    Hello Ken, fantastic introductory video.
    I've been interested in transitioning my career to cybersecurity technical writing. I have been a freelance copywriter in unrelated fields (construction, industrial, etc.) for a few years now, but also hold a Bachelor's in Cybersecurity that I haven't used (about 4 years post grad).
    Do you think these two qualifications are enough to land a position? I do not have specific technical writing experience, just copy. Or should I be pursuing a way of gaining technical writing experience before applying? Thank you.

      Yes, I suggest looking at job descriptions to see what tasks you are expected to do. For example, creating a white paper. Then pick a few companies you want to work at and pretend you are building that paper for them. Now that gives you a writing sample you can use for applications. I also suggest joining the cybersecurity marketing society group because you might be able to find some side projects you can do for one of the marketing executives in the group.

      So, review jobs like this - www.indeed.com/viewjob?jk=22b56b9c731569de and then build a project for the job. This particular JD talks about zero trust network architecture, so you could build a simple guide that explains what that is and how it’s important for the organization and include a discussion in the guide about cybersecurity risk and how ZTNA can help reduce risk. That guide hits some of the key areas they are asking for in the job description. And I suggest looking up companies and applying through their website instead of job boards because they normally reach out to website applicants before the ones from job boards.

    Hi Ken. Do you think it's worth it to get a cert in Cybersecurity? Like a cert that focuses on the fundamentals? I have a writing degree but I don't have a background in Cybersecurity.

    • @CyberLifeTV
      @CyberLifeTV  Год назад +3

      If your goal is to work as a technical writer then you don’t need to get a cert. Most companies are just looking for you to be familiar with cybersecurity terminology. I would suggest picking a few companies you might want to work at and then build a few projects as if you were working for them already, then connect with their marketing team on LinkedIn and ask to get feedback on your project. Most will give feedback and some might create a job for you.

    Hello, Do you have any course recommendations for entry level technical writers? Thanks.

    • @CyberLifeTV
      @CyberLifeTV  2 месяца назад

      If you mean courses that teach you technical writing, then Udemy probably has the lowest price options followed by classes through your local community college (if you’re in the US).

      Check your local Community College. If that is not your style, udemy will work as well.

    How can I find a technical writer job for a cybersecurity company when I don't know much about cybersecurity? I have been researching cybersecurity and AI a lot, but my previous positions don't hold that title. I am a strong technical writer with lots of experience, but companies will not hire me unless my resume says "cybersecurity" on it.

    • @CyberLifeTV
      @CyberLifeTV  Месяц назад

      If you have experience writing technical documentation (e.g., user guides, whitepapers, etc) then having "cybersecurity" on your resume shouldn't make any difference.
      Cybersecurity isn't one thing - it has a ton of areas. And AI has been around for decades. Generative AI is what everyone is excited about these days, but that's also been in use for at least a decade.
      Are you getting interviews and no job offers? If yes, that's an issue with your job interview skills and not your resume.
      If you're not getting any job interviews:
      These days, if you are applying through LinkedIn, Indeed, etc then the more likely issue is the company has over 1,000 people that applied for the same job.
      Google search specific areas of cybersecurity and look at the company websites to see if they have openings.
      Look for jobs that don't say technical writer, but where some of your skills could be applied.
      For example, this is a technical marketing job at Cloud Flare. You could learn the basics of the technical info they are looking for in the JD and show how you would write a single technical marketing document for them and submit that with your application.
      boards.greenhouse.io/cloudflare/jobs/5976278?gh_jid=5976278
      Look at cybersecurity conference website sponsor lists (Black hat USA, RSA, individual vendor conferences like plunk and Pax8, AWS and other cloud provider conferences, etc).
      Look at the lower level sponsor companies and look at their websites for jobs. If they don't have anything listed as open, see if you can find contact info.
      Create one sample document for their company and send it to them with a message about how you'd like to help out. That might lead to W2 but also might lead to 1099 work.
      It's important to think outside of the box.
      Everyone and their mother is searching for "technical writer jobs" on social media and Google search, so you need to figure out how you can either apply your skills to a different role or find the places they are not searching.

    Can you transition from a technical writer to GRC?

    • @CyberLifeTV
      @CyberLifeTV  2 месяца назад

      Yes. It depends on the company you work for. Many people start as a technical writer just to get a cybersecurity company on their resume and to network within the company to get different jobs. I’ve known people in the past that started as technical writers and then the company created analyst and engineer roles for them. The same can happen with GRC roles. If you currently work in technical writing, then I suggest finding open roles at cybersecurity companies. After you get hired and show them you are a high performing team member, it becomes much easier to transition into the job you want.
