I’m sure Dake’s tendencies to throw from the seatbelt position we’re thoroughly scouted and game-planned. This counter was the proverbial ace up the sleeve. Well executed technique by the Belarusian; even better coaching!

@@ralphiewigs2208 At this level of competition, every potential scoring opportunity is exploited. My impression is that Dake just walked into “it”, not remotely aware that he’d been game planned from that position. It’s interesting how lopsided a match can look just because of a good counter shaking up a mindset. Not that Dake, at this level was lost or baffled and giving up- I’m sure he knew what was happening even though it was a beat too late. It’s just that any human can suddenly leave what’s usually honed to second-nature to needing some thought after that first takedown. And on second viewing, I actually agree that Dake’s back was not past 90 degrees… but at first viewing I agreed with the ref.
Anyway, it looks like Dake was not staying low and close enough to his right when he first got that body lock, allowing his left leg scooped. Being that the amount of time people from that region spend wrestling since soon after birth LOL, the counters are always there without panic. Most people feel Dake’s hug and just hope to not land on their head, and… Dake usually meters the approach slightly more.
After that toss, Dake has yet again an uncharacteristic form with leaving his left leg close for that cradle to happen. For a shot he can do that and it works, but it’s that he left it there so long that makes me see Dake is not moving 100% clear minded as usual.
As impressive as the Belorussian (Dagestani) wrestler is…. he, Dake, and a few more could have different results any day. I’ve seen and been in matches that (though miles beneath their skill) went the same way, just because my opponent had familiar habits and technique that just happened to work in a drastic way in his favor- my being scouted or not- and then the next time we wrestled it was a one point match for me winning, them winning the next by three, me winning a year later by eight. Lots of factors are affecting, not just “he’s better”.

The Russians saw how Dake throws with his hips too high, very risky but high reward if he pulls it off. The Russians are students of the sport and will quickly learn to counter this type of risky offense. Dake only recently became a "big throw" guy, he was always a master of defense and very difficult to score points against. He had always made sure that his head and hips were at or lower than his opponents. But then he became the "big throw" guy. This is dangerous in a freestyle match. There was a replay angle they showed live where you could see Dake circle his left leg closer to the guys body than he normally probably would so he doesn’t step out, which allows for the guy to secure his leg in the initial takedown.
This to me is where freestyle is less interesting and technical than folk style. There is not much room in freestyle for scrambles, and you have to be so worried about stepping one foot out and giving up a point instead of action continuing on the edge. In folk-style that’s just a good shot attempt and good defense, 0-0, but in freestyle it feels you are punished for being the aggressor if you can’t immediately finish a clean takedown (see Snyder’s gold medal match). But none of that takes away from the other guy just wrestled an awesome match.

Freestyle punishes you for being sloppy. If you get out of position on a shot and don't finish cleanly, you will get countered to your back. Great breakdown! My jaw was also on the floor watching this, and I'm glad to see where exactly it went wrong for Dake.
Two issues I see that went against Dake in that first sequence were: 1) being so close to the edge he was worried about the step-out and it doesn't seem like he could balance effectively, and 2) when Kadi stepped on his foot he couldn't get it out there to help break the fall. I feel like if Dake could have moved his foot a split-second sooner that would have helped.

Great slow motion breakdown. Great teaching points. Wonderful technique from Kadi, managing to create imbalance and use Dake's attack against him. Dake beats straight-on attacks and defenses routinely. This arm and leg control to set up the heavy hip may seem unorthodox to US fans. It was executed with punch, not steady pressure. I like the physics reference. Watch some cadet matches at the world level and you see this same style dominate (bully) our younger wrestlers too. Reminds me a bit of Randy Lewis: invite a shot, then counter, hip-in and toss. A great deal can be learned by US wrestling from this match. Thanks to both wrestlers and DPS breakdowns.

Dake never had a chance. He's a great wrestler - just not an OLYMPIC level wrestler. He spent a decade getting schooled by Burroughs. He even changed his 3 point stance to match Burroughs. He learned from Burroughs and Cox and studies film but nothing beats actually wrestling against the Russians. He hasn't ever had the chance to wrestle Olympic level wrestlers until this year. He was expected to place 6th and he brought home a bronze medal. That shows he's a tough wrestler that pushes as hard as he can push. He should be congratulated for medaling. He never got the experience and coaching he needed to excel at this level. These guys are no joke!
