- This was released in 1992 by Konami, and composed by Taro Kudou (credited here as simply "Taro"), who is typically a game designer, often for off-beat Nintendo titles such as the first Mario & Luigi, Tingle's Rupeeland, and Super Mario RPG. His only other musical composition credit, also with Konami, is for the excellent Super CastleVania IV soundtrack (credited there as Souji Taro), which he composed with Masanori Adachi. I think one can certainly see the similarities in the music.
Unkai is Axelay's first stage theme, and has a very epic feeling to it. The music in Axelay is all pretty spectacular, but what is particularly interesing is that some of the boss themes, this stage included, are variations on the theme of the level they appear in. For a game to have different music for every boss is pretty amazing, but to tackle it like that is just plain cool.

Oh wow, I didn't know that at all! In SCIV, the "Rotating Room" level is my favorite and has some pretty cool basslines. They remind me of Axelay's stage 1 and stage 3 levels a lot. Good luck on finding out--I love VGMdb!

A Guy named DrossRotstank brought me here on a top hardest levels/bosses in gaming, at first no results on where this music came from until somebody told me, this is some godly SNES Music I stumbled across and it's awesome and hopefully it doesn't leave my mind on a positive note. :')

God when I got this game it looked so awesome. I felt the tingling in my fingers as I put it in my Super nes. I turned on the power, and the epic battle for the good of mankind began.

It is, but take a closer look to "Mushihimesama" and "Dodonpachi Daifukatsu" and you are in hell.
One of the best songs from the Super Nintendo. Great instruments and an AMAZING melody! This is some of the best videogames musiv EVER! Why? Cause it´s 1.) not streamed by a CD 2.) produced by the SNES sound processor! THIS IS AMAZING STUFF! Really impressive! SNES rules!

@RyuHayabusa06 That, Contra 3, U.N. Squadron, and ThunderForce 3 for the Genesis rank as my favorite shooters during the 16-bit era. Axelay though, has a special place in my heart because it removed the bad taste left from Konami's lackluster translation of Gradius 3 the year earlier.
This could seriously be an anime or a movie. I loved this theme, this and the second stage as well.
This would make an excellent series in the vein of Wing Commander, Exo Squad or even Battlestar Galactica.

I still say Axelay is the best shooter on either the SNES or Genesis. The only thing that could've made it even better is a couple more levels. Looking back at my old EGMs, there are pics of some different backgrounds. For instance, the first stage had some floating machinery above the clouds, rather than just rocks. I've looked for more info on these prototype levels but have yet to find any.
Probably the greatest shmup BGM on the SNES, and a serious Top 10 contender of all times best!

@silverbreath1 I loved the soundtrack in this game. It had very complex arrangements that you really didn't see alot of in 16 bit games back in the day. The Final Fantasy games (2 & 3), Actraiser, and this stand out as my favorites in terms of the quality tunes that the SNES could dish out.

Awesome tune, this is one of my favorites... this has an epic feel to it.

Always loved US SNES game boxes. PAL ones looked quite poor.
This game has the best soundtrack on the SNES.
Not just because it's expertly composed and fully utilises the SNES sound chip - a lot of games do that.
But where other games lack in comparison to Axelay is that Axelay's soundtrack EVOLVES over time in accordance to your position in the stage and the game as a whole. It perfectly fits what is happening on the screen, creating a harmony between the gameplay and music, which is fucking amazing. Never have I seen any other game do this.

@KRAFTWERK2K6 Music is so important. It's funny for something called a "video" game that audio is such a major factor, but still. There were a few companies that had the cream of the musical crop all throughout the SNES era: Nintendo (obviously), Capcom, Konami, SquareSoft, and Enix/Quintet (Actraiser... 'nuff said) had good music almost across the board, and there were a few other gems from smaller companies as well.

There were a few games from the SNES era that I thought had excellent music, and this for sure was up there with the best. In terms of space-shooters, only Super R-Type and R-Type 3 rival this in the music department, and the innovative "derive boss theme from stage theme" approach puts this ahead of both.
I could see this track done by orchestra plus metal band :-p

as someone who has done 16 bits music around those days i'd like to know how they did such a great synthetic bass slide. I owned the game, great buy probably too easy but then again most shmups were too hard so...at least i could finish this one! Probably my favorite on the snes along with Starfox.

@jstephenj Yeah, I hear you. Great passion lies within each track of this game. You gotta give credit to both the snes and the mind behind those songs. Theres not many snes music that catered for many different instruments and hold strong.

Thanx for posting this, man! Around the time this came out I believed Last Resort on the Neo Geo was the best shooter around. When I finally got it on CD a few years back I realized how superior Axelay had been.

lol at the two dislikes. I will say however that a good ammout of bass is required from either headphones or sufficient speakers. A lot of laptops simply dont output enough of a bass to hear these in their intended form
