    It's frustrating that so many of these YT roofing channels dwell on speed and the flashier aspects of the trade. I really like what you've done here, concentrating on a specific and common source of leaks and walked the viewer through the best practices. Thanks.

    Type 2/3 tar does become brittle when cold....mostly used on tar & gravel low slope or flat. Plastic Cement which is more commonly used for some instances on a shingle roof becomes hard when cold....but is reinforced with fiberglass and mostly deteriorates due to U.V rays, and time. Awesome video as usual!

    My daughter just bought a house here in Trussville Alabama. The previous owner had a roof put on it's been on for 4 years now. We noticed a leak in the dining room, I up in the attic took a look sure enough there was a leak. I used to Roofing back when I was younger. The person who did the roofing will not honor the warranty. Because if not transferable, transferable or not. He should have done the job right, this has nothing to do a warranty. But has everything to do with doing the prep work right. So not 64 years old, I've got to get my sorry butt up there and fix it myself cuz he will not honor it. I love your video good information

      Depending. Vinyl siding ya relatively easy to pop off enough to do thag and resecure the siding. Without fully removing it just enough for access.
      But that old fuckjng aluminum siding. So crappy to try to remove and reinstall without bend/dent/scuffing etc.
      But I will still fight to I/w and synthetic up the wall always even with old wall flash in place if their not replacing it, and always always new step flashing.

      Lois Calma if you’re talking about drip edge, that’s a tricky one to paint under. You can sort of bend it up, but it’s difficult to bend back down into place afterwards. I’d assume taping it off and painting around it would be the simplest way. Never though of that before. Good question.

      If you are to remove the shingles and re flash the wall. Material varies on the length of the wall. Also the amount of shingles that need to be replaced. A bundle of shingles ranges from $10-35 each and they cover approx 33sq/ft and step flashing come in bundles of 50 and cost about $25 per bundle of step flashing.

    Dylan, to be honest - this is another well done video. But it's always better to replace the step-flashing. At 4:40 you are covering the flashing with a shingle and the flashing has holes in it. So there's a chance of water getting under the shingle (if it gets there, of course), and we do not want that. Also, you're installing new architectural shingles on there, so why keep the old and holey step flashing? When we argue with insurance companies about whether to replace or reuse them, some of them tell us that step flashing is reusable, and we say no one does that. Now an adjuster, if he puts some effort into it, can find this video and say, "Look, even a pro like Dylan is reusing them!"))) Do you see where I am going with this?)) Please replace the step flashing )))

    • @freddozer1399
      @freddozer1399 9 месяцев назад

      I can understand why the step flashing was not replaced ! The siding needs to come off to do a new install of step flashing. Most insurance companies are pro-rating the roof today like a car tire warranty. After 25 years old, they insist your roof is no longer covered. I suppose they cover nothing under the roof either ? In this case that is heavy step flashing in good shape. I would of put a dab of roof cement on each nail hole, + it would seal shingle in place. The vid was exactly what I was looing for. I have a lifetime roof with mold in the back next to a shed dormer. I want to replave the shingles "oakridge" with the new mold guard shingles. I understand the warranty on mold is only ten years. However I am very aware where you coming from. Unfortunatly insurance companies have zero oversight for the constumer (owner). I bought a auto warranty policy, 4 K for 5-years. Bumper to bumper. My electric window stopped working. I called and they said it was covered. Than they said, you need to answer a few questions. 1st question . Do you need to remove anything from the door to work on the window motor ? My response ! "of course the window motor is inside the door not on the front seat. Their answer. That is not a covered , anything else we can do for you today ? I went to BBB. too many complaints, and was recomended "not to buy the warranty" Thanks for the vid Dylan.

    • @goshanovalenco7499

      So what did you do with that window motor?

  • @SuperCuttysark
    @SuperCuttysark 3 года назад

    Why does it work this way and not a single long piece on top of all the shingles

    • @DoItWithDill
      @DoItWithDill  3 года назад +1

      If it’s only on top of the shingles, water will get under it. If it’s all under the shingles water can get below the shingles and track sideways.
      This method, forces any water that gets under the shingles back to the surface.

    There's a very obvious reason we call it _step_ _flashing._ The way the previous roofer did this, he might as well have just used a continuous piece of metal. He missed the whole point of it being a series of separate pieces.
