Why Pedro Pascal is the PERFECT Joel

- A video all about why I think Pedro Pascal is probably the best working actor they could have cast as Joel in The Last of Us TV adaptation, talking about fun subjects like The Mandalorian, if video games can be art or not, and Baby Yoda night lights. Enjoy!
It’s kinda creepy how close the mandalorian and last of us plot are (that’s probably a subtle reason why I liked the mandalorian so much), and that pascal happens to be the lead in that show too.
It’s actually a common outline for several games, shows, and movies. Off the top of my head, Logan, God of War, Leon, Terminator 2, TWD Telltale, AGOT. Hell, TLOU even rips off its own formula in the second game with Abby and Lev. Not judging btw, I fall for it nearly every time.
@Mike Schmidt I remember hearing rumors as far back as 2017 that they were gonna try to adapt TLOU to live action and everyone rooted for Hugh Jackman to be Joel. And yeah, he would nail the look and feel... but he had already done that story with Logan so. If he were to have been cast it would have kind of thrown me off because we've basically already had something similar to Joel in Logan. I'm still excited. I gratefully accepted Pedro to be Joel.. I think he'll do a good job
@@mikeschmidt4624 don’t forget the Witcher and the Arya and the Hound storyline in GOT
When Pedro was announced I immediately cried thinking about him singing “if I ever were to lose you” to Baby Yoda like Joel does to Ellie 😭
"A hero would sacrifice you to save the world, but an outlaw will sacrifice the world to save you."
I've never shared the same views as a hero, and I would do what Joel did to save my child (even if she's not his biological kid).
Joel shows a very brutal way of a fathers love, not one with a bunch of hugs, but the ultimate sacrifice over and over.
This is an amazing game and I hope the HBO series can live up to the expectations.
Pedro also has experience playing a Texas-type character when he played Whiskey in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Did pretty well too.
"In the other, the child is a 14-year-old lesbian who loves puns."
That is the absolute perfect one sentence description of Ellie.
Totally agree with you. He is perfect for the role. Pedro can pull of Joel's character, personality and how he conveys his emotions. He was really good in The Mandalorian. I know he'll nail this role again for sure.
Yea but when I hear about the Elaine casting...I got un-hype because she's not really pretty.she's not fit to play Elaine
He’s not perfect for the role
Yes he is
He was insane in triple frontier
@@leroyvermilion7708 whose Elaine? Do you mean Ellie?
Yep this video was pretty much spot on
This video is gorgeous and beautifully edited and so well thought out I’m shocked that it only has 1,000 views!!
Thanks so much!
I just wanted to said that you ARE RIGHT AFTER THE SHOW AIRED OMG HE IS PERFECT FOR JOEL
YOU ARE WAY AHEAD OF OUR TIME
Gonna be amazing seeing Pedro’s do these scenes
I'd rather have a good actor that doesn't look like Joel, play Joel. Than an average actor that looks like Joel, play Joel.
The good actor will make us believe he's the embodiment of Joel whilst the other will come across as a fraud.
I’d like to have a great actor to look like Joel to play Joel
@@angelfuturejob jamie lannister
@@user2004k oh yeah he would be great
@@angelfuturejob Well cope.
Honestly Hugh jackman was the one i was expecting to play Joel
I think what could really work is that comedic charme that Pedro has in most of his famous roles. Sure, he's not telling jokes in the Mandalorian but he's not as depressed as Joel. When people is gonna see Joel in the prorogue with his daughter Sarah, they're going to recognize the good guy side of Pedro and empathize with him in a moment. Then, after the time jump, we're gonna see a depressed and nichilist Pedro that really isn't what you normally expect from him. But while bonding with Ellie, Joel slowly returns to be his best self in a lot of ways and people who expected Pedro to have that vibe all the way trough the story will feel very satysfied and connected to him. That's the perfect emotional state to have when you get to the ending, because in the game yeah - you start to feel like "oh shit i'm the bad guy" but at the same time you sincerely want to save Ellie no matter what, like Joel does. What i'm trying to say is that is better to empathize with him from the start because you don't want people to get to the ending and be like "motherfucker you should let her die and save the world". Pedro is easy to empathize with from the get go.
I mean I've always wanted Hugh Jackman to play Joel I honestly think he was born to play him, has like Joel hopped out of the game, but I'm pretty excited to see someone else play the role and I'm seriously hoping HBO doesn't let us all down and does right by us and by that god damned amazing game😔 Also jesus man amazing video! Definitely got a subscription from me but honestly you deserve way more subscribers ❤️
I agree Hugh looks just like Joel
I think he would have definitely embodied the role perfectly but I would have only been thinking about Logan throughout the show because he played essentially the same character as he did then.
This video was amazing. A beautifully throughough analysis of the games and Pedro's overall roles, in my opinion. I would love to see a newer video going over the shows takes on all this, how much you were right about and what you thought they'd do differently! Especially the hospital scene. I was completely surprised when I saw how small your channel is despite how professional and good this video is?? This vids been in my recommended for a few weeks now and I just got around to watching it, assuming it was another TLOU show analysis with over 200k views. But no, this was made over a year before the show even came out, in defence of Pedro Pascal. Again, this video was incredible man. I hope you upload more TLOU/film analysis content in general soon!!! Keep this up dude!!!
This aged really well
The only thing I didn’t like was that he doesn’t do Joel’s accent
Dude, excellent video. This showed up in my recommended, and I watched the whole thing beginning to end. Then after that I saw the number of views the video had, and the number of subscribers you had, and it blew my mind. Good shit. Keep up the great work, you're killing it. Earned a new subscriber!
Coming back here now that the show is finally out. Please upload again bro!
Well that’s what i call typecasting. Excited for the series.
Pedro Pascal wasnt my 1st choice because i thought he would be to busy with filming the mandalorian but he is a perfect casting for joel
I know exactly where they were heading when they pick Pedro as Joel. The Mandalorian is the perfect audition for Joel.
Pedro Pascal is so awesome and great as Joel lot of people don’t agree but The last of us helped so much with my life as well
Maaaannnn, I have played The Last of Us parts 1&2 and it has the most awesome story ever. Hearing that it would be made into a series with HBO, H.Jackman was always my choice for Joel and Pedro Pascal was already a "no-no" for me. But deym! Watching him in the movie with Nick Cage, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent ", it gave me a total change of heart. Pedro Pascal would do great as Joel and that's for certain.
Oh wow I never thought about the extreme similarities between TLOU and Mandalorian. Nice job pointing that out
When they said he will be Joel, i went back to watch the scene where he was talking with Tyrion about how he saw a child, not a monster and i knew they chose well.
this videos deserves much more views for the work you put in. keep up the good work man. subscribed
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it
Some people say that the casting is horrible but they literally casted the same actor of Marlene from the game
this video is so well done, you deserve many more subscribers and the fact that this has less than 5k views is unbelievable
Fantastic video! Can believe it doesn’t have more views! Wish you a successful future.
Thanks, it genuinely means a lot!
Pedro Pascal is the MANDALORIAN he was amazing and I think he would be a perfect choice and I also saw the trailer he had that Joel look.
It's basically Mandalorian without helmet YES
He doesn't really looks like Joel (his face is small and a little too friendly compared to joel) but at least I know this character is on safe hands. He's a really good actor and I hope he makes justice for Joel.
This was a really GOOD video! Seriously, I agreed to everything you said.
The need to come across the actor n actresses who play Joel n Tommy n bill n Ellie n marellen and others to even if they r on for a few seconds from runners to a dead body or people running to survive anything or be one of the many hunters trying to kill them all .. something bc that be amazing 😍🤩
It's strange coz the last of us is basically a giant escort quest albeit one that's done really really well
this is so well explained
thanks,i really needed those information
I just hope they do a different storyline for the last of us part two for that bc a lot of people be disappointed in it
Really great vid
Kind of funny how similar The Mandalorian is to The Last of Us. Even down to the way Joel and Mando act. The way they remain reserved at first but later reveal their emotions and open up, and become dads to very unique special children. Pedro has the look for it too. Not sure I like the casting of Bella Ramsey, but I’m more than pleased that Pascal was cast. He’s very talented and underrated
It was def a smart move on their part, it being so similar to mandalorian. I will say tho, lots of people didnt watch mandalorian (like me) and didnt know pedro until LOU. I dont live under a rock but I prefer non-fiction stuff 😆. I thought he did a great job in LOU. Im glad I discovered pedro bc ive since watched all his other work, including mando, and all his interviews since 2014. He’s such a great guy.
Note, u might say LOU isnt non-fiction. The key is that it COULD happen. Dystopians are interesting to me. Also, HBO marketed the shit out of LOU so I knew I had to check it out. At first it was too scary for me (old lady in first episode), but im glad i stuck it out.
If you think The Mandalorian is eerily close to the plot of tlou- you should watch one of the more underground movies Pedro’s in, Prospect- similar grungy atmosphere, western themes, and dad and adopted daughter story. One of my fav movies!
Knowing Pedro’s career and his range it makes me infinitely excited as a fan of the games, Troy Baker gave SO much in playing Joel and I honestly think Pedro will continue that level of quality, we know Troy’s interpretation from the games and that prime universe now let’s see a different interpretation of the same story
Lots of talk about mandalorian. But have a look at the movie prospect if you haven't seen it [especially if you like sci-fi]. Gives you a much better idea of how he might be in tlou.
Never doubted him for this role. I think most people think Josh Brolin is like the perfect scenario choice, but Pascal is great and I can see him pulling Joel off very well. C'mon people, Craig Mazin is heading this whole thing, and he's earned the benefit of the doubt. If the work he did on Chernobyl is any indicator, he's already got the atmosphere of TLOU down. Add in that the guy loves the games, and we're starting to get a perfect stew of talent and knowledge of the material to knock this out of the park.
It is pure genius simple as that... Well said...
I still think Hugh Jackman is the best choice for Joel Miller
no.very bad
I think Hugh would also work, but he’d be too damn expensive
better choice Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (either for Joel or Tommie )
@@Erenforce No it’s not
I agree
Literally as time has passed my main "issue" with Pedro being Joel is the fact that he doesn't have a full beard like the in-game Joel does.
Idk man, it's dumb, but like...it's just an iconic part of Joel yanno?
It's ridiculous that my only nitpick with Pedro playing Joel is his beard but I can't help it lmao. I'll hopefully forget about it while watching if he does good enough.
awesome video fr!
I think is awesome and he be perfect for Joel bc of his previous works and he doesn't have to be a look alike this is how the actor is at his job n crafts
Omg you just blew my fucking mind, its the exactly fucking story
Great video, thanks for sharing
That mandalorian intro scared me lmao
Sorry about that, I'll try to sort out my sound levels next time!
@@obin600 no sweat man keep up the good work
really good video dude :)
I heard a lot of people hating already n putting the little girl actress playing as Ellie. They need to give her at least a chance not everything has to be the same with the tv series to the game
the show dexter kinda proves you can do the same when you aren't in control of the gameplay
Damn... I love The Last of Us's story so much... guess I gotta watch The Mandalorian now.
I don’t really think Ellie is exactly a “replacement” for his
Daughter Sarah, but I think she helped fill that void in him, which died when
Sarah died. And I think Joel
Filled a similar void in her as well. Joel says that he thinks Sarah and Ellie would
Be great friends, and Ellie agrees. I think there was some projection, but I don’t think it was as Prevailing or toxic. But I love this review nonetheless!! Tlou (1 and 2) are my most favorite games 🥰
I agree that pascals a great choice and I feel his character from narcos could help him out, even though that character was always about doing the right thing, in the later seasons he became more of the silent and clever character, and after re watching narcos after his Joel casting I see a lot of things that would be great as Joel. I think we will get a different Joel that we expect but it will be a good thing because like you said a character like that only works in a video game.
It is kind of a revalation at the end of the game when you realize Joel really did turn out bad towards the end and the fireflies were the good guys the whole time. All because of that lie he told Ellie. But can you blame him? I can relate to Joel because if an apocalypse and the loss of your child threw you into 20 years of hell and sadness, to having to be reminded of that pain in someone like Ellie because she embodied your child. Had to spend an entire year bringing her across the country, with her saving your life and caring for you. Yeah. I think if I were in Joel's shoes, as hard of a decision it may be, I would have saved her. I would have been extremely tired of having to deal with loss. I'll take a golf club to the head if I have to.
And yeah. I know that sounds selfish. But again, if I were Joel and I let them kill ellie to save the world. I probably wouldn't be long for the world afterwards.
In the world of the last of us, there's never really any good people. When it's a dog eat dog world with no laws or morals, humans can be scary evil creatures. Joel isn't a good guy for what he did at the end of the first game but when he sees someone as his family it makes you wonder "what would I do in this situation?" A question for anyone but mainly for parents
Always wondered what the game be like if sara never died and how would sara turn into being older
I’ve never seen Pedro Pascal in anything so I don’t know how he will do in the role of Joel at all. Seen a few interviews that made me question the choice but just have to look deeper. Thought actors like Jeffery Dean Morgan or Hugh Jackman would have been good casts but we will see :)
I wondered what this show would of looked like with the budgrt that it has that if they had casted hugh jackman as joel. Im not saying this guy is a bad choice just curious
I think pedro will be absolutely amazing. But I do have to say Josh Brolin was my #1 pick
Not a bad choice. He was top 3 for me. He has the deep voice. My first choice was Gerard butler.
As long as they get Danny McBride to play as Bill; I'm down.
Rick Grimes on TWD does things similar to Joel by killing people in the Apocalypse who are bad or good to keep the people he cares about safe.
It's not Joel I'm worried about, Its Ellie
Ikr
She wasn't casted haphazardly. Neil, Craig, and the casting director Victoria Thomas (was casting director for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Django Unchained, HBO's Watchmen) must've chosen her for good reason. I have seen enough of their and Bella's work to give them the benefit of the doubt and go in with an open mind
I was also a bit skeptical of her. I knew that she could play Ellie's tougher side, but was unsure about how'd she'd play Ellie's more innocent, naïve side.
I then happened upon this short film. It's just 8 minutes, but Bella Ramsey gives a VERY natural performance and I could really see parts of Ellie in her. If you've got the time, give it a watch :)

@@SidPhoenix2211 thanks alot for sharing that link! Id watch that right away
@@SidPhoenix2211 damn if! I just saw it! Shes perfect! Just hope she can pull off a decent american accent
Yepp I'm worried that the actress for Ellie will fall flat with Pedro. This isn't a smack or shot at the female actress I just don't think she's old enough for Ellie even in the early stages of the story and Ellie ark. I just hope it's a success
Should have been Josh Brolin as Joel and Raegan Revord (MIssy from Young Sheldon) as Ellie for the cast. If she could act, she would have been perfect, since she is the perfect age now and would grow (like Ellie did) for subsequent years of the series.
So your argument is Mandalorian and Joel are similar. No one is gonna look at the two as the same character type.
Pedro will make a great Joel because he is an amazing actor.
Joel the game was a hardened Soldier, joel the show is traumatized and broken
No spoiler warning? Thanks a lot dude! 👏👏👏
Josh Brolin would have been perfect. I'm sure Pedro will do well also.
I been saying this since day one but no one listened
Pedro better have that southern accent down packed i tell you that much. He definitely has the tone for joel but he better pull that accent off is all im saying. Please i hope this series doesnt turn out cheesy
Hugh Jackman should have been Joel
Finally...you same as me...👍👍👍 Pedro Pascal face should play as David villain the crazy man...
I’m not sold on this at all. But we’ll see.
Nikolaj Coster from game of thronez look alike too
Karl Urban could be an amazing Joel
I love this vedio
Hugh jackmen would be better, didn't logan have the same type of story?
and the dude looks good in lumberjack shirts like come on people, its perfect.
and the relationship logan had with the girl was like Joel and ellie, correct me if I'm wrong
Can this game come to pc
why can't he grow a beard like joel, maybe they can CGI an actual beard later
U sure Ellie is not a frog monster.
He might be able to pull it off like how Karl Urban became Judge Dredd or Henry Cavill became Geralt.
But that'd take the efforts of a good director, and it'd take Pedro Pascal to put effort into the role and TLOU series has neither of these.
So in the end he'll likely be half-assing this job just to stay in the industry and keep in the good graces of a big corporation (Sony) and the director won't even notice since history's proven they don't care about the resulting product.
I disagree with both of your points.
If You Never Lived The Life kill or be killed You will never know.... I would due Due It ALL OVER AGAIN No question about
I don't who he is, but he looks a bit like Joel. I'm down. Ellie's cast on the other end....
Not know Pedro Pascal? Narcos's Javier Pena, The Mandalorian's Din Djarin?
better choice Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (either for Joel or Tommie )
Nah I think there are way better castings then Pedro for Joel but I'm not ruling him out yet. Imo this should have been an animated movie with the OG voice cast
But Hugh Jackman would still be the best for Joel
1:01
I got your logic and I totally support the Pedro Pascal casting BUT by the same logic wouldn't Hugh Jackman be a good casting decision too? I mean, Logan is The Last of Us with mutants and a bit of a western.
Only 50 subscribers??
There’s another movie. An indie Movie called “prospect” the story is a little different but there’s a girl that he is with the whole movie so.. type cast as gruff dad? Absolutely. Am I mad? Absolutely not.
i wanted Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as joel
Well... You're wrong.
You literally said the opposite of what they needed to do. Everybody’s going to watch Pedro Pascal and think of the Mandalorian and the last of us is not going to get the credit it deserves, rather everyone is going to be talking about the Mandalorian. The Mandalorian is going to have too much influence in the last of us and that’s what pisses me off along with several others I’m sure. The last of us needs to be it’s own thing and I would rather it be with two actors the people are hardly familiar with and be able to have their time to shine, But thank you for verifying my thought process because once again they’re going to fuck something that can be amazing up just because he played in the Mandalorian. These are completely different universes and acting skills. The last of us Joel’s not supposed to just be quiet and only be a badass he’s got to have the emotion in everything he does like he’s doing it for what he thinks is right and believes in and not to just be a “badass” there are also other characters that played similar roles to the last of us.
Lets look at the alternative options that fans wanted. Nikolai Coster Waldau...soooo everyone is going to think of Jaime Lannister. Hugh Jackman....sooo Logan. Josh Brolin I suppose is the only common option that has a variety of roles that would make it difficult to pinpoint, especially since Thanos is purple and probably won't be thought of as Joel. So regardless, its kind of the same issue no matter what.
I'm so grateful casting directors don't think the way you do lmao
Sorry, I love Pedro.... but he isn't Joel
Pues te lo vas a tener que comer con patatas fritas 🤣🤣
Pedro Pascal is a fine choice, it’s the Ellie casting that is awful
i just don't see it. i think this is gonna bomb hard. for alot of reasons. 1 of the biggest is its a video game show which is the only thing that beats out a video game movie in awfulness 😂
when you take a video game loved by many a live show is always, alwaaaaays gonna be a huge step down. its a logical fail. common sense fail.
if you tell me your favorite food and i so ok im gonna now try to reproduce that. whatever i make is not gonna be as good as your favorite made at your favorite place.
no matter how well the acting is its not gonna live up to the game.
reminds me of the logical fail that was made when they rebooted devil may cry 🤣
they rebooted a game by replacing 2 characters loved by all in their current rendition.
if they are loved by all why would you change that 😂
thats like if i ask whats your favorite place to eat? and whats your favorite thing on the menu?
and now i remove that from the menu 😂
these game shows and movies are cursed right from the get go. would be cool if it was good but its not gonna be.
