    -- How I make my videos --
    I use Final Cut Pro on my custom built Xeon E3 Hackintosh, and film with a Canon EOS 60D. I use a pair of large fluorescent studio lights for most of my work, but may use various other types if filming away from the room I usually film in. I have a really overfilled lab, which is usually where I dig up the tech seen in my videos.

    -- Music --
    The music used in the Dodoid and Dodoid Advent Calendar 2016 intros is AdhesiveWombat - Bombs. The music used in the Dodoid Advent Calendar 2017 intro is AdhesiveWombat - Tinybit. Other AdhesiveWombat songs are sometimes used.
    This video uses the song Pretty Lights - Forever Lost.

    It’s been almost 2 years now, when are we gonna get some new information about D1?

    Hey Dodoid! We wish to see your D1 project! What is the status? We want new software for our IRIX!

    Damn Dodoid, that looks like a great idea for repurposing old Silicon Graphics machines! Keep up with the good work ;)

      you're lucky to live in a place that SGI workstations are not as expensive as where i live, here in Brazil, a Silicon Graphics Indy, with a MIPS R4600 (just the workstation, not even the blue casing) goes for 2.316 USD but a indy on ebay (fully featured, with matching mice, keyboard webcam and software) goes for around 491 USD, way cheaper than where i live, i would try to import one, but shipping big things (even though not as big as a O2 or a Onyx) gets expensive because here we got a thing called alfândega that reviews imported packages, and reviewing the weight and caliber of the thing they can make you pay almost half of the price of the machine, well; hope you finish your project soon! ;)

    any news on this? i literally cannot wait, just take my money already.. you seriously should do a kickstarter or something. one question though, will this be compatible with my octane 2?

    • @Dodoid
      @Dodoid  6 лет назад +5

      Hi there!
      Due to what I believe to be IRIX/IRIX64 differences, this is to my understanding only compatible with the O2 and O2+. This is because the chipset used by the SGI hardware I reverse-engineered to design its interface to the host system does not seem to work under IRIX64. Of course, if someone wants to give porting it a shot, they are welcome to, and someone with more knowledge of IRIX drivers than me may be able to get going with less effort than I expect. I actually haven't had to write any drivers here, as, like I said, it uses the same chipset as an official SGI card sold as an option in some O2s.
      I have tested it in my Octane 1 with shoebox (the D1 is a PCI card), and I can confirm that it seems NOT to work. While figuring out why this is will require further testing, I suspect it is a 64 bit difference, as it works fine in the 32 bit O2. Of course, it is also possible that IRIX is simply set up to blacklist the card on non-O2 platforms, in which case there may be a software workaround. This is the sort of thing that someone more familiar with how IRIX handles these things might be able to figure out where I might just say "doesn't work".
      One good thing about the D1 is that R5000 O2s, while slow on their own, should still be a perfectly usable system with a D1 installed (the performance of software on the D1 is not tied to the performance host system whatsoever, and "hybrid compute" tasks like streaming, transcoding, and scaling down RUclips H.264 video on the D1's quad core processor, streaming it back to the host as MPEG2, and rendering it with mplayer's "sgi" output on the O2's CRM chipset should still be feasible). That means that even if a possible buyer doesn't own a compatible SGI (or any SGI at all) right now, getting one shouldn't be too difficult or expensive, as cheap R5000 O2s aren't that pricey even on eBay, and they are relatively abundant.
      As for Kickstarter, I have enough funding to develop this product. While crowdfunding campaigns are fun and exciting, they are ultimately a way to raise money for R&D and first production runs of a product, which is something I can comfortably fund off of Mini Indigo profits. I also have easily enough equipment to manufacture at the required scale (which is NOT large) in my own house, so there's no need to pay for a factory to make these things. This way, there is also less responsibility to backers if I opt to change something, if the product needs to be delayed, or if somehow I realize it just doesn't work (though all of these are highly unlikely outcomes at this point).
      If you want one, no need to back a sketchy campaign. The D1's website will go up at dodoid.net/d1 a few days before the product launches, and when it does, you will be able to order one directly.
      I should give it another shot in an Octane. It may be more trivial than I think. Perhaps I should ship some prototype hardware off to someone who knows IRIX drivers and offer a free production D1 to whoever gets it working first :)

    What? Is that new software for existing irix? Or is it a new setup that is Irix like?

    • @Dodoid
      @Dodoid  6 лет назад +6

      D1 is a hardware device, it goes in a slot on a real SGI with real IRIX. Software-wise, it does work alongside its included software tools, but it is not solely a software product.

      Thanks! I'll copypaste something I posted to Nekochan (which celebrated its fifteenth birthday today) here:
      D1 is my fifteenth birthday present to Nekochan and to the SGI community. It's a new category of device, not a Mini Indigo successor. The video is a bit light on detail, but I hope I can have some more info for you (including maybe some prototype board photos of D1-PT-02 ;) ) soon.

      Well, colour me impressed. I'm guessing this runs as some kind of expansion card. Also, I wonder if you plan to integrate "xsettingsd" and/or "qt5ct" (tools for enforcing settings in GTK and Qt applications)?\
      Also, I like how you decided to make that look like the SGI System Manager, albeit with your logo in place of the SGI logo.

      The current D1-PT-01 development hardware is not to be displayed publicly, but D1-PT-02 hardware will probably be shown online. You might see some prototype pics, likely on Nekochan, in a few weeks.

      thats firefox 37 or newer, 6 looked different. anyways you need a D1 expansion card to do that.

    • @Dodoid

      ESR 52.5.2 right now. Could run newer, just depends what you install. Yes, a D1 is needed.

      There is a Nekochan thread where people are speculating, and I have chimed in a few times :) . Development hardware still under wraps (you must remember, it's not production ready yet and isn't going on sale until the spring), hope to have more details out about it in a couple of weeks.
