The caste-based reservation system in India has its roots in efforts to address historical social inequalities and discrimination faced by marginalized communities, particularly the Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The concept was first introduced in British India with the Poona Pact of 1932, which reserved seats in legislative bodies for SCs. Post-independence, the Indian Constitution, through Articles 15(4) and 16(4), institutionalized reservations in education, employment, and political representation to promote social justice and uplift historically oppressed communities. Over time, these reservations have been expanded and debated, reflecting ongoing challenges in addressing caste-based disparities in India.

Belive me , I never gave a sh#t about caste till I passed class 12 , I did qualify jee advance this year as a dropper ( wasn't able to get college last year because of my rank ) , I don't want to , but now, I sure look down on those students that got there seat through reservation

I could get some low rank IITs with dumb branches. But I chose to try again. I'm in the general category. My family is just a lower middle income family.
But It's ok . I used to say that the Government should give them money to afford that level of study instead of seats for low marks . But I understand politics way better now .
The only practical solution in the real world is to completely revolutionize the education system. And make India almost 100% educated .

Biggest argument against reservation is just the wrongfully awarding of ST status to Meena community of Rajasthan with Meena surnames, they are grabbing more than 50% of reservation of STs at National level , sometimes even 90% since independence despite being noway a adiwasi community of forested regions of India but a landlord community of Rajasthan.
Yes I also belong to rajasthan and I see many peoples who belongs to meena community in Rajasthan have so much land and they get easily government jobs because of reservation. I think this is unfair for other community which falls in st category. Fir meenas suitable category is obc not st.

feels a lil stupid for that person to have reservation.
This issue can actually be tackled by caste census. If the govt can find out which sub-caste is how well off, the can now adjust the limits thanks to Supreme Court's decision to allow caste based reservation to sub categories, and allowing creamy layer. Any sub caste which is well off should not get reservation/get very low reservation. The solution sounds simple, but I don't think any political party would take away reservation from any group as it would impact the vote bank.

Our dissent towards the reservation system stems from the inherent flaws within the system itself! If reservation is to be granted based on caste, then just as the general caste students are required to secure 500 marks in the examinations, the SC/ST candidates should also be mandated to obtain 500 or more marks to be eligible for admission under the reservation quota. If it is predetermined that 10 out of 100 seats are to be allocated under the reservation quota, then it should be essential for those candidates to achieve considerable marks as well. That is to say, if 10 out of 100 have scored 500 or above, then admission should be granted to them, and if only 5 SC/ST candidates have achieved 500 or more, then the remaining 5 seats should be left vacant. If admission is to be provided based on caste alone, then the opportunity should be given only to those who have secured the full marks.
Therefore, if the reservation system is introduced in the manner I have just explained, then the reservation quota would be beneficial; otherwise, it would create complications. The reservation quota system can be considered appropriate only if it does not compromise on the numbers or the quality, otherwise, it is not. And if an SC/ST candidate happens to be affluent, then the condition for them should be to achieve the highest marks. It is due to the absence of all these factors that we are uncomfortable with the reservation system, or so I believe.
As a ST I feel like professional sectors like doctor .. military..administrative should be only based on merits not quota.

and not many people know that Baba Saheb Ambedkars real surname was Sakpal but due to his bhraman teacher who inspired him to study and fight against the caste system he took his surname as a sign of respect.

Cut off will be always high in high population state like Bihar Rajasthan etc and colleges.are also low in numbers in these states and cutoff will low in low population states or states having high med seats due to 85 per state quota and only 15 per central quota

As a person from the General Category, I don't oppose reservations, especially when 50% of medical seats are filled by money (private), not talent, but I have some suggestions 1. Proper sub-categorisation should occur for all SC, ST, and OBC Castes 2. The creamy layer should be implemented for SC/ST although the criteria can be a bit more relaxed than that of OBC, 3. The income limit to claim EWS should be reduced to 3 lakhs per annum, Producing an income certificate should also be much stricter.
250 million Indians (general castes) are banned from more than 60% of govt jobs and college seats just because of their identity. This is what discrimination actually looks like.

I belong to SC Category and working as a government teacher in a tribal hinterland. One day We were supposed to provide kheer in our school's mid day meal, the cooks cooked kheer and i sprinkled cardamom powder over it, later on to my surprise another teacher pointed out the fact that the cooks didn't eat that kheer as it was touched by a Scheduled Caste teacher.
The discrimination was never on basis on class/ Money in your bank account, its a social issue removing the reservation won't benefit the community.
Aaj ek news padhi mene ek dalit mahila mid day meal banati thi to general category ke baccho ne khana mana kar diya so they fired her and kisi aur ko hire kar liya general category se. Now dalit people denied to accept meal which is cooked by so called upper caste people aur wo apne baccho ko tiffin deke school bhejte hai

@@aishiii7737 I've never denied the fact that there are no poor people in the General category, But affirmative actions for SC/ST were given on basis of Social inequality and not for financial/class inequality.
On the other hand OBC were never treated as untouchables and their "backwardness" were predominantly on basis of monetary aspects therefore it makes sense to bifurcate OBC as creamy layer and non Creamy layer.
But for SC even if you make it into the upper echelons of society you're bound to face castism.

Appeal to dalits to end descrimination:
Dalits should be educated, they should know their rights, they should be taught confidence. Reservation is a paradox because when you say you have reservation to people they get to know that you are Dalit then they will look down on you and then you ask for reservation to compensate. Once a Dalit comes out of poverty and attains education he should stop calling him self a dalit with confidence and give up reservation. Half of the effort must be made by Dalits themselves to come out of discrimination. when you calling yourselves a Dalit you are saying that you belong to "lower category" human being, so do not call yourselves a dalit.

All throughout my school life I never bothered to think to which caste my batchmates belong to. To me all of them were my friends, all of them were Indians.
Fast forward to me attempting entrance exams, not securing any government seat but my friends who scored way lower than me got in. It baffled me, it just didn't make any sense. The caste I never discriminated against suddenly got planted in my head as the 'students who got in with reservation, they killed my merit'. It has created unnecessary hate in my mind for them. And that is... India's reservation policy for you. Reservation divides you more. Period.

US here. Completely agree with you. The blatant disregard of resources that I saw in my institution and the job afterward by those who came through reservation was appalling. If those opportunities were given to a deserving candidate, so much would have improved including working condition where the hard working person is exploited by those who never had to do any hard work in their life. Everything was served on platter to them. Caste-based reservation is a malignant cancer to this country.

Reservation should be given as free school and colleges with bare minimum fee charges . Not in terms of exams numbers. This is very wrong. Make people aware to go to schools and colleges . Let them study. But please remove it from competitive exams . Not fare at all. Government only wants votes they don't care about people of India this is harsh reality. India have genius brains but they all want to go abroad for jobs and higher studies. Then how can we going to progress how? I am st and guess what? Even if I get sit in IIT as per reservation and then offer from abroad I'd still leave this country lol. The problem of brain drain is not reservation it's about the quality of life and surrounding. Indian mentality is too cheap and when you work so hard to build your self you can see what are the other limiting factors of this country. Trust me pal a lot of students even attempt in IIT because they think it's their only way out of this country. Beside who wants to put their labour for half the price when they could earn more in other place. Try to think problems from different perspective don't just bash the caste system lol. I know a guy in college and he's from Maharashtra. His father is a structural engineer and his mother is an architect. They run a successful studio.
That guy avails reservation quota scholarship money of 2 laks per year because he's from minority. He owns many luxury items still he gets the benefit of reservation just because he says Jai Bheem.
I come from Bihar and has a little unstable financial condition but I don't get any benefits because there aren't anything much for a general category guy.

Other than this I don't think government provide any scholarship for creamy layer SC/ST with upper limit of 5 LPA here at IIT bombay while it's 7 LPA for OBC NC layer,

For categorisation we need caste census we also need to find which sc/st castes are forward and which are backward. Yes but only in some cases to ensure social justice and at the same time ensure that it doesn't start a new war
5. Should free education be considered as a benchmark for not giving reservation?
Free education must be an objective of the state which falls with the socialist ideals on which the country was founded, however it cannot be used a benchmark for not giving reservation, quotas are given as compensation to the qualities you are getting while preparing for an exam, if you are getting free education but you have to work a 10 hour shift and have to study on the floor or if your father even after free education can barely afford food, you deserve reservation
6. What's the issue with reservation then?
The issue is we Indians focus on how we will divide the existing 2 cookies leading to scarcity for all while countries like China focus on how to increase these 2 cookies to 10.
7. Understanding that a society/ecosystem has a certain carrying capacity the societies like China,Korea and Japan also controlled their birth rate.

In my opinion, Reservation is a key factor to communal hatred and casteism that is seen in today's generation. Why shouldn't it be? When an undeserving candidate gets a job without even working hard and you are there wondering what you're doing with your life, the sentiment of hatred towards them is normal. How do you live with the knowledge that there are people out there with less than 70 percentiles doing what unreserved people need 99 percentiles for? Why should I not look down upon these undeserving people who are there just because of reservation?
