This game perfectly captures the atmosphere that I experienced in a dream one time; I had no idea how to describe the atmosphere in that dream until this game was released, and this game is also probably the closest that I have seen something come to a "recording of a dream", in terms of visuals and atmosphere.
2:15:48 I clearly remember my father playing this masterpiece in 2002 (I was 3, what a good introduction to videogames) and when he saw that part he restarted the game like 8 times to see if they could pass through the bridge (after some trying he let the game advance. and he finished it) because he couldn't accept the fact that the bridge didn't let Ico and Yorda reach that final totems
I was trying to figure out what makes this game feel off or weird and I think I figured it out. Its the sound design. There isn't combat music or music as we would think today. Its more sound effects and tranquil yet also mysterious.
Do you just want easy generic streamlined mechanics that provide no challenge or originality within the feel of movement/physics like most games today? I miss the harder more unforgiving platforming and the slow paced repetitive traversal of oldschool games and their far more unorthodox game design. 1994 - 2001 was probably the most experimental gaming era ever , and easily my favorite.
@fawkkyutuu8851 I agree with that. I don't really play first person shooters if you're eluding to those at all. I despise them to my very soul. Not because they're violent but because they're all the same thing. I didn't like the jump, run, push blocks around routine that we did a lot of from super nintendo- ps2 era, but I do agree it was the most creative time ever but games are still evolving. Even if a bit slower. It's a young hobby and I've never stopped loving video games. I was a teenager in that era so I got a very big wiff of that time.

This game just has an incredible atmosphere. A summer day, a huge castle and two strange children fighting off shadows. Just finished this game. Honestly, when Yorda turned into a shadow, I almost cried. And when Iсo found her on the shore, I did cry with happiness.
My dads in his mid 60's now, he bought this game in 2001 when i was 8 years old and used to play it after work. So many memories, he hasnt played a game on ps2 since 2002 but ill never forget coming downstairs at night before bed and sitting trying to help him at parts of the game. I distinctivley remember having nightmares over the shadow things
i have a very nice relationship to this game. i didnt have had enough money to buy it. we had a graduation trip in thr school. my dad gave me 50 euro for eating and drinking. i spared that money. watched my buddies eating from mcdonalds and everything. soending their money for this and that. i kept that paper for buying this game. and i still have it. ico is love for me :) now im 34 years old. the time is flying
This game is very collectable now especially in the tin box set , if you have the ps2 version it's really really collectable, look it up to see what yours is worth.
I recently bought a pile of ps2 and got this game with it. Didnt know anything about it, first the difficulty level was asian but i was able to beat it while drunk, lol. This video helped alot, it only took 9 hours. The final boss was too easy. Cool game, it has inspired many game devs. The "shadow monsters" are quite identical to the ones in the 1998 game heart of darkness.

The great thing about this game was you got no tips how to play you had to work it out, and because the graphics on most games weren't great at the time gameplay had to be good, but this game had both I remember seeing the water at the broken building and how real it looked

This was in the first group of games I got on the ps2 with mobile suite gundam. Man I was so happy when they remastered these for the ps3. I hope they do a remake like they did for demons souls for this masterpiece.
@@Teeplesexe mainly because they actually rebuilt all the assets for the game. Shadow just did the textures. Also the remapping of the controls makes it hard for me to go back to my ps3 version of the game. Don’t get me wrong I like the new control scheme, but I feel for the type of game that it is they should have done an upgrade on every single asset in the game. Demons did everything but the ai, they made it faster but still the same ai. Honestly I could name about 100 games I would love to see a ps5 version of the games. I still have a dream that Nintendo will release a game on the ps5 just to show how badass they are with development and using the platforms full potential. Nintendo is a master at fully utilizing their platforms.

i'd love for them to remake it instead of just a remaster, i love ico but shadow of the colossus has aged much more gracefully. same length, same general castle layout, but switch it up a bit to keep veterans on their toes and maybe improve the combat slightly (but not too much bc that would sort of take away from the relationship) and remove the terrible block puzzles

I don't want easy jumps that work the way you'd expect them to. ICO Is a high art masterpiece of otherworldly dreamlike tranquility , It still has the same effect on me as launch day 2001 (GOAT year with 1998).
Ok, I get that and I see your point. But after a while of missing jumps it just gets frustrating, and it took me away from the experience that you are describing. I just finished my first play through, so it doesn't have that nostalgia factor for me, and even though I see why so many people loved it, and it has some great things to teach to newer games. (Like using no interface when the game doesn't need one, or not using a health bar just because there is combat), but on other aspects I think it aged poorly (in my humble opinion). this game sucks so hard. you are fighting nothing but controls and camera. An amazing ambiente, amazing sound and design, yet solely destroed by the shi** controls. I gave up finishing the game shortly after the bridge scene, watched the ending here and moved on. Thank you for this video, so I could at least watch the end
@@nanuninja8061 I had the same issue with The Last Guardian as well. Proper and well Designed Controls are an absolute must have. That being said, it was a lot better with TLG and I finished it

I was like 9 when I first played this and it blew me away. This and Metal Gear Solid 2 showed me as a kid how video games could be interactive art.

Looks like ps2. I had an awful glitch with the bouncing pilar, had to restart game several times to make the jump trick work.
