My own room literally has all the furniture pushed to the edges... and I really enjoy the freedom of having the free space in the center.

what Chris is referring to is a scenario in which you have an empty room, which is actually quite big(consider the size of an a4 sheet of paper compared to the size of a traditional business card) and you also have no restrictions of having to stick certain objects to the wall such as, as he said, a bed and bookshelves. the reason for placing them next to the wall entirely revolves around functionality , whereas doing this on a design layout does the exact opposite and removes any functionality of both the empty space(one of the core values for good design) and the type.

also bear in mind that you're comparing a 4d environment that you can experience with all your senses, to a 2d poster. I understand he's doing it as well, but in his case it's to illustrate the focal point for your eye.

You don't view your room from the top down, you exist within it.

The analogy of creating areas and spaces as if it was furniture only applies to the living room and kitchen. Of course nobody wants a toilet or sink in the middle of the bathroom

I think another thing to why you shouldn’t put the typography on edges is ( production process) when you print your work it might cut out some details of your typography. So don’t put typography on edges to avoid this problem.

I think the sideways text makes readability difficult. Readability is much more important than looks.

Design is a balance of form and function. This assignment was a poster design, with the goal of trying to make the most interesting layouts with extreme constraints (like the number of typefaces and weights).
