Excellent content. No one expected Dake to get smoked by this guy, but he obviously did his homework and capitalized on Kyle's tactics. It was a stunning match, and thanks for breaking it down.

based on what you show...the one where Kadi scores, he seems like he is pulling Dake clockwise until he gets that left leg extended and not planted and strikes right at that time for the move to use it as easier leverage to disrupt his base and ultimately score. Slick move when broken down to the degree you analyze these clips! Like others have said and I will restate it...I applaud your detail to the small things!
Wow, brilliant and thorough analysis of what initially looked like a scramble during the match. There are so many subtleties to this short but decisive sequence. It makes one appreciate even more the level of skill, preparation, and power of these guys.
I was only a high school wrestler but loved the sport and have followed it ever since. I am now at the age of 55 and enjoy watching clips of wrestlers, especially highlighted matches like men's senior freestyle and the national tournament in college. Over the years I found myself analyzing the matches as to how a guy would get position on another guy, especially when the other guy was not supposed to win. I just found your 1st video about a week after the Olympics when you were analyzing Kyle Dakes match against the Russian, and now this one.. Wow! You do a great job of analyzing these matches. I can watch these videos with a basic level of understanding but you have a great way of explaining what is actually going on, thank you! One match I keep going back to was the match between Les Gutches and Cael Sanderson and I believe it was for the US Open Championship or something like that... If you're familiar with the match, Les had a 4 point or 5 point throw on Sanderson with a move I've never seen before. From my perspective it looks like Les set up Cael throughout the match because Cael would always go for the ankle pick. If you have a chance I would love for you to analyze that one! This deserves my subscription, keep-um-coming! 😊
Chris - appreciate the comment! And thanks for the Cael / Les recommendation. I just posted a quick breakdown of it on Twitter - twitter.com/DPSBreakdowns/status/1427068373804929031
Very nice, man! I really like the specifics you added regarding the position of the spine and Dake’s reaction(s) to being mindful of the out of bounds.
Sir, very nice breakdown! I have watched many of your breakdown videos and they are always well done. There is one thing I noticed that hasn't been mentioned, and I think this was crucial in Kadi being able to expose Dake for the four point move. As Kadi was attempting the throw he momentarily stepped on Dake's right foot with his right foot (at 10:27). This prevented Dake from immediately stepping back and potentially not exposing. Given that Kadi's head was buried up against Kyle's face at that moment, I believe it was just good luck on Kadi's part, although if he could have seen Dake's foot at that moment in time I am sure he would have tried to step on it.
It’s a tuff lost for Dake. I’m pretty sure he will have a hard time sleeping at night thinking about this match. He will be back more prepared for this next time. These Russians can wrestle no shame for getting Tech by them
Exactly - No shame! These guys are no joke. He didn't get tec'd by a rookie. This guy is at a whole different level than the guys Dake typically wrestles.
@Belal GZ you didn’t answer my questions buddy! Stop avoiding my questions and answer them like a man! How many times Have JB beaten Dake? And does JB have. Gold medal? And has JB ever got mauled and thrown all over the mat in the olympics like What just happened to Dake?? Answer Me!
@Belal GZ thank you 🙏🏿! That’s all I wanted to know! I really thought Dake was going to win it all! And was so shocked he was beat so badly! But it’s important to understand that JB is the greatest Wrestler 🤼♂️ of all time! Dake beats JB in the trials finally and Dake fans lose touch with reality! Don’t forget how dominate JB has been for the Last Decade!
This attack reminds me of the video you made about emami‘s underhook sequences. One of his main attacks was scooping the far leg when the near leg wasn‘t there. Aren‘t these similr mechanics, besides the underhook/overhook differences?
Can’t keep going to the same well over and over and not expecting it to go dry. Bad preparation and coaching on Dakes part. And Kudos to Kadhi, he learned and adapted to the same technique that was used on him.
There's one key detail I THINK you missed (not positive because of the camera angle): Dake's grip. In 2018 his 'seat belt,' arm was palm out; at the Olympics I think his seat belt grip was palm in. Again, it's hard to tell from the camera angle, but that palm out will definitely make him more structurally sound. It really makes a difference. Think how in a greco reverse lift the arm going over the back is always palm out. Edit: please let us know if you think that's relevant or if you have another camera angle. Also, I love your content!
Great side-by-side analysis. Remember watching this live and just being slack jawed in shock as Dake got scored on again and again and I didn't understand why.
We all loved Dake in 2013. Watching him struggle against guys like Burroughs and Cox for a decade has been heartbreaking. In 2013 I was sure Dake would be an Olympic gold medalist one day. It just never happened.
hey buddy great breakdown. QuickProQuote don't go for Metzger from halfover position. because its not a bent over lift, it's to lift the opponants knee being Metz'd above his own hip
I think you are right about the edge of the mat and Dake's effort to not step out, making his left leg vulnerable to be caught through unweighting. Nice use of the Gadzi match video to showcase the differences in body positioning between the two similar positions. Subtle differences but noticeably different results. I look forward to the world championships though. I really have faith in Dake. Both Kadi and Sidakov are outstanding wrestlers so I am under no illusions that Dake is guaranteed anything,, as it should be. Another challenge for Kyle.
I just posted a comment several hours ago on your original video covering the match where I mentioned that 2018 Worlds match against Gadzhimagomedov, that came to my mind as well when I saw this. I think that situation proves that Kadimagomedov didn't prepare specially for Dake, he was just smarter and more succesfull at executing the technique, which is a staple in freestyle at this position. Also, one thing I think you're missing or not emphasizing enough, is the foot placement. Against Gadzhimagomedov, Dake was able to step behind him with his near foot and hence lift him for the throw, while against Kadimagomedov he at best was parallel (thigh to thigh) with him, which was probably due to Kadimagomedov rotating his hips and pushing in, as you highlighted in the video. If his legs are parallel he can't lift and throw, at the most he can try a sloppy and risky maneuver. Interestingly enough, Sidakov excells in this position and counters in a characteristic way: in a seatbelt position with double underhooks, in which he sometimes ends up after a semifailed collar slide-by or underhook throw-by, he puts his near foot in front of the opponent, in between their legs, and then rotates away in a motion similar to a sag headlock. This creates tremendous pressure and possibly pain on the shoulder of the overhooking arm and threatens to potentially fold the opponent on their back, all the while Sidakov keeps his locked hands somewhat closer to the armpits than the hips but generally around the ribcage. Both of those things force the opponent to release the overhook and post with the same arm while dropping down to their knees and then Sidakov just slides his leg out from in between and moves to the back. You can see this scenario at display, among other matches, in his semifinal bout against Chamizo at the very same 2018 World Championships.
Does it matter that re: the two leg lifts... One time Dake's leg is hooked on the inside. The second time it is grabbed on the outside. I think it does matter. I believe more power is generated by trying to lift the leg on the outside.
What I find the most interesting is how someone can remember what happened at a march 3 years ago and be like "oh man the counter that they did to dake happened in 2018 but failed"
Unlike the position of Gadzi, Kadzi wins the hip and mat positioning through the whole sequence. It's not timing, so much as it's all hip positioning. Hips win sequences 9/10.
If you guys watched the European championships this year, you would see that Kadi dominated everyone...plus he was a Russian champion when he wrestled for Russia...don’t know how ya didn’t see how difficult Kyle dakes side of the bracket was...dude had a gauntlet ahead of him. Already knew kadi was going to be a tough match
Great analysis-thanks From the very beginning Kadi's over hook had Dake's arm MUCH HIGHER on Kadi's upper body than Gadi's over hook--meaning continuing to attempt a body lock-so high on Kadi's body-would be difficult and dangerous Not sure how Kadi jerked Dake's arm sooo high too fast-but that positioning killed Dake's attempt to body lock "low" on Kadi's torso-suck hips in etc- Perhaps Dake should have given up on the body lock sooner-and put his right arm up forward- to counter the over hook. Then perhaps he could have locked hands(he is very powerful) and pivoted around trying to get Kadi spinning around perhaps turning the over hook counter into a throw of sorts=with trip attempts thrown in(with any luck Take so powerful maybe he could dislocate Gadi's shoulder) Oh well both world Champions so what they hell do I know. Dake slightly over committed-should have bailed off the body lock sooner- then trying to quickly get the points back-over committed again Happens even to world champions
The overhook lets Kad stand up while hipping in; It wasn't just strength, not just timing, but being hips against and underneath Dake at the moment they stand is what led to the "counter"; I'm starting to wonder if "counter" is the word, since Kad was in control the whole time! The real question is "why didn't Dake let go when he felt himself being dragged around and loaded?"
That looks like Dakes basic attack - leg shot to chest grip-big trow, If opponent able to stop it -it meant dake without attacking weapon not many athletes would can admit to themself that they cant use their signature skill. Kadi like some aikido player used all Dake moves against him at many episodes I think Kadi is perfect enemy to Dake, Dake have chances to beat Sidakov but not Kadi . Kadi is too sensitive skilled and strong to just trow him but he is not that Agile and conditioned as Sidakov
I would consider it to be quite an achievement to be so good that the Russians have to study me and create a specific game plan to counter my most effective moves. They may have strategerized him out of Olympic gold, but I expect him to have an answer to their strategy going forward.
I would also like add Dake was circling behind Ghadzi and couldn't circle behind Khadi and was forced to be more chest to chest with Khadi which makes him out of position
Just one small correction, Gadzhimagomedov is pronounced Ga-letter G-magomedov. And Akhmed is pronounced with a silent k, just the h sound, like Khabib.
Excellent explanation and comparison of two matches. However, the main difference was Kadi is stronger. He *forced* everything you described with his strength.
I commented on the other video that Dake had been in the exact same position before and knew about it. He just got overpowered, which does not happen if Dake is feeling physically OK. But that's the Olympics. You get one shot and if you are not feeling right, nothing you can do.
I don't think Dake got the body lock vs. Kadi. He would be able to break the leg grip if he had it. He was chasing the body lock and kadi grabbed his leg as dake was trying to secure the lock. You can see dakes second arm awkwardly trying to secure a grip as he gets lifted and thrown.
