Everyone should own an Elcan at least once so we can achieve collective consciousness on why its so mid.
No thank you! Lol! I try to be wise and learn from the mistakes of others instead of learning things the hard way and making the mistake myself.
@@leroyjenkins4811 some mistakes you NEED to make because some things are only mistakes for other people. Owning an RX-8 is a mistake for most people, the RX-8 has been my longest owned car to this day, one that I adore and wrench on weekly by choice. I repacked and basically remade that engine some 3 years ago, and have had no issues since. Hi Elcan Engineer.

Is there any plans for a modernized reticle?
@@BrassFacts We actually do commonly customize the reticle to suit the needs of our military customers :)
What kind of features would you be looking for?
@@soybombiambomb
A ton of things actually
1)No question, Elcans are used on shorter 556 rifles far more than than the BDC configured 14.5". You can do a lot to make the BDC work, such as a custom non 100m zero, but it's very surprising that there really aren't any SBR/pistol ~11" configured BDCs.
2) The lines are thick. Way to thick. Fine for the leading lines, and center dot. But the BDC portion is basically size 18 font bold.
It's tough to see targets that are anything other than fullsized under them. Not to point to a competitor but trijicon ta31s have a very nice fine BDC.
Speed is irrelevant because no one is snapping a 1 second split 300 yard shot.
3) Wind holds. Even a single 10mph or 5mph one would be enough to allow for bracketing. 2 would be best. Once again, needs to be in a smaller "font" if possible.
4) yards configured bdc.
Thanks for listening
Why acss version release? I hear it's in your shop...
If you make an elcan with wind holds, I will buy it. It might be the only thing that would get me to replace the ELCAN on my current favorite rifle.

Same here. Used them. Loved them. My Eotechs were fragile back then. The M68 was a perfect red dot but no mag. We sometimes would put ACOGS behind them since no such thing as a magnifier then. Then this beauty came out and I was in love. Still use them but feel like I have to justify to all the trend-snobs at the gun store.
That’s so dumb bro, just because I drove a 1992 Isuzu Rodeo in high school and was very use to it doesn’t mean I should now spend way too much money on another one now that I’m a grown ass man. Make better decisions.
I'm not a fan of the Elcan itself, but I am a fan of the concept, and am really surprised nobody else has done their own take on it.
Especially now with how much PA has invested into small lightweight prism optics, a 2 magnification toggle prism seems like it would be right up their alley
it's been tried, wolf made one.
@@BrassFacts weren't they just the importer? could've sworn they were in made RU. That said, they were "ok" on price ($600ish IIRC) but the optical quality was pretty poor. I looked into one a few years back for my 5.56 AK project.
@@BrassFacts Huh, I remember looking into other options like the Elcan and not finding anything.
Just looked it up and it came out way back in 2015? That's an eternity ago in terms of what has been developed in the intervening years...and at a price that isn't much lower than the Elcan while apparently just being overall worse.
Time for a non Russian company to give it a go!
@@pdxmarine1430 it would be similarly priced to the elcan
It seems it takes just around 1000 bucks to make a duty grade fixed prism scope.
Add 200-300 for the 1x.
And then 200-300 for the mechanism
@@BrassFacts while I'd never call the PA SLx duty grade, it's fairly robust and can be had for under 250 for the 1x and under 350 for the 5x I would imagine putting both sets of glass and a mechanism for switching between them could be done for around 400 putting the price tag for the whole thing at around 1k
Would it be duty grade? No.
Would it be robust enough for the vast majority of people and really popular as an alternative to an LPVO or red dot magnifier combo? I think it would, though granted I've not done any consumer research on it, but I think an affordable version of the Elcan concept, especially if they put out in an aesthetically pleasing body would be pretty damn appealing to a ton of people

As someone who never uses 2-5 on my lpvo an elcan is exactly what I need. Having used it extensively on both a 249 and 240 I came to love it despite its downsides. Friendship ended with HOP, now ELCAN is my best friend
I've had one for 2 years. Absolutely love it. The more you use it, the better it gets. I slapped a sro on top and leave it on 4x. ⚡
Love my Elcan. Bought brand new to make sure I didn’t get something someone beat the shit out of. Came with a ARD and caps. Don’t regret it one bit. Glass is clear and reticle is great. Red dot is bright like the aimpoint T2. It truly feels like it’s built like a tank
I’ve used these overseas, and loved them. But I definitely see why people view this as “mid”. I am happy to see it get love.
Bought one a while back because of the iconic nature of it. Ended up getting a second one and now a third 1.5/6. Can honestly say I love them. I also have many other top tier optics and for something with magnification, they are my “go-to” without question.
Can you share your experience with the 1.5/6? Thanks!
Funny you mention the P4Xi, just snagged one on Eurooptic $469 this week. Love it so much, even with only 1-4 the glass & reticle are TOP notch.
If you're in combat, and most of your aren't, this is the best optic out there on a mobile .308 platform.
The elcan is seriously the whole reason I got into ARs in the first place. I remember back in 2009 I was looking through pictures and found this on several rifles. It took me a long while to figure out the exact name of it and worked towards setting up my rifle just like a block 1 with the elcan. I've been using it for the past 14 years and while I admit I did try the ACOG and all that, they just don't quite match the feel of an elcan to me. It hasn't failed me once. I upgraded it to the 2032 version recently as the original ones I had were the 1/3N batteries. To be fair, I think in the 11 years that I owned it before I switched, I only remember chaning the battery just once because it has this funny carboard insert that I thought was to be removed.
Impressive to see a rifle with scratches, shooting from different positions, an optic that's not a 1-50x LPVO AND a mention of the tactical games (rifleman shouldn't be fat?) in one video. Bravo!
I’m glad you tackled the “weight” complaint. It weighs exactly the same as a razor.
The optic everyone sleeps on (and one you need to review) is the fixed 4x elcan specter. Way cheaper than the DR, usually cheaper than the ACOG, and its better than the acog imo. I was using a TA11 + RMR combo and switched to the 4x elcan specter with RMR. While I loved my TA11, I prefer the elcan.
And before anyone makes the joke, I know, Canada sucks big time 💔 but at least back when times were better we gave you this
Thought those were discontinued?
@@noscopesallowed8128 did they really? Man, that's disappointing, its an amazing optic
The Elcan is great in situations where you are rapidly transitioning from close-quarters to distance. For instance, an urban environment where you may go from clearing a room, to firing out a window at the balcony of a building several blocks away, and then engaging targets that suddenly appear in a closer building. Perhaps even more applicable in temperate forests where targets could pop out of a bush 3 feet away or take shots at you from 3 miles away.
Is it a must have? Definitely not, but it has a place.
Items should check boxes on your checklist. Dude that was put so well.
Got an Elcan on my AUG, perfect optic for it since the AUG is also a great general purpose choice. At its price tag I wouldnt get it unless it checks every box you are looking for for a particular set up. For me it did.
It's amazing on the AUG. The eye relief is practically set to the same length of pull as the AUG.
why do you think the ADF standard issues it for all our EF88's
The ELCAN needs no defense. Buy once, cry once. I've used the ELCAN since the early years of GWOT. If I was able to pick it, I used it. The ELCAN rules all.
Does everyingthing an aim point with a magnifier can for twice the money, twice the weight and a worse experience
@@jb76489spoken like a true gun community trendster. You don’t have to like it but it is superior in many ways to red dot and mag combo. Also has a few cons as well, as do all optic variations. The elcan is some pretty amazing tech that no one else has gotten quite right. It’s worth every Penny and has never let me down when it mattered. It made me very fast while maintaining my cheek weld. Wish I could switch magnification without moving my firing hand (southpaw) but that’s life. No need to be snarky when most of the advocates have lots of real-life experience using them.
@@jb76489never used yours in inclement weather huh

Love watching your videos on my work break
Please don’t loose your humor in your videos. They help make them as good as they are. Informative but enjoyable.
good video on the elcan, having used it and the acog both while in the rangers I think you hit most the points on the head. Only things I can say is there is a reason why socom switched mostly to the elcan and eotech from the acog and aimpoint, that reason is more features and lifespan of the aiming system. Only time I saw elcans die were when they were mounted to the scar, mk48 or m240b but those are all very heavy recoil systems that jarred most sights into malfunction. We made it mandatory for heavier weapons to go back to using the M145 which was also made by specter we had been using those since before I got in back in 06.
yeah, the older elcans also were reaaaaaaaly prone to dying to gritty sand. The new ones aren't immune either,.
@@BrassFacts we didnt have any die from sand but we did from the violent shock the scar produced and when they attempted to put them on mk48 and m240b's. key to keeping them clicking with the sand is to have a air compressor and know the points that sand would get into the gears and clean it after each mission along with nods and all other sensative equipment.
I broke an M145 during a 14 month deployment. Unfortunately there was no replacement for it so I just spent months with an unzeroed 145 that couldn't be properly adjusted and had to walk my rounds in using it as just a general reference point. I hated that optic so much. The specter dr is definitely an improvement.
Similar experience here. We had issues with the older Eotechs failing, so mostly used the M68. Sometimes with ACOG mounted behind. Wild West shit back then. Elcan was such a damned treat when we got them. I never used the XPS/magnifier combo while in and it still doesn’t excite me.
"Goobers Group" made me spit my coffee 😂
One pro I could think of the Elcan dominating in compared to every other option is in conjunction with a clip-on thermal:
1.) The short profile allows for rail-estate to mount a compact thermal device where the length of LPVOs might not (especially on a stable section of rail).
2.) The fast 1-4x throw lever would allow for toggling between a magnified image to a view of the entire thermal screen, where fixed-power scopes like the acog can not (if the display screen has enough resolution, magnifying on the screen is no worse than digital zoom from the thermal itself).
3.) The etched reticle would easily contrast against the brightness of the thermal screen where rds/holographic reticles might not.
Though I currently have an acog mounted to my duty rifle, I am definitely considering an elcan if I start to prefer clip-on over head-mounted thermal.
I wanted one so bad. I finally found a guy at my local range who had one and when I looked through it I knew I would’ve been disappointed.
The eye relief on 1x is Abismal. Wish I could tolerate it, but Ik I will not train enough to get around it
Elcan SpecterDR 1x/4x is easily my favorite optic. ACOG TA31 4x32's are a close second.

was it a good burrito.
@@BrassFacts T'was a great burrito. I scheduled it to occur with my weekly "Brass Facts and Burritos" lunch break on Fridays
that optic belongs in a muse- I mean on a Block II
That was admittedly a long time ago
I put my elcan on an ARMS 38 EX swan sleeve and put a holosun 407 on top for passive aiming. And as far as battery life goes, ive left it on at the second brightest setting for a year and it didnt die. I love it, and for a general purpose versatile fighting rifle it cant be beaten in my personal opinion
I will say one area the elcan excells in is form factor. Its pretty similar in size and rail space as a ACOG or a larger red dot like a comp M4.
Top notch optic in my opinion, amazing optics and bulletproof, will work without batteries. Great option, not the end all in every case, but nothing is. Looking for my second one.
Thank you for your review and video.
Funny how many people are offended by your personal choice for your personal gun for your personal use.
As much as I want to like, and eventuality own, the Elcan, I’ve found a fixed 4x or 5x prism and an offset red dot to be equally effective, faster to change between magnification, cheaper, more durable, and lighter.
You’re not wrong, and that setup I very equivalent. I think at that point, it’s just preference and individual school of thought. I have both and I they both have some benefit over the other.
That’s great until you need to switch sides clearing a building and your red dot forces you to nearly enter the hallway. Offset optics may be fine for gamers, but terrible for combat. They are also useless while wearing NVG.
Nice review! I have always been a big ACOG fan but want an ELCAN
I sold mine ...I will never live down the regret of that sale ..I really miss my Elcan

"...actually, really just marines."
Thanks for the correction XD
can't let the army boys get credit for stuff they didn't do.
Sometimes you just like what you like , as long as you use it and know it .
Imo the Elcan is the best "fighting" optic. You get a 1x/4x with decent eye relief and FOV just as good as the 4x Acogs...and you don't have to run a chin weld or change head position to switch power level. That alone puts the Elcan over the Acog.
But you're also getting illumination that is legitimately red dot bright, and the battery life is actually usable. That's a huge plus over an Lpvo for me but also most Acogs because tritium isn't that useful at night.
The LED Acog has a 1.5 year battery life.
You dont actually need to change head position with the ACOG. I've learned that the RMR sits at the perfect height for you to just rotate the rifle a little, like you would with an offset dot, and the dot will line up with your left eye. Little weird and takes some getting used to, but let's you keep your head in the same spot to switch magnification.
"Decent eye relief like the ACOG" so the dogshit terrible eye relief of the acog is somehow a plus now ?
@@slipknnnothe says FOV just as good as an ACOG. I know 8months to late
I plan to mate two Primary Arms microprisms when the 5x comes out. It'll be a downright monstrosity but cheaper and lighter than an ELCAN.
The only thing that could make the Elcan cooler is if they spelled it "Spectre" instead of "Specter."
Don't forget the trijicon vcog 1-6x for about the same price, although having been issued both I prefer the elcan. The eye box is much more forgiving also I'm never going to be shooting where I have to have the 6x.
Good video! I appreciate the commitment to a GWOT optic. I'm kind of falling for a VCOG 1-6 I got on tacswap for $900.
the vcog is sweet, I like everything about it, except the weight
Did you get it used? I've never seen new prices close to that.
I’d like to get a VCOG next but have never seen them in any lgs here. Have an Elcan on my go-to and ACOG TA31 and TA11 on other rifles but would really like to try a VCOG
A 1-6 VCOG weighs same as an Elcan.
I have always thought you'd prevail over the dastardly Hop on this one. Just remember that like all Chinese infiltration cyborgs he has a code word that will shut him off. It is probably not a pejorative as he uses them all himself.
the code work probably has something to do with elcans... or rechargeable batteries
The Elcan comes up for sale used at a higher rate than others for a reason. It’s got nostalgia, that’s about it. I carried an M16A4 in Iraq in 2004 and now want to own one for nostalgia reasons, not because it was actually top notch.
I love the elcan, finally someone who likes it almost as much as I do
All good data points. I think it boils down to best tool for the job being performed. There will never be a one size fits all optic just like there will never be a one size fits all rifle. Will there be bridge type products? Sure. In the end, everything has to compromise on one thing to bring something else.
fuck the fact that i’m actually watching this on my lunch break with 10 minutes left… this guy is good
I speak from experience.
I prefer the acog with 45 degree offset rmr. If one or the other breaks you have a backup. If the elcan breaks, you're using buis. I do like the elcan though, and would definitely use it if it was my only option.
I am still waiting to get a elcan, you have great taste man!
I've always like the idea of a fixed 1x/4x fixed zoom. I got roped into the LPVO route, I like that also, but i think for my uses fixed zooms could be more useful.
Agreed. Fixed zooms are the way to go. We don’t use anything in between. So why waste time SLOWLY turning a power ring?
Nice to see iDubbbz getting into the prepared citizen space.
I’m pretty intrigued by the Specter TR 1/3/9. It’s heavy and expensive but it checks many boxes for me for my ar 10 setup. I’ll wait for you to try one out
I probably never will. Sorry
Those are some neat looking rail covers, what are they? And the handguard, for that matter?

@@BrassFacts this response is all the validation I need to buy a 2nd elcan
In a world of abundant LPVO’s, I’ll take an elcan any day. I have so many optics and I still put the elcan as number 1. I was one of the old school guys that mounted eotechs or M68’s in front of our ACOGs, because that made sense for what we had access to. The Elcan filled that gap and did it well.
Just my opinion, but seems many haters have never used one. Especially in combat. They don’t break. They are fast. You don’t waste time with intermediate magnification and turning a slow-ass power ring. They are fast. They are the same weight as an LPVO/mount. I just love it. Didi mention fast?
There are a few updates it could use (miniaturization, titanium body for reduced weight, improved/slimmer QD mounts, RMR-ready top plate, maybe go 1-6?).
also make it radioactive again so batteries become optional.
Mine rides so low I had to take off my PEQ-15 and replace with a MAWL-C. I love using it now.

Anyhow good elcan defense but price vs needs at 95% of the time does not do it any favors with me. Since I am new here, alredy converted, quik ask on the type of the backpack with camo net featured on it - and what kind of plate/chest rig are you currently runnig are into? Thx and keep it up nice work.
plates aren't made anymore, just buy a hesco 3 or 4.
Chest rig is a velocity system hybrid, the pack is a platatac spur.
@@BrassFacts top. Thx for the info.
Impressive, very nice. Let's see Hop's Elcan.
My man looking like Borg with that wild down lead.
