I got a 440i and bought an extended warranty with it and after a month of having it I flashed BM3 STG2 and snapped my drive shaft using launch control. my warranty covered it so I think if you have a shop that you know will help you keep quiet about the modified stuff to your warranty you should be all good.

I took my 540 to the dealer for the “free” repair on the active grill issue. When I picked the car up my service advisor pulled me to the side and told me realized my car was tuned (BM3) and said he had to remove the tune so to not void my warranty and replaced it with the BMW MPPSK tune at no extra cost. I’d rather the BM3 but I’m thankful my service guy looked out for me!

  • @marks8068

Usually they can tell, and that will void your warranty on engine/driveline. (ex dealer tech talking here) but it depends on the customer/dealer relationship. A returning customer who has their car serviced regularly at the dealership might get lucky, at least at the dealership I worked at we didnt make a huge problem of software or even hardware mods as long as the mods were done properly, and didnt have a relation to the problem the customer claimed warranty on.
Like tune+blown cat=get lost, you probably caused it yourself, but a tune+broken timing belt before its "change by" mileage would not be a problem.

So I just went through this in my 2020 x3m. I snapped my driveshaft after an BM3 tune and a 10.7 run. I returned to stock. When I took it in as soon as they plugged in the scan notified BMW North America. At this point it was not up to the dealership. BMW NA contacted the dealer and told them to stop diagnosis while they research. the dealer said they are required to plug in on all drivetrain related damages. they said we can see its been tune. we done know the tune but its been run outside their safe parameters. Warranty void and trade in value is now considered wholesale.

Very helpful, thank you…lets say you’re like screw the warranty, I’m gonna take my chances… 3-4 years go by no issues, and now its time to sell the car. If you remove all software/hardware, will the dealer still let you trade it in? Or sell it back? This is perhaps more important than the the tune blowing something up and warranty not covering it, considering you choose the right tune and install it correctly.

    • @kern417

First up is like normal. You plug it in, it does a diagnostic scan, and let you know if they are any open recalls or service reminders. If you get lucky and it's something that doesn't need diagnostics then you may get around it. But as soon as they plug it in it'll pick up the tune.

So, what happens if you buy your car from a BMW dealer as a used car? Say it's 4-5 years old, they still provide you with a 12 month warranty. What happens if one of the previous owners has tuned the car and you take it in with a problem? How would they ever prove that?

I've seen multiple accounts of people being screwed over because they bought a car that they didn't know was tuned. They're supposed to do the same diagnostic before putting a warranty on a car but I think they don't do it all the time.
