Thanks I appreciate your interest. I'm already working on another project. Perhaps I'll circle back to the gargoyle in the future.

@Cousin Jack Carving, how did you do the stone effect painting on the gargoyle? Im trying the gargoyle but in basswood.

Hi Alan! The foam tends to have a surface that lends itself to the stone effect. I started with a coat of gray paint and then I applied the antiquing that I demonstrated in this video. How to Paint & Antique a Wood Carving

Thanks for the info but, I think I’ll stick with wood. 👌😎

I agree, it won't replace woodcarving for me. I intend to use now and then.

Interesting you said it takes the same amount of force to muscle through it? I was thinking about trying HDU to introduce my kids into carving. Also, have you tried using a wood burner with it?

Thanks for your question. Yes, I would compare it to a quality piece of basswood in terms of the carving effort. There are specialty electronic hot knife tools that can be used as well but I would not want to expose myself to the fumes from the burning urethane so I have not used a hot knife and I did not used my wood burner. Kids can be introduced to soap carving as well as carving things like carrots or potatoes.

Do you need to wear a mask when cutting this foam, I know you can buy also electric cutting tools to do so. This is I have read the dust from the foam due to its contents is extremely bad.

Thanks for your question. Wearing a mask is always an option. I did not wear one because I was carving with hand tools, not rotary tools like a Dremel. If I were using a Dremel I would definitely wear a mask. Happy carving!

ezcarving is no longer a supplier of HDU, any other suggestions?

    • @whittling

Hi Bessie, Some of the home improvement stores might carry HDU. I would also look for local sign shops that use HDU for making custom signs. They might have off cuts (scrap) pieces that they don’t need.
