Ted and Dougal's first exchange in the first episode:
"Morning, Ted!"
"Morning, Dougal!"
Their final exchange in the last episode:
"Night, Dougal!"
"Night, Ted!"
Cleverly done.
I didn't notice that.
Secret Guy neither did I thats amazing work on behalf of the writers
@@Ryan23H It is perfect, but was never planned like that, the original ending was Ted on the ledge with the suicidal Father Kevin character. The 'Goodnight' dialogue is recycled from an earlier episode, as Dermot had already died when the decision was made to change it.
@@richardwilliams4900 i never knew that thanks for sharing
@@richardwilliams4900 Yeah it's dialogue from the 'New Jack City' episode I think. It was a great idea to close the episode though, and definitely better than Ted's 'suicide' scene that was originally planned.
RIP Dermot Morgan
fred fred his son taught in my school haha
And RIP Frank Kelly
Father Ted is just one of those few shows I never get tired of watching.
There was not one bad episode in the series.
Keith. So many British comedies like that black adder, faulty towers. This American Loves British comedies. I'm Alan Partridge bitch's.
Ghost of Reagan since was Father Ted british🤔🤔
It was set in Ireland, but seeing as Ireland is part of the UK it's British.
Same
Chills down my spine whenever I watch the ending, knowing Dermot passed just right after. Such a wonderful actor he was. Father Ted will always be my favourite. Love from Malaysia.
I fully conquer what a loss best comedy ever made , Nottingham England 🏴
Father Ted will never grow old, future generations will always see the humour. Dermot was a naturally talented funny man, the youtube videos I have seen of him on chat shows are brilliant. Dermot in many ways reminded me of Robin Williams, they both had energy and wit in abundance .
Father ted will never get old or irrelevant .......well, it will when religion is accepted to be false and just a load of man made nonsense .
Sadly, he had already passed before the 3rd season was shown..RIP Dermot..
@@philipparogers5613 concur?
Can't be the Only one to Find This a Bit Emotional ☺
Nope. One of the best comedies to come out of Ireland ... many of Ireland's best funnies in it.
RIP the big man.
Rookiereece its sad cos the guy who played father ted died shortly after the end of filming the 3rd series so it was a homage n a goodbye maybe he should of gone to the states
joiganja Not gonna disagree with you there.
Just finished it and loved it!
It was for me too, when I first seen this at 10 years old.
It really hurts watching this scene, knowing that Dermot died of a heart attack less than 24 hours after it was filmed...
Sad Yea agreed Also A little creepy I mean evreyone of the cast including him thought after this they would all go on to new projects Sadly Only three Did. RIP dermot
Quite a ery thought isn't it I think it's sad not so much what he had done but what he could had gone on to do
This along with the ending to 'Blackadder Goes Forth' is one of the saddest bitter-sweet endings to a sitcom.
In 200 years time. Many so called celebrities will have faded into obscurity. But Father Ted will be as popular as ever. Dermot Morgan and Frank Kelly, as well as Ardal O'Hanlon and Pauline McLynn will be forever a part of Irish culture and Father Ted will live on
Ardal O'Hanlon has done a great job in moving on and not letting himself become typecast. I saw him doing his live standup a couple of years ago and he said that Dougal couldn't be further removed from the real him, he also said it had been so long he probably couldn't perform the Dougal character even if required to.
Pauline McLynn has become fed up of the show and likes to try and distance herself from it. She even turns down invitations to talk about it and appear in documentaries.
Well said 👏 💖
I think this end montage was added after the series was filmed. Dermot Morgan passed away before the first episode of this series debuted on Channel Four, so I think that end montage was added in that episode that very week as a mark of respect and celebration of Dermot's work on the show.
Timeless comedy. Love it. [Ben]
Grumpy Retro Gamers that's correct, the original ending was that Father Ted was on the window ledge with Father Kevin (Tommy Tiernan) at the priests conference. Probably better that this ending was used instead.
I always wondered... has that "original" ending actually ever been released anywhere? Like as a rare DVD extra or exclusive at Tedfest or something? Morbid as it is, I really want to see what the original ending was going to be....
I don't think the original ending has ever been seen publicly. I have read the scripted version, it's in the official series scripts book, but I think the filmed version has been kept hidden away.
I've heard they never filmed the scripted version, because they realised it wasn't funny. Then Dermot died and they were glad they didn't do it
They definitely filmed it because it was screened before a test audience, but the test audience didn't respond to it well and they knew they'd have to change it. But they said it just didn't work and would have been changed anyway even if Dermot hadn't died.
Ah God rest him.
And Frank too RIP
Nigel Murphy a great bunch of lads!
Maybe the best comedy all we Britpop fans watched back in the day. Dermot even got front page on the N.M.E. or Melody Maker. Xmas '96.
I'm a Scottish Kelly : ) @@nigelmurphy6761
And Brendan now too
This entire scene is unnecessarily sad, including the airport part. It feels like an end to a film in a way. And then that montage, just gets me every time.
He died the day after filming that scene.
@@andyelliott8027 That's true he had, but sadly he had already passed away b4 season 3 was aired on TV..
What a Comic genius he was..RIP Dermot..💕
@@andyelliott8027 I don't think that was the final scene he filmed, I believe it was the dance routine at 1:19. He apparently felt unwell and noticed pains in his heart while filming and then died at his London home the following day.
@@mxbx307 The scene with the dance routine was from Think Faster, Father Ted, which was the second episode of the second series. It was broadcast on 15th March 1996, almost two years before Dermot Morgan died on 28 February 1998. If he'd died after filming that scene, we never would have got the third series.
I always think it fits perfectly. It's almost eerie really. Like all this was meant to happen. With Dougal saying forever and ever. The fact that Dermot passed so soon after. It sealed him as father Ted forever. It's like some higher power has said. Right Dermot, you've done what you were put on this earth to do, you can go now. Since then Father Ted has brought so much joy to so many people. It's one of the best sitcoms ever. Plus it's a sitcom about priests.
RIP Dermot Morgan and Frank "Drink"Kelly
I think one of the best tributes to Dermot, the whole cast and writers is the amount of lines from Fr Ted that have become common usage. Go to any big event or protest you'll see a "Down With This Sort Of Thing" placard, or the now common phrases "Go on , Go On ..", That would be an ecumenical matter , money resting in account, etc etc - there is a pretty long list.
Good night Father Ted
This series is so cosy and familiar to me. It reminds me of watching it with my mum when I was a kid. This scene gets me so emotional. I wish Dermot Morgan knew how influential and popular his work was to this day.
Such an emotional ending, it's so sad to think that Dermot died the day after this was filmed
So sad yes. He had been feeling unwell. And even sadder that he could be still with us if he had been seen to. I can't understand how the show wouldn't have had a medical person on board. So sad.
@@CRyan71 he died at home, not sure how a medical person on staff would have helped him. and it was a massive heart attack. even if they knew, probably nothing could have been done.
@@johnnycats5157 maybe. Maybe not. If you are as ill to die from a massive heart attack you must have symptons. I know people alive today who acted on symptons and had triple bypasses. They were only days, hours maybe from death.
@@CRyan71
Not necessarily. You can just have a sudden heart attack or a stroke without any symptoms. That's why you should always get your blood pressure and cholesterol under control, stop smoking, be a healthy weight because you don't see the damage in your blood vessels until it's too late.
Some people get early warning signs like angina (chest pain) or a TIA (ministroke) which serves as a wake up call but I guess, in Dermot's case, he didn't.
RIP
@@wudipest Wasn't it said that people noticed Dermot was looking a bit weary and pasty skinned ? This is a sign of restricted blood flow / oxygen from the heart.
Eventhough i have seen the series hundreds of times, i will never get tired of watching it. I know what is going to happen, but just playing the dvd has a cosy feeling about it. Homely. Though my household is nothing like living on Craggy Island ;-)
It's the Irish Fawlty Towers. Will never get old
Its haunting how Dermot Morgan's final few hours have been televised to the world.
Gone too soon... I never get tired of watching Father Ted. RIP Dermot.
And Frank Kelly (Father Jack) too :(
I always find this whole episode really sad because poor Dermot looked so pale and not well looking at all.😞 Was devastated to hear that he had sadly passed away.
Feck... promised myself I wouldn't cry.
20 years today that Dermot Morgan passed away (also 2 years to the day Jack Kelly died.) Makes an emotional clip even sadder. RIP fathers. 😭💙
Frank Kelly*
Father Ted is one of those shows that just never gets old. I still remember as a kid seeing a preview on channel 4 for a new show starting and thinking it looked pretty good and I'll give it a go. Little did I know I was about to be introduced to my favourite TV show of all time.
I can’t believe Father Ted died less than 24 hours after this scene was shot
He looked very unwell in the last episode it's so sad :(
@@bob-seek-destroy-sd1708 incredibly sad
I think it was actually 1:19 that was the final scene to be shot. He was feeling unwell during filming of that scene and experienced heart and chest pains, then his wife's account of his death says that they were at home, he had walked into the room and again said he felt unwell. Dead very suddenly moments later.
@@mxbx307 No, that scene was from series 2. There was a dancing scene in the final episode in which he experienced chest pains, largely because Tommy Tiernan (Father Kevin) repeatedly flubbed his lines, forcing Dermot to do the dance over and over again. But this airport scene was the final scene filmed.
😢 can't help but cry during the montage at the end. After all the laughs, it ended all so tragically in reality 💔💔💔
This and only fools and horses to me.. are timeless. I watch these every few years, and laugh like it’s the very first time! RIP dermot. Incredible comedian and actor.
I disagree, the very early OFAH episodes have aged dreadfully.
Ahh. That's the way I'll remember Father Ted. Forever kicking Bishop Brennan up the arse.
Such a classic. No one could make a father Ted these days with the same amount of humour
The reason for the slightly awkward cut was because the original ending was to have Ted contemplating suicide. Due to Dermot Morgan's death and test audiences not liking the ending (keep in mind this was the intended finale even before Morgan dying sealed it) they instead changed it to a more heartwarming montage.
ToonReel001 did they ever release the alternative ending?
@@jaybonetacony I'm not sure, though I've never seen it.
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing
He got a heart attack the day after recording this episode and then died 💔💔
Erika M sad
Rest In Peace Dermot Morgan and Frank Kelly.
still get teary eyed when the music swells up, beautiful tribute to a genius comedian, loved Father Ted since I can remember, whole household were mad on it and it still holds up to this day.
I watched the complete series of Father Ted on DVD months ago as I’ve never watched it before growing up and and what can I say, every minute of it made me laugh uncontrollably 😂 Father Ted will forever be a 90s comedy classic and I would watch it any day over Mrs. Brown’s Boys, though I did grow up watching that show, I will admit.
Rest In Peace Dermot Morgan (Father Ted) and Frank Kelly (Father Jack), sad they both died on the same date as my birthday, 18 years each other apart. But both were great actors, let’s not forget that. 🇮🇪🕯️🕯️
Such a great show, a bedrock of irish humour and culture.
Every episode perfection full of quotable characters and scenes
Dermot did not look well in that final shot, the stress really took it's toll on him.
A complete comedy genius who was taken from us far to soon. Making people laugh and be happy is a wonderful thing to do....RIP TED😥🍀💚🇮🇪💚🍀
This and Faulty Towers you can just watch over and over and it never gets old...
In my lifetime I will never get tired watching the greatness of Father Ted and especially the wonderful talents of Dermot, Frank, Ardal & Pauline.
R.I.P Dermot Morgan and Frank Kelly, gone and never be forgotten ever in our lifetimes.
That money was just resting in the account.
Absolute gem of a show....its in my top 3 ever father ted, still game , only fools....
This was when tv was actually good and funny .....this end scene always breaks my heart
Originally it was to end a year later with Ted finding that suicidal priest on the balcony again and saying "Move over a bit."
Yeah. That was cut because they thought it was too dark a way to end the show. Then when Dormot Morgan died, they added this to honor him.
This is one of the best comedy programs of all time, like for example Only fools and horses which was also written by an Irishman.
How was OFAH written by an Irishman? John Sullivan was English, the whole show was completely English culture. I couldn't see anywhere on Wiki that said he was of Irish ancestry, but even if he was, he was still English. I was born and raised in England, I have Irish and Norwegian ancestry but that doesn't make me Irish or Norwegian.
Same here
one of the best, or maybe the best?
Watching the montage at the end of all the episodes and the final of Ted and Dougal saying goodnight to each other and light going out really makes me sad
I watch an episode every single night I love the show so much. Rest in peace Dermot
love all the episodes love this show and all the actors watch all the episodes over and over again Father Ted will never get old
The sheep on the boat will always get me
Still my favourite sitcom ever.
one of the greatest comedies of all time. just priceless
And to think Dermot died the day after they finished filming this episode, 20 years ago today. RIP Dermot...
Still one of the funniest comedies on tv today. You’ve seen it so many times, you know what’s going to happen but you still roar with laughter when it does.
I struggle with this, even after all these years. Funny but massively sad.
one of the very best......like people have said, I never tire of watching over and over.......still fresh...still funny.....and there is almost nothing on the TV that you can say that about nowadays.......I think I could survive with nothing on TV except Father Ted, Dads Army, and Curb your Enthusiasm !!
One of the best, or maybe the best?
Very emotional. An absolute comedy masterpiece and I have great memories watching this show with my family when I was young. I will show it to my children too
I was reading on Wikipedia and links earlier, and saw that Dermot had been saying for some time that he did not wish to continue as Father Ted any longer, as he didn't want to become 'cast' in that role forever as has happened to other actors in the past.
RIP Dermot. What a talent ❤
Best Ending possible, always makes me tearful everytime i watch it
R.I.P Dermot Morgan, careful now
You're still a legend Dermot and we still miss you to this day.
Best show on TV, RIP to the cast who have gone to that Parochial house in the sky
Television will never be the same without Father Ted.
Great show, can't be topped !
I think they ended the series just perfectly.
☮
The airport scene is so painful to watch....seeing Dermot literally hours before his passing, his skin as pale as snow...almost like he's not acting and he's totally burnt out
Probably one of the 3 greatest sitcoms of all time
The only way he will ever get off that fecking island is through the sweet release of death.
Or just by paying back the money that was "resting" in his account :D
Which is close to the truth considering the alternate ending for this episode was going to be back at the "It's great being a priest" set in the following year with Father Kevin being on the ledge with Ted arriving at the ledge, except this time it is not to stop him from jumping but to join him, because he was depressed that the intended trip to America fell through and he would have to stay on Craggy Island forever.
This ending was scrapped due to the fact that the writers thought the ending wasn't funny and considering the fact that Dermot died the day after filming it would just be in bad taste.
From Bishop Brennan killing him?
One of the best comedies ever made so
RIP father ted, you are missed.
Its such a shame this was the last ever episode. If he was still with us we cudda had a new series. RIP Dermot/Frank
It ended when it was at it's best....rip Ted....and Rip Jack...Doyle....we are waiting for you!!!!
Lovely tribute, thanks for posting.
Thanks for the laughs, Dermot.
Same here, never get tired of it. It's just a classic show and will never forget it 😂😂😂❤️❤️❤️
This ending makes the theme song sound completely different.
He died before series 3 aired of a heart attack so that means father ted was going to end anywhere because heart attacks can happen anytime but its even more sad watching it knowing that when it first aired he had died age just 45
Genius.
Just knowing he had to stay in Ireland forever, his heart went bye bye.
Rest in Peace. Just seeing those clips makes me want to dig out the dvds and watch them again, the series is hilarious.
Graham Linehan is a genius.
RIP legends Dermot Morgan and Frank Kelly
His final Goodnight to us all. May he RIP xxx
I always think that Father Ted is a bit like Fawlty Towers or Black Adder, no matter how many times you watch, it still seems new. Thank you for the belly laughs. Go on, go on, go on, you will, you will, you will.
Pretty uncanny ending as it turned out - I’m sure he has St Peter rolling in the heavenly aisles🤣❤️
saddest television moment.
I will cry every time :(
God Rest you sir. 😢
Sadly missed by its many fans, one of the best shows on tv god bless em all
one of the best, or maybe the best?
RIP Dermot Morgan. Taken too young.
Feck R I P Father Ted and Father Jack.. What a Great part of Irish History
RIP Frank Kelly and Dermot Morgan
Originally, the ending was to have Ted jump off the ledge along with the man he saved, but because Dermot Morgan passed away, the ending was scrapped.
Kicking Bishop Brennan up the arse was easily my favourite episode
One of my very favourite comedy’s 🙁
makes me sad that Ted and Jack are dead in real life they died on the exact same day as each other except different years 😢😢😢😢😐😐😐😐😐
:(
Extremely sad. Both are very sadly missed indeed.
Damn you're right, never noticed that.
Now father stack (brendan grace) as well
Down With This Sort Of Thing!!
Buzzy Trombone careful now
careful now.
Apparently there was a scrapped ending where we see that depressed priest back on the ledge of the building, only this time ted is beside him contemplating jumping as well. It was scrapped when he passed on the day after filming, and replaced with this montage.
sad that the show ended so soon but it's still great
This is most wonderful.....oh and many thanks for making my eyes water!
The saddest part is that Dermot Morgan passed away one day after this episode aired.
So sad! One of the greatest comedy series every made…timeless!
RIP Father Ted... he passed away just hours after this was filmed.
It wasent hours it was at least 24 hours later hun
It makes me so sad that there's only 3 seasons of this show, gone too soon just like Dermot Morgan :'(
