Totally agree about the older E class looking better. In fact I've not changed my 2018 E class that I had from new because I just love the elegant looks, and especially those lovely crystal rear lights with the double bars. So classy and understated. The new ones are a bit too in-your face. E class drivers are rather introverted characters I think and don't want to show off too much. I would feel a bit embarrassed with those so obvious three pointed star lights. Look at me I'm in a Merc! No thanks, but I guess they want to expand the sales into new people.

5 series for me, not looking for elegance for my executive car. My only gripe with the 5 series is BMW’s decision to remove the tactile feedback from their steering. Other than that I’d still take the 540i drive w/executive package.

I like the looks of the 5 series, especially from the side and rear better than the E Class. But I am still leaning E Class because I want a wagon and the BMW X3 that I have is a rough ride.
