Love these Videos and hope to see you continue making these. Hope to see you continue traveling too. Your Central Asia Videos were great, please return there sometime !
I've only watched this one video so far, and I'm hooked. I have lived in Latvia for 10 years it's great to see some of the lesser known areas getting some love.
Howdy Dude, Long time no see. I am glad you are back. I also like the videos of Latvia. Please take a look at what I have created so far. Your encouragement inspired me to create. I bought a new DJI Osmo Pocket 3. I have only used it twice. I was going to use it yesterday. But I forgot and left the SD card in the laptop at home so I had to use my Samsung S23 FE.
how do you know which language to speak to people - Latvian or Russian? Is this a more Russian speaking part of Riga or is Russian the default language with old people in case they don't speak Latvia and you don't want to 'offend' them? This is common in countries, like mine Wales, where the indigenous language has been minoritised.
There are few points to make. In Latvia we still have about 40% russian speakers, they might speak latvian also, but their primary language is russian. Whilst the younger generation has “latvianised” more, older generatation like you see in a video hasn’t bothered to learn latvian because it’s entirely possible to live with only russian, especially in some neighboorhoods in Riga. And, indeed, some parts of Riga are more predominantly russian. Hope that answers :)
@@theruudy great answer, and sort of what I expected. I'll be interesting to see what the situation will be in say 30 years time. I think it's good to be bilingual or trilingual, but I hope Latvian becomes the premier language of all in Riga and Latvia. Thanks for posting about 'normal', unglamarous part of Latvian life - invaluable. Diolch am rannu.
@@SionTJobbins Latvian is the main language and also only official language :) I believe we have to be more concerned about migration and preserving our culture in the future, seing what’s happening in a west it’s a big threat. Diolch am wylio :)
@@theruudy diolch am yr ateb! A phob nerth i'r iaith Latfieg! I think one huge challenge to Latfian, like most European languages and nations is that English will become the linguafranca of all immigrants - Americans, Asians, Ukrainians, Africans etc - and they won't bother learning Latvian. With such a low birth rate (again like all European nations) there will be a need for immigrants, the challenge is that Latvian keeps it's primacy as a language of communication by all in the state. Would be interesting to learn how Latvia tries to integrate non-Latvian speakers into the state. Pob lwc!
@@SionTJobbins Yes, this already are challanges for many European nations, just somewhere “globalisation” has started earlier and somewhere it comes little later. I have actually made a video (my latest one) where I visit our only migrant reception centre in Latvia, you can find some facts there :)
To be occupied, you have to be free. Latvia was always under someone, Swedes, Russians, Germans, etc. I can't stop wondering when i hear shit like that
@theruudy I have opened Wikipedia and typed in "palaces in Latvia". Everything what's listed it's either German or Russian, house of blackheads, aglone, cirnava, mezotne, rundale etc. Is there any Latvian king or queen? Where did they reside ?
@@GuayusaPure What exactly are you trying to accomplish here? Yes, we had a rough history for a small nation, but we were occupied by Soviet Union as an independent country. What more is there to discuss?

Loved the video and fascinated by your language skills! Keep it up !
It’s very common for latvians to speak 3 languages, but thank you! Appreciate it :)

Why are you speaking Russian with everyone? Why not Latvian?
Because older generation in these neighboorhoods tend to speak russian…
