs.
Sleep with the wrong person and what do we have!?????
CRABSSsSSsSs 🦀 🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀
We're going to go vacationing in Galveston Texas in August. So is it okay to fish anytime of the year for crab or is there a specific time of the year? And can you recommend a specific area to do the crab fishing? Maybe give me a marker or an area for a fish for crab?
cuz I know it's not really that big of a place.
😊 Thanks
hey! Anywhere on the bay side of galveston island is pretty good. Just need calm water. I think there is a few weeks in Febuary (check the texas parks and wildlife for sure) when you can't crab. Other than that I think its okay to crab all year. Good luck out there. HOpe you catch a lot
Thanks Jared
Thanks for checking out the channel.
I recognized Blue Waters RV Park in the background.
absolutely. If I ever get an RV i'll probably stay there one day:).
@@HatchingaFamily Going there in a few weeks hope to crab in the canal while there. Where did you get the stakes? Thanks!
What location did you crab? I need a spot
Galveston Island west end. However anywhere on the bay side of galveston island I feel like is good:)
Hey sorry I didn't see your message until today. I got them at the walmart near Freeport!
Know that this is an old video but can you tell me the area you are crabbing? We are inland and never been to the Texas coast.
Great video! I also live in Houston and planning to head down in the next few days and try to catch some. What were those stakes you had? Were the crabs still alive when you cleaned them? Do you have to have a license? Thx!
Good vid dude
Glad you enjoyed. Thank you!
Hi. Thanks for the video. Would you let me know the exact locatio? Is that galveston beach?
Hey It is Near San Louis pass. Be careful of the water currents, it is known to be a dangerous spot.
we hose off the insides instead of picking them out. saves some time if you have more than one person to do an assembly line :)
Thats a really good Idea thank you. A nice high pressure hose would clean that stuff out super easy.
My dad does the same thing and takes us to the beach once in a while
Awesome. A great family activty.
Dude thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Great Video! Nice to see the kiddos having fun.
Do you, or anyone watching this, know anything about catching these delicacies near the JFK Memorial Causeway southeast of Corpus near "Snoopy's"?
I am a transplanted MD'er who married a Texan. I would love to teach my grand kiddos crabbing.
I miss the weekly crab feasts my uncle is famous for in MD.
Thanks
Thanks for the comment! I am a transplant to Texas as well so I know the feeling. Take the grandkids they will love it. I don't know anything about crabbing in that area but I would say it is easier to crab in areas without a surf. Sorry I couldn't be of more help! Good luck and let me know how it goes.
The crabs are everywhere on the Texas coast including JFK causeway. I have had better luck catching them in darker water areas. So many Drum and Redfish in the area that eat them makes them harder to come by. Areas near marsh or grass gives them a better chance of survival, and improves your chances.
I tie beeflung to a flat stone
Save the carcus. Use it in a soup stock. Yum!
I love free gear ..
So exactly were you crabbing being able to walk in the water to catch these crabs. I assume you can get close to this location by car and how do you get to this location after you stop with your car. Can you walk to the location after getting out of your car? If I can see the location on a map, that would be awesome. Thanks again for the video.
Great video! Where in Galveston did you go? We want to take the kids but avoid really rocky places.
West end of Galveston Island! Careful of the tides. They can be dangerous. Not a good place to swim.
Learned how to crab up north from my grandparents. Never seen that method though. In Dallas and coming down to Galveston in Oct for the bull red run. I'll give that a shot. We clean and cook them diff as well. More of the old school way. Do you by any chance know if the crabbing is good in Oct?
I don't know!! I have gone in september before and it was just fine so I bet you can still find some! HOw do you cook them?
Where's exactly the place in the video you are filming? Could you please tell me location of it... thanks a lot
What part of Galveston are you crabbing how can I get to that exact location I think it’s perfect for my boys to catch.
Hey I don't have an exact location for you but its on the west end of Galveston Island:). We always try on the Bay side. Good luck!
Where exactly did you go to catch crabs? I have been all over port isabel and south padre. I understand they do not like to come out in the winter. What month did you make this video?
I made the video in august! I think you can catch them pretty much all year round however November-march is a little slower I think!
Does the ice flash freeze them? Or do they die without water? The nearest ocean is 1500 miles away so I’m pretty ignorant on ocean life.
Good question! From what I understand Its important to not clean/cook crab that has been dead for a while, because it spoils the meat. So what I do is put them on ice to slow their metabolism down, and allow them to stay alive while I drive home. Then I clean them in that state of lethargy. I'm still learning, but its a fun hobby. They will die without water but that take awhile for blue crabs.
Best way to tell the difference of blue crabs is males think of the Washington Monument, females think of the U.S. Capital building
🦀🦀🦀😎👍
haha nice! I like that. Easier way to say it.
If u can and would would u share areas where to go crabing with kids kids love crabing. Nice video where are those stakes from . I never knew about the red and blue never realy paid attention to that . Nice to know
Hey Javier! This video was on the bay side of Galveston Island. I got the stakes from Walmart in Lake Jackson TX but I have seen them at various Walmarts. Good luck to you and I hope you catch some:).
Where are you fishing at in Galveston? We are visiting in 2 months and wanna catch some crabs too!
Hey sam! This is near the western end of Galveston island! On the bay side
Thank you, Jared! We are super stoked to try n catch some crabs! We'll have to keep you updated on our crab fishing! Loved your video btw!
What's the best time of year to go crabbing in Galveston?
Good question! I have some friends who say October is the best time to go around here! This video was taken back in August. Honestly probably can't go wrong late spring to fall!
Where in Galveston were u at?
Near the southern tip. Be careful of the currents and stay close to shore!
Western tip.
I tried catching the crab this season but only caught 4 inchers
Hey man where in Galveston is best for crabbing?
This is near San Luis pass. Be careful of the current it can be dangerous. I also like areas out towards Surfside. Honestly they are all over. It's easier on the bay side, too much surf and it's hard to catch them
Were you guys in Galveston?
Great advice thank you:). I saved your comment and I'm going to give that all a try. Chesapeake bay is the real deal. I would love to go crabbing up there some day. Thanks for your comment and for watching.
Lovely video. Do you know where to get a net like that?
haha I found that one on the side of the road. I've Seen similar ones at walmart, or Bass pro shop.
Hey where was this? Like what beach? Everyone in Galveston I go there’s too many waves
Bay side doesn't have near the waves! Just be careful
Great video. Where is the exact location in this video? what exit? I would like to try it out
Where is the place and what month
August. Western end of Galveston island
🥇👍👍👍
Thank you!
thanks for the video Jared, we are looking to get into harvesting Blue Crab, we saw a few videos of the Crab emitting worms when cooked, is that a common occurrence or rare? Thanks Blu 🌸
Great question. I really dont know. I ate undercooked crabs from galveston once and got very sick. I would make sure they are well cooked but I don't know about the worms.
@@HatchingaFamily thanks for the followup Jared 🥂
@@urbanlovesrural of course! Good luck out there:)
Where in Galveston was this
Where is this in Galveston? Where exactly. Thanks
Where are you at in the video me and my friends are trying to go out crabbing in a few days
West end of Galveston island. bay side. Gulf side is a little rough (too many waves)
So you just randomly slam the net in the water and catch them, or by the bait?
On top of the bait. I scoop the bait up when I bring the net down. Crabs are eating on the bait.
@@HatchingaFamily Got it
Where in Galveston did you go to catch crab!? I haven't been having any luck anywhere.
Were you down near Galveston or west of there? I live out towards Katy and would love to take my son to try this technique
Good luck! Let me know how it goes with your son. West end of Galveston Island
Wow I really want to know where exactly this is. My family overseas love crabbing and they are coming in May so I want to take them somewhere they can really catch some not just one or two. Can you let me know how to get to the place in the video?
Where is this at? Bet it’s good for floundering
Near the western end of galveston island. Be careful, a dangerous area to walk off shore.
You are allowed a few undersize crabs for bait. Want to say 4?
Loved the video and want to give it a try with my kids. I have no idea how to start, could you please send the location where you were at? Will let you know as soon as we try how it did go. thanks@
Good luck with the kids! DOn't have an exact location it was years ago. Galveston island, bay side. Be careful of tides and drop offs. Best of luck.
How long are the metal stakes. Are they bought or homemade. Thanks.
Hey they are about 2 feet in length and I bought them at walmart:)
@@HatchingaFamily Blessings.Thank you.
How many strings can you put it out? Is there a limit with the strings?
Good question. The tpwd.texas.gov has a good website and information about rules and regulations on blue crab. Nothing about a limit on how many strings as far as I can tell but I'm not positive there could be a rule I don't know about
@@HatchingaFamily Sir is the do not consume order still in affect?
@@mikemayyou2909 I wish I knew! I'm a little out of the loop because of the COVID-19.... I didn't know we had a do not consume order right now.
Where do u get the string from
Poor net but nice catch
Yes!! Not the greatest net for sure. Thank you!
Is 4x4 needed for that bay side of San Luis pass
That near San Luis Pass?
yes! Super close to it
How you get to the place you catch crabs?
Anywhere on the bay side of Galveston bay is good crabbing I think. Just need calm water and a safe place to put your bait out.

In the water!!! 😂😂😂
Anywhere the water is calm. I like the bay side of Galveston Island:). Crabs are everwhere, just need it to be calm water so you can catch them.
