Remember moving to Sydney in the late sixties while a teenager from Liverpool UK. So much has changed since I moved to the Central West in 77 but I was there at the opening of the Opera and consider that ten pound well spent - so do my six kids and ten grandchildren.
Sydney is still the most beautiful harbour city in the world. The combination of weather, landscape, cleanliness, comfort and technology is just the best.
Our house in NW Sydney backs on to a small bush reserve with a creek and we have a family of eastern water dragons living in our backyard. Great for keeping the bugs down!
This series has been a massive eye opener for myself and wife as we were never sure about visiting Australia. When Lt Cook made his first landfall in Australia in 1770, be landed at a large bay south of current day Sydney, which he called Stingray Harbour, (now called Botany Bay) when he left he had fair winds as he sailed north up the coast, well off shore, and was keen to continue on so he made a note as he passed the entrance to Sydney Harbour that there might be a suitable anchorage in there! Eighteen years later in 1788 the first fleet arrived with Gov Phillip in command, he didn't like Botany Bay, so he headed north in a small boat to investigate the 'anchorage' that Cook had seen, and as he entered through the headlands and turned south what a sight he saw! He commented that you could anchor a thousand ships of the line here with room to spare, and as they say the rest is history.

Fort Denison is a Martello Tower and is the only complete example in the world. It was built between 1841 & 1857 to defend against potential invasions from France and other enemies. When completed twelve 32 pounder (three in the tower), two 10 inch shell guns, one 8 inch shell gun and one 12 pounder carronade were installed. Other guns were installed around the harbour up to the heads to welcome adversaries. The fort is built on a rocky outcrop they called Pinchgut Island which is where they put their difficult convicts for a week or so on bread and water to keep them in line.

Hi Lee, if you get chance please try and go to the spice ally for a meal it is amazing. Sydney is a wonderful place. Also take the train out to the blue mountains its stunning you won't regret it plus the trains are so cheap. Keep up the great vids from Oz.
i liked the old manly ferries , the really big ones, in the 50's i went on them and could look down to the engine and see massive steam beams and huge lumps of iron moving ,i was almost hypnotised by the massive movement and noise. the closest now is the freshwater ferry . the good old days.those old ferried cmae out from scotland under their own steam . all that way.
Lee, mate, get yourself a decent sunhat. We have the highest rates of skin cancer in the world and you are a prime candidate. Even your expat mate has a proper hat!. Glad you took the ferry to Manly, its a decent trip.
Lovely video, I might move there.. oh wait I live here already . Nice to see home from the prospective of fresh eyes. I’m heading to the UK in May, can’t wait as I’ve never been there. Shocked to hear we will need coins for public loos though. Thanks for heads up 😊
Fort dennison is actually not a penal colony. Its a Fort 😅 It was built in the 1800s at a time when the British Empire was in a geopolitical struggle with Russia. They were afraid of a Russian naval attack. Never got used though. You can visit it too, its pretty interesting.
When I lived at the northern end of Manly beach at Queenscliff I often went scuba diving at Shelley Beach. I only saw one shark. It was a small Port Jackson shark and it was quite happy to keep away from me. I also took a photo of the large lizard you saw (or a relative of it) in the same spot as you. In fact it came up as a Facebook memory only yesterday.
He seems like a really nice guy, but he doesn't really know his stuff. Well, not enough to be commenting on it anyway. A lot of what he said was factually incorrect.
From the English I have spoken to over the years, they all say fish & chips in Australia especially with chicken salt leave their's for dead. They have all said English fish & chips are an oily slop. Chips are oily and the batter on the fish is often not cooked on the inside. Our fish over here is a nicer flavour. So why would that be? My wife is English and her family loves coming out here and feasting on our fish & chips.
Because it's England's 'claim to fame historic dish'...only it's fresher & healthier here & not what they're used to ..& they miss their oily slop. 🤷♂️
Love the video. - Manly is a cool place. When we went, the ferry ride got very bumpy for the last five minutes after it left the bay and headed into the ocean. We’re heading to Sydney next week so I’m looking forward to your review of Harry’s. I love meat pies and found Harry’s to be the poorest pie I’ve had in over 20 years of visiting the country. So here’s hoping …
I love Manly; my mum in Ireland loves Manly. Likes to visit if she can. But how many people have died from jellyfish and Blue ring octopus in the last 10 years?? Or even the previous 100 years? Nothing compared to car accidents. It's deadlier to get in a car than encounter any venomous animal. Time to stop the scaremongering about how deadly animals are in Australia. Australia is a very safe place to visit. It could be better, but it's safer than most countries. And it's beautiful!! Look up the statistics!!
Bringing back memories, we went to Palm beach, got a bus from Manly to Warringah Mall then another to Palm beach, it was empty... are you goint to 3 sisters lookout point, amazing
The sandstone building Fort Denison was built to repel the Russians back in the day in the 1800’s but before that it was just an island that the colony used to put prisoners on and it was referred to as “pinchgut” presumably because you didn’t get fed very well as a prisoner sent there.
Yes a completely different experience 😂! I told Lee off cam.... I was terrified . No one was allowed outside on the ferry and we all had to stay seated!
another awesome video, andrew is a nice guy. Beautiful scenery on the way to Manly, which has great beach , lovely place. Really enjoying your Sydney videos Lee, as well as the Perth ones 😊😊
Have you eaten the Aussie FIsh and Chips? You do not have the better FIsh and Chips. Do the ferry trip at night or dusk when the city lights up and bats fly over from the Botanical Gardens. It's not just the Manly ferry there are ferries everywhere, even far west to Parramatta over 20km away called The River Cat. Sydney has many harbours. The main one is Sydney Harbour but there is also Middle Harbour, Botany Bay, Port Hacking, Pittwater, Brisbane Waters and Broken Bay. Middle Harbour and Botany Bay are the only ones that don't have ferries. There are also islands in most of the harbours. The ferries go to several in Sydney Harbour, Pittwater and Broken Bay. See if you can catch the Penguins in Manly coming in at dusk.
@@elizabethtout7163 Fantastic. That area has huge potential. "It's called the car hill expressway" :O And he calls himself an Aussie? And wow - one of the few Starbucks left! Avoid at all costs - you can get good coffee all over the place.
Sadly, Starbucks numbers is increasing in Australia. More and more Aussies are embracing 💩 product. In the last few years alone, my area went from 1 Starbucks to three and it isn't a tourist destination. There are 69 Starbucks locations in Australia as of 1st March, 2024.
From the Sunshine Coast, as I haven't been to Sydney for many years I found this video was very relaxing with the water views and leisurely commentary. With regards to the credit card surchage this can be avoided by the option of debiting your savings account instead of your credit card as long as the two are linked.
A very good video, my mate lives in Manly 👍🏻 A couple of items in the 32:34 dialogue had me grasping for the chunder bucket : a) Woke erasure of colonisation from history, place names etc b) The puerile apologist welcome to Sydney landing announcement about elders etc. c) Taylor Swift
There are literally thousands of places already named after aboriginal names. It is purely grandstanding by people that think this shows their moral superiority while accepting mass immigration policies. Australia cannot be pro mass immigration and also pro aboriginal, not to mention zero-emmisions. Are the immigrants all living in grass huts and eating ze bugs or are they just a short cut to wage suppression and high house prices for the rich? (the answer is neiother, its all a con)

Fort Dennison was never like Alcatraz it was built as a fort with batteries of cannons when the the napoleonic wars gave them fear the French may attack.
Fort Dennison as a nickname.....It also had prisoners. Pinchgut due to prisoners were hung from the side of the fort, and the chains pinched the stomachs.
@@chriscarrick1513 Pichgut WAS the nickname, Fort Dennison the real name, never meant to house prisoners. Before the construction of the Fort i was already named Pinchbut Island and prisoners who commited more serious crimes and re offenders were often marooned there with just the basics, bread and water, which "inched" their gut. The concept of being hanged by the stomach is not true and I defy you ro provide credible reference points. The hanging of Francis Morgan in 1796 when the gibbet was built there gave more to the meaning of pinchgut than myth as when they hung him they left his body strung up for 4 years. As to Palm Beach being no where near Manly, it aint that far and I think what they meant is that is ON THE PENINSULA. It is amazing how you can draw such cantakerous accounts .
Great video, Lee . im glad you ventured over to manly . I used to go to high school up the hill from manly whalf. Great memories. Give the flathead a go, mate. it's one of the big favs of the nation .
Andrew is a lovely man! Here in NSW, if you are a permanent resident and 60 or over, you can get a Seniors Card which lets you travel on the entire Sydney public transport system, including light rail and ferries, hopping on and off as much as you want, for $2.50 for the whole day. You can go way outside the city limits by train for the same fare - like as far as Orange which is 3-4hrs by car. One of the few bargains for old farts in a pretty expensive city! Our public transport really is something to be proud of - safe, clean, efficient, comfortable, extensive.
Sounds really nice, we could see OZ was clean as soon as Lee landed, its a pity the UK never seems as tidy, people just need to pick up after themselves and care more, its not difficult...
An Englishman arrives at Sydney airport and goes into panic and screams " THeres a Huge UFO in the sky" Aussie says WHERE WHERE ? Englishman says" cant you see its a Huge circlular Yellow UFO" Aussie says Thats not a UFO thats the sun, havent you ever seen it before.
Great video of Manly Lee. I would also recommend you go to the Rocks area near the Harbour Bridge. Also go to Bondi and walk to the beaches south of it, just a couple of kilometres.
Starbucks in many countries is totally over priced , why pay $8 for a cup of tea at Starbucks when a tea bag only costs under 10 cents at the supermarket .

Sydney is such a wonderful place and a trip there isnt complete without a trip over to MANLY, done it may times and love the place, dont miss the yummy gelato in the Manly ferry building !
I hate food in videos. Dunno why people post 'em. Watching people eat is not a favourite pastime of mine. If there's a "food" video I'll just skip right past that one. On shark nets, if you knew how deep they go, you wouldn't be feeling as safe. One of the reasons that folk dislike them is that, they kill wildlife and they're not very effective in keeping sharks away. They don't reach to the sea bed by any stretch, so Sharks can easily swim around or under them. (how safe are you feeling now?)
Nice one Lee , enjoyed it very much fella . Thank you for your hard work too , as obviously we see the finished article from the comfort of our living room Lee !! 👍
Fort Denizen was never a prison. It is a fort built to defend Sydney against a potential Russian invasion in the 1800s. Its cannons have never been fired
Yeah the fort never was but the small island its built on was used in the early days of the colonies to put troublesome convicts on. It was nicknamed "Pinchgut" by the convicts due to the poor food which was rowed across once a day by guards. SOme convicts were also gibbetted there. One particular one hung in chains for four years from 1796. At his execution when asked for any last words he said to the hangman that the only thing worth mentioning was the superb view of the harbour from his high elevation, and that he was sure there were no waters the world over to compare with it for beauty...
It was called pinchgut before the fort was built, it was a prison for the most incorrigible prisoners, they called it pinchgut because they weren’t fed very often It also has an indigenous name Mat-te-wan-ye, also spelt Muttewai, meaning 'rocky island'.

@@Teagirl009 I hear you too! For some reason two of my comments have been deleted/removed and I have no idea as to why. I'm just making suggestions or explaining something eg. one comment said they would never come down here because of the water dragons. I gave some info about them and how they're harmless and part of the much loved nature here, even in the city. There was another comment to the original and it seems we've both had our info removed. Baffling to say the least.
Hi Lee, if you get chance please try and go to the spice ally for a meal it is amazing. Sydney is a wonderful place. Also take the train out to the blue mountains its stunning you won't regret it plus the trains are so cheap. Keep up the great vids from Oz.
Yes spice alley is really good!
i liked the old manly ferries , the really big ones, in the 50's i went on them and could look down to the engine and see massive
steam beams and huge lumps of iron moving ,i was almost hypnotised by the massive movement and noise. the closest now is the freshwater ferry . the good old days.those old ferried cmae out from scotland under their own steam . all that way.
Me too
I’m visiting Sydney next month. You’ve already got me saving that pie shop as a place to visit. Good value for money, look forward to you rating it.
Its a Fort 😅
It was built in the 1800s at a time when the British Empire was in a geopolitical struggle with Russia.
They were afraid of a Russian naval attack.
Never got used though.
You can visit it too, its pretty interesting.
It was around the time of the Crimean War I think.
Nice video. It might have been better to have had someone along with a bit knowledge of what we were seeing, describe the sights.
Great companion today, knows his stuff, very likeable. My brother lived in Manly for nine years and now lives in Perth WA.
As an Australian why the feck would you put chicken salt on fish? It’s ok on chips, but that’s just heathen stuff letting it anywhere near fish
I just came back for Scotland fish and chips were great Haddock
Chicken salt on everything seafood, are you really an Australian?🙄🙄😖😖🤣🤣@@troy906
Try and get up to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains Lee, and while you are there , go take a look at famous “ 3 Sisters” rock formation.
Cable car up and train going down is brill. Walk down to the 3 sisters under the arch ways.
Sydney is lovely. The only problem is that there's too many bloody people.
You need to come to Adelaide and try a pie floater. It's a meat pie floating in a bowl of pea and ham soup and is quite the local delicacy.
Don't forget the sunscreen. The Sydney sun leaves Poms looking like baked lobsters.
Beat me to it. Was going to comment exactly the same thing.
Hi Lee. I wanna go!!!!!!!!! Thanks for your interesting videos. . Its freezing here in Blackpool. Got the heating on. 🥶 Enjoy.......xx
Ask him about the Ferry ride on a rough day
Yes a completely different experience 😂!
The ferry wharf is under way at La Perouse to bring back ferries to Kurnell, so you’ll be able to cross off Botany Bay on that list soon.
@@elizabethtout7163 Fantastic. That area has huge potential. I hope the Light Rail finally makes it all the way down to Little Bay and wherever they position the Ferry Terminal with a continuation on the other side down to Cronulla.

You will find the best fish and chips at another gem of Australia, Sorrento Melbourne.
Done that a few times in 2017 and 2019 and loved it, Manly is great. Just booked Perth for my 50th Birthday in January, Thought I'd try the other side of OZ this time.
"It's called the car hill expressway" :O And he calls himself an Aussie? And wow - one of the few Starbucks left! Avoid at all costs - you can get good coffee all over the place.
Wanted a Strawberry Frappuccino
Sadly, Starbucks numbers is increasing in Australia. More and more Aussies are embracing 💩 product. In the last few years alone, my area went from 1 Starbucks to three and it isn't a tourist destination. There are 69 Starbucks locations in Australia as of 1st March, 2024.
It's spelt Cahill Expressway
@@chriscarrick1513 And pronounced Carl, not Car-hill
As an aside, it was named after the NSW Premier, whose government had been responsible for the construction.
From the Sunshine Coast, as I haven't been to Sydney for many years I found this video was very relaxing with the water views and leisurely commentary. With regards to the credit card surchage this can be avoided by the option of debiting your savings account instead of your credit card as long as the two are linked.
The Cashless Society. What could go wrong. You will own nothing and be happy.
I understand that China has gone or is going cashless from a Chinese visitor I recently met.
But remember "cash is king" to many people
It was great Lee. Fabulous trip, wonderful scenery. Makes me wanna go!! Loved the shrimp. Real nice guy is Andrew. Onwards to the next one!!😄
It was fun shooting these vids with Lee too 👍
A very good video, my mate lives in Manly 👍🏻 A couple of items in the 32:34 dialogue had me grasping for the chunder bucket :
a) Woke erasure of colonisation from history, place names etc b) The puerile apologist welcome to Sydney landing announcement about elders etc. c) Taylor Swift
Funny how many men have it in for Taylor Swift 🤔

There are literally thousands of places already named after aboriginal names. It is purely grandstanding by people that think this shows their moral superiority while accepting mass immigration policies. Australia cannot be pro mass immigration and also pro aboriginal, not to mention zero-emmisions. Are the immigrants all living in grass huts and eating ze bugs or are they just a short cut to wage suppression and high house prices for the rich? (the answer is neiother, its all a con)
Hey love I am watching this again because it's brilliant and its lovely to see the all the beautiful buildings around . and the Sydney Opra house and the bridge . fantastic video again hun you have done it again fantastic work ❤ xxx
The fort was a fort! The fort was erected to defend the harbour from possible Russian attack - colonial era.
Enjoyed this so much as “ a true blue Aussie “ and definitely overdue for a visit to Sydney Harbour while living on the North coast of NSW . This is an education for many 😊
The First Nation thing you were talking about when coming in by plane is not normal. It’s a fairly new thing that has been introduced.
It's woke.
I'd guess it came in to be rammed down people's throats for the referendum and the losers don't want to drop it.
@@TheMacMasterVERY woke.....it's nauseating🤮
Just as bad as some pathetic smoking ceremony rubbish before every sporting event. Piss this rubbish off
Worse luck. Very woke nonsense.

Hi Lee great footage loved it 🥰 lovelly guest as well the boat trip amazing scenery ❤ brill take care xx
Stand up to them. If they say no not cash must be card, say: no cash, I walk and walk out
Great video, Lee . im glad you ventured over to manly . I used to go to high school up the hill from manly whalf. Great memories. Give the flathead a go, mate. it's one of the big favs of the nation .
Manly is just great!
That must be one of the few remaining Starbucks. Their coffees are disgusting, so no surprise they failed in Australia.
It wasnt there when i used to frequent Manly, Not sure why it is there, Tourists?
@@barryross8382I wondered the same. I was at manly a couple of weeks ago and didn’t even notice it 😂
Andrew is a lovely man!
They don't look after our elderly any more in the UK 😢
Sounds really nice, we could see OZ was clean as soon as Lee landed, its a pity the UK never seems as tidy, people just need to pick up after themselves and care more, its not difficult...
@@kevinmott6205 Nothings too much cost or trouble with arrivals to the UK. We even ferry them ashore to Treasure Island
You forgot Barangaroo it's a nice from the rocks.
Starbucks coffee tastes like sewage water👎
Wow, you drink sewage water. I’ve never tried that myself.
Starbucks in many countries is totally over priced , why pay $8 for a cup of tea at Starbucks when a tea bag only costs under 10 cents at the supermarket .
Another great review some amazing views from the ferry court some bang on ones injoy ya self m8 keep them comeing going to watch your other one now on wards take care stay safe
Too Crowded, its like Bournemouth.
there are other people to show you around then pommies they dont know much about australia

I have tasted fish and chips in England, they were greasy and over cooked
Same here, give me Aussie beer-battered flathead any day over that greasy English crap.
Check out the pubs mate. Nice little Australian pub called Fortune of War at the Rocks, the oldest pub in Sydney.
It was called pinchgut before the fort was built, it was a prison for the most incorrigible prisoners, they called it pinchgut because they weren’t fed very often
It also has an indigenous name Mat-te-wan-ye, also spelt Muttewai, meaning 'rocky island'.
This is true... Sorry fellow historians. I muddled fort Denison with cockatoo island 👍
Really like Sydney and have been to the Vivid Sydney light show a few times. This video has prompted me to book flights and accommodation for this year’s Vivid festival.
Virtually every city look great when show casing the tourist spots, even London does. However after living in Sydney for five years in the older suburbs where every house has metal bars on the windows to prevent theft it’s not that great.
I’ve lived in Sydney way longer than that and it’s a fantastic place to live= always has been.
