- Hey everybody, another zeror✨
More info!
If you want to connect Instagram is a great place! Find me @stella.hikes I try my best to respond to DMs :)
And if you want to support me on the AT and the creation of these videos you can
Venmo @Stella-Blashock
and I’ll send you a post card from the trail!
Massive thank you to those already supporting me on the AT regardless of how- financially, following along, sharing, and commenting! 💗
10% of YT earnings this year will go back to trail orgs like the ATC, PCTC, and the CDTC 🌲🏔️✨ Thank you for your support and encouragement! Let’s get outside and into the mountains together 💞
Girllllll….you were frozen!!! You absolutely did the right thing getting off trail. It was a very dangerous situation.
Also you are one of the earlier hikers and weather is a part of that. No worries, let it flow and make smart decisions.
Brrrrrrrr
It’s ok it’s not a race it’s an adventure and it’s your adventure so live it the way you want to!
Just about to comment the same, my twist is there's no "there" there. "Ithaca gave you the marvelous journey"
Don't worry about daily mileage, remember, it's the journey not the destination!
@@Jim-wi7jeok
This trail is teaching you a lot. Dogs are great, it's ok to slow down 🙂
I love that you have goals for yourself that motivate and push you! Give yourself grace when unexpected events like bad weather prevent you from reaching them. You’ll also have days when you’ll surpass your expectations!
❤️
Stay safe and take your time! Stop and smell the roses🥰💗
Its a blessing to have the time, the means, and good health to do what you are doing. So embrace everything the trail gives you with joy.
I admire your tenacity. Even on your zero, you're out and about and getting things done. 😊 I love the intro music to your vidz. It's Stella-vator music. You're doing amazing. ✌️
it seems like you're crushing it to me. your miles are amazing! Feet forward, be proud and happy. Time off trail, zeros and bad weather will all be a part of it.
Girl, you are really hard on yourself. The trail will always be there.
100%
Everyone behind you is going through the same thing. Everyone went off trail. If you feel something is dangerous it probably is.
And you are an athlete so if going hard makes you happy, do it! But be safe first!
I wish you wouldn’t beat yourself up. You are doing amazing and from what I’ve seen in the past you definitely have made the right decision. Hypothermia is no joke. Be easy on yourself and enjoy each day as it comes. 🙏
Not doing the miles and feeling "productive" can make us feel "less than", not worthy, and not valuable. Feeling valued = feeling loved.
Your decision to get off trail was an important physical health safety call. Kudos! The struggle is reconciling it with your emotional health need to feel valuable by "producing" and "doing". Live to hike another day. You matter and have 10K+ followers who love you!
Girl, I was born and raised 2 hours south of Orlando. I bundle up when it hits 70 degrees! I am SO cold intolerant - which is why I’m watching you from my couch, totally supportive of you staying off trail in bad weather conditions. When I take my little grandchildren on simple hikes in the woods, I preach to them SAFETY FIRST. Listen to your gut. You made a wise choice. You are still the baddest badass ever!
Sometimes, Stella, you are too hard on yourself. You're allowed to take some zeros, especially if dangerous weather conditions call for it. You made the right choice!
Don't be hard on yourself. Every hike is different. Things do not always go as planned. You can't control the weather. Safety is more important. It's not a race. You are doing amazing 🌻🌻
Good to plan and be flexible! Looking Good! Looking Strong!
Some folks had to be rescued from the trail near Damascus yesterday. Don’t get down. It’s bad weather sometimes up into April around here. Hang in there!
The weather will eventually improve. You don't want to get to New England too soon anyway. May is mud season in Vermud (we're talking ankle to knee deep mud here) and slushy/icy snow season in NH. We got a lot of late season snow here in the White mountains and Maine got even more. River fords in Maine will be running high and cold well into June. Something to look forward to 😵💫
Absolutely, and more of the white stuff coming this weekend
Bring safe is primary focus. Being out there, on top of a mountain frozen, gear frozen and no way out for miles...not safe. You 100% made the right decision. Don't second guess that. Could you imagine if you had Tali, omg you both would be in a dangerous situation. You are smart and experienced go with your gut. Who cares about what anyone thinks. Be safe always. You will get the miles very quickly and fly. You're amazing, don't be so hard on yourself. You're doing awesome.😊
Stella, I understand that you pushing yourself, setting goals, making big mileage every day - those are the things that give you personal satisfaction. But give yourself some grace - you saved, and found the joys of, a dog - which I am pretty sure will be one of THE most memorable times about your AT thru-hike - not the number of days you took to do the whole trail. On top of that, the weather conditions have not been conducive to being out there on the trail - completely beyond your control and you made the smart choice. Finally, and I know you know this already, you have the health, time, means in which to pursue this adventure, which many will never be able to due to many different circumstances. I know you've made sacrifices to be here, but there are some that couldn't, no matter how much they sacrificed. You are doing fantastic - don't forget that! 🙂
You absolutely did the right thing by bailing. Warmer weather is on the way. Don’t worry about the miles. You are doing better than most. I see you finishing in 120 days
Hi Stella, I hope you have time to answer a question: How did you manage to NOT get frost bite on you feet? This might be a good time to do a "what's in my pack" review, especially around clothing and your new shoes. It seems some of use could learn from you cold weather experience. Best wishes.
You definitely did the right thing. You’re crushing it. It’s good to listen to your gut feeling. It’s not worth risking your life to be a few days ahead. By the way love your videos!
Ease up on yourself! There are valuable lessons learned in every experience.
Good job, I’m sure you will be a top NOBO finisher. I’ve seen your previous work❤
Staying off trail when there is freezing rain is a solid plan. Widowmaker Branches with ice on them fall way more easily than branches without ice. The littlest bit of wind sends them tumbling. You made a great call. As others have called out- the northeast isn’t having a super Sunny spring. You’ve got a lot of mucky hiking ahead of you. Nothing to rush for.
Stella! You are amazing! Don’t overthink it. You are kicking butt and don’t need to fly through it. Enjoy the time spent in the mountains. You will miss it once you’re done.
I hope you find your rhythm within the rhythm of life. Take good care of yourself. Keep trekking. 😀
Enjoy your hike. It is not a.competition. Be safe.
I don’t know much about the CDT yet (hiking it this summer) but I do know the AT and it isn’t the CDT. Best not to compare mileage. The AT is harder than most give it credit for and early season weather can be dangerous. Stay safe and warm 😊. Love your videos ❤
You are obviously someone who thrives best on a well planned experience. I think you are wise to get back to the trail with your new boots and resupply! Blessings, girl🙏🏻
Your doing awesome, that weather was really bad and you needed to be out of it. Happy Hiking 🏕🥾💞
You have plenty of time! In fact taking extra rest days is just going to give your body time to recover and gain strength, which will make future hiking easier.
You don't have to burn through miles day after day. Enjoy the short days and Nothing wrong in slowing down. You don't have to push yourself to the point of injury. Love the videos by the way.
Stay safe. It doesn't matter if you take a zero or 5 as long as you keep going. Don't put yourself in a box. Just hike you own hike and enjoy it
Don't be hard on yourself, you can't control the weather. ⛈🌨 Try not to compare the CDT to the AT two totally different things. Both trails bring their own unique challenges.
Goretex insulated gloves, merino wool socks, decent hiking boots , get a few warmer items and you'll be good for next time. Don't stress 💪
Remember that in a few months you will be back at work, longing for your trail days. The longer it takes, the more of them you will have.
Enjoy while you are out there, you won't be out there forever.
Don’t get discouraged about your miles. Many hikers find the AT to be the hardest of the big three.
Good decision, go with what feels right!!
You are doing great ! You just can't control things you can't control - enjoy the adventure !
I think the ATC building is like brand new.
Okay, I am going to share the name Scott Beneroffe (Aquaman) with you. He hiked the AT last year SOBO starting at Katadin in December. He was hiking the presidentials in horrific winds and snow using snow shoes. Going around and over blow downs making his own path as the trail wasn’t visible. Even he did not hike in freezing rain. That is the most dangerous weather and you did the right thing getting off trail.
Sorry to see you and Tally part. You're doing great, with the miles. Already in Virginia. My first 20+ mile day was in Virginia. Without planning it. I did 25 miles, out of Grayson Highlands. I couldn't find a suitable stealth tenting site. 😀
Don’t sweat it, Stella. You’ll make it up. It’s not a race or a contest. One day, a bit farther north, you’ll be saying, “aaargh, it’s sooh hot”! LOL
You are doing amazing, I am sure you will complete the trail in a great time even with a few 0 days. You hike in conditions most people don't. 😊
There is a pattern to hiking.
The beginning when you are trying to find your pace. The distance remaining makes you question can you do it mixed with excitement of what lies ahead.
The middle where you settle in and are driven to get the miles in.
Then the realization the end is near where you just dream of being done; of food, the hot bath/shower, or simply sleep.
Then the moments before the end where you begin to feel the excitement of reaching your goal mixed with regrets that you may not have another day on the trail.
I think this happens whether you are hiking 25 in a day or 2200 in 5 months.
I think your doing the right thing. And you get to enjoy the trail towns every time you get to one, Its all part of the experience right. Damascus right. Very cool. 👍🌲
As a viewer, I like slow because we get to watch you longer. It’s not a race that you have to win. You aren’t in competition with anyone.
Enjoy yourself you’ve already saved a puppy and no need to suffer. We enjoy watching you travel and do it for yourself and experience. Hope you don’t get offended but eat more nuts n oils to keep you warm😊 ❤ we’ll be watching. 🖐🏽also you’ve done so much already 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
You got what's known as 'The Virginia Blues' . . . A long state, 450 miles . . . agrivatingly slow.
You made the right choice. If you can't maintain body warmth, it could've become dangerous. As others have said, it's not a race, pace yourself and enjoy the scenery. It would be a shame to speed through and miss the journey. Patience.
Set a good example for less experienced hikers by avoiding dangerous conditions. You are actually teaching others as they study your videos. Be sure you are teaching the right way to thru hike.
Warm is on the way, I'll be section hiking the AT Sunday/Monday from Fox Creek southbound. We may pass each other. I'll say hi.
You sure don't have to explain yourself to me and hopefully to anyone here. With all your hiking experience, I think most of us trust you when you say it seems dangerous out there. Stay safe!
Totally understandable. It's your A.T.
A good decision to be in a warm place on the frigid days. You'll make up the miles. Lots of hiking yet. Safe hiking!
You were literally covered in ice before you got off trail! Stay safe and enjoy your zero days, you can do high mile days when you're back on trail. You're doing amazing! :)
New trail name, Zero. Lol. One sunny day and you'll forget about all this. You're probably already back on trail and crushing it.
Bought broccoli slaw the other day for the 1st time all because of you! I just had to try it! Absolutely LOVE IT!
Priority is staying warm, and safe. Even 8 miles is a lot, and your doing great!
Don’t be hard on yourself. Your health and safety are the most important things. The trail will always be there. Get all the information you can so you can make a wise decision that is best for you. Don’t worry about what others are doing or saying. You do what’s best for you.
Wuether's originals! My favs! Glad you got hightops for this section's weather.
Keep safe..At least it's not hot..You'll really enjoy it...Giles County a blast...There's trails everywhere
Stella your dressed for thru hiking. The conditions you were in required full winter attire. You can be in that kind of weather and have a great time, it’s very exhilarating, but you have to be dressed for it. There’s no way you can carry all that gear. It was a good lesson for you, you just learned the limitations of your gear. You passed the test. You realized it and turned around. Your a smart woman!
Enjoy the zeros! I'm sure you'll be able to do useful things and enjoy some R&R before hitting the trail again.
With your ability to endure big mile days, I'm betting you'll get through the Shennies in 4 days, average 30's through MD, PA, NJ, and then probably mid 20's until you get to the Whites. No need to beat yourself up now. Plenty of opportunities for big miles ahead!
Yeah, it seems like she's got this huge reserve capacity to make up big miles. 500 miles in 30 days? even with all the distractions that puts her in line with the fast hikers like Em, Sara or Spotter, do the whole thing ~ 120 days.
Goo d choice on the zero, we did the AT starting in feb.... We froze and we were able to tough it thru, but we were miserable alot... Take your time out when you can and enjoy the comfort... I'm sure you will be right back out there ...
I think it would be better if I start later than you did whenever I am able to hit the trail.
Hang in you are a trouper and the weather will change you got this 👍
“The only thing constant is change”
That includes the weather, it changed not in your favour, but hey, perhaps those mountains needed the precipitation it brought.
Happy Thawed-Out Trails! 😅 🚶🏽♀️👍🏻🙂
That weather was dangerous where you were but if you had weather like that in the Whites or in Maine it would be downright life threatening. You made the right decision. Unless you have a firm date that you must finish by don’t worry about the zeros. Good luck and happy trails!
So is the ATC passing out awards for the fastest hikers now? I am so impressed by your discipline and enthusiasm. I look forward every day to watching your videos. But I think you might be missing the whole point of being on trail. You have had such a fulfilling journey so far. Maybe it cost you a few miles. So what! You had a beautiful experience, told a fun story and made a bunch of us smile, laugh and cry along the way. Hike on, but embrace the journey - not the miles!
We have had serious, lousy weather these last few weeks..no excuses. Wish you would redo Grayson Highlands on a nice day. The ponies are so special..same with McAffee Know..need a nice day for that.
No excuses needed...just gear up for the cold..good gloves.
You may be ahead of most hikers..if you want company, seek them out. They are mostly kind.
The original Werthers❤ relax n enjoy yourself today.
You're a stronger willed person than me by talking to the camera instead of eating. If it was me, I would have dived into that bowl similar to the way Tally would have.
511.9 - Total miles fm Amicalola Falls
0 - Miles for day 30
16.7 - Avg. miles per day
18.3 - Avg. miles per day less the 3 zero days
Jun 21 - Estimated Katahdin summit date
no worry
You're making smart choices
Da Breeze
It’s supposed to warm up here, now. You’ll be back on trail soon.
You can do it!
Go get a run. You're missing the aerobic and having a down. It will be ok. Hang in there. Some zeros are ok. Your pace is still really good!
Hey there Nyx, I agree with MsConner02 100%. The Grayson Highlands and arctic weather is a bad mix. I know you are further ahead than this video so just keep hiking the way your body and the weather feels and dictates, Deacon 98
It's better to decide to come off the trail and regroup resupply then trudgeon and possibly meet absolute disaster, my opinion is you made the right and soon you'll be back on the trail
Why does every day need to be 20+ days ? Are you trying to complete the AT in under 100 days? If so, let us know so we can cheer you in.
Interesting that there are no hikers hanging around in Damascus - the most storied hiking town in the AT. Come back in 2 months it will be filthy with hikers.
you started way early in the year these sort of weather set backs should be expected also the AT is a lot more ups and downs than the CDT
do not feel bad due to conditions which you have no control. anyway you'll be in Maine too early and have to deal with mosquitoes
Mt. Everest Summit Suits are under $1500.00. Just saying.😁
Maybe this is the lesson the AT has for you. Slow down and be in the moment
You was cover in ice, that's dangerous! Good Luck.
Seems like you have some doubts about your choices? Or some regret? All I can say is if either of those are the case stop "shoulding" on yourself and know in your heart that your pace is still truly amazing.. Yes the trail ahead will produce all kinds of challenges but i think it is safe to say you will work it like a boss because your pace was and still is truly amazing.
I dunno, I think she's just a super analyzer so you're just hearing all the internal arguments. she seems to make the correct decisions though, get rid of the dog, get off trail here, just one of those people that even when the decision's been made and done she still goes back over things and analyzes them...again.
@@TheJhtlagfighting herself 😮
Yeah chill … you’ve done 500 within 30 days….slow down meet & hike with other hikers …it’s not the destination it’s the experience & hopefully connecting.Good luck & werthers for the win.Would have been nice to see the gear you purchased
Go to The Fiddle
C'mon, it's just a trail . . . isn't it? It's there to enjoy, not rail against . . . I know, easier said than done . . . It all seems so incredibly important, out there . . . but, it goes away guickly, when over . . . enjoy it, forget the miles, just finish . . . you can think abou it all,the rest of your life . . . this a year later!😊.
Don't quit on a bad day...
Wait your not camping?
Wtf is the point 😂
You’re hauling butt! Maybe everything is telling you that you can’t continue without Tally! Go visit Tally and volunteer at the shelter if you can. Let the weather clear up and enjoy what you can!
Perfect time to find a harness for Tally that helps to prevent him from pulling and for you to get a longer leash. You’re excitement and high spirits with Tally was amazing!
Tally and the weather are slowing you down because you're missing life while rushing through it. It's like watching someone running away from themselves.
Call me a grizzled old sceptic but the weather and a stray dog are not conspiring to force a hiker to hike fewer miles. Stella's great but she's not inflict-winter-storm-on-an-entire-country-great.
The dog is long gone..slow diwn if you want to meet more hikers, maybe. Are you still way ahead of the ones behind you?
@@T.K... We used to take the interstate highway to our cabin in the mountains every other weekend, playing hurry up and wait while cussing the traffic. One day we decided to slow down and take the curvy back roads. The trip was only an hour longer, even though we stopped at several places along the way. We ended up making a few life long friends taking that detour, and often ended up staying with them, never even making it to our cabin. The traffic on the interstate wasn't made for us, just like the storm isn't for anyone in particular. You can stand at the door all day cussing the weather, or you can spend the day building a fire and inviting over family and friends. Which day will you remember fondly? Which day fills your soul? Nothing slows you down unless you're rushing.
@@spuriouseffect That's an awesome perspective, I appreciate the comment. I definitely understand where you are coming from now but I also appreciate that people have to be true to themselves in the moment. Some days the road less traveled is preferred but not always. Either way is fine if you're true to yourself.
@@T.K... She's disappointed every day when she doesn't see people on trail or at the shelters. I guess her need for companionship is less important than having to be disappointed with herself for not going fast enough.
923k... CLOSE‼️❕⚠️. & all earned az well
SorryStella but more and more I am not understanding this obsession with 25 mile days. Everyone is in the same situation on the trail right now challenging weather. Should you be on another trail perhaps? Good time to journal and reflect on why you need to be moving through at such a high pace, not connecting with other hikers and not smelling the roses.
I don't know, there's always a trade-off between doing things and going fast. You probably need to do 15m/day to get it done on the other hand, I admire people who do stuff along the way, heck, take the downhill bike ride on the Va Creeper trail there in Damascus. But then again, you can't do to much stuff or you'll never make it. Just got to balance things. I'm kinda thinking though she likes the logistical challenge of the trail, what to do and when to do it is like a big game to her.
She has the right to hike the trail in any way she wants. This is somebody who has already done MULTIPLE thru-hikes, and is clearly an endurance-minded athlete who would like to use this trail to attempt some physical challenges.
People come to the AT for different things. Her reasons are just as valid as those who come out to make new friends and "smell the roses". People gave the same critique to Taylor (Nahamsha hiker) constantly and she enjoyed her thru so much she is doing it again.
If you aren't connecting with her videos or her hiking goals....just move on. There are literally dozens of other people currently posting their thru hikes on RUclips e
@@teaandcakeordeath woah! I was simply expressing concern!!!
