Composing type is like composing music. There needs to be purposeful rhythm and a pattern that becomes recognizable as patterns create unity. This can be interrupted at times with something that violates the pattern that has been established which creates contrast and a point of interest.

The biggest mistake is using Adobe Illustrator for text.
Adobe InDesign is far better for skilled graphic designers who handle and respect the options in the study of typography.
    Tip 2
You made a mistake by having the third column longer/taller than the first two. That mistake might be acceptable for Asian languages going vertical, even if it was in say Japanese, it would have to appear intentional, and this case doesn't.
    Tip 4
The BLT analogy is confusing in how it relates to typography.
A better analogy I use is a totem or ladder. I tell people to break down the importance of the various parts of information in the provided text. What is important?
    For example:
In the invite you were asked to design, is the time more important than the date or location? If yes, how can you make it stand out from the other text? In this case, "time" is at the top of the ladder and the rest is arranged into the ladder from most to least important.
You can now play around with your ladder structure and know the focus points so you don't give power to the least important.
Foundation is more about media type (poster, book, web), colors and font choices, not structure.
Foundation: house, at the beach, glass and metal, oceanic colors
Structure: where will the roof go? Will the glass type change your designs?
Circling back to the analog, Typography will now use the above foundation elements to answer the questions and make a structure based on what is important to communicate.

Hi Chris. A small question if you don't mind. My customers are from Vietnam and they don't like modern design features like negative space or double or quadruple the font sizes and so on. They don't see it as beautiful but instead ugly. They are used to put stuffs into tight spaces and can't stand blank spaces. How can I persuade them? Or how can I apply some of your rules into this "Asian tight style" and still make something beautiful?

    • @hunkosaurusrex

It is difficult to offer advice for a written language I am not familiar with, but, I am familiar with Chinese newsletters and I see that text is very tight and compacted. But Chinese have ads that use open space, to simplify and capture more for us on the product.
What kind of design/media are you working on? Newspaper or invite or something else?
Try focusing on a few parts of the text and make that but there and reduce the least important to smaller text to creat a bit more breathing room. Tell them this helps the eyes of the reader to have their focal point stand out far more than being crammed in.

What the lady says at point 1 is kinda weird. That order can be swapped perfectly, I've seen that in many designs. Ive also seen Chris use this in design in other videos. Its also in the video tuts from Typography 01 - The Futur.
