The Russians saw how Dake throws with his hips too high, very risky but high reward if he pulls it off. The Russians are students of the sport and will quickly learn to counter this type of risky offense. Dake only recently became a "big throw" guy, he was always a master of defense and very difficult to score points against. He had always made sure that his head and hips were at or lower than his opponents. But then he became the "big throw" guy. This is dangerous in a freestyle match. Trying to execute Greco Roman style moves in a freestyle match is very risky and won't go well at the elite level.
as a great fan of the sport but I admit I'm not technically sharp I greatly appreciate your diagnosis. In my simple mind I was thinking, how did Dake NOT win the gold medal ? But the combo of watching the incredible excellence of this 'Kadi' coupled with your explanation made me realize > it is NOT a fluke that this superb wrestler beat Dake with incredible wrestling skill and lightening fast balance, manuevers and positioning perfection to take full advantage of Dake slightly less than perfect position and execution
I think so many people felt that Dake was a shoe in for the gold medal, but then again the 74kg class is probably the most competitive class at the top level.
I don't think anyone expected Dake to even win a medal. He just doesn't have enough experience at this level. @@utkarsh2746 I'm from Russia, and I know history and what is signature sign of different wrestling school, so that is what make wrestling so interesting, Better wrestler is guy who won no matter what he relying for
There was a replay angle they showed live where you could see Dake circle his left leg closer to the guys body than he normally probably would so he doesn’t step out, which allows for the guy to secure his leg in the initial takedown. This to me is where freestyle is less interesting and technical than folk style. There is not much room in freestyle for scrambles, and you have to be so worried about stepping one foot out and giving up a point instead of action continuing on the edge. In folk-style that’s just a good shot attempt and good defense, 0-0, but in freestyle it feels you are punished for being the aggressor if you can’t immediately finish a clean takedown (see Snyder’s gold medal match). But none of that takes away from the other guy just wrestled an awesome match.
@@dormilon36 maybe. I’m not a freestyle expert. But from the matches I saw it was very inconsistent from match to match when they stopped it or let action continue. But from the other angle, you can clearly tell Dake took an awkward step close to the guy. It appears he was worried about the out of bounds. But it could have just been a mistake or bad balance
@@roblovvorn8564 Later in the same match, in fact, action continues w Dake having stepped out. Now your point regarding inconsistency is entirely valid, especially as it related to passivity calls. THAT was frustrating throughout the tournament!
@@dormilon36 you’re probably right. I was just saying it looked like Dake got a little awkward trying to stay in. Sometime I noticed once the guy stepped out, even if action could continue the person would give up on the attack and just give them a shove to get the 1 point push out. Either way the other guy outwrestled Dake, was not trying to take anything away from him And don’t get me started on passivity haha. So arbitrary and can change the tone of the whole match
Freestyle punishes you for being sloppy. If you get out of position on a shot and don't finish cleanly, you will get countered to your back. Just like we saw here and in the Snyder/Sadulaev match. Good technique is paramount in freestyle and Kadimagomedov had some incredible technique in this match with Dake.
Great breakdown! My jaw was also on the floor watching this, and I'm glad to see where exactly it went wrong for Dake. Two issues I see that went against Dake in that first sequence were: 1) being so close to the edge he was worried about the step-out and it doesn't seem like he could balance effectively, and 2) when Kadi stepped on his foot he couldn't get it out there to help break the fall. I feel like if Dake could have moved his foot a split-second sooner that would have helped.
only a couple of years ago I mentioned that wrestlers can now study film because of the internet or Flowrestling and someone here actually crapped on my theory. its clear someone was watching film on Kyle. Kyle has repeated this move to the point of being predictable and Kadimagomedov took his seed. Film study is now well in place in the sport of wrestling at all levels. wrestlers should train for all comers, but the elites now have to train for other elites. its a whole new world.
I felt sorry for Dake already. Who wants to see Dake get educated by someone that much better than him? A match with Sidakov would have been a total beat down.

But the old saying has never been more true: sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you. Either way, Dake is a true champion and his career has been amazing to watch. What a match! What a sport!!
This was a shocker and Dake is a beast, but maybe Kadi spent some time deadlifting and olympic style lifting when he was younger and generated true explosive power. Power cleans, clean and jerk, snatch. etc.
Dude where did this Kadi guy come from was he on anyone’s radar? Does Belarus compete in the worlds? Cause this guy must be a total boss destroying Dake like this I’ve never seen anyone do this to Dake it’s some freaky shit
He is from Russia and won Russian Nationals in 2017 (actually beat Sidakov in the quarterfinals). He also won the 2020 Euros. I think everyone was anticipating Dake vs Sidakov in the finals so this result was quite a shock to many (including me).
Nah! The guy is actually from Russia. Any one of those guys would beat Dake - not taking anything away but Dake being help back by Burroughs for a decade kept him from getting the exposure he needs to wrestle at this level. He's just not ready. If Chamizo had been healthy he wouldn't have medaled at all.
That lat grip and subsequent throw by Kadi just shows his incredible strength. That position did not appear an ideal one for Kadi yet he still made that throw happen. Truly jaw dropping.
Great slow motion breakdown. Great teaching points. Wonderful technique from Kadi, managing to create imbalance and use Dake's attack against him. Dake beats straight-on attacks and defenses routinely. This arm and leg control to set up the heavy hip may seem unorthodox to US fans. It was executed with punch, not steady pressure. I like the physics reference. Watch some cadet matches at the world level and you see this same style dominate (bully) our younger wrestlers too. Reminds me a bit of Randy Lewis: invite a shot, then counter, hip-in and toss. A great deal can be learned by US wrestling from this match. Thanks to both wrestlers and DPS breakdowns.
When a guy gets a Metz in deep enough their is no stopping it. With a over hook and a Metz a guy will feel fifty pounds lighter. I don’t think Dake had the hands locked before he got his hips in position to hit the throw. Who knows though. I believe it would do our freestyle team to do a little work with the Greco guys.
It just seemed like he was so much stronger than Dake. Most of the scoring came from Kadi's overhook. He was just powering through to what ever he wanted off that overhook.
Stepping on his foot is not accidental, he scouted its location with his left and shuffled over knowing where to put his right foot for the “throw”. It’s actually a trip, totally legal technique.
Dake never had a chance. He's a great wrestler - just not an OLYMPIC level wrestler. He spent a decade getting schooled by Burroughs. He even changed his 3 point stance to match Burroughs. He learned from Burroughs and Cox and studies film but nothing beats actually wrestling against the Russians. He hasn't ever had the chance to wrestle Olympic level wrestlers until this year. He was expected to place 6th and he brought home a bronze medal. That shows he's a tough wrestler that pushes as hard as he can push. He should be congratulated for medaling. He never got the experience and coaching he needed to excel at this level. These guys are no joke!
Thank you for posting this. I’d been trying to find out wtf happened in this match. I’m assuming Dake had to gamble and wrestle super aggressive for the rest of the match, and this dude was able to exploit that for the tech?
Dake got LUCKY to be there. Burroughs broken foot was a way worse injury than he admitted. His 11 weeks not being able to train allowed Dake to get the opportunity he blew! Dake was awesome in college he just never leveled up. Probably being stuck behind Burroughs for 10 years has ruined his opportunity.
I think it should have been 4+2+2 =8 for Kadi and not 6. But Kadi did not challenge it. He knew he had it all under control. He had broken Kyle's confidence now.
Dake is simply to weak at 74kg to be competitive against Russian wrestlers, he is only competitive at 79kg where his muscle to body weight ratio is at an optimum. To bad 79kg is not an olympic weight class.
love the video but U missed the misdirection pressure Kadi put on Dake before switching angles using Dakes own momentum to pick up Dake, look at Kadis hips before he grabs the leg on the 1st takedown
This guy while growing up used to train with khabib and islam group. He went to wrestling and they went to sambo even though everyone train in wrestling in Russia. In a single photo there are many world Champion.
And every one of those great counters came from Dakes hesitation and stalling. He was in the right position, he just didn’t act fast enough. As a lifelong wrestler, you sit still, you’re beat. Those were some well planned counters for sure. Very unorthodox powerhouse wrestling.

Thought your answer was clear headed and appropriate. Looking forward to the upcoming World Championships. Dake will learn from this, the great ones do. Doesn't change the fact that Kadimagomedov and Sidakov are exception wrestlers.

Still hurts to watch. Great analysis though. When Kyle got in such a deep hole, he had to take even more risk. I had never heard of Kadi, but I have now. Dake is Dake...he never folded, and came back to win bronze.
Never folded?!?! He folded like a cheap lawn chair! The 2012 version of Burroughs will always be the best there ever was - far better than Dake could ever hope to be! Burroughs and Cox beating the guy up for a decade killed his technique.
@@qunicyspielberger8692 Persisting for 10 years when JB was better than him. Coming back in the Olympics to earn a Bronze by beating the World Champion. I respect that. You must be a great athlete to feel superior to world champ Kyle Dake.
@@billybud9557 I don't feel superior to Kyle Dake. he was one of the best in college and is still top 10 in the world! He's just not an Olympic gold wrestler. Third is still one hell of a feat. Those that drink the Dake Koolaid think he's better than he is. He peaked in 2013. Sorry - FACT!
That.. was an amazing Metzger. Tremendous scouting/coaching and incredible execution with Dake bearing down on the seatbelt.
That hurt to watch live
Dake got outwrestled like he has by Burroughs for a decade.
Kadi is damn good, Jesus. His feel for those positions is next level. This wasn’t a case of just getting caught that’s for sure.
Any good greco guy sees the problems a "sometimes thrower" like Dake encounters.

as a great fan of the sport but I admit I'm not technically sharp I greatly appreciate your diagnosis.
65kg
Americans can’t touch any of them it’s why we weren’t there
Lol, this is the worlds. Not your little high school. Every weight class is fuqking stacked.
I don't think anyone expected Dake to even win a medal. He just doesn't have enough experience at this level. Spending a decade behind Burroughs has cost him the exposure he needed to win at this level. He's just out of time. In 2024 it will be an old Burroughs or a young athlete that brings home the medals!

Incredible video and incredible technique, even though it broke my heart a little. Look forward to more!
But this sequence would have been permitted to continue if Dake had, in fact, stepped out of bounds.
Either way the other guy outwrestled Dake, was not trying to take anything away from him
And don’t get me started on passivity haha.
I just think Dagestanis are good at upper body techniques and he just reacted to Dake.
Never saw Dake manhandled like that. Shocking.
Would have loved to see Afternoon Dake vs Sidakov at the Olympics

It appeared as if Metzger was ready for this move from Drake and had practiced the counter.
Wrestling is an amazing and grueling sport. These guys are talented and tough as nails.
Thanks for the analysis David. I think the step on foot at 3:34 was intentional because Kadzi did it twice with both feet. It prevents Dake's free foot from hopping. Very cool technique.
I was wondering if you can do some analysis on Zaur Uguev? I thought that guy had some of the best techniques throughout all the competitions.

Definitely agree with you. Superior technique was the impetus to the Belarusian's victory. But that being said, he's powerful as well to manhandle Dake like that (twice) even with good technique. What a fantastic video to watch, one of the best ever!

Thanks to both wrestlers and DPS breakdowns.
kadimagomedov stepping on dakes foot during that sequence is insane...he even used his other foot to gauge exactly where his foot would be.

Just goes to show you. Know matter how good you think someone is, or you are yourself, there's always someone better. Even just for one day.
Dake is world class at attacking the body I think the first sequence came more from a great gameplan to take out Dake.
why was a legible video of this huge and historic olympic match and moment not made available and immediately?
That is a damn good technique there out of a dangerous spot
It just seemed like he was so much stronger than Dake. Most of the scoring came from Kadi's overhook. He was just powering through to what ever he wanted off that overhook.
It is his -signature move
Brilliant change of direction from that overhook position
Amazing. Thanks for the content and keep up the great work
Stepping on his foot is not accidental, he scouted its location with his left and shuffled over knowing where to put his right foot for the “throw”. It’s actually a trip, totally legal technique.
Insane technical battle in a few short seconds

Even more jaw dropping was gable Steveson

Thank you for posting this. I’d been trying to find out wtf happened in this match. I’m assuming Dake had to gamble and wrestle super aggressive for the rest of the match, and this dude was able to exploit that for the tech?
I got so mad and upset that after he lost turned off my tv and went to sleep not wanting to watch the rest of the matches
Dake got LUCKY to be there. Burroughs broken foot was a way worse injury than he admitted. His 11 weeks not being able to train allowed Dake to get the opportunity he blew!
