Metallica's self-titled album, commonly known as "The Black Album", is one of the best-selling records of all time. But does it make it the best Metallica album? In fact, some even view it as the worst one. The Black Album introduced me to the band. I love it, but it does have flaws, which even James Hetfield himself admited. This is what we're discussing in today's episode of MetalliGeek - our Metallica podcast.

Andriy Vasylenko st. Anger is a really good record. First record I heard from Metallica was Justice. Honestly the next album I heard from them was st. Anger. It’s such a good album. In a time where the band was in hard times, listening to the lyrics, it’s fucking amazing. As a die hard fan, I just understand the lyrics.if St. Anger wasn’t produced so horribly, that would be the Black Album of the 2000s. St. Anger is a better album than we all think

The black album was their commercial album and got them popular with a new crowd that like music video shows.. it made the pop kids feel tough to play a couple tracks in amongst the pop trash on their mp3 player. Most of them have faded away thank God... the metal gods! Master of Puppets was the first record I heard from Metallica. The classical sounding strings at the start interested me and then when it all kicked in .. it fucking blew my mind and Im a life long fan ever since. 🤘

Sad But True was the first Metallica song I ever heard. Heard it on the radio. I'd tune in every day just for Metallica, the station I listened to even had Metallica Mondays among other things. When I was very very young I lived for the radio. When I was 11 or 12 I got my first CD player, bought my first Metallica record at the local movie store. I think it was MoP. I listened to every track hundreds of times on repeat. I was completely taken by heavy music. When I graduated HS I started to branch out. Pantera has since become my favorite metal band, however, Metallica will always by my original number 1, the band that got me into metal, got me into guitar, and influenced me and my playing to some unknowable extent far beyond my own comprehension. All I know is I NEED heavy guitar in my life

  • @ricequin

Very few bands are doing new and revolutionary stuff a decade and five albums into their career. The record isn’t groundbreaking but it was a great way to bring new people to both Metallica and metal more widely. I was 11 when it came out and was already interested in metal from my minimal exposure from Iron Maiden having a couple of U.K. no. 1 singles in my childhood that actually got some radio play. A friend’s brother letting me hear the Black Album was the starting point for me seeking out actual metal after years of loving my Dad’s Queen and Deep Purple records. I started buying Kerrang! and hanging out with the guys in school who were metalheads. I picked up a guitar a couple of years later and my teen years were heavily influenced by my discovery of heavy music.

A comment that I saw on My Friend Of Misery's comment section
Little known fact - this song was originally an instrumental. Black Album was the 1st Metallica album to not have in instrumental. James said he got so in love with the music from this song he would listen to it multiple times a day while they were recording the album, and eventually he started hearing a vocal track with it in his head, so he had to write some lyrics and see how it sounded. Everyone loved it and agreed it was better with the vocal track than without, and Bob Rock made it so.
That's why this song has such a different feel to it than most Metallica songs. . .the writing process was different than most of their songs. And it was totally complete before any vocal tracking was even considered. I gotta say. . .goddamn this would have been an amazing instrumental. But James lyrics in this song are too important to have gone by the wayside. Its pretty fuckin difficult to complain about the final product. Lol.

Honestly I see this album as an a equivalent to some of the Beatles and The Who albums. Not necessarily fans favourite, but the best way for people to be broken in. Also, its commercial success is not a bad thing whatsoever. It made Metal so much more accessible. They were some of the first to let people know that liking metal is not a bad thing. Most metalheads even today have such an arrogance towards non-metalheads that makes the genre sometimes inaccessible. The black album was a way to bridge that gap so to speak.
Musically, there is no doubt filler within the album. However, the band themselves were at their peak and higher, which makes the black album era of metallica still on of my favourites

When the novelty of the Black album wore off, I realized how bland and uninspiring it was. Plus, Metallica basically became everything they used to make fun of in the 80's. Working with a producer that made Motley Crue records. Putting their band logo on their private jet (there was an article where Lars was actually quoted saying "we'll leave that to the Bon Jovi's of the world"). Writing and releasing songs that were simpler, catchier and obviously intended for commercial appeal. Plus, the overall sound on the Black album was noticeably lighter. Guitars weren't as chunky and the supposedly heavier parts were watered down in the production. I'm glad they rebounded and found their hardcore fanbase again with Death Magnetic and Hardwired but yeah, between Black and then was an era most old school Metallica fans would rather forget.

It's definitely worth noting that Bob Rock didn't "make" them do anything. The songs were already written, Rock just gave them the big production. The Black Album is my yardstick for most things, but it's definitely stripped back in technical playing terms, but of course being technical doesn't = mean good songwriting. The album doesn't have the best flow, and I tend to zone out after Of Wolf and Man. Also, for a seminal heavy metal album there's almost zero double bass drum work on it. I still love it though. It's a fantastic entry level heavy metal album for folk wanting to get into the genre, and let me be clear that there's nothing wrong with that. Instantly bludgeoning noobs with Aborted or Burzum tracks when they may be coming from another genre isn't going to help get them into it, but The Black Album is a very smooth transition which is melodic enough to be familiar, but is still quite heavy.

I LOVE the Black Album, and it's not necessarily my favorite (THAT distinction goes to Ride The 🌩). But it was well produced (maybe TOO well!), well written, brilliantly planned out, and showcased wonderful lyrics as well as great music.
In short, I LOVE the Black Album, and would barely change a thing.

    1. Master of Puppets
    2. ...And Justice for All
    3. Metallica
    4. Kill 'em All
    5. Ride the Lightning
I'm really not that big a fan of Metallica's instrumentals. They tend to be overlong and even more repetitive than even their longest songs with vocals (and Disposable Heroes is one of my absolute favorites). Ride the Lightning has proportionally as almost as much filler as the black album, depending on what exactly you consider filler songs. The only thing really hurting Kill 'em All is production value and that extra creative boost a better producer could have provided.
I love Metallica, period. I've followed you for a while so I know you do, too. I don't think they've released a bad album. Less than stellar songs? Sure. That's to be expected from anyone. Obviously, all of this is ultimately subjective, but as I've gotten older, I've stopped caring about what I wish a band would do or what I expected from an album. I'll give it a listen. If I like it, I like it and I probably will for a long time. If I don't like it, I'll come back to it and give it another chance later. If I still don't like it, then it's probably just not for me, and that's fine. I struggled with that with Bullet for My Valentine. I really love their first three albums. When Temper Temper came out (I saw them live during that tour and for Fever), I wasn't impressed. There were moments of greatness, but the album generally felt a little thin and empty (I've since come around to appreciating it more than I did originally, but it's still bottom two for me). So I was ecstatic when they released Venom. It felt like a return to form, combining that big-budget Black Album production sound with their chunky, speedy riffing. I had figured this would be permanent, considering they admitted in interviews that Temper Temper fell flat and they heard that fans were disappointed and wanted to do right by them. So when Gravity came out, I was really disappointed that it seemed they had taken a tiny aspect (a flavor, really, not a full ingredient) from Venom and used that as the basis for the entire new album. I wasn't interested. I tried to give it a chance, then a second and third chance. It just wasn't for me. And not only did I not like the sound, they ousted their drummer unceremoniously (Moose isn't the greatest drummer, but he didn't deserve the disrespect at all), and it really just put a sour taste in my mouth. Hopefully their next release is something I'm interested in again, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm still a BFMV fan, I suppose, and I will always love the songs and albums I love, but I can admit when I don't like something and move on. It's just not worth my time or energy with so much music out there waiting for me to find it.
So, has Metallica had some missteps (in my own estimation)? Of course. I'm not huge on their instrumentals, like I said, and I don't really see the appeal of the S&M albums. Lulu isn't a thing. It never happened. St. Anger is a really intense bottle full of emotion expressed in a raw, heartfelt way. Is it rough? Absolutely, and I love it for that. Metallica doesn't censor itself. They write what they want to write in that moment and don't look back. I think my only real critique of the band is that Kirk really needs to figure out how to back up his files. And also that I wish they could have kept Jason around, but I'm glad for Rob's involvement. Metallica has been my favorite band since high school and they might just always be.

Hey, I am a big fan, I never really comment on videos but I felt like I should say this to you.
I am a huge Metallica fan, my friend is a big Metallica fan too but he doesn’t like how I only like them and how they are the only metal band I technically listen to, I try not listening to most metal because I don’t know if it is satanic. No one else is a big Metallica and talks about them besides you (on RUclips), when I found your channel it inspired me to play bass even more, it told me about cliff and I thought lars was my favorite (I’m a drummer). After seeing the cliff burton hardest to easiest video and seeing the part about live at day on the green I watched the whole video and loved the way he played, you can tell he loves bass and wants to show how good he is, he also likes a challenge. I have baby hands so bass is kinda hard to learn right now but I don’t care, cliff also seems like the type of guy you would like to hang out with. Thanks for giving me the chance info about Metallica, your the best. And one last thing, what’s a good and non expensive bass I should buy?

Great content Andriy. Your evaluation of the Black Album is absolutely on point. If My Friend Of Misery was an instrumental with the chorus cut, and the bass intro from the 1997 Cunning Stuns, hell it’d be an amazing piece of work. The tonnage of the album is that of perfection to the ears, and the vocals are great. It was a point in which Metallica wanted to continue their metal sound, yet they were at a loss on HOW to do so. That’s why they lost all direction after the album with further album creation, ie Load, Reload, “the album we don’t speak of”, etc. Kirk makes multiple remarks on how lost they were on holding a grasp on the metal sound that everyone wanted. If they had a better guideline and help as to do so, I think Metallica after the black album could’ve held real steady. If only James hadn’t blown his vocals in the Black Album production, lol.

The Black Album was the other way Metallica could take after MoP, in Justice they just did everything wrong, per say, They over played riff structures, didn´t played musically and just went to "more is better", actually the fact that AJFA is a great metal album is damn miracle!, if you take the album in context, how was made, how the songs where made, and so many things the album shouldn´t work, but it does beautifully, roof that Metallica could do no wrong at the time i guess. The Black album (far from taking it safe) just went the other way, a more musically driven project in wich every note was thought and is in the right place because they decided that way, like in MoP but a bit less progressive, some of the solos on the album are way underrated and are actually quite tricky to play at times, the Intro for Enter Sandman is a thing of beauty and how music is done, the album also has a better flow itself not going every song over 6 minutes that in hint sight might be "Metallica was less progressive" or whatever, but actually gave the album more room to breathe and was way better paced. In my humble opinion Metallica was at their best in their first five albums and the Black Album is at least better than KEA RTL and arguments can be done of why it might be better than RTL and AJFA.

    Thank you!
I fucking hate that song because of that chorus. Jason wanted it to be an instrumental. Unfortunately he wrote it when Metallica (James) wanted no part in making long complex songs so they made it into that. The solo is cool doe.

By the way, I like dome Hardwired songs better than dome filler stuff on the Black Album

I was 16 when the Black Album came out. Was a big fan of 80s Meticalla. I stop following the band after Black. Might have been because every band in my town was playing Enter Sandman to death.

Frank Poperowitz Here in Argentina we started to listen to Metal thanks to AJFA and TBA. It’s true that Metallica started to reach mainstream audiences at this point but at least it show us the Metal world back in the 90s
