Clear, concise and well put together. Your videos are always very informative and have helped me many times to keep my ageing Disco 1 on the road. Many thanks, Chris.
What would be an acceptable amount of backlash, on the transfer case when locked, between the front and rear outputs ... Also, noticing a '2nd phase' on the backlash, where part of blacklash range feels like more resistance ( almost like a 3rd mesh surface has play as well ). Please never take these vids away. They are a godsend. And with a revival of older LR products in north america, hopefully more views for your awesome catalogue.
Thank you for the presentation and Greetings from Paris ! I have a defender TD5 year 2003. If I up-shift quickly with high RPM from 1st to 2d, or 2d to 3d, I feel a crunch/grind in my hand (not so loud to hear it in the vehicle, I can just feel it with my hand). If I leave the RPM/rev normal, and leave a 1 second pause on Neutral between these gears, all is fine. No crunch when downshifting. The gearbox runs with new MTF94 oil. Is this a normal behavior for a R380 ? Are we supposed to UP shift slowly with these gearboxes, losing momentum ? Losing momentum is not an issue on flat road, but annoying climbing a slope. Many thanks for your help and feedback ! Julien
Hi Chris , great videos . I have a 110 that has recently had the transfer box replaced with a reputable recon unit . When turning any jacked up wheel there’s a lot of resistance , also reluctant to get into Diff Lock . Any ideas ? Oil is new and good!
could you do a video/tutorial on how to setup the transfer box linkage? mine will only stay in low range if i hold it in position and i cannot get into difflock at all :(
Hi, great video's btw , could I add a Cdl To my 04 disco simply by swapping the front housing from a Cdl fitted box or will I have to swap the whole transfer box , cheers john
Chris are these checks relevant to a Disco 2? I have a small amount of backlash on overrun when driving, hardly any when taking up drive. Is this to be expected? Great videos the Td5 non start ones were a great help when i replaced my injector harness and fuel pump. Great resource!
I have a question. I once saw an old boy stranded in his 110 Defender. I pulled over and he had lost drive but then the clue came, he said his handbrake had failed also. I put the vehicle centre diff lock in and got him going again. What had failed? I am guessing something in the transfer box?
Hi, could have been a broken half shaft either front or rear. Had similar with my 110. I got to a garage 20k away slowly in diff lock Hi. Turned out one rear shaft was broken. Diff lock diverted power to front wheels instead of wasted spinning the broken rear. I stand to be corrected.
Hi, I really find your videos helpful, I am only beginning to learn about Land Rover maintenance with my Defender 90 300Tdi. I have a question, I hear a squeaking noise when driving slowly, it comes from the bottom of the car, and I'm pretty sure it's the propshaft. Is it a serious problem? I know a diagnosis via RUclips comments is a bit of a stretch, but I just want to know if it could be a big issue before I try to fix it myself. Thanks!
+sebaaaa56 any noise that shouldn't be there will be ab issue eventually. Could it be your brakes? might be worth a check of your wheel bearing play. If you have a fair bit of brake pedal travel then this is a good sign. Other squeals could be aux. drive belt. Never heard a prop shaft squeal.
you can visually check the second hand unit for wear and damage. Transfer box on the other hand are much more difficult to assess without stripping out and checking properly.
Hey. I'm never had the chance to try so I'm asking you now. Do you have to use the clutch pedal to move and engage the shifting lever for diff locks/ awd/ gear ruduction? I don't unterstand how to do that.
Noisy transmissions???....... are you referring to gearbox chatter or something else???.......by the way do you know if anything can be done on gearbox chatter
`you have to work out if it is the clutch springs rattling or the bearings chattering. The gearbox may need stripping and inspected to work out why the gearbox chatters. there is no magic bullet to cure this one.

Please don't ever delete anny video of yours! They are lifesavers !
At the moment I own a TDI 300, my previous was a tdi 200 and these vid's are just great!
Good evening from Tahiti. I've got a Land rover Defender 90 tdi. So, your videos are really interesting and useful for me. Thank you Sir for that.
Very informative , I had always believed that my defenders oil leaks were a LR patented idea to prevent rust ? Thanks for sharing .
excellent quality tutorial as usual

Excellent video,a must watch for Land Rover owners,
Love your videos could watch them all day long 😉😉💯
Great video, such a fine selection of videos. Appreciated the jacking tips too.
That's a few things to be checking, just need the weather to clear up
Great tutorial, think mine's got some play in it, but that's for another day, still on the welding phase!

the list is getting bigger and bigger Chris lol, bloody good videos tho,
Great video.👍

Yeah it is the same principle.

I understand a slight clunk when letting out the clutch is normal... if the engine speed isnt matched correctly with speed... is this correct?
yeah it is quite slack in there.
Any thoughts on buying second hand diff's or transfer boxes, is there any way of telling if the unit is good or bad if it's off the vehicle?
you can visually check the second hand unit for wear and damage. Transfer box on the other hand are much more difficult to assess without stripping out and checking properly.

Hell, you got me thinking now. Not been driving for over a year now. yes clutch needs to be disengaged. .
Land Rover Toolbox Videos Hmmm. Thanks for answering. We have a Toyota Hilux at our firestation. Maybe i can also ask somebody there.
With the prop connected, how do you know if you are checking the play in the axle or transfer case?
Because the pprop is between the transfer box and axle so you can observe them seperately from under the vehicle.

Hi what does US mean ?
ad sav Ah yes. Military terminology that I learned from my father. U/S means unserviceable. N/W means not working.
+Land Rover Toolbox Videos I thought it mention utter shite
*Ment
Fucked is another way of putting it.
how much play should there be between front and rear drive flanges when the cdl is locked. should it be tested in or out of gear
Excelent
... loss of drive could be prop shaft missing, lightsaber damage...
i have noyse clunck i dont know how fix
after in lot traffic, it shows " transmission overheat" but if drive without traffic, car goes fine. do you have any advice, thanks.
+Danny Tao Maybe you need more oil?
+Max Mctavish bit random that enquiry. Only just noticed it after you answered him.
