I thought technical writers all make 6 figures minimum....... Has the field been flooded with people and the pay come down?

Depends on the industry you work in. SaaS technical writers often make over 6 figures. Same with medical content writers. It also depends on your background. Those with engineering backgrounds tend to make over 6 figures.

Most technical writers are not going to make anywhere near $100K in the US. Maybe a few in NYC or San Francisco that have an advanced skill set that work for top companies that have a lot of experience.
In the Midwest I'd say most earn between $40K right of college to $80K max..maybe in Chicago with lots of experience...if you manage a tech writing dept you can earn more.
