    Hello, I would like to build a geodesic dome to use as a pergola in my garden. I live in an area where there is a lot of wind, the dome stays in place all year round. Will it be wind resistant enough up to 60 km per hour? Thank you

      We have never had a customer lose their dome to high winds IF the dome stays on the ground. If the dome comes off the ground, it becomes a big parachute and nothing can hold it down. We recommend that you use 2' long rebar stakes at every hub to hold the dome to the ground in a windy location. Thanks. John Hurt

    A very good site ... but I have a note that the diameter of the pipe used in the design was not specified ... If snow loads and wind speed are added, then a design can be obtained that specifies the diameter of the pipe used

    could you explain what the "5/8" represent in "3V-5/8 dome"? What's the 5/8 about?

      For a 3v dome, the true equator of the dome goes through the middle of a vertical section of struts. The dome has to be either 3/8 or 5/8 - it cannot be 4/8 for this reason. The first minute of this video will explain this in much better detail:

    when adding the hub centre ring width to the strut length do I divide the width by 2 and add to two opposite struts or just add the full width to all struts going into the hub? My understanding is that if imagine for a while there was no centre ring the struts should meet in the centre of the bigger ring and not overlap each other by the 1/2 width of a centre ring

      With our hub design, the true geodesic dome chord length will begin and terminate in the very center of the hub center ring. So to get the chord length, you would add 1/2 of a center ring width to each end of the strut, or to be practical, just add a the full width of the center ring to each strut length to get the actual chord length.     The imperial measurement system is so complicated that once the floor surface or the diameter is decided upon as a starting point, it would be smart to convert this number to the metric system and work in metric from then on, and make a slight adjustment to start with a more or less round metric number, i.e. since 12 feet equals 3.65 meters, start with 3.50 or 3.75 meters.

      Thanks. If you want to use the metric system, just click the "Metric" radio button on the dome calculators, and everything will be given in metric units. In the USA, we have to use Imperial measurements to use a tape measure to cut the struts. Thank you for your comment. John Hurt

      There are no metric tape measures in the USA?

      I have never seen a metric tape measure at the local hardware store, you may find it online. But all of the material that you purchase at the hardware store is in feet, like 4' x 8' sheets of plywood, or 10' pieces of pipe. So a metric tape measure would not be useful in the USA.       I agree that materials like pvc pipe and lumber are defined by their cross section in feet and inches However once he has decided which type of pipe or wood to use, there's nothing preventing a builder from measuring the strut lengths in centimeters-millimeters. It's much more precise and easy, and a well-known online retailer sells metric and even dual-system tape measures.
      Still your video is the first explanation of frequency that makes sense to me, and your calculator is a precious tool, a great time-saver so thanks a lot.

    What is the diameter of the tube
