  • I’m proud of our new state seal and flag. The old versions celebrated Indigenous erasure, settler colonialism, deforestation, and violence. These speak to our topography and uniqueness as a state in a way we can all celebrate and learn from. Thank you to everyone who participated in the process. It’s a win for all Minnesotans. Anton Treuer shares about Minnesota's flag history and symbolism and the potential impact of the new changes. #minnesota #flag #MinnesotaFlag #history #minnesotaseal

As an outsider, this new MN flag looks like a REAL FLAG unlike what some YT users called the "seal on a bedsheet" old flag - which could NOT be easily distinguished from many other state flags unless you know what to look for in the first place! The new MN flag will be something visitors will buy from a souvenir shop, and MN sport fans will be waving or hanging this in sports stadiums/arenas in the coming years!

I'm pleased with the flag. I think the simplicity is nice, and you get from it the North Star and the waters of Minnesota. The seal is very nice, with imagery we all can relate to. I read that some people object to the Dakota language. It's really sad that so many white people feel uncomfortable about things that highlight Native Americans and place names in Native American languages. They point to "illegal language" or featuring only one group, but some people feel very uncomfortable with the state's first people (or other non-white people) getting highlighted in ways that celebrate things that are not white. They feel threatened in complex ways, perhaps because they want to make sure not to feel shame. Thank you for posting this, Anton. I've always admired the voice you put out there. 🌟

Actually i liked the seal motto in French. The French were great friends of the Ojibwe and recorded early presettlement history that would otherwise have been lost.

    Good morning ,
What do I think of the new flag?
I think the new flag was designed by many Miinnesotans. When the committee asked for volunteer advice I was one of those early volunteers who constructively participated, I know I wasn't the only one to volunteer which is pretty awesome.
I think promoting the new design as designed by many Minnesotans is a positive way to move forward - as designing the new flag was not intended to be a vanity project for one Minnesotan.
Even those who objected to the three stripes for various reasons had their voices heard, they can't say they didn't get the participate because they did.
So many voices from so many places and backgrounds had a hand in designing this flag and it could have turned into a camel but it didn't it's actually a wonderful Thoroughbred horse made up of the best parts of Minnesota! I have already seen sugar cookies with this design on it that look absolutely sweet - pun intended!
Forgive my long narrative to "I am happy with it" but one thing I learned from this process the narrative is just as important as the simple expression such as a design or stating " I'm happy with it".
