    In today’s episode, we show you how to fix dark shadows in photoshop.
    Working with Dark Areas
    It can be extremely annoying to deal with dark areas of an image. Using Curves isn’t always the best option because the highlights of the image tend to get blown out as well. We ran into this same problem when trying to use Levels to brighten up dark areas. So with two of our most commonly used techniques rendered useless, we had to find another method that would brighten up the shadows without blowing out the highlights.
    Shadows/Highlights
    Our best option is the Shadows/Highlights options. This allows us to only effect the shadows or only adjust our highlights. This is an extremely powerful tool because of the precision is gives us when working on an image. There is even a way to bring the color back into our image which really helps tie it all together.

    I know nothing about photoshop. Sometimes I just need help adjusting a photo so I can paint it. I never know what I’m doing. I generally find RUclips videos to be to quick and never explain anything. THANK YOU. I’m in a zoom meeting with my class, and trying to figure out how to edit this photo (per my teachers suggestion) so I can paint it for my in class assignment. I’ve watched some videos before this and literally almost gave up. I’m happy I didn’t or I wouldn’t have discovered your channel. Subscribed and happy about it!!! Thank you for a simple quick fix, and I am now get to painting so I won’t fall behind. I paint slow enough as it is.

    I'm a big fan. I've learned so much by watching Aaron's tutorials. I would suggest creating a Smart Object (Filter - Convert for Smart Filter) BEFORE adding in your highlights and shadows. That way your not doing destructive editing.

    I took a screenshot at 0:33 and tested this new method. After that, I tried to lighten the shadows in this image with a curves layer and applied an inverted "apply image" to the layer mask. In my opinion that looks even more realistic than in the video.
    My adjustments for the curves layer are Input: 100 Output: 140

    I like mixing this feature with some basic masking to remove that outer glow, as well as some low opacity and very soft strokes to certain areas of the photos that need them; such as a highlight that gets washed out or some type of circumstance similar to that. Overall, fantastic video!

    Although I was aware of the feature, I enjoyed Aaron's smooth approach. The same tool is available in Lightroom as well, though with a limited options. I use it quite a lot - having a 14 bit .NEF RAW file really gives you a lot of details in the shadows, especially when you underexpose the image intentionally to get faster shutter speed, for example.
    Thanks again and keep those great videos coming.

    Very nice and simple way!!!!
    There's another way to consider also .....
    Use on top of the base-layer a curves adjustment layer ...... don't do anything to it just now .... first, add a mask and on the mask put the output from apply image ...... now inverse the mask and then adjust the curve-layer for the shadows only ......
    easy and simple as well ......

    I love your video tutorials and the talent you possess. I use the Shadow/Highlights tool all the time, but I don't believe you showed the Curves tool properly. You can use Curves far more effectively than you showed. You didn't select multiple points and manipulate them as required.

      Minh Khoa Ngô That is good to hear, but why play it down in this video? Curves give precise control over tonal adjustments. The Shadow/Highlights tool is only adjusting tone curves anyway by using sliders.

    • @lucasfreeman9469
      @lucasfreeman9469 8 лет назад +1

      I was going to say this exact thing, the problem with the dark shadows could have been solved by simply using multiple points with the curves tool. Maybe there are other advantages to using the method Mr. Phlearn Guy showed in this video though that utilizing the curves tool doesn't have.

    • @shifteleven
      @shifteleven 8 лет назад +1

      +1. I looked through the comments to find this. Curves can totally be used for this with more anchor points.
      that said, the shadows highlights module is still a good thing to know about.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 8 лет назад +1

      +Lucas Freeman It offers simplicity. To use Curves correctly takes experience and understanding. The Shadow/Highlights tool is simple and very logical and creates a complex curve very quickly. I often use it instead of Curves. I just believe the video shouldn't have made the Curves tool look clumsy and incapable.

    Hi Phlearnies,
    one question bothers me for quite a time now: How do I remove that tiny little hair on a (girls) forearm (in a photograph)? I heard about some duplicating the layer method (but I’m sure there’s a more Aronesc way to do it)…
    And the other thing is a little tip: every time I start to edit an image, I copy the basic layer and leave it invisible on top of all the other layers, so I can in an instant swap between before and after, without having to click alt/opt and selecting all the relevant layers anew when going back to editing.
    But most of all: thanks for all your valuable and entertaining tutorials, they helped me a lot and brightened more than one day ;-)
    Cheers
    Michael

    I'm not sure if this is a stupid question, but I always felt more than a little confused with the distinction between the concepts of luminance, luminosity and lightness, and how that applies to photo editing and color grading. I looked it up online, but the information is scattered and you can't find it all together in one place. I got even more confused when I tried to think of that in combination with the different blend modes. Any valuable inputs on that? I really don't know who else to ask.

    Good lesson, however, I am curious: Once a Shadows and Highlight adjustment is made, is that same tool still able to be edited after you make an adjustment? I seem to not be able to recall the tool and have it return showing my adjustments and therefore, my adjustments seem destructive to THAT layer. Is there any way to call up and change those edit without staring over?

      +Tomas Ramoska Yes, that is what I would like to know too.
      I just bring up ACR when I need to tweak shadows and highlights

    • @EminoMeneko
      @EminoMeneko 8 лет назад

      +Tomas Ramoska I don't think it is better. Just with curves you can edit several points to achieve the results you want. To me it is just about promoting these options. Editing RAW is always better because you just edit functions which are saved in an XMP file or in a database. Anytime you need to show your file the data source is read. Basically it is non destructive. As soon as you get into image editing you start to be in a destructive kind of processing. Pixels are coded in the file and that's.
      But well RAW dev has its limits too so to make it short the best way is to do as much as possible in developping the RAW and fixing it in image edition software.

    • @corckie555
      @corckie555 8 лет назад

    Hey Aaron - Is there a way to blend several landscape images together - same scene, but from many different times of day, and (importantly) blending the sky together so it isn't a hard transition? So the blend from an afternoon to evening to sunset sky has a smooth transition and not a hard or jarring transition of the different colours? Thanks!
