    My Father was a pilot on the DC-9 for eight years at Northwest Airlines. He enjoyed flying it more than the newer equipment. It was a plane that truly tested a pilot's knowledge and flight ability.

    Super cool, love the great detail, very informative! I wish more videos would provide, in detail, how the cockpits work and take the time to describe it step by step like you've presented with us. It's my life's dream to one day be a pilot and to also have the knowledge of how the mechanics of the aircraft systems operate. I'd like to transfer away from the daily operation of 18 wheel vehicles across our interstate system. P.S. I'd personally love to get a chance to fly on one of these old planes! Thanks again for this great video! :-)

    I got to fly the DC-9 at the Delta Training Facility. Along with the MD80 and 738 and was able to start it CnD. amazing what FSX teaches you. I wish you the best of luck. Delta is my life goal as well. Best airline in the world.

    I have heard that the reason for that you basicly always start with engine no,2 has to to with layout of the aircraft. You can start engines on the right side of the aircraft while pax may board on the the left hand side. Pax in/out on the left hand side. Bag on/off on the right hand side. I have also seen that in prop days, the door was in the back. May that be so that people do not walk in to a spinning propeller? The ATR has this still today. The Fokker F-27, yes. The F-50 and Dash-8 in front.

    Even DC-8's are still flown in airline service in America. Not in passenger service, but still in service. Air Transport International based in Little Rock still has 10 of them in use.

  • @TheCharger895

    When the tower hands you over to departure, they say "jetBlue 1187, contact Minneapolis departure" that's on an IFR flight plan....if ur flying VFR with no planned route, when u takeoff and leave the tower airspace they will say "cessna 081, you are leaving my airspace, frequency change approved" great vid! I love airplanes like these cuz I honestly hate to see the old ones retire! I am not looking forward to the planes of the future....

    Its so cool seeing the cockpit at the airport nowadays. When grandpa went on trips to europe, he could sit in the cockpit during the flight and chat with the pilots and engineers. Definety cant do that anymore.

    The 50 series DC9, just like the 40, were a short production run. The 50 was the first with the nose stall stakes, which remain to this day. The 40 series I think was the best short version of the DC9, which is probably why it was brought back as the B717 with updated avionics and the IAE engines. Had MD made that change to the MD-80 line back then, things would be a lot different on that market.

    • @Snookynibbles
      @Snookynibbles 6 лет назад +3

      The 717 most closely resembles the Series 30 plane which was the most prolific of the DC9 series. Intriguing is how Douglas first released the Series 10, then lengthened the fuselage and increased wingspan to the Series 30. And then on the heels of that, Douglas mated the shorter Series 10 fuselage to the Series 30 wings & engines for a higher performance craft suited for high elevation runways such as Denver; they called that one the Series 20.

    The performance cards, now called TOLD (takeoff and landing) were always in the center covering the radar screen. Radar was usually off if weather and forecast were good. If it was needed, the PNF would remove the TOLD, but for landing and takeoff, the TOLD cards were always there so both crews would check and crosscheck the speeds against their speed bugs on their airspeed indicators.

    That's crazy, the 9's are leaving o-so fast. In August I have a voucher to burn, so on my return flight from a wedding, I'm going to try to do a route via ATL in and out of BHM, and so far it appears to yield 2 DC-9's. Those will surely be my last, unless I'm able to snag one in December again. Great vid by the way.

    DC-9, MD-80, MD-90 and 717 families all at once. this will take place this summer when delta is done repainting the 3 717's they just got from Airtran. In the end, delta will have all 88 of the AT 717's.

    What an incredible video, an insight into an aircraft which very sadly isn't as common as it used to be. I have a question: is the unit at 7:25 specifically an ACARS unit? Do you happen to know what model it is? I've only really seen it in pictures on NWA/Delta DC-9s, and initially thought it was an FMS, but doesn't seem so from close up.

  • @javacup912
    @javacup912 11 лет назад

    That yellow handle is to isolate the brake pressure, should you loose one system. In the position of the video is in both (normal) which is center. If one system was lost, then it would be turned by a pilot to the appropriate working side. I can't remember well, but some 50 series I helped prepare for Aeropostal, a Venezuelan airline in the 80's, had two electric hyd pumps, plus the PTU. So you would have to lose a lot to use the handle. Factory default was one elec pump + aux (PTU).

    Winter, or whenever Delta decides to get the 717's they will start to phase out. Also, each 717 that comes into Delta's fleet, two CRJ-200's will be retired. So, Delta is ordering 88 717's, So 2 times 88 is 176. 176 CRJ-200's will be retired when Delta has 88 717's in the fleet.

    Airplanes today: "Here are the computer screens, over here is the joystick (side stick), and the tray table opens up into a keyboard.
    To start the APU, press this button; it runs an auto-start sequence. The computer monitors the fuel and EGT and if they fall outside of safe parameters, it shuts down automatically."

      *is there a problem with this?*
      Its less interesting unless you're an engineering student. Nobody gets misty eyed about "press button, receive bacon for taxi".
      Its a better machine but a less romantic idol. Its ultimately the same reason why hand carpentry will never go out of style even after a robot learns to do it better. In 100 years I bet someone is still going to prefer flying a J3 Cub.

    • @BollocksUtwat
      @BollocksUtwat 7 лет назад +3

      Yea, that's a reasonable reply. Call me an asshole for repeating the standard view of the entire airline industry minus the minority of cranky out of touch blow hards.
      In reality autoland is only ever used for conditions in which a plane without it wouldn't be allowed to land or would highly likely be unable to doing it "completely visual". The vast vast majority of landings are still how they were in the old days, autopilot coupled to an ILS and manual after stabilized.
      Autopilots have been a standard part of commercial flying since at least the end of WW2 when military aircraft were being converted to civilian use and all their new fancy systems were becoming the norm. Autoland itself was developed in the 60s by Europeans because the conditions normally found there made doing things "completely visually" hazardous and stupid. RVR less than 500 feet is no time for heroes. This isn't recreational flying, its about people getting places and doing it safely. The era of hand flying without autopilot was the most dangerous time to fly. The time when the DC-9 came out was still dangerous, autopilots or not, because of safety standards. Since the Airbus A320 era things are as safe as they've ever been as a result of the changing ways things are done.
      Airbus hate is just a reflex and most criticisms made by people who call someone like me an asshole are excessive, whatever truth there is in it. In reality the DC-9 has lots of advanced autopilot features including an autothrottle intended exclusively for landings. The 1965 FCOM by Douglas indicates autopilot is usable from 500 feet agl. Its not much different to what they do today, that being today when the majority of landings are still manual, Airbus sidestick or not.

    • @tommyg2543
      @tommyg2543 7 лет назад

      BollocksUtwat yeah you brought up good points just I've been flying a while and back in the days of dc9s we sometimes landed completely visual. These days flying 767s, ILS, and all this panel stuff is just odd for one who has been flying for such a long time.

    How did you get this oppertunity. I'm young and would love to see the cockpit of a plane in depth like this. Was it before departure or after arrival? Who would I ask?

    Interesting. Always wondered why there was flap/slats separation. Can bring them separately. Didn't know why until now. I usually bring them down together. Interesting

      bill r Y Unless there's a flap or slat abnormal you'd always move the handle together.

    Thank you so much! Well, good news for you and all DC-9 lovers reading this comment, the DC-9-51's WERE currently going to retire in early 2013. NOW, Delta has decided to keep them until 2015! Three more years to enjoy this beautiful bird!

    Well, how I said before, I don't think so after the DC-9-51 has about 30 seats more than the 717-200.

    Always wondered, why is the cockpit turquoise/blue??

      It's easy on the eyes ...they don't get strained as much with this color

      There is also the running joke among MD pilots that it such an ugly shade of blue/green that it's an incentive not to crash....since that's not the last thing you want to see.

    Question; now that Delta is getting 717's, will there be a common type rating with the 88 and 90? Or will there have to be a special pilot group for the 717? THANKS
