if you paint the canvas with a basecoat of white the paint will be more smooth and you wont see speckles in it but I LOVE this technique It's always a fun video with E&K lol
One thing that I think would improve your paint distribution is to make sure to put your paint dots onto the tape border, rather than the canvas directly. That way it's already moving when it touches your canvas, and you don't get that blobby effect at the start. Except of course when you're doing it intentionally, like the cat ears and the fish :P
Yes... was coming here to say this! Also, the card stock worked better because of the smoother surface. Drag across texture is your enemy... Unless you are trying for that type of textured look... but it will change the drag coefficient, leaving bare spots AND pockets of paint. 😊
The koi painting was meant to be a surprise painting, and they are done kinda unique. You put the paint down in a thinner layer. It's meant to stain the paper not really paint it. Then you put of extra paint on top to do the squeegee part. Jazza did a video trying to figure it out and it looked really tricky.
Ok. the fancy squeegee is actually doing a much better job of being a squeegee. It is meant to remove as much of the fluid as possible. squeegees are meant to clean glass. the spackle tools are meant spread putty so they do a much better job of spreading the paint.
If I remember correctly I’m pretty sure Jazza did a whole video on squeegee painting which was a fascinating video to learn from if you guys ever wanted to do this again in your free time!
Fun fact: koi fish always swim in groups of 4! Scientists label them A,B,C, and D for tracking. When attacked by a predator, A, B, and C clump together and swim away as a group; which leaves the predator with the D koi.
another difference is definitely in the color choices. the reference ones have more cohesive palettes picked out than just whichever primary color bottles
I think you are forgetting a lesson you were given by Bob Ross. If you put a wet layer of pure white on the paper, the colors will flow easier. ;) Especially given your canvas has a texture.
The squeegees I’ve seen most tiktokers using are those blue ones you find at Dollar Tree. They’re a hard rubber end, so between the two types you have.
I’m a cake decorator, I wonder if using an offset spatula would work especially on the arches. There are other cake decorating scrapers that leaves designs as you scrape. Might be interesting just to experiment.

I wonder how it would work with a cheap regular acrylic? I feel like the flow medium in the acrylic pour paint doesn’t lend itself to mark making like this? But I’m also not very well versed in flow acrylic 🤷♀️
Thin cheap paint and a flat edge and drag against the canvas is how they all do it. I love that you guys went with other methods to see what other kinds of looks you can go for.
The metal squiggly is specific for showers, the rubber makes it stronger, that is why the paint almost disappears. If you see on the other videos, they are using a cheap plastic one.
Possibly the others would work better if the canvas/paper was prepped with a layer of white paint. It would allow the paint to stick better and it would roll longer maybe?
As an artist i can tell you that having pigmented paint AND a good paper are the most important things. I would also like to point out, that not everything that is expensive is good and not everything good is expensive.
In the koi example video, the online artist had a chunk strategicly taken out of their squeegee that allowed them to follow the shape of the koi and not have all the colors spread out so wide.
I do this all the time on canvas, it's a lot of fun. Your over thinking it. Add lines of paint and dots around and I use the cheapest squeegee the one without the handle. The RUBBER squeegee is no bueno!
I'd love to see them try this again after a bit more research. I'd definitely recommend watching Jazza's squeegee art videos since he seems to have nailed the technique.
I feel like you should look for a squeegee with a rubber tip, but a very thin strip, and not thicc like the one you were using. That way, it'll always drag the paint, but be soft enough to leave some
i love how evan took the expensive paint from katelyn like "no no honey, it's a pull-off lid not twisty..." and not even 2 minutes later he's struggling to pour from the cheap paint before realizing it's not even opened haha, such a typical adhd experience haha 😂
I mean… it makes sense the fancy squeegee thins out the paint more because the point of a good squeegee is to remove the liquid on whatever it’s being used on not leave a bunch of liquid.
You have ALL the POSCA PENS!!! 🙀 I do realize, however that showing us your Poscas was not the ENTIRE point of this great video. My favorite part was testing because of all the info about the paints, papers, & techniques (& squeegees). I love the art you created. I have no artistic skills whatsoever, but after watching I feel like I might have enough info to create something not hideous....? I still can't believe YOU HAVE ALL THE POSCA PENS!!! 🙀🙀 😁❤️
Random thought, but I would try regular acrylic paint instead of the fluid-art one... technically, the paint does not need to "flow" her, because it gets dragged... and maybe more paint would stick to the surface when it is thicker? And the lines would maybe stay more "in shape"... Just a guess tho...
Yes, that’s a lesson I learned myself some weeks ago as well. I made my own gelli-printing plates and tried gelli-printing for the first time … well, times - painful times until I got a result which was 🤔 erm, wasn’t bad 😅 Thanks for trying and showing this kind of art and that it’s not always as easy as it looks 👍
as someone who has used squeegees professionally for their intended purpose, it makes sense that a fancier one might absorb some amount of liquid while the cheaper one would be more likely to just push the liquid around
i have a theory: i think the fancy shower squeegee is pulling a lot of the paint with it because it’s meant to get water off a shower and not leave any behind so it’s scraping as much of the paint as possible like it would with water in a shower.
I'd love to see E&K do some clay sculpting projects in the future (especially since they have so much leftover clay from their air-themed resin sword).
This is just my guess but fir the koi fish the person probably put the paint thinner and let it dry a bit so the spots keep their shape but leaves a bit of a trail to make it more like they did it in one go And then they put white paint mixed with the colors only on the top so as the end the colors come threw and only there
My interpretation of the Koi fish: It's a koi fish that it's moving to a higher state of mind where he/she realized that no matter what other fish say, all that matters is for him/her to be happy, so the water is washing away it's orange, black and grey marks to become a fully white koi fish representing it's now peaceful state of mind.
