The Leupold Paradox | Mk5 2-10x

- Somehow Leupold has all the right ingredients for the perfect scope.
But so consistently comes up short.
The Mk5 2-10 is probably the closet yet, but the price tag to performance ratio really leaves a lot to be desired.

you absolutely killed it with the rattle can on that rifle.
I need a Brass Facts/Bob Ross "Joys of Krylon" crossover
2 grand for a dookie reticle, no illumination, is heavy for the class, and you're basically forced into getting their mount. Good glass and a good low power is the bare minimum. It's gonna take more than lipstick and a pretty dress to get my cash. I appreciate your in-depth and down to earth reviews, it's always a good watch.
It really pissed me off when they dropped the MKAR line and "replaced" it with the subpar for the money VX3HD line.
I found my non illum model for 1500 on primary arms a couple months ago. It’s pretty good at the 1500 price point. Wholly depends on the individuals preferences in the end. I like it. Hard to ignore the nightforce 2.5-20 at 2,000 dollar price tag though, among others options I’m sure. Overall, your getting a good durable optic with excellent glass quality and internals. Is it a bargain at 2,000-2500? No it is not 😂
@@brettshook785 my sentiment's the same. It's definitely not a bargain, but it's a good optic. However, for the MSRP, good glass and durable is literally the bare minimum.
Excellent video great criticisms. Its important to be critical when you have a product this expensive.
“Who’s dialing 30mils on a 2-10?”
People shooting subsonic 300blk at 600yards.
It’s me. I’m doing it 😂
Yup try 9x18 at 300 it's hilarious
Ya I was thinking big-bore and subsonic shooters would both love that feature.
@@bobborlog1677what the hell have you mounted a scope onto that shoots 9mm makarov
@@bobborlog1677 You have a scope… on a Makarov?
Lmao I'm trying to find the right optic for the 300 mini fix I just ordered
Great job, Assfacts. Y'all and Hop continue to have a solid concept of what makes scopes good / bad. And for 2.5k you should indeed nitpick. That pricepoint is a killer.
I still love how good primary arms did with the 2.5-10. It’s just all around good. Not the best, not the worst, it’s affordable. Easy shooting, easy hitting.
I went with 3-18x SLx and absolutely love it. Build quality is on par with their 2.5-10x GLx, but it's obviously a different package. Love em all!
Leupold now reserved for the rich
@@investigativeoutcomes9343The rich don't buy Leupold lol.
I wish they would have made it in 2nd focal plane.
well if your using it at long medium range the 1st focal helps a lot unless you keep it on full power or are shooting point blank or something. nice to have a mil grid that stays mil at all magnification.@@qwertyui859
Leupold, unironically, had the potential to drop the best-selling, best-rated, most hyped optic in the tactical world in the past decade, if not longer..................and then they put that reticle in it.
Even if they put a better reticle and illum in it and lowered the price to $1500
What is the point of a 2-10
The PLXc covers the tactical to mid range use better with lighter weight and less size and only 2x less at max
The Mk5HD 3.6-18x covers the mid-long range niche far better, with better obj diameter and it's within TWO OZ of this 2-10
When will this dumb gwot meme die already
@@DD-hz3ts I agree it may not be the optic you need for your rifle, but their release of it just baffles my mind.
2-10 is fantastic for an 18-20 inch small caliber(556) SPR style gun. It just needs to stay a lightweight optic with good wind/range holds.
Thanks. Don't have any money these days but I still enjoy hearing your voice and seeing the nice footage.
and I enjoy seeing you in the comment section repeatedly.
I know its personal preference but I would love an ACSS reticle for this thing. Or at least a Christmas tree with holds.
hell yes.
As long as that stupid Chevron gets replaced with a nice dot and cross like on the meopta I'm happy
If any of you want Leupold quality on a budget-ish, I'm using one of the old 4.5-14 LRP FFP (CCH reticle) scopes as my SPR optic. It fits the bill very nicely paired with an offset dot. Picked mine up used for under $800. Freaking love that thing.
I have the same scope and can confirm it is excellent. Totally bombproof too.
The rattlecan job on that rifle turned out amazing
I am really glad you take the time and money to review a bunch of this shit to sift through it all for the mfers who cannot afford to to buy more than one kitted out AR15. Thank you becuase it's a very valuable resource for anyone to use.
Even without monetary constraints....
What is the use of more than one rifle?
@@whiterabit09 I ask this question too. I have an AR 10 and AR 15, so perhaps I'm a hypocrite, but I just don't understand having multiple of the same class of rifles. People who have multiple AR15s or AKs come to mind. Sure, if you've got the money for a 'gun room', go for it. It's cool, fun, and something to show off to your friends. Also a fantastic resource during/after SHTF for trade and arming others.
That’s a great no nonsense clean reticle. It’s a great scope that does EXACTLY what it was designed to do. It lacks bells and whistles because bells and whistles narrow use.
Excellent review, as always. Also, that's a nice paint job.
That's a realllly good looking paint job
Would you look at that paint job? Just look at that?
Just going to say it, NF 2.5-10. Comes with illumination, 30mm tube, ranging, choice of reticle. The eye box is pretty tight and no special coatings to make the color pop. The parallax adjustment could be better but isn't overly fickle. Price $1600. So far (1k plus rounds) takes the abuse of Scar 17 with the reciprocating sledgehammer known to destroy even premium optics.
Hell, NX8 2.5-20
@@bradleypeterson2208 depends on weight considerations. Also the Steiner T6xi scope line is very reasonable. Europtic has the 2.5-15 for under $1600 last I checked. With my 2.5-10x I can clearly distinguish eyes, nose, chin hands at 1900 yards. I can also see a 1' tall white PVC well head. 10x does more then ppl give it credit for. You jump from 22oz at 2.5-10x to 34oz with the 2.5-20x. but you won't see wind current or bullet holes on targets with 10x. It's all a compromise in what you want.
Thanks for the honest review. And big thanks for keeping consistent with the Nova footage at the end! 🤙🏽
Can’t wait for the Huxwrx Flow 556K review!
“I covered it in $2 of Krylon” got me good
Best down to earth. Real world reviews period.
Very well presented and articulated. Thanks for the honest reviews. Keep up the good work. I’ll have to stick with my GLX PA 2.5x-10x ACSS griffin mil reticle 😊
That paint job is absolutely beautiful
I think the VX-5HD 2-10X42 CDS-ZL2 ILLUM Firedot with a custom dial would get most of the benefits, at 1/2 the price and 5oz less weight.
Great review and love the analogies. It seems for years companies put their focus on long range shooting scopes and then LPVO's. Maybe they're starting to play catch up in the MPVO's but should be better than what it seems. But for the money that Leupold wants for this scope, I think they're insane!
For the jUsT aS GoOd option at a quarter of the price, the Burris Veracity 2-10x has been a treat to use. Been running it a few months with no plans to upgrade. No urge to piggyback a dot. The FFP makes a great simple crosshair that is thick enough for quick target acquisition up close. Have to add their clamp on quick throw lever or it adjusts fairly stiff. Insane upgrade over the 1-6x strike eagle it replaced.
I love that you gave anthlon a bot of love their, for their price I'd argue they're best in class, and it comes with the full feature suite. I'm hoping get their 3-18 MOA to replay my 2-12 on my 20" 6.5 creed build
“Lee-oh-pold” 😆
Just having fun, love you BrassFacts
Rumor has it, Leupold will be dropping better reticles for the 2-10 before year end. I am holding out to see if that happens since that is my biggest gripe for now, well that, and the $500 illumination tax.
So far, that hasn't happened...
I would be more interested in this scope if the reticle wasn’t doo doo
Same here..
Most distance shooting is done by dialing turrets, Christmas tree reticles are for people who don't really shoot much
@@Chato4570😂😂😂😂😂
@@Chato4570wtf kind of shooting school did you go to?
@@peachfuds the kind where I dial for distance and hold for wind.
So basically what you’re saying is we need a primary arms and leupold collaboration like back in the good ole days with the PA/Trijicon ACSS Acog 😂
Excellent review, BF.....thanks
Oof... yeah, that's a $700 feature set at a $2500 price point.
I do like my NXS 2.5-10x42. That eye box is comfy.
basically same stats as my beloved GLx 2.5-10x
@@BrassFacts The GLx has some major selling points over the NXS when it comes to features. Where the NXS shines is boring reliability, surgically accurate turret tracking, and being tough as nails. After the nuclear apocalypse, long after the GLx has returned to the alum dust from which it came, future archaeologists will carve an NXS out of a second-ice-age glacier and gasp a collective "meh."
@@CutlassOutdoorsinteresting take on the nxs cause they specifically came out with the nx8 and atacr to make them actually durable
@@mrs.vasquezz not true. The NXS was used on the Mk12 and has the same durability as the ATACR and NX8. The NX8 and ATACR just have more features and ED glass. They all have the same durability.
Very comfy indeed. It’s the scope all these are trying to better
Thanks again for great review points!
Thanks for the honesty
New rifle? I dig the paint. Looks good.
That camo job is nice 👍
Like everything else Leupold, the reticle and price leave a lot to be desired
Leupolds are for dialing turrets. Those who know about BDCs, know.
@@NoNo_IStay dial somebody that cares
@@NoNo_IStayHilarious because most people that do precision shooting with dials don't buy Leupold because they had rep of making garbage turrets after making turrets that were mismatched to the reticles.
Love the setup
Excellent review
Great review.
$2000 scope defeated by $30 sunglasses. Used to work for Oakley and some of the optical distortion from cheap sunglasses is crazy (Von Zipper was always the worst).
Oakley's, although expensive, are all made here in America from a proprietary polycarbonate and are all optically correct (neutral).
I use to be a Oakley fan, still own a pair but the lens quality falls well short of Maui Jim's.
Oakleys' polycarbonate gets worse every year. So much chromatic aberration. I've gone back to Trivex and am loving it!
Only ever spent $1k+ on two optics -- Leupold Mk4 4.5-14x50 and a TA31F ACOG. Those were also for my first two rifles and quite quickly realized going that hard every time is just a waste of money. 10+ years and a lot of rifle builds later, balling on a budget is the way to go -- Primary Arms, Vortex, etc.
Thank you for the heads up good video
Thank you for the review, I will stick with my Atibal 1-12
I just want a 2-12x with Japanese glass and a modern reticle in the 24 oz range. This seems to be far too much to ask.
Arkens new 1-8 might tickle your fancy
Imagine thousands on optics over and over again just to come out and say "it's really not that great."
Lol! Thanks a bunch, Mr.Facts.
Good job 👊
I got the Vortex 2-10 on sale from optics planet in 2017. Glad i did.
I bought a VX 5 for a dangerous game rifle and the 2x absolutely shocked me. It's incredible. I know exactly what you meant about the 2x being hard to explain.
Awesome vid
Good stuff here. Thanks.
I’ve been using the Burris 35mm QD Pepr mount and it’s pretty nice.
I’m kinda a leupold fanboy but you’re not wrong. Also gave me a good laugh too. Thanks for the great video
I think this whole scope was made to be geared toward more of a compact long range hunting scope instead of a dmr ar15ish role. For someone who wants to be able to use 2x for in close hunting and still have the ability to dial for a target at 1000+ without having a giant optic on their rifle. I realize that may be more of a niche market though.
Babe wake up it’s brass facts friday
Thank you
I ❤️ Brass facts 😩
I really like the Mark 5 HDs. I have yet to use one of these, but I have a 3.6x18 and a 5x25 and love them. I didn't (and wouldn't) pay the full MSRP for them, though.
Steiner t6xi 2.5-15. That’s the next optic that needs to be reviewed for MPVO. Best option imo.
Thank you.
I have my 2-10x MK5 mounted on a Bobro mount with piggyback plate system
“Oh well that sounds like a good scope to get into sounds like it’s budgetary made and can be useful” “wait it’s $2000”
Great video
Well, glad I saw this before I tried to pick one up.
Good data point
This scope with the cch reticle would be smoking hot
What do you think about the new Mark 4HD 2.5-10x42? Pretty tempting at 21.5 oz. No adjustable parallax though unfortunately.
0:43 damn, that is a nice paint job. It just never looks dirty, especially when it is.
Between the mark 5, primary arms, and athlon, which scope do you pick up the reticle the fastest, when using the lowest power?
As in, are the bigger reticles on the cheaper scopes perceived faster, or does the mark 5 do fine with lines only and better glass?
Great conclusion, no illumination for 2,000 dollars contributed to me going with a different product.
The things you point out that I cannot unsee on my scopes...it hurts.
athlon 2-12 is best thing out there. good reticle, locking turrets, zero stop, illum in a shorter light (ish) package. glass is better than my NF2-10. ill run the athlon till some else does it better.
All great points. And the Razor 1-10 is $2500 for a garbage 10x. It ain't cheep but it ain't trash.
Vortex, leupold, etc really need to get on the dual focal plane train.
Being that it’s a Leupold, I’m just glad it didn’t come with a duplex reticle.
it could be worse yeah haha.
Okay
What 2-10 is worth the money?
And what reticle would you have on said optic?
Random question to bump the algo:
Do you know if a Holosun LS321 will mount under without obstruction a Holosun HS510c?
I’d really love to see you do a review on the Delta Stryker HD line.
What are your thoughts on the new strike eagle 3-18 ffp with xmas tree reticle that came out this year 2023?
What's your opinion on the SLx or GLx 4-16x from Primary Arms, if you have one? Does it have the same high-end disappointment that the 3-18x has that you mentioned in the 3-18x video or is the 16x actually usable?
Basically, I _want_ to like the 3-18x, but if the high end isn't usable (or is unpleasant) then I'd rather save a bit of money and limit my magnification, but actually be able to use all of said magnification.
According to my stores optics guy, leupold makes killer 5x and 3x multiplication variable optics. So 2-10 and 3-9 leupold scopes are supposed to be superb
Leupold is really due for another HAMR or D-EVO phase in their product line
Picked up a like new D-Evo awhile ago for around 1k and immediately fell in love with it. It has a number of things I'd like to see different, but it fills an interesting niche inverting the concept of lpvo with offset red dot.
Just the premise of adding a crisp 6x etched reticle below a full size red dot for around the same weight as a 3x magnifier could have been a game changer if it picked up more traction.
Love to see a comparison to the new Mk4 2.5-10. Seems like Leupold addressed most of your concerns (but still with same reticle while adding illumination at a lower cost). How big of an issue is the loss of side focus?
Bro has expanded the watch collection fr
You should really just just sit down and espouse all of your knowledge about LPVO’s some day, i would appreciate it given im interested in learning the knowledge one has after playing with dozens of them for 1000’s of rounds. Cheers, and awesome work
I have 30 34 mm scopes and the 34 ones just seem better regardless of cost. thoughts? Cheers.
At this price point, weight, feature set, etc, it would seem you're better off going with the 3-18.
how do (did) you like the Leupold mount? It's a lot less $ than the Badger / Reptilla versions and still seems to work fine?
Is the Delta Stryker 1x6 SFP still a relevant scope and what’s your opinion on it? It seems to be the best I’ve found in the 800.00 range. Thanks Brass.
Nice shot at the end there.
Hard to get behind the hype of the MkV 2-10 when we can get a Vortex 1-10 for about the same money. Hopefully the 2-10 and 3-18 will get some better reticle options and then I will shut up.
Issue is also the crazy premium that Leupold adds for illumination.
35mm and reticle options make it like a “no-go zone” in France for me
Great review of this feature rich scope. When considering all of the positive aspects of this scope I have ask myself, "if this scope will enable me to shot any better"? When considering that Leupold VX-5HD scopes produce a similar image with a different reticle, why is this "tactical" model selling for twice the price. I can't think of any reticle design that produces 1,000 dollars worth of value. I suspect that there is a lot of hype on the MPVO optical solution and Leupold wants to cash in on it. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not for me since I like getting value for my money. I will give it to Leupold for producing a great scope that few people can afford.
@BrassFacts I wonder if you're going to review the SWFA 2.5-10x32 SS Ultralight Riflescope?
You don't pronounce Leukemia "Leia-Kemia" do you?
You ever run into rattlesnakes tucked into the crevices up there? Seems like it would be a good spot to soak up the sun during the day, and during the night the retained heat in the rocks would keep them warm at night…just a random though 🤷🏻♂
I was thinking the same dam thing “ Great minds think alike” I heard a few stories of rattlesnakes falling out of trees 🌲 on people 🥴 btw I’m not scared of snakes but I’m not trying to get poked with that deadly ☠️ ass venom!
