Great video, there is definitely a lot of nuance with bike sizing and it's great that you kept an open mind and experimented with the variables. Typically manufacturer's recommended sizes can be a bit "out there" for people who ride like you/Dave/myself!
I agree. I'm an older rider who grew up tearing headtubes off of downsized XC frames on Fromme, so my idea of sizing is...off. Picked up an S4 Status and it feels HUGE...but it's fast, smooth, and it still pulls great. Surprisingly easy to manual and jib around. The confidence is there once you get used to it, but I feel like I need to buy a fancy stem cap because it seems like it's in view a lot more often these days!
Chainguide Set-up tip: you can set the top guide lower (closer to chain) if you remove your chain from the chainring. Flip up the top guide, remove chain, loosen 3mm slider bolt, lower the slider, retighten slider bolt to torque spec. Reinstall chain. Flip the top guide back into place and tighten. By removing the chain you get an extra 2mm - 3mm between the chainring teeth where you can still fit and use your 3mm allen wrench to tighten the slider.
I'm 6 foot tall, and I own a 490mm reach, mullet enduro bike, a 27.5 hardtail with 470mm reach. My most ridden bike is my 433mm reach, 2012 Canyon Torque FRX. I like to call it,"Boostmaster syndrome". Maybe it's 26" wheels, or maybe the whole bike being smaller is just more fun
Oh man i feel you. I'm 1,85m (6'1" i think) and prefer a Reach between 460 - 475mm. My first proper MTB 15 years ago was a Specialized Big Hit from 2006 in Size M so i'm also used to those smaller bikes. At the moment everyone seems to recommend larger and larger frames (at least here in Germany), but after testing Bikes with a Reach over 475mm i know for sure that i don't want more than that. It almost seems like people are proud of riding bigger Bikes and need to tell everyone who rides a frame that is too small in their eyes xD Oh an biiig respect for the technical climbs! :D

Du sprichst mir aus der Seele! Fahre seit je her kleinere Bikes.
Love the bike! I recently purchased a ‘22 Patrol medium. After riding size larges. Mostly because that’s what the shops said I should be riding and myself not really knowing. But the medium feels amazing, instantly felt the difference. Love the videos, keep up the good work!
Lol the Zeb with the Fox logos! The best bike size is the one that feels best! being 5'5'' I get stuck between small and medium sizes (Smedium for me!) Small is a ton of fun for jumps, medium feels good for tech, and Smedium sizes like specialized's S2 is an excellent balance between them. Happy New Bike Day Boostmaster!
Nice video. I’ve always sized down. I’m 6’3” and have ridden L my whole life. Mostly cause I liked a more playful, lighter bike. I recently got an XL Vitus Sommet. The best decision I’ve ever made. Stability over super techy terrain is way more fun than playfulness (read sketchiness) imo.
@@The_Truth5 if you’re able ride both sizes. What kind of riding do you prefer? Nimble and playful or fast and stable. Also what kind of trails? Are they tight and twisty or long and technical.
It is so weird seeing you ride stuff like this as opposed to your regular content. This is the kind of stuff we ride all the time in Colorado and Utah and yeah, climbing that chunk is a whole different skill set. I think you should def. be on at least a medium for sure.
I like the playfulness of smaller bikes for sure, but the stability and control I feel riding bikes that are a little too big not only boosts my confidence on the trails but also allows me to experiment more with technical riding because my weight is more evenly dispersed over the whole bike. I crashed far too much on bikes that were too small for me! I’m not saying I’m riding bikes a whole size up, but I’ve always looked small over my more recent bikes. Smaller bikes are probably more fun, but are a lot scarier to ride I think. Just depends whether the fun is more worth it than control for you I suppose!
I’m 6’1” and ride a size large Giant Trance X and it really feels more like a medium, but I like the way it feels , it is weird how companies all have sized frames but there are all completely different from company to company
For a 5"10 rider you're likely right between a medium and a large bike from most brands. I think it's been smart for you to "size down" on modern trail and enduro bikes as you clearly enjoy a more playful and lively experience. Although, getting a small Transition Patrol was probably overkill. My 2020 Kona Honzo in a size Medium has a longer reach at 450mm. If I was you, I'd seriously consider a size Large when you're looking for a new downill bike. As for this category of bike you should likely slightly prioritise stability and speed over a playful and lively experience. Thank god for brands like Trek which offer an extra M/L size for us 5"8 to 5"10 guys. From my quick research, roughly 46% of men are between 5"8 and 5"10. It's ludicrous that most brands don't offer a M/L size for us. That's 50% of the male bike market!
I am like 5"9 and had to buy my last two bikes in L and even XL because I couldn't get hold of anything in size M. But the size numbers are often misleading.. my XL bike feels a lot smaller than my L bike..
Here Here! At 5'10" I am always between sizes. I felt like Large fit me pretty good for a while, but with the large sizes getting bigger, many now feel too big, while medium is too small. Crazy they can't just make a brand for nearly 50% of men in the US.
i'm 5"10, and understood through testing that 455-465 reach is the perfect one for me I also prefer having a 50mm stem to keep more front weight control currently riding a Remedy L with cascade and mulleted 160mm fork :) with a coil I get around 63.6 HTA with this setup and 1210 wheelbase It's insanely good on pumptrack/flowy trails
At 5'10" myself. I find a 465mm reach to be pretty perfect. I did recently get a transition patrol with a 480mm reach, and have been surprised with how comfortable I am on it. Anything below 460 feels kinda short to me. At the same time, I do prefer a shorter stem. 35-40mm.
Love seeing you riding different terrains of trails. Traveling and racing is not cheap. Thank you for making this trip happen and sharing that experience with us. Bike fit seems to be more about trail and ride style choices. But changing your bike size definitely helps you vary your skills, and can even help work on different muscle groups. So, keep exploring all types and grow your collection for whatever terrain or ride styles you want to tackle. Maybe even see you on a road cycle one day. Improve your long climb endurance skills.
I used to always ride a Large at 5’11” but with short legs! Now they’ve gotten so long I’ve fought all the size L’s I’ve bought. Went to a Medium 5010 and loved it! Yes if you’re high speed downhilling I might want longer but all around the 450mm Reach is perfect. Then bought Levo in 450mm Reach as well and also perfect.
I went from a 21.5" frame with a 415mm reach (not stock, shorter stem and longer fork) to a 500mm reach on an XL frame and I couldn't be happier! I'm 6'4 and I don't throw my bike around like you do so stability is my friend. Jumps feel a lot more stable now.
ey dude I´m from Spain I was watching your videos since... I don´t remeber xd, your videos are freaking best quality, voices, feelings, different places, friends... you´re the best mtb youtuber for me bro
I feel you on this completely. I got myself the smaller size 2 from GG and most recommend size 3 for my height. But I am more of a flow jump trail guy and I borrowed bikes many times in past and hate feeling like on a big bike having to do so much work to maneuver it. I am 5'10 as well and I know now a lot of bike companies say a large is the size for us but most mediums seem like better more comfortable reach
I got a size 2 GG Smash with the same reasoning. Never wound up getting along with the geo. That GG replaced a size Large pivot mach 6, which i loved at 465mm reach. Replaced the GG with a large Revel rascal 4 months later, and then added a large transition patrol recently. Loving both those bikes. At 5'10" I found the size 2GG was just a bit too short. Had to run a 50mm stem and still felt cramped, which i don't think played well with the slack HTA. Mix that with the longish chainstays, and I just never felt balanced on the bike. I think 465-470 is the perfect reach for me on a trail bike, and I have been really liking the 480mm reach for more techy DH stuff. Probably won't be sizing down again in the future.
@@michaelwrigley5438 yeah if you were coming from a reach of 465 I would have never went with the size 2 GG. I feel great on my size 2 GG mixed megatrail I use a 40mm stem and think they are 30mm rise bars. It could also be cause when I got my first bike the trek remedy 8 I went with the smaller 18.5 over the 19.5 most recommended and the size 2 GG was most similar to the reach and all that for sizing. I have demod size larges and ridden buddies bigger bikes. I can ride them fine. They definitely are stable in chunk but I feel like the bike is harder to manuever and it almost rides me almost like once pick line harder to get out of it sort of thing. I feel its easier to get into those oh **** moments on bigger bikes and harder to get out of them compared to smaller bike. Also I am a more flow and jump guy but in the tech I want to be able to have quicker agility in technical stuff for different lines. Instead of just on a bigger bike hold a line and plow through it. Obviously if I was a racer I would go for bigger bike.
You're between recommended sizing on most bikes. At 6' my height is more so in the legs so large meant riser bars, moving seat forward, and short stem not enough. Standing was ok but long seat time is hard on wrists and back. I'm now loving a medium specialized fuse with 10mm longer stem.
Great choice mate! had a 2019 M patrol and ran it until last year and loved it. I went with a S offering v2 instead of the M i was recommended and it is so fun! cheers!
How tall are you? I'm 5'7 which is the max or just outside of most smalls, but I still love my 26" youth bike more than anything I've tried. I just haven't been able to find any to try here for sizing on east coast
I also tend to size down. I'm 5' 10" and I always ride mediums. A lot of bike companies recommend a size large but I like how much more control I get over a smaller bike. Maybe one day I'll try a size large with some raised handle bars or something like that.
Wow hope you enjoyed. your trip to Jordan I watched Nick’s video from seven days ago and he said you was out here I didn’t. expect to see you out here right out your comfort zone but you sent it big respect and doing a line that Dave didn’t do that’s. impressive as many people know Trying to follow Dave’s lines is pretty sketchy at the best of times but the gap was gnarly and sketchy
Thank you for taking me on a vacarious ride with you! 71yrs and massive rotator cuff tear😮, but can hardly wait to get back on in July! 😊 I will be riding alot to get back in shape, but never any technical like this trip of yours. BTW - I am 5'9" 200lbs & have 2 mediums, Oregon/Commencal & Thailand/Canyon Neuron CF (crashed December on a single track 😅). The main bummer is how that crash keeps me from other stuff like scuba diving😢. So how do you handle injuries?
Love the vids Jordan I have a ‘20 grey patrol just like that sized down to a large (6’3”) and it’s definitely a fun park ripper you don’t feel its nearly 40 pound weight at all. I always size down my playful bikes as well but keep the xc and gravel rigs in XL for cockpit comfort
It's crazy to me how much each person's set up is different. Like the fact you have a medium frame with a 210mm dropper, must have pretty long legs for your frame. I'm only 5'9 but have always liked the feel of a large frame, but my upper and lower body are pretty even so I use a smaller dropper post, my dropper currently is 170mm and it feels too long maxed out haha. Makes me wonder if I'd be better off on a medium frame myself.
Im 5"10 and I ride a size small 2022 enduro frame with 430mm reach on it, If you compare the frame geometry wise it's almost the same as a ~2018 medium. Really just shows how bikes are just upsized now. I built this bike a bit different by making it a 27.5/26 mullet slopeduro. Some say its like a dirtjumper on steroids, buit I love how playfull this thing is.
I’m 5’9.5” and about 460 is my sweet spot I like. Road a 475 reach with 800mm bars and felt like I was on a monster truck. 435 on the other hand feels like I gotta get too far over the back on steeps. Wife’s 445 feels fun and jumpy but just a bit short climbing. Hit my knees on the bars but doable and fun on flowy blue trails.
exact same height and my reach on an L is 472 with a 35mm stem and 35mm rise bars. i like it a lot and fell much more confident compared to my old M with 435 reach. 460ish might be good too in the end, but 472 is working for me nonetheless. also, age and flexibility and how they impact riding style i think add to the equation.
This is a very real issue with me (5’11”). I had only one bike (Norco Fluid - large) for all my riding, but I felt that it wouldn’t be healthy long-term to send it for everything (including Harper and Sun Peaks) as my riding got better. For I picked up a used DH bike for all things down. A 2007 Giant Glory - medium sized. The sized and geometry difference are very noticeable. Always takes a run to get used to the Glory. It probably is a bit small for me, but it does feel nice to be able to wiggle it around on the janky downhill stuff.
Interesting how bike length is such a personal thing. I still have some older shorter bikes but the 2022 large patrol I have I really find fits me well even though I am only 5’ 10”. Older bikes are 2012 951 med, 2014 m9 med, and 2017 kona blast medium. The patrol replaced a 2016 giant trance med. I do want a replacement for the blast that’s large / 64ish headtube.
Just picked up a Large transition patrol myself. Also 5'10". I usually go with Large bikes, which was typically 465ish the last few years. At 480mm reach the patrol is the longest bike I have ridden, but I felt at home on it pretty quickly.
You should do a video on wtf happened to evolve. There are people who put money down on their BC built bike that are sitting empty handed. Matt isn't answering emails and they've erased their online presence. You've got enough connections to do some investigative journalism. Also, could do a PG trip to see if you can find Aron and ride some sweet trails. Pidherny is legit. The old DH lines on Cranbrook hill were cool last time I checked them out. PG has a cool mtb scene.
oh wow I didn't even realize they stopped all production!! Shoot that's weird, I don't actually know what happened there. But I understand they use the same frames from some chinese company and then put their branding on it, but I think other brands do that too maybe? I don't know what happened :( I haven't been in contact with any of them in years.
That was like us when started out at 5.9 was told by Giant we would need a 21in boulder my mate got it but was way way to big just like you on your pic! I went for the 19in was perfect and my other mate went for the 17in that looked cool being the slopped style hard tail but if you wanted a slope top bar you HAD to go smaller! They just didn't make sloped tubes on anything bigger than a 17in basically back then and when we stsrted getting good at trials Saracen came out with the 14in X-ile frame was amazing we all got one and stripped it for all new upgrades that frame just had everything thrown at it! Just nice to see modern bikes with the sloped top tube nowadays so you can get a bike that not only looks awsome but fit's lol
i can ride 420-450 reach, but the seat tube angle DEFINITELY has to be understood as a factor in frame sizing. for example my Hugene is 426 and the Megatrail is 453... but the STA on the bikes only account for a true difference between center of saddle and center of bars to be 10mm.. so forget the reach being measured from the BB, i only care about the distance between my hips and hands..
Remember when I said whistler will be the only way to test it out? I’m so wrong. Fitsimons is closed and the only lifts that are open Dre the gondola and creek side. Not going to bother heading up this year
I am 190 cm, reach 465 gt force in size L, I want a bigger size, many people notice from the side that the bike is small for me. I don’t know, maybe it’s all marketing tricks, they inspire us that we need a more stable bike. Great video, thx!
I'm still new to the sport, but I feel like sizing down helps me gain a lot more control and temper my speeds. I sent a regular trail on a buddy's '22 Norco Sight and the geometry felt slick, but 29" tires provide far too much speed for someone who is still working on basic stuff like bunny hopping and manuals.
bigger will usually mean faster and more stable. smaller just makes it a bit more agile or easy to manipulate on dirt and in the air. my experience though is bigger is better. you just get stronger and faster and generally adapt to the bigger size in the air.
I am 6' 0" (183cm) and I am riding 465mm reach ns snabb 27.5" with defy35 stem & fatbar 35rise, personally I would go even further ~480mm or try longer stem like 45-50mm at actual reach. With short stem bike is very flicky
Great video. I’m the same height but definitely not the same skill 😂, and I find Medium bikes fit me perfectly sitting, pero are a little short standing up.
It looks like you have original version of the OneUp chainguide. I have the same one and if my chainring is worn or the guide isn't PERFECT, yeah the chain can squeeze out and off the ring. Super annoying when it happens, as you have to undo the bolt to open the guide. I'm guessing the v2 version of their chainguide is a lot less flexy.
Before I’m using Hardtail size M 29er, recently I just saw from marketplace Full sus MTB 27.5 size S it was expansive if buy new but the seller sell it very cheap so I decide to buy anyway because it’s hard to find someone selling very cheap. He selling cheap maybe because the frame size S and most of people probably finding size M. But I already ride the bike for 6 month now not really much different only need to replace stem a little long and change front fork to 29er make it Mullet. Maybe not a problem because I bought cheap so it’s fun to ride small bike. Im 5’9 taller suppose to be riding size L by the way but I wonder M probably the best. And one more think I think size S maybe consider okay to ride but don’t you dare try size XS that’s realistically dumb!
Size is so weird. I'm 6'1" and started on a size Large Specialized Enduro but sold it after a year because i didn't feel confident on it. So i bought a Size M Nukeproof Scout and it's perfect. I also bought a Size M Transition Smuggler wich also feels great though i have to say the Size S Specialized Enduro from my wife feels better on tech stuff. I dont like her bike on steep descents at all because i always have the feeling i am about to go over the handlebars. Then again my handlebars and stem combined only have 20 mm of raise so it seems i just like my bars low. i wonder if i would feel better on a smaller bike with higher bars 🤔
I was like : wow! Those carbon rims are strong. Jordan hittin' them like he want it to brake... untill he did 😂 Love mine wtb i31c rims for a stiffnes they provide but I always shit my pants after a case haha
I think people put too much stock into geometry. Just like shock air pressure your size and weight shouldn't dictate the settings, your riding Go for what feels goodstyle should. I have an '09 norco ryde set up fully rigid and single speed for the skate parks and trails. It feels like a 26" bmx. Then I have a large '16 GT fury with 456 reach though that may have changed as I run it with a 29" front end. Then I have a 2021 Kona Honzo ESD in XL with a reach of 525mm. All 3 bikes feel perfect. If I want stable and fast I take the bigger bikes out. If I want twitchy and agile I take the Ryde out. You can do downhill on a unicycle if you have the skill. Go for what feels good. It also comes down to your ratios. I have a small torso an long arms & legs like a gibbon. ome have long arms and short legs, others are the opposit and some are jus short. Comparing apples to apples is hard. Your overall height is not the best gauge. I'd love an evil imperial with triple clamp forks if there's one in australia.
Hahaha, previous owner had a bit of fun with the fork decals I see

ey dude I´m from Spain I was watching your videos since...
I was glued to this video! So entertaining!
I think you made the right choice. We are just about the same hight and I think mediums fit the best these days.
great story, great images, great video. I stayed all the way to the dd wave at the end. Thank you!!
Your body positioning looks way better on the new bike and you look like your more comfortable on it.
Those Fox 69 stickers💀😅
Where can i get them? Asking for a friend 🧐💀
@@nachoizuel779 Custom made by my friend :)
I also tend to size down. I'm 5' 10" and I always ride mediums. A lot of bike companies recommend a size large but I like how much more control I get over a smaller bike. Maybe one day I'll try a size large with some raised handle bars or something like that.
Jordan KOMaster coming soon with that type of climbing skills! haha
Wow hope you enjoyed. your trip to Jordan I watched Nick’s video from seven days ago and he said you was out here I didn’t. expect to see you out here right out your comfort zone but you sent it big respect and doing a line that Dave didn’t do that’s. impressive as many people know Trying to follow Dave’s lines is pretty sketchy at the best of times but the gap was gnarly and sketchy
thanks, I enjoyed those trails, I always thought it looked like a fun place to ride
5:35 idk what your talkin about ? The decals look great 🤣
Siiiiiiick new bike!!!! Also thanks for giving bikefitting a bit more attention!!
Thank you for taking me on a vacarious ride with you! 71yrs and massive rotator cuff tear😮, but can hardly wait to get back on in July! 😊
I will be riding alot to get back in shape, but never any technical like this trip of yours.
Can't wait till you try a 480mm reach Patrol next year!
Cool bike and nice to see you hooked up with @DD and @VanCan in AZ. I'm 5' 10" and always go with med frames.
Lol, agree and i noticed and I saw you riding in Whistler, your bikes are like BMX for your size.
I feel like you’d love the 21/22 patrol. I do!
the only problem is that it has a 29" front wheel
@@JordanBoostmaster Yes I can see that. It’s good when it’s rough and rocky I find.
When I met you in Sedona I was surprised your bike was smaller. But when we were riding you were shredding that bike. 🤘🤘🤘
Check your derailleur clutch‘a preload if you’re dropping chains. My shimano Deore clutch was bad. Replacing it made a huge difference!
Great video, can't wait to see a video on your whole trip to Arizona.
460ish might be good too in the end, but 472 is working for me nonetheless. also, age and flexibility and how they impact riding style i think add to the equation.
so sick cant weight for more vids with the new bike
The fork decals are sick !!!! Hahahaha
Yes grate bike and I’m glad to see to you came to AZ to check out all of our great spots
Amazing video as always
I just realized, Ive been watching your channel since you had the white Kona! Omg that was a long time ago 🤘🤙
I don't know what happened :(
I haven't been in contact with any of them in years.
Great video bro!
Dude that bike looks so sick! Only way to properly test it is at whistler 👀
Sickest, love Arizona riding, so cool
i can ride 420-450 reach, but the seat tube angle DEFINITELY has to be understood as a factor in frame sizing.
for example my Hugene is 426 and the Megatrail is 453... but the STA on the bikes only account for a true difference between center of saddle and center of bars to be 10mm.. so forget the reach being measured from the BB, i only care about the distance between my hips and hands..
That bike is sick!!!
Nice bike! Size too!!
those eras of norcos were highly underrated, just wish they weighed less
Fox stickers on a Zeb! Semi Sendy couldn’t send that climb! Sick new bike😎
leave the stickers on the fork please those are great🤣🤣
5:37 they look pretty good
Remember when I said whistler will be the only way to test it out? I’m so wrong. Fitsimons is closed and the only lifts that are open Dre the gondola and creek side. Not going to bother heading up this year
I'm a touch below 6 feet. Had a 485 reach bike. It was not good. Settled at 470, but I'd much rather ride a 450 than a 485 again.
It looks good on you❤
the fox 69 ZEB 😂😂
The Wilson is the #1 bike that I will always associate with this channel
I am 190 cm, reach 465 gt force in size L, I want a bigger size, many people notice from the side that the bike is small for me. I don’t know, maybe it’s all marketing tricks, they inspire us that we need a more stable bike. Great video, thx!
I'm still new to the sport, but I feel like sizing down helps me gain a lot more control and temper my speeds. I sent a regular trail on a buddy's '22 Norco Sight and the geometry felt slick, but 29" tires provide far too much speed for someone who is still working on basic stuff like bunny hopping and manuals.
I'm 6ft4 about 220lbs. I bought a 26 inch Huffy mountain bike.
bigger will usually mean faster and more stable. smaller just makes it a bit more agile or easy to manipulate on dirt and in the air. my experience though is bigger is better. you just get stronger and faster and generally adapt to the bigger size in the air.
You really do listen to comments!!!! Nice.
Nah, I gotta keep the fox 69 on the front!
I am 6' 0" (183cm) and I am riding 465mm reach ns snabb 27.5" with defy35 stem & fatbar 35rise, personally I would go even further ~480mm or try longer stem like 45-50mm at actual reach. With short stem bike is very flicky
fox 69 is pretty legendary ngl i would keep it
Gorgeous desert trails
Great video. I’m the same height but definitely not the same skill 😂, and I find Medium bikes fit me perfectly sitting, pero are a little short standing up.
Ha I always wondered if your bikes were too small. I understand your reasoning now though. I’m about 5,11 and always aim for a 460ish mm reach
nice video!!!
0:42 OMG, you're so cute on that picture!
I have a transition sentinel with the same shock and I weigh 120 lbs and I had 150 psi in that shock
After your runs in Utah, it looks like you're ready for a spot at Red Bull Rampage haha
That's heaps good! I've done the opposite and got a Medium in a brand that I really should have gotten a small D:
With the longer reach, the key question is ... can you do X-ups on the new bike?
good question!
Your truax was my favourite bike you ever had
It makes me wish I had one
Size is so weird. I'm 6'1" and started on a size Large Specialized Enduro but sold it after a year because i didn't feel confident on it. So i bought a Size M Nukeproof Scout and it's perfect. I also bought a Size M Transition Smuggler wich also feels great though i have to say the Size S Specialized Enduro from my wife feels better on tech stuff.
I dont like her bike on steep descents at all because i always have the feeling i am about to go over the handlebars. Then again my handlebars and stem combined only have 20 mm of raise so it seems i just like my bars low.
i wonder if i would feel better on a smaller bike with higher bars
🤔
I run one up chain guide bashgaurd never had chain come off my xt drive train check derailleur clutch may be super loose
Work out your RAD and screw manufacturers number's best advice ever! Pick uo Dialed great book for tuning
How is the Fox RPC for more 'enduro' riding? Not to heavy or warm?
it was warm and heavy haha
@@JordanBoostmaster So not recommended? xD
Try a 30 deg handle bar it would be perfect
I was like : wow! Those carbon rims are strong. Jordan hittin' them like he want it to brake... untill he did 😂
Love mine wtb i31c rims for a stiffnes they provide but I always shit my pants after a case haha
