- Hello everyone, I'm happy to give you (finally) How to Speedrun Anything Episode 2: Portal!
Hopefully Episode 3 won't take as long as the gap between 1 and 2. Right now, I'm probably aiming for a February release because I'm going to be moving and the like, so won't be around too much to learn a new game and make the video on it. As always, recommendations are appreciated!

Never thought about speedrunning but now I feel like I have to

why am i replying to a comment, that is 8 month old. have i managed to put myself in a position where i feel so hopeless and i alone, that i feel the need to reply to 8 month old comments. by using the 'same' word, i imply that i am - in fact - relating to this current sentence. but... why would i do this...? the like button is designed to imply that you relate with the comment, or simply put... like it. then why would i reply to this comment with me being the only commenter? does this make me feel special? i am aware of this, but simply - i like it. i'll live the next 5 minutes in an illusion.

Felt like I needed to come on here and thank you. I started speedrunning Portal the day before this video came out and at the time I didn't know any strats. After watching, I started doing actual runs and, more importantly, joined the Discord server. Fast forward 6-7 months and I have improved greatly, having a top 10 time (16:25), and have met some amazing people in the community, so thank you so much for introducing me to one of the best communities in speedrunning

im a speedrunner myself, and i can confirm that this tutorial was pretty useful
I just want to document i speedran portal independently for a while without lookjng at any strats. My best time, (including loads) is 26:40. I expected to be mind blown by this video but its not too bad
Once I was practicing my speedrunning and Glados pissed me off in chamber 9 by not opening the doors even when I had both cubes on the buttons... fu glados
Youu could just do \bind q "incrementvar sv_player_funnel_into_portals 0 1 1"/ which just press one button to turn on and press again to turn it off and great video as well mate!
This is great! One thing, I wish the explanations were a bit more in depth, since some parts were just like "just do it like normal" or whatever, but I was mostly able to figure it out. Thanks!
Appreciate the feedback! I'm working on balancing in-depth explanations and what to skip over to make the tutorials a better experience, and will keep this in mind :)

nice vid, I didn't use the tutorial but when I saw it (like march 2020) I thought it was cool, then I saw krinios's portal video and started speedrunning, and this is one of the reasons I wanted to run it.

Do not forget to place your portals ON your buttons
of course, place the portal on the button and put the blue cube on the wall where it's supposed to go
Its a good video. But one thing that Id personally find helpful and really the hardest part for me is setting up all the files and stuff. Like getting the recorder and the livesplits. Like I essentially dont know where to put them. I guess I just need my hand held a little more in the setup part. But overall great video, keep up the good work.
Understood, I'm going to be making another series in the future that'll cover all of the "getting started" things like setting up livesplit and other files. Would rather do it this way than painfully explain it every single video, so keep an eye out for that!
swc19 oh wow that is really cool. I figured out most of the installation things from the “Portal Speedrun Guide” but as someone who wants to suck his friends into this community it’ll be nice to just show them the getting started video. Keep up the great videos.
This video is great, but there are a couple of points you missed that can improve time, like placing a portal next to the door in a couple of rooms instead of walking to it (chamber 2 and 4 for example).
He did mention it? He just said doing it quickly can however be disorienting

Just got a 26:10, if I didn’t do so abysmally in chamber 18, the escape sequence, and the glados fight, I could’ve easily gotten sub 24, this is probably my favorite speed game, only second to Mario 64
The file for the vault save wasn't found, would be appreciated if I could get an updated one.

The strat u used in chameber 8 was so harddddddd. I could never do it pls help. Whenever i jump on panel and jump again it is so slow dat i have to jump again and still it never reaches the bar thing. Also half the time my character bumps her head on the portal and doesnt jump on the panel too hard
10:55 i found it much easier just to go backwards instead of doing a 180
cause its glitchless you cant go backwards and bunny hop cause its classed as a glitch cause it gives you a speedboost

I need help, in escape 2 after shooting the portal onto the top half of the black tile and flinging thru, I always hit the back wall, 3ven when holding backwards, and then land on a door that is opening to one of the turrets, killing my speed so I have to jump down again the then fling up to the catwalk. How do you stop in the middle of the room after the slanted black tile fling?
Did my first full run, many mistakes but I ALMOST got a sub 30, I messed up on the last core and accidentally hit my load quick button which was at the start of the fight 💀 so I got a 31:46

19:20 whenever I go through the portal on the ground, it always launches me way too far and i hit the back wall, instead of landing in the middle of the room like you did, do you know what I'm doing wrong?
you might need to hold back while flying, or you might be placing a portal on the part of the platform that isn't angled.
In Escape 01, why does the turret have to remain standing?
It's cause you need it standing to shoot the glass in the room after the one the turret's in, if you're not going for it then no need to worry.
I followed all the instructions in the README of the demo autorecorder and in the console it says Unable to load plugin "speedrun_demorecord-2013.dll"
What do I do?
If you're using the Source Unpack version of Portal, you should only need the 2007 demorecord dll, otherwise you'll need to install the 2013 dll manually, instructions should be in the demo recorder's README or the big route document linked in the description.
for chamber 17 id argue portal bumping is easier and less time consuming but i could be wrong
definitely is, but portal bumping through solid objects is banned in glitchless.

Practicing and I place a blue portal on the wall
I accidentally replace my portal and now there are 2 blue portals on the fucking wall

probably because you don't own portal on steam, just buy it

I believe you just hold back in the air - you won't get as much momentum. Timing might be a little annoying cause you'll need to hold it right as you leave the angled portal as well.

in chamber 9 you can shot a Portal under the door and get throught it. It's also cheating?

Make sure you're holding crouch, and try jumping a bit later than you have been.

for what? for livesplit just google, for splits just make them yourself or go to www.speedrun.com/Portal/resources and get the "Portal Splits"

@@Astralinksz Back then I didn't know it was called a vent fling, now I do it every time first try, lol
When does a still alive speedrun start and stop, because you have no crosshair without the portal gun, and the cursor doesn't go away when you beat glados, even in the cutscene where your outside.
Not sure, would be best to check the rules for the run for more info on that.
