- We analysed the RGB parade scope of Red Dead Redemption 2 using 4K HDR screenshots from the Xbox One X console, and concluded that RDR2's HDR video output is basically just upscaled from SDR. Although not tested by ourselves, the same issue is present on the Playstation 4 (PS4) Pro version too.
Because the Red Dead Redemption 2's HDR rendition usually results in a picture that is either too dim, or bright enough but too washed out because of elevated black level and midtones issues, we recommend that you play the game in SDR (standard dynamic range) to get the best picture quality.

This isn't about how well the game is doing. It's about transparency from the company that made the game, to simply be honest during development of their game, as well as finding a solution to it. Just because it sold extremely well and has earned abundant praise from pretty much everyone, doesn't mean we should just disregard the issue, no matter how minor it is to other people. There are enthusiasts who invested time and resources on T.Vs and consoles capable of running HDR, in order for them to experience the great game at its absolute best quality. I honestly wouldn't have known about this have I not came across this video. Very useful indeed so he earned my like and subscription. Thanks for sharing OP.
you and the 2 other people who have an issue with this can just return the game. if you REALLY cared about it you would only by the games that meet your standards.

Its a feature that have been advertised so people have the right to complain if it's not correctly executed. Intelligent people are patient and can wait until the problem is fixed to get a better experience.

I spent so much time messing around with my TV settings because I knew from day 1 that the game was looking way too washed out. I have a 55' Sony Bravia 4k UHD screen, and none of my other HDR games look as washed as RD2 does. Once I turned off the HDR 10 setting on my X One X, the difference was jaw dropping!

A lot of people aren't doing hdr well. I see it in 4k blurays,4k HDR streams of movies and TV shows and games. But when it is done well it's really beautiful. The HDR in god of war is amazing.

exactly. I have been suspicious about this the first time I started this game. And the subtitles look super bright in HDR mode, suggesting a poor tone mapping solution.
The subtitles end up at the exact brightness you choose in the setting screen. Not great if you've set it to 500. The intro titles look silly

jesse baker I never played Horizon Zero Dawn in HDR sadly but it still looked good on my standard PS4. 😬 Turning HDR off on Red Dead 2 has now completely transformed it. Miles better and proper night skys 😬
I have the same tv as you 75 inch X90F. I too was pissed with HDR but I found SDR to have way better colour but much rougher edges. I played around with the settings and settled on HDR using vivid mode rather than game mode. I adjusted the contrast and brightness and a few other tweaks and got it looking much bette than when I first loaded it up. I think it looks beautiful now. It has a little haze to it but the game actually has a lot of fog in it. The clear days in the mountains look spectacular, with a little haze way off in the distance. I’m happy with it and just loving this damn game. Fishing and hunting my arse off and just exploring is a game in itself.

I have a 4 k monitor without HDR and a 4 k tv with HDR. I have played on them both and really think it looks better without HDR. The game is so incredibly good looking though.

Thx Vincent! While playing this game for around 25 hours now, I was constantly wondering why the image appeared so washed out. A search took me right to your video which explains it all! Greatly appreciated! Switched to SDR, now it looks good!
Thank you very much Vincent for your analysis on RDR2, Digital Foundry couldn't provide this deep hdr break down. It's sad to see that a big firm like Rockstar failed to deliver the true hdr experience that this game deserves on our pricey 4k hdr tv sets. A similar problem happened with Nier automata.

Its a shame really for this game. The worst implementation of checker boarding ever on ps4 and this fake HDR. Very disappointed.
xXegoplayerXx I agree, compared to the Xbox One X, the PS4 Pro looks terrible with the checkerboard rendering but Spider-Man and God of War looked INCREDIBLE on the Pro in 4K HDR. I don’t understand why RDR2 doesn’t look as great on the Pro.

Apart from the latency... if you have a 2017-18 OLED.. just setting your tv from game mode to HDR effect is massively better after some minor adjustments

Also, HDR doesn't always mean MORE color and contrast, it means more accurate color and luminance. Muted doesn't automatically mean it's wrong.

I knew it. Great to see concrete analysis of this issue. At first I thought it was just me, but the more I played, the more I thought it looked completely washed out. People kept saying it was a TV issue and not a game issue, which I knew was wrong since a I have a highly rated 2018 4K hdr tv. Forza Horizon 4, Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, etc all look amazing. RDR2 simply does not. Guess I’ll play it with HDR off.

tshaolin971 It’s a 2018 Vizio P Series Quantum. HDR looks great with all my other games that support it. That’s how I knew something was wrong with RDR2. I’m still playing it with HDR off though. Still looks good. I’ll do another playthrough if/when they patch the HDR.

Having played God of War, Spiderman and Read Dead Redemption 2. On the PS4 Pro on a Samsung 4K tv with HDR. God of War is the best looking of all three. My GOTY is God of War. Just love everything about it. Graphics, story, game mechanics, level system. It never gets slow. You're always on edge!
Facts. RDR2 had a lot of slowdown. Great game, but GOW made me by the collectors edition. I never buy those things. GOTY for real

I'm surprised that DF never commented about HDR at all in their video analysis of the game. I got the feeling from them that it just worked and was present. It seems they didn't do their work carefully, which is strange as HDR is one of the biggest developments in TV tech, even above 4k.
They did touch on it... They wven said the HDR wasn't that good. Its there but its not the best. I don't know if this was in the technical analysis or the console face off.

I swear to god just yesterday I was playing it on my PS4 Pro with my 4K HDR LG TV and said to my gf, the game isn't very bright or as colourful as I thought it would be, improved it slightly with calibration but still pretty dim. Thanks for this, now I'll disable it on this game!

Not brightness, a gamma setting.
Brightness only increases the high and midtones, without touching the absolute black-level.
Gamma raises everything including the blacks, making them gray, which is what this does.
Its literally just a Gamma slider renamed in the UI to "HDR".

I enjoy your videos and I watched most of your TV reviews to decide on a new TV in 2018.
I think it would be great if you could do these type of videos often with all major AAA game releases from both first and 3rd party studios.
I have questioned HDR a few times with certain games and it would be great for a tester like yourself with the correct equipment to tell us how it is with HDR in games.
I wonder then if true HDR is at all taxing on the gpu or processor which causes developers to give us fake versions of said features.
It's not taxing on the consoles, there are plenty of really really great HDR examples
@@EvilBoris well that's what I always thought as well, but then I guess it doesn't make sense some times as to why we aren't getting true features.
From the games I currently own I think there's only God of war, horizon, resident evil and assassin's creed that have produced results that can't be forgotten with hdr.
Then I got monster hunter as well as a few others with red dead on the horizon and I definitely feel we aren't always getting good hdr. I feel this is done more often than people realise.
I agree. Sometimes we have no clue on how to properly set the in-game calibration.
I think it may have more to do with the asset pipeline; Rockstar probably did not have HDR in mind when they started the development work some seven years ago, and as a result the original art assets were probably drawn with a narrower color range. I don’t know if there’d be a way to “naturally” extend color range of art assets better than what Rockstar is already doing here, but it may just be the unfortunate side effect of a really long development cycle, and Rockstar should offer all players an option to Xbox players to disable the fake HDR without making system-level changes.
@@LobsterJim Sure, we can't expect a revamp of their assets in 10 bit. But we can expect an update of their rage engine to manage a new eotf curve scaled on 1000 or 4000 nits HDR of brightness. I do understand why they came with this workaround because it won't be a fitness trail for sure but rather a huge headache.
SDR looks worse than HDR in my opinion. Its much closer to how rockstar used to do colors in video games. Nights arent supposed to be pitch black, in real life your eyes adjust to darkness, this is also a raster video game, and in general lgiht is not represented absolutely correctly. The fact that some blacks become grey feels intended, as it allows you to see at night in situations where its incredibly dark and high contrast (Saint denis for example). Even in its HDR mode some black accents remain, which seems to be inline on any conventional wisdom of coloring where you shouldnt overuse the most extreme values.
I feel the same way. SDR appears oversaturated and flat while HDR gives depth and texture to the picture.

There seems to be an issue with the 5.1 surround sound as well on red dead redemption 2 as for me on cut scenes or in a mission it’s 5.1 with speech from my centre speaker but when roaming around the world it goes to 4.1 as my centre speaker has no audio at all as all speech comes from my front left and right & this makes it difficult to hear anything else on the front left and right have you tested this or will you?
I don't think I've noticed this. What Audio format is your AV Receiver (if any) picking up? I don't have an Atmos Receiver, so I'm stuck with Dolby Digital+ and the centre channel seems to work during cutscenes, but again, it's something I genuinely never paid attention to, but I'll test it today and bring back results.

Lumify | Gil I have denon avrx4200 atmos av receiver I get multi ch in (linear pcm) I get full 5.1 in RDR2 in cut scenes and when on a mission but when just roaming around not on a mission it’s 4.1 no audio from centre best way to test is greet anyone and the voices come from front left and right
Martyn James glad its not just me it’s a bit gutting considering all other big titles say god of war blast out a fantastic 5.1 but on the plus side when the game is this great it’s a small issue if I have to live with then so be it but cheers for checking
I may be poor, but here's my take: Something is definitely wrong with the dialog in this game. I run all my TV/game stuff through a stereo receiver. You read that right! Non-5.1, L/R channel only...true stereo. And I've encountered this same thing: Dialog loud and up-front during cutscenes; quiet and indistinct while in play. Before you ask: Yes! I made sure to set the in-game audio to "Stereo." Furthermore, without changing that setting, but listening via earphones while sending the audio through the PS4 controller (while the wife sleeps), the same thing happens. I need to check if changing to the "Headphones" setting corrects this.
I guess my addition to the discussion is this: It's not just the 5.1 Center that's funky. It's almost certainly something wonky with the game's audio.
Me, 2 years later and playing it on PC; its still one of the best looking games I've ever played! There's also graphical mods that can adjust certain color ranges to make the game look better. Honestly, its the clouds and ambient occlusion that makes certain times of day just pop with detail and vibrancy. You can see this most when your in New Austin and its overcast, the desert just comes to life!

HDR is to add more color not to add more white. Increase of color means every color will go up so stop complaining
Charles Mles you need to research what high dynamic range is bud. It is by definition about contrast so yes, highlight detail as well as shadow detail are a huge part of dynamic range. Not just color depth.
When playing red dead redemption 2 on my ps4 using the HDR everything just looks washed out. Colors are very washed out. Resident Evil 2 remake though looks great

I think AV geeks are a bit like wine geeks. A wine expert can taste a wine and can pick out every little subtlety of flavor and maybe even tell you what region of the world the grapes were grown in. Most people don't have the palate for that and just taste wine. Similarly, my eyes just aren't sophisticated enough to notice this kind of picture quality downgrade. Same with framerate. 30fps looks fine to me. Ignorance is bliss.
MakerInMotion it is not about if the game looks good. It's about the fact they call it hdr when it obviously not. Like I give you a white wine but in fact it's a red wine.
No... Wine geeks are nothing but placebo. Double blinded randomised tests have shown the best wine geeks are not able to point out the difference between high end and cheap wines. Even worse they couldn't tell the difference between red and white wine when white wine was colored red. This is objective.

If you turn off HDR be sure to restart the game to get the normal brightness options back.

What i did on PS4 PRO was that i turned HDR on in the TV settings, but off in the In-game settings!

i just brought this up to rockstar support today as HDR Mode is very dark for me with 100 on a Sony XF9005 and the colors look washed out.
When i turn up to 500, it's just too bright and even more washed out, blacks are not black anymore.
The stunning reply from Rockstar Support was this: "I've investigated but could not find any information related to it. Thank you for bringing this to our notice.
We'll look into this. Meanwhile, please continue playing the game in standard mode and if you face any other issues, just let us know."
My first thought was: raising the HDR Level to 500 in-game to get maximum possible brightness for HDR and turning down the Absolute Black Level to 35 on my Sony TV which should normally increase the dynamic Range again and turn the midtones down again to where they should be. But it didn't work, because it's clearly not HDR material. so all the midtones would be turned down to a lower brightness and the end result was the same picture as with the in game HDR slider to 100.
Turned out, the most effective thing to do was turning the Gamma Slider on my Sony TV to minimum as this will keep the bright Levels and really just raise the contrast and dynamic Range for the SDR content in this HDR Mode, also leaving Room for brighter light sources like the Sun and Fire.
Additionally the Sony Menu Setting in Clarity -> Smooth Graditation can be turned to low instead of off, so you will use the 10bit Colorspace and it will look like HDR when there are Gradients.
and i would also recommend setting the Vivid Color Setting from Sony to medium as it has a lot less impact in HDR Mode than in SDR Mode, so the picture would not look oversaturated but rather just have "some" color at all.
edit: i've come to play the game in SDR as it looks awesome like this.
I actually disabled HDR in this game because it looked so much more bland with HDR enabled. When i turned it off the game immediately looked more rich with color and contrast

Zack DiRusso i had the same observation but unlike you i actually found the « bland colors » more realistic and the « rich colors » looked plastic and fake, like these super -saturated settings in TV stores, so i left the HDR on.
@@Soldano999 agreed hdr gives things like skin and objects a much more realistic colour tone, as for deep blacks well a thunderstorm at night looks great in hdr on my tv, but imo hdr settings should be tweaked depending on game, tv settings i mean. i have a feeling all this is pure speculation and bullshit, i dont need some internet nerds telling me my game looks good, or bad.

@L They didn't release the first game on PC because the code base was a horrific mess of spaghetti. They wanted to make a port, but they barely had it running as it should on console, so it was deemed not feasible. There's a much better chance of seeing #2 ported.

The whole "I turned HDR off and it looks sharper"-comments are bullshit. HDR is screwed on both consoles in the same way. The XBox One X doesn't look that bad in HDR, because it is sharper in every way anyways.

Well, you are missing out. I was in the same boat a year ago.
I recently got a Sony A80k recently and I couldn’t understand why the game looked either washed out or very dark depending on the settings on my tv. Then after several days of trial and error finally tried disabled HDR10 on Xbox series x and being able to see a bit more detail on my tv. However once I also disabled HDR on the tv that’s when I finally saw the best picture, then it clicked on me that I was using actual native SDR. Of course after some adjustments on the TV, black levels, brightness etc, I am now finally happy with how the game looks, very realistic. It looks like this video is still true, HDR on RDR2 has not been fixed yet.
Dolby Vision I also tried and that’s how I actually saw the potential on how the game could look the best, but cannot use due to massive increase on input lag. I’m not sure what Dolby vision is doing but I’m guessing it’s using the actual native SDR signal and doing something with it. In any case that served as a reference and adjusted SDR to look as close to it and I gotta say I got pretty close, but without the input lag, VRR and 120hz screen refresh. Feels like a totally different game on this screen from when I first played it on 2018, with just a bit unnderstanding on tv calibration. I’m having a blast.

@@kregmaffews Controls can be clunky, a lot of the inventory stuff is really counterintuitive and can be very tedious at times, i appreciate the sense of realism but not when it gets in the way of the game being enjoyable... With all that said its still an amazing game and its all i can think about or play. i just hope in the future they will tweak some of the systems a bit to make the game more enjoyable.
@@AGoNYC I sort of agree with you about the controls, however I finally got the hang of the "flow" yesterday. Restarted the story with that extra knowledge and it's 3x as fun. Luckily I didn't do any story missions before I restarted.
@@kregmaffews controls just take getting used to, i still love this game to death, BUT the inventory management (or lack thereof) really hinders some of the gameplay. For instance the items in your satchel take up "space" but it is not known how much space each item takes, or how much space you have left in your satchel. I lost count of how many times ive been unable to harvest all an animals parts because my satchel is "full". Which brings me to the hunting, because of the need to physically store the items on the horse i cant really head out on long hunting trips getting lost in the wilderness. i am forced to go out and return every time i make a single big game kill.

Scienceofstupid 4K HDR is a lot better than 4K especially on an OLED tv. Makes the image look very realistic natural and looks 3D it increases depth of feel. SDR looks over saturated and overblown

On my Samsung TV (All HDR + enhancements off), Calibrated from Movie mode, and a PS4 with HDR on. I found that the native colour space (in HDR) washed everything out. A simple switch to auto colour space was all I needed to do. Looks great now!

I bought into the hype and preordered the 100$ version even though deep inside I sort of knew it was fools gold.
I don't know but there is something up with rRockstar Games, it's like their originality died afterthey did GTA IV(A masterpiece, nothing can top it) and Red Dead Redemption. It's really sad that while I'm playing RDR2 the whole story is bland and the real star character that you really feel for Was John Marston. Ironic. It's like they got really lazy and said lets ride on what we established already in 2010 RDR John Marston and not actually do character development for what's supposed to be the prequel. No way I'm believing in Rockstar Ever again.
It's actually a typical case of most of products and companies, when they're nobodies, they release a high quality product that they put in extreme effort, with that they establish a respected name and become famed of that product. and after they got their hook onto the consumers they turn into money hungered pigs and start releasing gimmiks of their original quality product Repackaged. Similar to what Apple does for the Iphone.

I'm waiting for the multiplayer part of the game to be open sometime this month as they stated. Maybe after all they werent so focused on the Storymode when the were developing the game initially, and intended the game to be mainly an online one. And I can see that.
In all honesty with the whole industry and the products we have seen yet so far over the years, Rockstar could have done worse than they did.
I appreciate what they did with Red dead and I know I'll be playing it following the next years, its just I feel cheated out with what they did to it, and I know for a fact that they could have done a better job, especially with the budget they had and time.
