This Merovingian actor is freakin phenomenal. Can't believe he's not in more movies.
He is in a lot of French movies. Most French actors prefer to stay in France than in LA like Audrey Tautou when she became popular with Amelie.
Lambert Wilson is a very big star in France, he has already had the equivalent of an Oscar for best actor in France, he played in dramas or comedies, go to see him in "De Gaulle" recently or her performance as Celine Dion in a comedy "Marsupilami" 😂, a person very charismatic too
He does not consider himself Hollywood compatible, he has it explained in interviews in France, he likes american people but not the cinema industry which he considers too hypocritical whereas in France, if it's not going well, if it's not okay we don't pretend

You have to feel for Persephone. She was in love, and now it's a loveless relationship of one-upmanship. When she feels that kiss from Neo, and then sees what Trinity will do to save the one she loves (Edit-starting at 18:07), she is entranced by the idea...and perhaps a little envious, too.

Persephone, Persephone, Persephone... My favourite background character in The Matrix trilogy/ series. Vastly underestimated and yet she is willing to go to any end to sow discontent and confusion. Amazes me how she can break the calm and collected Trinity with just one request...

I really like the tempo of it when Morpheus tries to stop Trinity from shooting Persephone... it's flawless.
These movies were so brilliantly done. The more I watch these scenes back the more I see and understand things that I missed. The Merovingian is right : If you are living in a machine generated dream world then choice is an illusion. You think you have choice but your "options" are restricted and limited to the instructional code of The Matrix. I love how the The Twins just casually grin and nod in agreement as Merovingian asks "But then if we do not ever take time, how can we ever have time?" And Persephone is just nauseated by his constant bloviating and so envious of Trinity's love for Neo. 😉

When she makes the comment about Trinity being in love with Neo, she says it with such understated awe, as if that kind of love is something she's heard about, but has never seen. She knows that she is with Merv, and their relationship is a game of give-and-take, but she wants to be with someone who loves her the way Trinity and Neo love each other.

The older i get the more i understand the Merovingians actions and words and how he wasnt even really a villain. He was just trying for self preservation and survival which. He understood the matrix better than probably anyone else and he knew what Neos presence meant for him. Brilliantly written character.

I have a possible theory that the Merovingian was “the One” from the second version of the Matrix where Werewolf’s, Vampires, Angels, etc existed. Of course making a deal with the Architect to continue on his conscious through the Matrix before returning to the source. Hence why Persephone said that he was much different coming to this place, that he was once like Neo, and how Persephone loved him just like how Trinity loves Neo.

@@darthpanic4007 The Merovingian represents Hades, ruler of the Underworld. Persephone represents the goddess Persephone, who married to Hades against her will, but commands the respect of the Underworld. This is why Persephone in The Matrix is so well respected by The Merovingian's men.
But that would make him a few hundred years old. I doubt the machines were capable or willing to keep him alive that long.

Because when some other ladies had handsome boys, she will try to flirt with them. First kiss was fake, second was far too romantic.

I really wish there was more behind-the-scenes footage of this restaurant scene - it is an AMAZING set, it is such an incredibly grand and impressive restaurant, I always loved the design of the windows. The little green squares remind of those Mondrian paintings, but I guess they are meant to represent the Matrix code as though the restaurant were a computer program, of which the Merovingian is its author

Quite the opposite, actually. He is there to make sure that the prophecy happens, one way or another. In other circumstances, I believe he would let Trinity kill anyone if it meant the prophecy would get fulfilled. However because they didn't have the Key maker yet, and Persephone knew where he was, he had to make Trinity tone it down some.
The irony is that the second guard here is one of the first to be killed by Neo in that Chateau fight scene when Neo kicked him through the statue on the bottom right of the staircase.

I now realised that Neo has given Percephone programmatically a sample of love: the feelings that a human expirience when thinking of beloved one, of possessing them, the absolute bliss. This is why no matter of control it is important for the path of the one to be stepped by a human willingly. Then they walk through another set of desires: love for a food, attaction to the goal, to filter the feeling of love from others. The series of 'trials' the One must conquest is a way for 'the machines' to learn this feeling from different angles. The power of love is so strong it can even dismiss a fear of death. Merovingian knows what happens behind the scenes, he even shows Neo, yet Neo fails to understand the politics: this is exactly how the machines created love between him and Trinity. The same process will happen in the fourth movie.

The lighting on Persephones face at 8:59 is simply amazing-makes her appear so evil.
Its reminiscent of Dino de Laurentiis films from the late 1960’s and early 70’s. You can see good examples of it in two films in particular one is King of Kings with Jeffrey Hunter as Jesus and the other I believe is called Waterloo with Rod Steiger as Napoleon. The camera centers on just their face and the lighting is a sort of rectangle across the eyes.
Its also done in the Omen movies. There are so many nods to film and literature of the past that it can be difficult to keep track of all of them.

Only in the game did it expound on the Merovingian and his ilk. They are all Vampires and ghouls or a version of such. Fantastic idea for some interesting characters.
They should have been the main villains of Reloaded. Rogue vampire programs trying to infect/drain The Matrix now that the Agents lost control because of Neo.
