My family and I followed these directions, and they were spot on!!! We're a family with 4 kiddos (ages 11, 10, 5, and an infant). My husband wore the baby. I think a stroller on this trail would have been too much. The hike was a challenge, but it was so worth it!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Hiking Guy for this spot on video and article with the play by play directions!!!!
Another hike accomplished today with your help. Although the address on the website brought me to street parking, I just walked north and the path was there. I went with my 10 year old daughter and we got lost around the water tank, we walked around it while holding the gates not knowing the actual trail was below us and we took the wrong turn lol. Thanks for these videos. It's helping me stay out of casinos.
Hey 👋 - just a quick note to say we followed your directions when we hiked the Hollywood sign last month and they were SPOT ON! Thanks. Our 10, 8 and 6 year old children completed the hike easily and it was our favourite thing to do in LA. Also, as we were staying on Hollywood Blvd, we just walked straight from our hotel!
My son and I hiked this trail today to the top of Mt Lee, based on your helpful instructions. We also took the path to the gate and the view from below the sign. Whew! What a lot of walking. We noticed the trail got very busy with locals and very hot around noon. Everything was just as you said--thanks so much!
Awesome, glad you had a fun time. Yea, it's a popular trail and it does pretty hot mid-day. It's fun to do it early in the morning when the crowds and temps aren't so bad. Either way, a good workout! Happy trails!
I finally went on this hike for the first time out of the blue 3 days ago and unprepared. BUT, I am glad I did it and learned a lot. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time because I was told while walking up that they close the gates at dusk and if they do lock the gates you are locked in but I was determined to do this hike. It was a huge challenge for me with having a bad back of sciatica and I was feeling it already at the half way point. Where this video started you coming down is where I was going to give up when a group from Wisconsin encouraged me to keep going and I did. I was in such crucial pain at that point. One of them stayed with me the whole time and talked me though it until we reached the top. I was so grateful but I did pay the price. But for me for being the first time I was happy I finally reached my goal. Sad part is when I was walking down and I had to rush because it was getting dark I was worried that were going to lock the gate one me and there was no way I was going to spend the night there....LOL.... All I can say is give yourself time and enjoy the scenery because it's gorgeous, bring plenty of water and good walking shoes. Sadly I won't be able to this one again since I hurt my knee going down and my back got worse. But I will go another start not so aggressive way because it was fun. I am yet to go in front of the sign. Met so many great people along the way. Thank you again for this video. It really did help me and encouraged me to do it even more. Great motivation!
I went today and got out at 8:25 PM yes I risked it and they gates were closed and we were locked In thank God they opened it for me .. an attendant without me even asking just opened the gate.. I was running down because I had family members waiting since they didn't continue the trail behind the sign..
Thank you so so much for this video. My daughter and I are taking this hike for the first time and I had no clue where to go. You made this so much easier. Awesome video!
Just came back home (Boston) from LA. This video helped me scale Mt. Lee, so THANK YOU! I ended up getting to the summit again by using the Wisdom Tree Trail overlooking Burbank - that was STEEP. This one - Brush Canyon Trail - is much better on the knees :)
Very nice and to the point! I was born and raised in Southern California, and currently live in Florida. My wife and I are flying out to see family at the end ofJuly, and she mentioned hiking to the sign. How long does this hike take?
Your video was very informative. We took a left to the sign view instead of a right to be behind the sign. My question is how far is it from that fork of the road to the flag?
yup some locals that live right by it and sometimes google fucks it up because they dont want ppl going up their for some odd fucking reason. Its honestly Fucked up
HikingGuy.com yes, I read that previous to the video. Still a bit confused on if the time frame and distance you listed is just from the lot to the sign or round trip?
Is this trail up to date? I know you uploaded this video only 2 months ago but I heard that there are some starting point areas that are closed down. I am planning to go this week by following your directions. Please let me know! Thanks!
HikingGuy.com i just made it, but i never hike i just drive directly to beachwood to deronda drive up to the top but never continued to the gate fence and walk, cause its already dark just took the picture up close qiuetly from residence but as im too late of long drive its at night then drove down hill to 101 south up to 5 south.
Thanks a lot...how do you think this hike would be for a 7 year old boy? He's fit and active, im just worried that he might get bored on the way...we're planning to hike this 3 weeks from now..Any input would be greatly appreciated....thank you so much for all the info you provided...they're very very helpful !
I just spoke with a woman who brought her 9 year old daughter and had the same reservations. She did it and it was fun all the way around. Each kid is different but I'd give it a try. You could also do some research on local fauna and wildlife and work some kind of scavenger hunt angle in.
Thank you so much for sharing ! You put me in a very optimistic side! Now, im getting so excited...I'm more excited about this hike than going to Universal Studios! Again...thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your video and all the details regarding this hike...You rock!
Wow dude, the fog/clouds makes it so awesome! Thanks for taking us along on this hike. One question though, are there any mountain lions up around that area?
Good question - there is actually one! www.latimes.com/projects/la-me-griffith-park-mountain-lion/ I wouldn't worry about it though, you have a better chance of being killed by a cow though: www.theinertia.com/mountain/which-wild-animal-is-statistically-most-likely-to-attack-you/
Hiking With Shawn This trail is well traveled so really the only time to worry about cats is if you're up there VERY early and by yourself. Cats are usually most active at dusk and dawn. Oh and they usually attack from behind and above. They always go for the back of the neck. Enjoy!
Was the hike going back down narrow/scary and near the edge of a cliff? (I'm kind of afraid of heights, but would love to do this). I like the trail that you took going up.
Thanks Chris! I see the trail is open from 8AM to 6PM. If I want to see the sunrise from the top, is there anyway to start the hike as early as 6AM? May be I can park outside of the gate (in a legal parking area) if it’s closed and walk?
I usually get there way before 8am and the gate is open, so give that a try. And yea, you could try parking out side the gate but not sure of the ticketing situation.... have fun...
HikingGuy.com Only reason they filled it was too many people were braking arms and wrists and suing. Really sucked!!! On a clear night we could see all the way to the L.A. Lighthouse out of San Pedro I think it was. Skate, drink a beer on the wall, look down at Manns Chinese and repeat.
Many thanks for this guide. I understand that getting close to the actual letters is strictly forbidden and results in a hefty fine. Not that I would want to attempt this; just saying.
Yea, I think being behind them is actually better anyway, you can see them with LA in front of you. Just getting up close with the letters wouldn't actually get ya much.
My family and I followed these directions, and they were spot on!!! We're a family with 4 kiddos (ages 11, 10, 5, and an infant). My husband wore the baby. Definitely a great walk with help of this video - very informative! For 20+ years I wanted to do this walk, and today I finally did.

Thank you so so much for this video. My daughter and I are taking this hike for the first time and I had no clue where to go. You made this so much easier. Awesome video!
Sweet, thanks so much for the note and glad it was helpful. Happy hiking!
I’ll be going for the first time in a couple of weeks! This trail is still accessible despite the beachwood closure?
Yes, this is an official route that doesn't use Beechwood / Hollyridge
Is it kid friendly? My daughter is 3yrs old... Or is it pretty gnarly?
Amazing, helpful video. So appreciative!
Thank you 🙏👍
Video was very informative...thanku for speaking clear slow and concise so we fully understand !! Great Job Narrating !!
Thanks so much for posting your hikes with all the information you need on Hiking.com

Thank you for sharing
Best video yet. Thanks! If I put Griffith Park in my gps, will it bring me to the parking lot?
No, you need to use the specific parking lot mentioned in the blog post here: hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/best-la-hikes/easy-hollywood-sign-hike/
Im Pissed i googled searched vs going straight to YT for a direct answer. Thanks 4 info. My third try will be successful . Today i saw a coyote !
*fox
yup some locals that live right by it and sometimes google fucks it up because they dont want ppl going up their for some odd fucking reason. Its honestly Fucked up
Do many people hike the Burbank peak trail? Or the Wildwood canyon trail? These are easily accessible from Burbank, but I never hear much about them.
Great video. How many miles is this hike one-way?
3 miles - hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/best-la-hikes/easy-hollywood-sign-hike/
How long (time/distance) from car back to car for this hike? Love the video!
Thanks so much! All the details including distance here: hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/best-la-hikes/easy-hollywood-sign-hike/
HikingGuy.com yes, I read that previous to the video. Still a bit confused on if the time frame and distance you listed is just from the lot to the sign or round trip?
Jackee M gotcha - it's roundtrip
Very informative! Will try this route.
How many hours total back and forth?
Check out the link in the description for time, distance, etc. and have fun!
Is this hike still possible with covid closures?
It has been open but check the "Alerts & Closures" link in the guide on my website.
Is this trail up to date? I know you uploaded this video only 2 months ago but I heard that there are some starting point areas that are closed down. I am planning to go this week by following your directions. Please let me know! Thanks!
Monica C yes this is up to date
Sometimes It's "Closed Down" but not really
is this trail still open and the best way to get to the Hollywood sign?
yes and yes
I'm hiking the HOLLYWOOD sign today early like at 7:AM
How do you hike to behind the sign for sunrise or sunset? Do the gates lock right away or does it have a set time?
is there any bathroom booth on the trail in case ?
Nope, check out the website for all the details.
What time does the gates open on Saturday, because I'm about to do this hike with my brother, my best friend, and me. Thanks.
Thanks for this. ;-)

@@mirah2k Ha no problem, yea, the friend who did it brought a little picnic, snacks, made it an adventure, think that's the key. Have fun!
Nice. I'm wondering if you get to be in front of the sign or only hike behind it?
You pass in front of it on the way up
I hiked up there pre-9/11, and I believe they prohibited going up there for a while after that. Obviously, that was a long time ago.
thank you. do they charge for parking? i ask. so i can take cash .
Nope, parking is free. All the details here:hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/best-la-hikes/easy-hollywood-sign-hike/

Is the trail open right now during covid shut downs?
Give the phone number in the guide a call to confirm
Can it be done with electric bicycle ?
Was the hike going back down narrow/scary and near the edge of a cliff? (I'm kind of afraid of heights, but would love to do this).
I like the trail that you took going up.
No scary edges, all the trails are very wide, so you'll be fine!

HikingGuy.com thanks. Yes. I went there today at 6AM and the gate was open. I had a good time. Thanks 😊
Would you recommend hiking up to the Hollywood sign near sunset and returning after its dark?
I haven't done that but it could be great. Just Googled the park hours and it say 24 hours, so you should be good in that regard.
How long is the hike up and back?
hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/best-la-hikes/easy-hollywood-sign-hike/
Nice! I just made a video hiking the hollywood sign too!!
You ever hike Errol Flynn place?
You can see it from Runyon, never actually went up close or anything.

Check out the web page in the description. This video was shot early morning (6am).

Is it good for strollers?
It's doable aside from the last 50 feet. You'll need a jogging stroller though, the little ones will be tough.
I almost died
?
Chemtrails
Shouldn’t we be careful with animals
Nope
