Growing up black and gay in 80’s I felt like a freak. Then I saw Toyah on TOTP and it was like wow!! She literally saved my life it was like it’s ok to look different and be out there and be loud. I even bleached my 15 year old Afro in honour and proudly showed my mum which didn’t go well. She cut it all off but weirdly kept in a glass in her China cabinet until she died I think she was secretly impressed!
Be Loud be Proud be Heard. Thank you TOYAH 🤘🤘

The world would be a very boring place if god made us all the same. Be proud of who you are today and don't let anyone tell you differently, skin colour and if your gay whatever should not matter, we are all human and still have feelings. stay safe my friend and keep going forward don't look back, you can't change the past.

I can see where your mum was coming from - she wanted to keep you out of trouble and black people (never mind gay ones) cannot afford to draw to much attention to themselves, then as now alas. At the same time it broke her heart so she kept it.

I remember the 80's growing up with fondness in the UK the music and looks were all over the place rock, hip hop, pop, dark wave (later goth) new romantics, mods etc and there was more make up being worn than any time.

This was my Aunt Sheryl's favorite song. When I was young, she would dance around our kitchen singing it into her broom and, when my embarrassed Uncle would tell her to stop, she would say "You only live once". She died in 2018 and I think about her every single day.

OMG!! This was in the charts the year I left school. It was the one that I loved. I was never really into punk rocker theme or fashion but I did love a few songs and this one is one of them. I loved the pink hair too back then but was never allowed to dye my hair so once I grew up and left home and got my own place, boy did I rebel and dyed my hair 🤣😂 wore my make up heavy and bright and wore crazy fashions but it was the mid 80s and I enjoyed living my life back then.

Her, Siouxsie Su, Hazel O'Connor, oh, and Clannad too with that ROS song-when I hear their songs it transports me back to being a little kid again instantly. A sure sign of old age, (though I don't feel it!) is thinking that a lot of them back in the day seemed to be more 'real' and to have a lot more energy than young 'uns today! : )

The Theatre Royal, also known as "Drury Lane" (facing Catherine St. and backing onto Drury Lane), the oldest theatre site in London still in use, first opened 2 years before the Great Plaque of 1665, survived the Great Fire of London unscathed, in its present form opened in 1812.

It amazes me now, when I look in the mirror, how many times I was asked fo my autograph by people who thought I was Toyah, because I certainly don't look anything like her now! Oh! My lost youth! 😢

17 when I first saw Toyah. I kinda think that all my life I’ve been looking for a woman like her.

It's a mystery - I knew the track but it wasn't until I heard it as the bed track on Mark and Lard's show on Radio1 way back in the late 90's / early 2000's I really fell in love with the track.

I went to see Crass in Liverpool. Must have been 1982. Singer in a support band had a mass of orange hair. Crowd were chanting Toyah Toyah. Singer kept shouting back 'I'm not, I'm not'. I asked someone 'what's the gag? Who's Toyah '. I had no clue...
